    Please share your tips and tricks for keeping these large quilt projects organized. The bus box has taken so much stress off my shoulders keeping everything together and I can put it away until I can work on it again.

    You always make me smile. Yes, I am real 😂. And sometimes I even show up in your Facebook group. I group my projects in bins & boxes, too. Cause, well, I'm not a good finisher 👀

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  Рік тому +1

      Oh Joanne...the finishing is actually the hardest part! Staying on something until it's completely finished is pretty difficult, but it's so rewarding! I am terrible about managing my facebook page and group. I love them but I dislike facebook itself, and the newsfeed is a terrible, mostly negative distraction for me. I need to go on to check in on the group and avoid the rest of it, but it's incredibly difficult to go and then before I know it, I'm sucked into something I don't want to be in. I have other groups I enjoy, so I need to work on this issue! Wonderful to see you again, and I encourage you to pick out one project and finish it before the month is over!

    I looked at the pattern and to be truthful, I have no clue how I would do this. I am just a beginner in the quilting department. I used to sew when my kids were small but that was a long time ago…we live in Florida, very small house and a very small place in Canada where our families are. We both have dual citizenship so lucky to be able to enjoy both worlds. My husband retire this year…he is much younger than me. So getting all my stuff organized is very important. I am also a colorist in adult coloring books and I like to preserve food in my instant pot max and my Nesco canner. Money is tight so making my own canned veggies and sauces and jams saves us a lot…i love color so I have to watch myself when I get in a fabric store……I am so happy to have discovered your channel and the great people who have posted some very interesting tips. Thank you, I truly enjoyed this video and hope to see that beautiful quilt finished.

      Thank you so much Mickey! I think I'll have all the blocks constructed this weekend and then it's just a matter to sewing them together for the design. It's a little bit complicated, but a good intermediate level piece. I have a smaller quilt I did in a patchwork pattern using 5" squares in a charm pack. You might really like something like that. You can make all your units as 4 patches and sew the units together. It's a fun project and if you get everything as precuts it would be a matter of pairing everything. I think you'd enjoy that because you could jump right in mixing your fabrics. I used a print with a low volume tone on tone cream as a background. I still love that piece! Thank you so much for watching! I really like everything I put away this summer, but I'm also glad it's done. Food preservation and gardening is so much work. But I'm grateful to have what I have put away.

      You're welcome Diane!! I get totally overwhelmed looking a long list of measurements and fractions and instructions. It causes my brain to totally shut down. So I've learned to get an over view, start with an easier unit and build from there. Otherwise, I'm stuck. I also can't cut out every thing at once. That feels like a lot. So I take longer and work less efficiently, but I enjoy the process more and find I can be more creative in picking fabrics etc if I take things in smaller bites.

    Aren’t those the same bins their use in airports? TSA make you put your stuff in there. They are genius Patty very practical wish there was a apparatus that you could put them in to stack them.

      @PattymacMakes  Рік тому

      I guess a handy person could build a custom shelf system to stack the bins, but I don't do wood working myself, so I stack them on the floor. LOL Someone else mentioned them being used in the airport, but I haven't been in an airport since 2014, so don't remember what we did back then. But it makes sense it's the same kind of bin. They are basically indestructible.

    A tip to make an expensive rotating mat last longer is to get a small, less expensive (like the one at Dollar Tree) & put it on top. You can square up smaller things, still rotating easily, but not make as many cuts on the expensive mat. At least that’s what I’ve been doing. 😊

      I love that idea, but after using a wide back fabric, I think I'm going to wind up finding something at Joann or Hobby Lobby that will make a nice backing without costing so much money. I'm still going to need border and binding which is probably another 4 yards and gosh I gets so darn expensive! I would like the whole quilt top to be Ruby Star so I can do something less expensive for the backing.

      As fun as that sounds, I'm going to continue using them as is. The bus boxes can be repurposed and used for tons of other things around the house, so I would prefer to keep them decoration free. But thank you for the great idea!! I honestly don't know how you would apply a decoration to a smooth plastic and have it adhere properly long term. If I leave them as is, I can use them for multiple things and they will probably last me the remainder of my life in their original condition. Which is honestly what I would recommend. Leave them as is and use them, because they are a great addition to my sewing room!

    I somehow missed the live, poo! But I rewatched & I so enjoyed it!! I saw that pattern on the cover of magazine & loved it. So cool you are making it. I really want to too. I wish blocks were small enough for the 10" precuts. Such a darling idea for a quilt. When I made my husband's lap quilt when he had his 1st knee replacement, I used a large cotton drop cloth I bought at Lowe's. He wanted it warm & those are heavy. I wanted a neutral color like the tan it comes in. So it was a cheap & warm option. It was all in one piece too, just trimmed to fit his airplane quilt top. And it's really warm! I love your idea using that large tub. I save large shallow boxes I've received shipments in from FQS & MSQC. I store my 12" blocks in those so they lie flat. Isn't a pretty option, or air tight, but it keeps them dust free. I had planned to cover the boxes i use with fabric, but I can't see wasting the fabric, lol! When on sale I bought a collection of mint color baskets at Hobby Lobby to contain smaller projects. Use the smaller baskets to hold pins, shears, etc to put in my roller cart that I push over to my sewing machine. So shipping boxes are my answer, lol. Not ideal, but it works!

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  Рік тому +1

      So many great suggestions!! Thank you for sharing Bex! I used flannel for the backing on the patchwork quilt on my bed. I used the snuggle flannel and some stuff I had in stash for years and year. It's so warm and it's really heavy, which I like. I have not decided on backing yet, so I'm thinking it over. Right now I'm looking at what to use for border and binding. I don't want to use the Lipstick cowgirl for border because it's out of stock everywhere now and I want to have some left over for future projects. I still have that adorable panel print to make into a lap quilt or something. I'll check out the drop cloths next time I'm in Lowes. That's a great idea! The 108" wide back in Hobby Lobby was $6.99 a yard which is an incredible price. So I'm going to shop it around a little and see what strikes me. When I decided to get into quilting, I didn't realize what an expensive hobby it is. And what a huge undertaking it is to make them. But now I'm absolutely HOOKED!

Not really structured or me doing a tutorial just saying, "Hey I'll be over here sewing if you want to meet up." I can check the chat every 20 minutes or so or something like that. I think part of the finishing is personality type where some of us like project completion more than being in the uncomfortable middle stages, and part is due to space considerations and keeping all of it organized in a way that makes stopping and starting easy. There are many paths to the same goal of organization and finding what works for each of us individually is what’s important. I like to present the challenge and then share a way that works for me in the hopes it helps viewers find what best for them❤

    Been so busy with vacation so just getting a chance to watch this. Oh the I’ve got mail is just beautiful and your fabrics are so very pretty. I’m doing some sewing down here in Florida and thinking that bus box would be so helpful. I could pack things in it for the trip & then use it in the bedroom I use as a sewing space. I actually found a basket here at the place I’m staying. I put 3 Tupperware type containers in it. One I put sharps, measuring devices in another, last one marking things and a little bit of miscellaneous stuff. Next to it my sewing accessories box. All this is on the bed. Along with my fabric . Desk right beside bed and my ironing board. All kind of arranged in a open rectangle. Also the owner of the house bought a rolling chair so that makes it so convenient also. Been using my Verilux light for my sewing and I don’t have a good mirror so I use my phone to take pictures and my Verilux light shining at me really makes photos so much better. Working on pants, bias binding, and bowl cozies.

      Oh yes Victoria, you might really like the bus boxes. They are light weight and stack easily. They would be easy for you to pop on the back seat of the car driving back and forth. I do like your idea for keeping your tools straight. But for you, since you go back and forth so frequently, you might really like the convenience of just tossing your patterns and fabrics and so on into a couple of these bus boxes. Much, much easier than a suitcase or something. Each one holds a LOT, so you could probably get everything you need into the two of them and have all your tools in the tupperware containers. People love those bowl cozies! Do you have a pattern or tutorial to recommend?

I make batting 1/2” smaller so it sews easier. They are quite thick with fabric and 2 layers of batting. In order to be safe in microwave everything has to be 100% cotton. That is the fabric,batting, and thread. My family & friends love them & request them all the time.

    Hi Patty 😃 It’s so great when you post a video for us. I love that you’re so down to earth, so humble and so real. Thank you! There are so many negative and scary things going on in our world right now, and it’s refreshing to see your practical solutions….from sewing to prepping. I’ve been buying my batting by the bolt when JoAnn’s have 50% off sales. Some are fusible, some are not, but by the bolt, I should have enough to do a quilt with the same type of batting. I’m becoming concerned and shocked with prices of everything, so I stock up when it’s on sale. I put the bolts in the big black leaf bags, tie off the tops to keep the spiders out and store them in my garage. It keeps them clean and out of the way until I need them. I’ve also watched for the 108” material that is on sale in base solid colors that I use frequently for background and borders (like black, white, tan or off white). I buy several yards of it and the shipping is usually free that way, and I don’t have to buy it as often.
    I love love love that cute envelope pattern! I think a wall hanging of it would be an awesome gift for my sister for her home office…something she would really enjoy.

      Thank you for such kind and supportive feedback, Jodi! I really do appreciate it. I'm incredibly concerned, but I dial it down for videos and focus on simply encouraging people to plan ahead. Much like I do with my neighbors and with strangers I talk to while out shopping. I hope it plants a seed and others will also plan ahead for their own households. But mostly people shrug it off which breaks my heart a little. I still do what I can to be encouraging, though. I like your suggestions for putting away batting and backing fabrics. Great solid advice.
      The envelope is darling! Someone mentioned seeing something similar on the Missouri Star channel so I'm going to have a look and see if I can find it and make something to share on my channel. I agree it would be a darling wall hanging. Ok well off to put away what I picked up in the grocery store this afternoon. A lot of stuff was on sale though still shockingly expensive. But if I can get things we will use anyway on sale, I buy it and put it away. And I'm always replacing what I use in meals so my pantry and freezers stay full until it just gets too expensive to keep shopping and we have to live entirely on what I've put away. Which is probably sooner than later.

      Misty, thank you so much!! It seems like being open about the cost of this is rather unspoken and taboo. I'm not very good at keeping budgets and writing down every thing, but I know how crazily fast it adds up. Right now I'm trying to decide on border and binding fabrics, which is probably another $35 with shipping...maybe more. So I'm going to have to pick up the wide back on sale in the craft store. Otherwise it just gets out of hand. I'm guessing you're talking about the Alex drawers that are the wide, shallow drawers?? I've definitely considered those for storing larger blocks and also the wall hangings I like to make. I make so many things for blog posts and channel videos, and figuring out where and how to store the samples is a challenge. But it's good to hear from another maker using that system and having success with it, so thank you for sharing both your support and your method. It's appreciated!

I'm surprised something as simple as this has made me feel so good about a project. I generally do finish my projects as I go. I have to though, or I don't have finished content for my channel and blog, so that does propel be forward and through the more challenging (to me) aspects of a quilting project. I have a few odds and ends sitting here that I need to get finished, so I'm doing that for sure next week. And I should have the whole quilt top on this project done next week. The individual blocks anyway. I'd like to wrap this up and just handily into Christmas projects. You might give yourself a deadline and finish up what's sitting there. There are plenty of arguments both for and against, and so the answer would be a personal choice. Color catchers are your friend when you wash something for the first time, though. I hope that helps!

      Oh that’s not good. I’ll have to look that up. I know Amazon dissolved fabric(dot)com which doesn’t sound good to me either. I sadly think the next couple of years is going to be pretty rough on fabric sellers and designers and on those of us who sew that are trying to keep up with the cost of everything else. 😢

    I copy in color on my printer the pattern instructions so the pages are loose and I can mark the copied pages with notes, cross off completed parts or blocks made and no hassle or thrashing of the magazine or book from using it.

    Patti, you need to check with your cell phone carrier and also I am guessing you do not have an iPhone.
    I have the most affordable iPhone it’s an iPhone SE and I next to never knock on wood get any scam calls
    I am using Mint Mobile so I don’t know if that makes a difference however when I used republic wireless I would get some scam calls but they have a way of blocking those calls because they don’t quite reveal your primary number or the other way around I can’t remember.
    But again knock on wood I almost never get any and it’s just random they just dial random numbers however something has to be said for the type of operating system on your phone so call your carrier
    Or do a trial and switch to Mint Mobile they have a sign up program where you can get the first three months for $15 each plus tax of course you wouldn’t want to tell them that I referred you lol

      Thank you! I do have an older iPhone I'm using. I don't talk too much about styles and carriers in a public setting like youtube comments, though. I would really like a new phone, but I have so many security apps and things set up, the idea of switching all that over makes my head spin. I don't love my carrier, but they have storefronts so I can go in and speak to someone in person if I have an issue. The phone is an integral part of my business and my work online, so I'm hesitant to change much of it. It's not really used much for personal calls or activity and it's used for so many different aspects of my business. I really couldn't function without it. But I do appreciate your thoughtful suggestion!

      @@PattymacMakes And I meant to say that if you switched to Mint Mobile that you would say I referred you lol
      And it depends on where you live in the United States as to what type of coverage you would get with Mint Mobile. They use the same network as T-Mobile
      I’m sure if you went into that Apple store they would help you transfer everything over if you upgraded your phone
      So if you have an iPhone now then it must have to do with whatever carrier you’re using. But it’s worth a call to them anyway.

      @@dcwatashi The transferring all the security stuff over and setting all those authenticator apps back up would be so stressful. I would have to reset all the authenticators myself and honestly, it's over whelming to even think about. I would probably keep this phone for the security stuff and get the new one for the camera capabilities. I would really like an upgrade to my phone camera, but that's honestly the only reason I would consider a new phone. I don't use my phone like a normal person. LOL It's a security and content tool. If I wasn't doing what I do online, I would not need the service and phone I have. I could do a flip phone and call it a day. Which would be kind of a relief, to be honest. I think the calls are because I've had the number for such a long time and it's listed as a business number so it's more available than I would like. Most people doing what I do have two or three phones and different phone numbers, which I understand and it's definitely ideal, but the expense of multiple business lines is too much for me at this stage. But I totally understand where you're coming from! And I do appreciate your helpful advice. If I ever do get a mint line, I'll be sure to mention you!! I love the idea of the service, and if I used the phone just for some calls and texts, it would be ideal. I have certainly considered it!

      LOL Yeah they stopped calling me because I REALLY give them the business. Asking questions and expecting answers which these people don't like. I don't know if any of the scam calls are political people or not because when I do answer, it's always the auto warranty rip off or a business listing ripoff. Just all rip offs, so I don't answer. Welcome to 2022 where we don't answer our doors or phones anymore.
