i think the "lowest temperature achieved" was rather a maximum delta T the unit can achieve.
the problem with those units is that they will increase humidity by a bunch and in worst cases cause mold in the house if you cant properly ventilate the room (if you do all the heat comes back in again =/)

That is a complete waste of money. It is a miniature evaporative or swamp cooler. A swamp cooler needs to move a lot of air to work. I have a room size one and it is about ten times the size of that one and uses about three gallons of water a day. Any cooling you feel in that video feel is the fan it uses. A properly working swamp cooler lowers the air it draws in by about 20 degrees. They make out like it is revolutionary technology. Swamp coolers have been around as long as electricity has been around, that is over 100 years. They only work in dry climates like deserts or the western states. They don't work at all in humid environments like the Mid West or the East coast. It will work kind of in L.A. which is more humid than you think because it is close to the ocean, but not NY. They work great in Phoenix, until it gets too hot, they only lower the air they take in by 20 degrees, that means when it is 110 they are blowing 90 degree air. They are counting on that when everybody got central ac they stopped using swamp coolers and most people don't even know what a swamp cooler is. I asked a kid in Home Depot about a swamp cooler and he didn't know what one is, I got mine online. You tend to put them on the roof or in a window where they can take in dry air. They make the air a little humid, enough not to work, but not enough to cause mold. For example they take the humidity of a room in the desert from 30% humidity to 80% humidity. The air in the Mid West tends to run 100% humidity. For a swamp cooler to work it has to move a lot of air and has a big fan. A fan run off of a USB cord can't move enough air.

Try cross ventilating air, I tried one in my camper van with fresh air from under the dash passing the cooler through to the rear of the van were a computer fan draws air out from behind my fridge out thru the vent.
Woke up cool and fresh on a 33 degrees Celsius day.
Tried having cooler turned off on the next day for comparison and woke up sweating!

@@seewhaticando3885 Don't feel bad. I am older than you, not a lot older, but older. To me it means the things that things that kids read about in books, I watched on the 5:00 news. The weird thing is I am older than the people I used to think of as old. This looks like an evaporative cooler which uses a fan running through a wet membrane to cool the air from the evaporation of the water. I think it uses the principle of convection cooling, it is a good idea to Google convection cooling. Sweat uses the principle of convection cooling. I used to work outside in Phoenix in the summer and literally drank three gallons of water a day and would sweat it all off. I could wear the same shirt the next day because it evaporated as soon as I sweated it. The evaporation of the sweat is what keeps you cool. Guys in the South with big sweat stains on their shirts aren't getting cool from the sweat. That is why when you get out of the pool you are cold. The drying of the water from your body makes you cold. Evaporative cooling has been around longer than electricity. People used to hang wet sheets on the porch in the summer and then sleep out there. The drying of the sheets cooled the air. Evaporative cooling requires a lot of air, something that small might cool your head a couple of feet away. Evaporative cooling requires a dry climate. It won't work in humid states east of Colorado. If you want a better value look for evaporative coolers on Amazon. They need more air than the manufacturer says. I recommend one about 3x what the square footage says. If it says it will cool a small room, it will cool a large closet. The thing is they work best with fresh air, like an open window and they need somewhere for the air to go, like another open window. They had lots of evaporative coolers in Phoenix. The dry climate there is good for evaporative cooling. If you live east of Colorado a desktop fan will work better and be much cheaper. The mid-west and east coast is much too humid for that to work.

    • @markdalbey
      @markdalbey 4 роки тому

@@seewhaticando3885 One of the nice things about evaporative coolers is they have fans that keeps the air moving and air conditioners don't. Fans make it feel about 5 degrees cooler. I have air conditioning in my apt. I had to buy a fan for each room. Cooling is a big deal in Phoenix. You are always researching ways to reduce your electric bill, and it always was 450.00 in July.

Good review and test of the unit.
Unfortunately I bought a couple of these that were marketed under Cool Air. Everything with this unit is exactly the same as the two that I bought. The fits unit lasted about 2 months before the water intake got clogged and it didn't cool anything. Used it as a personal fan for a month or so.
The second unit lasted all but 2 days before it wouldn't turn on.
While it worked, it did a good job of cooling my space at the computer work area. Not sure wher ethis is made but, I'll wait to see if another product that is more reliable comes on the market.
Thank You for the review and test. Very good report.

A mini swamp cooler. How COOL! I have central air and keep it set to 68F. I live in the high desert in Oregon and the humidity is extremely low, I think today is supposed to be 14% so a swamp cooler is an attractive alternative to AC around here. The second unit last two days (2). It wouldn't turn on after that....Threw both of them away and chalked it up to "education is not cheap learning experience.

Imagine a PC cooling fan pulling air across a wet piece of expanded foam, then blowing it out into the room and you have this unit in your mind. It does have a small impact on the air leaving the box (the 7 to 8 degrees here is representative), but even in a small room (about 9' x 9') the overall cooling is minimal. It runs about 4 hours on a fill. If you can locate it say near the head of your bed with the air flow directed onto you, it can be of help in getting to sleep. Or if you can locate it near a fixed location (like a computer work location or reading chair), it can be of some benefit - but only in a relatively low-humidity location.

save your money. The Arctic Air units are so poorly built they won't last past a month or two. The connector on the unit alone will fail in a short period of time. You have to be within a foot or 2 at the most to feel anything as the fan is pretty weak. Spend your money more wisely, go to a Home Depot and pick up a larger unit with a larger fan and water tank if you want things to work

It is hot here also! I t was 86 degrees American in my bedroom yesterday . with the AC on and fan. I gotta get moved! I have thought about building one of these. But much larger. There is so much humidity here I don't know how well it would work! Along with a dehumidifier. Likely quite well. With power use. Ac may as well be used! The evap cooler could be used with less power when there isn't much humidity, when I'm moved it will be much cooler there. I'm in a mobile home. With no shade! A temporary home since my house burned. It's time to move!

If you live in a humid climate a swamp cooler won't work. When they do work they use a lot less electricity than a.c. essentially the same as a fan. They are essentially a fan and evaporation of water causes the air blowing through them to cool. When water evaporates it uses heat. It is not the water that cools the air, but the evaporation of water that cools the air. When you sweat it is not the sweat that cools you, it is the evaporation of the sweat that cools you. That is why they say it is a dry heat, in a humid heat sweat doesn't evaporate and you don't get cool.

77 is hot? we have hit over 90s few times this week. with humidity in the 50%-80% range, last thing i want is more moisture in the air. in the south, we just do fans. and would use a heater version of this for humidity in the winter.
in order for it to be a proper AC, it would need to do a heat exchange and remove hot air out of the room. thinking peltier device, fans, and ducting.

I suggest you monitor the room humidity. These coolers work using the latent heat of evaporation of water. If the weather is hot and humid, it will not make much difference to room temperature. I don't recommend running in a room with electronics as the high humidity will result in corrosion of metal parts, and worst case water on circuit boards if dew point is reached.
Prolonged use with poor ventilation may result in the growth of mould on absorbent materials, such as wall paper and unpainted wood and plasterboard.
Some types of mould may represent a serious health risk, there is a particularly nasty species called aspergillus niger.
Check out moldpedia, this has details of the dangerous moulds and links to evaporator air coolers.

learnelectronics these really only work in very dry heat. When it is already humid, the water will not evaporate very well and will quickly change back to liquid water releasing the heat energy it absorbed as it turned into vapour. I suspect there may also be a risk of growing legionella, the cause of Legionnaires Disease, if the filter and water container is not well maintained, though this is pure speculation on my part. It is possible the filter used to hold the water for evaporation has a antibacterial treatment, such as silver loading to stop such things growing on it.
But my comments about damp and mould I am confident are correct, as I have practical experience with a similar unit, this used a water dipped carbon foam filter with air blown through it.
You might like to run some tests and check how room humidity changes as it runs.
Like all these air quality improvement devices, there always seems to be a draw back if the price is low. Do you remember those negative ion generators that was a fad a few years ago? They did improve the air quality, providing they did not generate too much ozone, but at the expense of the room decor.. The big drawback was they negatively charged the dust in the air which promptly discharged on any grounded surface, such as the room walls, turning them a premature black colour. The clue was that the corners of the room would remain clean, showing the original colour as a narrow band. This is because of the electric field in oblique angle, (90 degree) corners is lower, making the charged dust less attracted to them. This is the reverse of the point discharge effect.
I did a quick bit of research and found that aspergillus fumigatus is even more dangerous than the black mould aspergillus niger.
Both are found growing in damp rooms, commonly in bath and shower rooms, both can result in fatal pulmonary disease.

Skyline4017 the filter may contain anti mould and bacteria chemicals. I cannot comment on it or how long the filter remains safe.
It must be assumed that the manufactures are fully aware of the potential problems and take the necessary steps to protect their customers.

I found the instructions that came with mine(Rovus Arctic Cooler) it looks identical as the one in the video...they say that they recommend cleaning the filter and the insides of the water container once a week...and to change the filter every 6 months, even sooner if you notice that device isn't working properly.
You got the point about humidity...it can be a problem and a health risk if not carefull
Sorry for my bad english i hope you can understand what i meant to say :)

We're also in the middle of a heatwave. Boy our climate really seems to be screwed up! I considered a similar unit but didn't fancy the increased humidity especially here in Scotland! I suppose that wee unit won't do much harm especially in drier parts of the world. Proper air conditioning units are just so expensive and we seldom need them over here, normally!

    • @billcameron7375
      @billcameron7375 5 років тому

@mad ass You get a minor benefit from the sensible heat of the additional heating of the cooler water (maybe 3% or 35 btu/lb water), but the latent heat of vaporization of the water (roughly 1000 btu/lb) is far more that that. The air mass far exceeds the water mass so the effect on the water evaporation rate is very small.

I hope you are not going to sit inside the cooler. Show the temperature of the area and not inside the cooler. ICE + Fan = cool air. That's common sense. What you should have reviewed is... How long does it maintain the same temperature which will at least help someone before buying this thing.
