    In this video, Peter continues his discussion of the signs and symptoms of dyslexia. Not every dyslexic students has the same dyslexia symptoms. One dyslexic student may display ten or fifteen common dyslexia symptoms, while another student may only display a few.
    Since there are so many common signs of dyslexia, it should not be assumed that an individual is not dyslexic, simply because they do not display one specific symptom of dyslexia.
    By learning the symptoms and signs of dyslexia, you can identify it when you see it.

      +Wimmie Yaka There's not a thing wrong with you being Dyslexic if in fact you are at this time. There are programs out there that can assist you. It may take you a little time to find one, but believe me, it is well worth the effort, being dyslexic is certainly not a joke. FR

    I'm watching this video 5 years later. I hope you still read and write back. After watching your videos and learning more about dyslexia from my studies I realise that I am dyslexic too(no official diagnosis but I check most of the symptoms). I'm a teacher and I'm currently studying inclusive education and learning German. I've always had difficulties reading and this sometimes affects my confidence.
    I always read the German word "damals" as "dasmal". Not the only but this one stands out for me 😂. Thanks for your videos.

    I got really good listening skills from passing through school from learning on the lesson. I got A/B+ in chemistry biology history... (physics was the only one I actually read). It also strengthened my intuition and improvisation. By 11th grade all my teachers thought I had read the homework while I had learned everything just from listening to them.

    I don't think I have dyslexia but I do have a few questions/ things that I'm curious about.
    1. Whenever I read I tend to re-read either the same sentence or paragraph multiple times to understand what's going on. (Sometimes I have to read out loud to understand)
    2. When I am writing I skip writing a word. (Ex: I would write something like "the other day I saw a cute and I wanted to pet him.)
    3. I also tend to jumble up my words when I speak/read out loud.
    4. I read over words and say a word that has like the same first and last letters as the one from the sentence
    5. When I read I feel like I'm working extra hard to focus

    I sometimes read words or letters that aren't there or leave some out, like the other day I read sake instead of shake. Or I swap number in my head, I was telling my friend I was so happy because I got 37% on my test, what I meant was 73%. Or the other day I was in a test and I could not for the life of me read the word cannectedness, I could half read connect but I just couldn't put the whole word together. I've always hated books, I'm fine reading to myself most times if I'm not in a stressful situation, but when I try to read out loud I just can't get my braid and body to work together. In class if we need to read a book I would read my part in my head before it was my turn just to try and be more familiar with it so I don't make mistakes.

    About the only thing I didn’t do was draw my letters backward....(though, in my estimation, I just mastered that quicker, since back then we wrote cursive, so It was easier to recognize when a letter doesn’t look right), that’s why no one knew I had dyslexia....because they thought that only the ones that.draw them backwards, were dyslexic. To this day....I still write ‘a’ in place of ‘I’. 3,6 and 9 might as well be the same number. If I have to read one of them out, I could say any one of them. If I’m not 100% concentrating when reading out numbers, at work...then 100% of the time I get corrected. I want to run and reading numbers is incredibly draining for me, even if It’s only .5% of each unit of work, that I do. When you were talking about the signs of dyslexia, I was so upset, because it brought me back to all my hardships of learning to read. I was labeled dumb, because I was guessing...same thing I replace words with it’s synonyms. And changed the endings of words. I probably would read a paragraph 20 times and still have no idea what it said. What surprised me was in my late 20’s, early 30’s I started reading out loud to my babies that turned toddlers that turned young children, there was no pressure to read, there were just story books, that I read out loud to them. No one was judging me. I started enjoying reading and even learned phonics for the first time in my life. Every word prior to that time was seemingly memorized by how it looked and not how it sounded. No wonder learning to read was so difficult, no wonder I couldn’t retain information, literally, every time I read, it was so taxing because I was trying to remember every word. I’m just about 50 now...I no longer worry so much about these errors and daily have to explain to first timers....I’m dyslectic. (In other words, I really telling them, don’t you dare think of me as dumb, because I’m not). Im beyond thinking of dyslexia as anything more than a gift. From someone painfully lacking in self-esteem due to my perceived disability, to now someone who is now so grateful for how I’m able to see/perceive things around me. Thanks for doing the work that you do. 😃

Sometimes I skip words when reading and mostly breez over sentences when reading. I don’t know if i’m dyslexic but I recently decided to look into it. I get really good grades and is a great student but language-arts has never been my strong suit.

    Can you do a video talking about how dyslexia effects our ability to grasp math....spelling is my enemy, I love to read, although it’s tiring because my constant rereading or skipping whole sentences, (reading is a long process but I enjoy the learning part so I persist) I have a fairly decent vocabulary.....takes me an unusual amount of time to write (which I love doing btw) but have NEVER been able to read an analog clock....still can’t.... gave up on learning times tables...still don’t know them.... over the years I have seen my reading and writing abilities improve but I still have to hold up my hands to tell left from right.....I’m enrolling in school this semester and have to face what I’ve been avoiding my whole life and that is NUMBERS.....they are evil and I’m more than curious as to what other dyslexics symptoms regarding numbers are.

    Hey there! Thank you for your video. I’ve recently stumbled upon your videos as I am trying to find answers about myself. For me, I’ve always hated reading. Words just take so much effort to process. I am constantly missing words, skipping lines, I have awful reading comprehension but my spelling and punctuation are great, mainly through effort on my side. Sometimes I add letters that aren’t there, other than that, I’ve always been a great student. Just awful any assignments that require a lot of reading. I am also suspected to have adhd by my doctor. What are your thoughts on this and is this something that I should pursue?

    Hi I am also wondering if I have dyslexia
    ( these are some signs that occur daily)
    1- forgetting familiar words
    2- saying the opposite word of the thing I am trying to say
    For example : I will say sat instead of stand or saw instead of saying heard
    3- I sometimes skip sentences when reading
    4- I keep getting the letter 'j' and 'g' mixed up when saying out loud
    5- I pronounce words differently from other people constantly
    6- I cannot follow left or right directions

      @DyslexiaConnect  7 років тому

      Thanks for your question. One of the best ways to improve reading accuracy is to work with a reading tutor, and have them stop you to go back if you miss words, add words, guess at words, etc. Additionally, a properly trained tutor will be able to work on other exercises and materials to help get you out of the habit of guessing at words, and teach you to read phonetically. These are all things that we help our students with, if you are interested in online tutoring. www.dyslexiaconnect.com/pricing-2/ . Thanks.

    I honestly dont know if I have dyslexia. I know I read slowly and have trouble understand large clumps of words. I dont have issues with spelling that I know of but I hate reading, its tiring, I skip around alot. I look for kinda like bullet points so I get the as much information as possible so I dont have to read. I guess at the next word a lot, kinda using context to help guide me. I typically will read the same small paragraph serveral times before continuing or understanding what it means. And when im forced to read out loud. I have to reread stuff like once or twice and I seem to be incapable of reading smoothly like i read in blocks.

    I think i have a mild dyslexia my whole liife. It was worse as a kid and i think i learned copping skills but it still affects me. I read very slow when i was young and nothing really made sense. I do get very tired reading so i tend to stop reading a book I'm interested in . one thing i really struggle with is my mind wandering off while reading. I feel like I've always just gotten enough comprehension to get through. I think there are other things too but i never thought about it enough. The mind wandering and getting exhausted reading is really big for me. Not sure of all the mechanism. I did have other signs as a kid. Hand and eye work comes easy to me and i can get super focused with it. Do you find my experience common at all?

    Does dyslexia effect speech? For the longest time my friend well read out or simply say "dia-lex-ic" instead of the proper way and when saying certain words, they *ahem will have the idea of it down but will not be the proper way of saying it? ex: fathom will be Fay-thom" and when reading out loud instead of sweat it will be sweet. by they I mean me lol. I know the word but will say it slightly different anyways sometimes I won't even notice unless someone corrects me. it bothers the heck out of me. Is this even count as dyslexia or something else?
    Another problem i tend to have is when writing I will tend to leave a word or two out by accident or add in the same word twice and will completely miss the mistake even after proofreading :/

    • @DyslexiaConnect
      @DyslexiaConnect  8 років тому

      Thanks for your question. Dyslexia can be related to speech issues sometimes. The issues you mention could also be related to auditory processing disorder, or simply not knowing how to pronounce a word that has been read. The writing issues you mention are common for dyslexia.

    Hello, thanks for the explanation. I'm Italian so I apologize in advance if I make any mistakes. Right now i can't see a doctor so i was wondering if you could help me understand myself better.
    I have always had problems speaking, I am not comfortable with it, I have in mind what I want to say but it's difficult to formulate a phrase. I sometimes add words while I'm speaking or I invert what I want to say next with the word before. I don't know if this makes sense. Sometimes, when I write, I reverse letters or my hand frozes even though I know what I want to write, it's frustrating. About reading, I don't have much difficulty with it. Many times I have no problems and everything seems normal, other times I skip words or add them but it's not so common, I think. Am I dyslexic?

    I skim read when I silently read. I don't mean to its like my eyes take control and move at their own speed. Sometimes my mind is catching images of what I just skimmed over but if you asked me what EXACTLY I read I couldn't tell you line for line. Maybe I am just lazy. I even tried researching ways to read faster cuz I thought maybe if I learned how to read faster my mind will catch up to my eyes, if that makes any sense. I have to read out loud sometimes to finish a sentence or paragraph. And it is exhausting. Sometimes I have to use my finger to slow my eyes down enough to read syllables. Idk y I do that.

    I got tested for it when I was in the 4th grade. I was told that I was border line. know I am in the 8th grade, i mix up the letter m,n or p,b,d and 6, 9 I don't know if I am or not. I don't like reading, and I never have, when I read it is at night so I get tired and go to sleep.
    should I get tested again?

    Why is there no education for people with severe dyslexia at college we get put in the English entry level for the second language-mainstream which is not good. Three years at college in the library and the pop-in center I.T.C. I did 7 hours a day I was illiterate but now I can read but struggling for some software to help me there was one suitable for me it was spellquiz but have problems subscribing

      Hi, Ian. Thanks for your comment. Regarding accommodations for dyslexia at college, it depends on the college. Some provide accommodations and resources for students with dyslexia, while others do not. Are you looking for software to help with spelling? Or with writing composition?

      @@DyslexiaConnect Hi thanks for your reply my first one feels strange writing to someone I don't know, so I learnt to read at the college pop-in center i.T.C through a U.B.S stick. When it comes to my laptop I have security code things going off and I don't want to pay for some thing I cant use or suitable I would be grateful if you could point me in the right direction. So I'm looking for help with my laptop and finding the right software for spelling, so I can fry my brain and become a good speller and write like this from the top of my head. Software is a way forward for people with learning difficulties but thay can't get it. I live in Doncaster and I'm willing to travel to get set up, I've come too far to stop. The first shut down I went to Birmingham paid £300 pound for a diagnostic Assessment Report the best thing I could of done for my head.

    Im awful at spelling, when im speaking ill jumble my words and make absolutely no sense and ive failed math like Fs since 2nd grade(im going to be a senior in HS now) i strugle in school, i always have straight Cs pretty much no matter how hard i try. Its very hard for me to focus too.i even spelled my own name wrong, then realized i did, went to erase it then spelled it wrong the same way, this happened multiple times. And ill sometimes write “ang” instead of “and” (same with a bunch of other words) and i wont notice until a friend reads my paper and starts laughing at me

Whenever i tried to get help i was deemed "too intelligent" to be dyslexic, but i dont feel like they have done a good job with helping me. It hurts my head to read for periods of over 10 minutes, and i get very mentally and physically tired after reading for more than ten minutes. I have had reading and spelling problems all my life in school I really didn’t learn how to read in till I was 9 I’ve always hated reading in school they were always trying to hurry me along and that made me guess and assume the words instead of talking the time to sound it out I also tend to add words that aren’t there and I’ve had difficulty telling my left from my right all my life I have a birthmark on my left ear if it wasn’t for that I don’t think I’d know the difference I always seem to mix up similar words and letters like b and d 9 and p Tuesday and Thursday most recently I’ve got a job as a cashier and whenever I’m reading the total back it is almost always backwards like if it’s 39.89 I’ll say either 93.98 or 89.39 which can be very frustrating I was wondering if these were typical signs in people with dyslexia and how I might go about getting evaluated thanks for reading

    Do dyslexics recognize when they've misspelled something or read something wrong?

    • @DyslexiaConnect
      @DyslexiaConnect  8 років тому +1

      +Morgan BeVard Morgan, that is a great question. Sometimes, an individual with dyslexia will recognize that they have misspelled a word, but they may be unsure of how to correct it, unless they have received proper training. However, I have also worked with students who rarely ever recognize a spelling mistake themselves, until they have received a decent amount of dyslexia tutoring. At that point, that are usually able to start recognizing mistakes and correcting them. In reading, it's very typical for a dyslexic individual to not recognize that they have made a mistake. With proper training, they eventually are able to start to catch these mistakes. When a student with dyslexia starts to recognize their own mistakes, this marks a big leap in their progress.

      +DyslexiaConnect Thank you so much for answering my question! I hope you don't mind that I have 2 more, do Dyslexics see movement of letters on the page? (Words floating/falling off the page?) And when they see letters back words or upside down are they always the same letter/s? Thanks!

    • @DyslexiaConnect
      @DyslexiaConnect  8 років тому +1

      +Morgan BeVard No problem at all, Morgan. I'm happy to help! So, ask away. To answer your first question, some dyslexic students do describe these sorts of issues when reading. In many cases, it seems to be the result of decoding and encoding difficulties with letters and letter combinations (recognizing the symbols, converting them into sounds, etc.) Dyslexic students may use those descriptions to try and describe the difficulty they are having with reading. These issues are addressed in dyslexia tutoring and treatment programs. In rare cases, a student may actually have visual tracking issues. I have seen a couple of students who had both dyslexia and visual tracking issues. So, they needed dyslexia tutoring for their dyslexia, but also visual tracking therapy. Typically, a good dyslexia professional will be able to tell you if the difficulties a child is having are simply due to their dyslexia, or if they may have tracking issues as well, and need to see an optometrist about that. It is important to keep in mind that while tracking issues may be present in a student, dyslexia itself is neurological in origin, and cannot be addressed by vision therapy.

    • @DyslexiaConnect
      @DyslexiaConnect  8 років тому

      +DyslexiaConnect To answer your other question, in my experience, dyslexic students do not always reverse the same letters. They may read or spell a letter properly the first time, but then mix it up the next time. However, with very severe dyslexia, the mixing up may be very consistent. I have seen this on occasion. Dyslexic students often mix up b, d, p and q. As far as reversing entire words or seeing words upside down, this is fairly rare. You might find our video on symptoms of dyslexia useful. Hope that helps!

    • @FirstReviewer
      @FirstReviewer 8 років тому +2

      +Morgan BeVard -- Morgan, at times a dyslexic may realize their mistake, but maybe not, is all I can say. Due to the different levels of Dyslexia your question is very hard to answer. I have been dyslexic all my life, but didn't realize it until late in life.
      Although for the last year I have been going through Dyslexia Repair School, if you will, and it certainly has helped.
      I have just found this site, Dyslexia Connect, and it seems to me to be hitting the nail squarely on its head.
      What I can tell you from firsthand experience, and also talking to others with dyslexia is that "Spelling Bees" in our schools seem to do more harm than good, especially to a very young Dyslexic.
      Being Dyslexic I certainly understand that no one wants to be shamed in public, again especially in front of their classmates, but that's exactly what happened, not only to me, but countless others that are dyslexic, when standing up front in their class and not knowing how to spell a seemingly very easy word.
      While I'm on this role, and forgive me for being so wordy, but I never gave our language any respect when I was growing up, as I did mathematics.
      A very good place to start training a dyslexic is in some sort of Phonemic and Phonological Awareness School.
      By the way, although I am now retired I have always been somewhat successful, even though I didn't know the entire alphabet from A-Z. (Yes, Now I Do! Thank Goodness! Yes I still have more training to go through, much more.)
      I wish you the Best!
