1:24:48 - to be honest, this isn't "what happens when a studio is starting to be built around one guy" this is simply what happens in any creative endeavor that involves hundreds of people. Neil is the director of this game. Trust me, on a movie set, directors get bombarded with questions every minute and they need to approve every single thing. You need to have ONE vision. You can't have the vision of everyone, otherwise whatever you are making will either never see the light of day or will end up like a mess with no identity. You need someone with a super cohesive vision that can articulate it clearly to a team. We're not talking about management stuff, of course. And obviously, we're also talking about Naughty Dog, a studio with unparalleled level of artistry. So it's really not surprising to me that they stick to Neil's vision as much as possible (even though I'm not personally a fan of said vision). Like you said, this really isn't something you can pass off to somebody else.
Unparalleled level of artistry is such a stretch. No offense. Red Dead Redemption 2 came out 2 years prior and other than the gore system, which is still better than any other game even now, was far superior to TLOU2. That's not just my opinion but most people. Not to mention, TLOU2 had an entire year more of production time than RDR2. The rest, I agree with you completely.
@@brandonpowell3254 What about the character animation for movement, sound design, graphics? Also, comparing Naughty Dog with Rockstar is a bit unfair, considering that Rockstar makes millions by selling GTA 5 and has a bigger team than Naughty Dog.
Yeah, one of the things that drove me crazy and still does at times is how people act as if the devs are bad people for making a game they didn't like.
@jeffsroyalbodyguard7642don’t even respond half these weirdos online haven’t even played the game. I was disappointed when it released but by the end of my Playthrough I was craving more and I’ve replayed the game 6 times I think and once on the remastered version
the pregnancy discussion I completely disagree with. Ellie killing Mel is meant to make Ellie feel sick nad disgusted with herself, as Dina is pregnant. But the real point of Dina being pregnant is The Farm. JJ makes Ellie part of that family unit, her and Dina are moms now. Were not meant o sympathise with Ellie and her decision to go after Abby, we are meant to be ashamed of Ellie. Dina says that she wont do this again, it would be over for them if Ellie left. We are meant to be upset with Ellie for leaving. Jessies death may not hit the payer that significantly, but his presence is still felt at The Farm. JJ is his son, his appearance is asian. Yes, it is more layers of awfulness, but how does awfulness not add to the story? yes it just gets worse and worse but its meant to be like that. We are meant to feel worse and worse.
The pregnancy narrative is a master stroke to bring in realism; it asks what is life like in a society like the last of us that is broken down; because pregnancy is going to be a fact of life and its going to affect woman more severely, and will men abandon and cuase drama in a zombie apocalypse? Yes. Will children be a different asset and different danger in a zombie apocalypse? Yes.
The only things I'd change are graphical and more AI behavior which I hope will be added later in the Remastered version through patches. I loved the more moody voxel fog and more aggressive barrel fire from the E3 trailer. Also the E3 gameplay trailer seemed to have better subsurface scattering on the skin of generic NPCs.
@@MildMisanthropeMaybeMassive yeah that gameplay trailer was certainly more polished. Might not have been feasible with time restraints to give that level of effort to the entire game. Im not a developer though.
@grn7522 I think it probably had more to do with performance and stability, but I'm not a game dev either. That version will probably run fine on the PS5 and new PCs.
@@MildMisanthropeMaybeMassive ah good point. Either way, I wouldnt be surprised if we got a “definitive trilogy” sometime after Part III, with all three games having the same Remake treatment on PS6 haha.
I’m so glad the documentary called out the disgusting filth that threatened the lives of voice actors/actresses and their families. It’s truly sickening to think about. My thoughts have always been with Laura
It’s just a sympathy cop out to excuse any criticism. Like oh wow people on the internet said death threats and hate… yeah they morons and do that for everything every other day lol
@@haloman34567 This documentary doesn't even touch on the criticism *at all* though, which is nuts -- Neil jumps straight to "the reviews were glowing," ignoring everything from Skill Up's infamous thrashing to the negative Vice review Naughty Dog tried to have pulled (to say nothing of the frothing fanbase split). According the documentary, it wasn't divisive at all -- Covid & the leak got folks needlessly riled up, but everyone recognized the genius of the game in the end, ta-da. Which is some absurdly revisionist history.
Actually disagree with ya luke. To me, it throws ellies plans to gung ho go for revenge. She kniws dina wont leave without her...jesse even says so. Ellie even replies to tommy after she said "but she gets to live"..."it has to be". Ellie has to go back to jackson with the crew cuz dina cant push on. So no, i think the pregnancy adds a ton. Just my opinion.
True, was thinking the same thing. And with the dynamics of the characters, Ellie trying to fill a “mother” figure while never having her own. Loving JJ but realizing she “can’t” stay and fill a role she doesn’t understand.
Yeah, I just wanted to write the same thing. It just makes player realize how egoistic the Ellie's decision to go on revenge was, and how evil she became. It also adds to the realism of the world - people can get pregnant and children can get mixed up into all of this.
Curious there was no mention of the broken sound effects though. On ps4 pro If you smash all the windows on nearby cars in a fire fight there are then no gunshot sounds from enemies lol it was really weird. Obviously a limitation of the hardware but it was never addressed at least on PS4 and pro. The other issue was the glass pop in on vehicles. Especially if you turned around and walked back the way you came. The vehicles rendered ok but there was no glass until you were much closer lol. Not sure if that has been corrected with the remaster or not.
I think the funniest part about this doc is everytime uncharted was brought up it was spoken about like the bastard stepson no one wanted to deal with lol
@@richardcarson3596 never said the game wasn’t successful. Just thought it was funny how everyone at the studio, especially Neil, only saw that game as an obstacle to them working on the TLOU rather than the culmination of a legendary series. It’s clear TLOU is their baby. Which I think we knew, just funny for them to show it so clearly.
I didn't really get that impression. The thing about uncharted was it's more of a technical kind of game rather than an emotional one. So when they run into issues it's more of a programming or design issue but the last of us being an emotional game they'll have stronger "feelings" towards it. It's because the games are so different that they compartmentalize them differently. Plus at this point Naughty Dog knows how to make an uncharted game and everyone is just going through the motions then. The Last of Us 2 was a really big endeavor because they knew going in people may not LIKE the game. They had Uncharted in the bag, there was no doubt. So really I got the impression that they were fully confident in it, just a matter of getting it out the door.
That's an interesting (and humorous!) take on it lol As someone who works in the gaming industry, and just basing this off of my experience, my read on it was that it's incredibly difficult to work on multiple projects at once, each with their own production schedule and budgets and milestone goals, and release schedule, and balancing those things is incredibly stressful! They needed to make sure Uncharted hit its deadlines and got to release, but they also had to make sure that TLOU2 was getting adequate attention, also based off of their own projected schedule for release for that title. I worked on E3 demos before, and, man, those things are a pain. You have to take resources from the main project to work on a vertical slice of the game to show off at a convention where it will be seen (or played), for 3 days, and it eats up MONTHS of development time. Time that could be better spent on working on the game proper. As much as I enjoyed going to E3, bumping into old coworkers and meeting industry folk, checking out all the cool games on the show floor, from the developer perspective, I don't miss it at all. Anyway, the point of my ramble is that I didn't see it as Naughty Dog not wanting to deal with Uncharted, as its clear they love the franchise, having given us 5 ND developed game (and the really cool Bend game Golden Abyss), just that, when you're trying to juggle so many things at once, it can be extremely frustrating and stressful. Uncharted required all hands on deck, meaning anything to do with TLOU2 would either have to be pushed back, or the team would have to crunch like mad to hit their original deadlines. Neither choice is what they would have liked, but that's the nature of game development. It's always in flux, and unforeseen roadblocks can really throw a monkey wrench into even the best laid development plans and schedules. But yeah, it is really funny that each time UC was mentioned in this doc, it was because it was causing the TLOU2 team a major headache lol

And they said it was the least a story had changed in production too compared to all their other releases. This is normal for videogames as there's a constant juggling act between gameplay and narrative and it's not until further into production you can see what does and doesn't work. I'm hyped for the idea of a future Naughty Dog title that assumes Bloodborne level design and melee combat, I can only assume their next game might we'll be that considering their love affair with fantasy.

Niel was absolutely right about "We need more empathy". Everything today is about "revenge is sweet" and other biblical nonsense that never resolves anything.
not even about revenge just generally in life, I don't know what changed but there's this constant cloud of hate over everything and everyone that is driving me insane. The world would be a better place if we all had more empathy.
@@ManlyPelican Yes, exactly this.. everyone is TAUGHT to hate, taught to be revengeful. Where do they get it? The Bible - "revenge is sweet". People need to understand that circumstances of someone's life - his/her environment, culture, subculture, family, upbringing, diet, all kinds of influences - determine someone's behavior. People are not self-operating entities. They obey natural laws the same way trees and animals do. I know it may sound ridiculous to some people, or to those who don't know much about behavioral sciences, but people obey the same laws as dogs do when it comes to conditioning. It's just more complex in our case. I don't feel threathened by this.. it makes me more humble knowing that I'm not on a pedestal, as many people consider humang beings to be. It always starts with the upbrining. I remember one example from Jacque Fresco, who once said to me "If you were brougt up by the headhunters of the Amazon, you'd be a headhunter. And if I asked you 'doesn't it bother you to have 5 shrunken heads?!... you might say 'yes, my brother has 20!'" That's why I don't believe there are good or bad people (especially in this economy). There are simply people - and whatever they pick up during their formative years, that's what they become. This is why I love what Niels said about empathy. It's sorely lacking in our society. Empathy (to me) means looking at someone through his/her life experiences - "walk in someone else's shoes"
@1:18:38 i've seen a lot of people bring this up but i never really understood why they think ellie is being "forced" to watch. it's not like that was the intention. she showed up out of nowhere. of course abby isn't gonna care because she had been preparing for this moment ever since her dad was killed. they were just preventing ellie from intervening so that abby could wrap it up. do people really think they're going drop everything and escort ellie out of the room out of sympathy and a sudden change of heart? especially abby? selfish people are going to do selfish things, and that doesn't exclude joel or ellie.
Have to disagree on the whole pregnancy discussion, or at least in context for how it didn’t add much to the story it absolutely did. It helped further show how far Ellie went into her obsession and revenge that she ended up not caring about Dina, the woman she loves and JJ basically her child. Violence and her obsessing over the need to get revenge has a cost and knowing Ellie might lose her love and her child she still ended up going after Abby. And when she got back from Santa Barbara, they were gone. she lost everything, that was the cost.
1:33:46 I mean that's just not what he said..., his sentence made sense: "I'm confident in the demo if we finish it", meaning that if they complete the editing, and its to their liking they are confident the audience will like it as well, which is completely different to what you said:" I'm confident in the thing we're doing as long as it doesn't suck"...
Regarding whether or not a sequel was warranted, I think the idea a lot of players had of “Ellie and Joel live happily ever after in Jackson as father and daughter” just couldn’t happen. The ending of the first game does not neatly wrap things up with a nice bow, if anything it foreshadows a major conflict between them in the future. In some ways, the ending is less of an ending to the first game and more of an intro to the second game. There was just no world where that was the end of their story. I know in hindsight, people WISH that was the end, because they prefer the idea of an uncertain future to what ended up actually happening, but I think from ND’s point of view, it totally made sense to say “let’s explore what happens next”.
@@richardcarson3596 you responded to a comment about a sequel being justified to give your opinion on the quality of the game lmao. work on your reading comprehension and social skills and you could avoid looking like a weirdo debate-lord entirely
When dina told ellie she was pregnant ellie started being more resentful towards her and made decisions and had a certain attitude because of that, play dina became unable to physically help ellie for the rest of the seattle part and her being stuck in the theater instead of out with ellie allowed certain things to happen where otherwise it wouldnt. also it plays big into the epilogue
He sounds like those people who said that the story of Bill and Frank in episode 3 of the TV series added nothing to the story and was just a stunt. In fact without the story of Bill and Frank Joel has nowhere to take Ellie after Tess's death and then no reason to go on without the letter from Bill that makes him realize his purpose and determine to go on. Plus he gets the truck and supplies. Both the death of Bill and Frank and the pregnancy of Dina are in fact the impetus of how the rest of the story plays out the way it does. Neither is done for "shock value" or any of the trivial, lazy things he attributes to them. Which is why he doesn't write successful games or TV shows.
@waketp420 I got it and I still hate it. Revenge stories existed long before Part 2 did it. It is not unique or revolutionary as you and Druckmann think it is.

I think the “it doesn’t need a sequel” position is incredibly entitled. I prefer creators to have the freedom to tell the stories they want. It’s not their job to make something we like. Let them tell their stories.
@@Natty_Fattyno duh. He also stated in the documentary that he had the idea for part two almost immediately upon completion of part one. That suggests that he was inspired to continue the story before the first part was even determined to be a success. Moot point.
@@TheSCIOnce imo it didn't need to be continued. The story left the audience thinking about Joel's choice. If they agree or disagree, it was up to them. The second game feels like it makes the choice for the audience. The thing that made the end of tlou1 so good was that there was no definitive answer. If Joel was the hero or villain was up to your interpretation. In tlou2 it feels like the creators decided for you that Joel was the villain. Also in the last scene when Joel lies to Ellie, I feel like lots of people, me included thought Ellie sort of knew Joel was lying but she didn't say anything because she wanted to believe it. Her reaction made her seem like she didn't believe it but she went along with it anyway. But her reaction in 2 would make you believe she believed Joel 100%. Sorry for the wall of text, I think tlou2 is incredibly impressive in acting, music, graphics, game play and the ai is unmatched I just think the story feels more like a cash grab then the creators having a story they really wanted to get out. Especially since 70% of naughty dog's staff left.
@@Natty_Fatty I don’t believe that part two in any way paints Joel as a villain anymore than his actions in part one. It’s explicitly stated in part one that he was a villainous person and a hunter who killed innocent people. Part two also recontextualizes his choice at the end of the first game as something not done out of a selfish desire to kidnap the girl for himself but instead shows us and Ellie that his reason was solely for her to have a life of her own without the weight of saving humanity on her shoulders. Part two also doesn’t do anything to suggest that Ellie believed his lie. It denies down on her doubts as illustrated by the various flashbacks showing that she couldn’t move on accepting his account of what happened at the hospital. I think you’re objectively wrong on both fronts. Every piece of commercial product is technically a cash grab as that is the primary purpose of having a product. The story of part two is not some soulless attempt at a payday as evidenced by a ton of things you’re either choosing to ignore or simply aren’t understanding. As the game is largely about perspectives perhaps you can consider an alternative one.
@@TheSCIOnce Yeah, I guess it's all a matter of interpretation and how you feel about the story. I just couldn't connect with tlou2 nearly as much as 1 so I'm probably just more critical of it. Even though I believe someone challenging what a story can be is a good thing, I think Druckman made the wrong call to bring her on, I feel like she was writing things in a lot of the time to satisfy her own wants (ie. when she says “yeahh lets fckin do it~” in that kind of tone), Druckman is an incredible writer and can make good stories, he didn’t need her.

I’ll spare you my theories for Part 3. But I think part of the disconnect for most fans is that Part 2 leaves a large incomplete feeling at its end, where part 1 felt like it could end there. I don’t think they thought, “let’s do a part 2” I believe they thought, “this can be a trilogy.” I think there was an outline for Part 3 before part 2 was finished. Since that interview with Neil was filmed in mid-2023, and since they scrapped the multiplayer game, that tells me they've begun development on TLOU3 by now (even if it's just early design and mechanics). My guess is late 2026.
Yeah I think we are more into a 2028 release. They haven't announced their other IP yet and they haven't started filming season 2 of TLOU which Niel is also involved in. So i think Part 3 will be a early PS6 title when we get them in 2028/29.
Late 2026 announcement? Makes sense. If it was an early concept, it means pre-prod has barely even started. It’s a 2028 game at least easily. Their next game most likely with a 2026 release date is a new IP/project.
Development would of started years ago. TLOU2 development started way back straight after the first game in terms of story.. My guess is that they're going to use the same engine and current look of the remaster, the engine will be updated but everything will be hush hush until they're ready to say anything. They've been working on something for the past 4 years, people forget that its just like any other job, they went back to work after they released their last game.
@@traviscue2099Yes, development for the new IP started long ago. Same look of the remaster? I highly doubt it. Naughty Dog are notoriously known to push the limits and set new standards. The Remaster is barely an improvement to the base PS4 version of the original game, it was also done by a small team of new employees adapting to the engine. The next game most likely has the whole studio behind it, in an updated engine and as I said, they like to set standards. It'll be an improvement.

No anything NEEDS a sequel but given how the first game ended how do you not follow that up, to me part 2 just made the first even better, both games compliment each other perfectly.
This game is meant to be exhausting because that is exactly what Ellie feels through the whole game. Ellie is more tortured and broken as the game come to end, just like player was exhausted by the length of game. The cycle of revenge and violence is exhausting and endless.
That’s exactly how the game left me - exhausted. By the time I got to Santa Barbara I was basically pleading with Ellie to stop and go home. I was so tired. Not in a bad way like I didn’t want to play, but that I had become so uninvested in getting revenge on Abby.
I disagree fully with most of your takes. Remember "you can't please everyone so you've got to please yourself." And that is exactly what Neil did, he told the story he wanted and if there was something he wishes to change he now has a TV show to change. I really hope he doesn't do any fan service to me or you or anyone else.
Disagree so much with Luke’s stance on the pregnancy killing lol. Makes it very hard to believe that he fully understood the themes of the game. The story is literally about the unforgiving/unrewarding nature of violence and revenge. Seeing Ellie kill Mel makes you want to despise Ellie - just like Ellie feels about herself (but is too focused on revenge obvs). Cycle of violence. Joel woulda killed anyone to save Ellie - Ellie killing a pregnant woman even tho Dina is preggo n carrying on blindly makes her the exact same as Joel. Also, it is obviously a story beat that plays in to your understanding of Abby’s hatred towards towards Ellie too - which is a great thing for the structure of this story. The reveal of Ellie holding JJ on the tractor is beautiful and also heartbreaking. He is very obviously a son of Jessie. Jessie’s role, even though maybe short lived in the game, is a huge one to the overall story. Anyone that doesn’t understand / like LOU2’s story is genuinely too focused on seeing ‘protagonist win no matter what’ & can’t realise that games as a medium can tell a mature / deep / uncomfortable stories to anything other than - heroes must win!!! It’s a depressing as fuck story but my god it IS a story. And a well written, well acted and memorable one too. & the gameplay / AI is literally still ahead of its time lol

I didn't necessarily agree with the narrative approach and the pacing to me was quite terrible , but there was no doubt that the love and care Naughty Dog did in this game is nothing but incredible. It's a shame what happened to the team due to the backlash at the beginning, they definitely didn't deserve that either. Though I didn't like how the story went, I do appreciate the boldness and love they put into the game and i hope they learn from this for their future games.
I've wanted to comment on your original commentary of Part 2 & never did because of the time gap. I played Part 2 completely blind aside from generally assuming Joel was going to die. Part 2 threw me for a mind F$ to say the least. I felt a very prominent sense of unease the entire game. I thoroughly enjoy your views on games regardless of my differences of opinion on many things. I do feel that some of the game felt like a drag at some points, however I loved Part 2 in its own right.
I love the game, and even if I didn’t of rather have a sequel that takes risks than a boring one. I always respect when developers/writers/creatives had an easy path. Which a last of us sequel had, it could’ve been so easy or simple.

I firmly believe that in order to appreciate TLOU Part 2, because of the nature of that story, you need to possess a minimum of empathy. This entire thing is built around the concept of the circle of violence and it only works if you have empathy. The fact that those who did not like that game and went full on rage mode on twitter speaks for itself. Now was it a good Idea for Naughty Dog to go that route? I dont know but I appreciate that game for trying something vastly different.
I was looking for a reaction to this! Glad it was you. I always like to hear your opinion on games knowing how much you like to learn about and discuss the process of making them.
I have a theory that he was lying about just having a concept for Part 3 so they don’t feel rushed in making it and they actually *do* have the story outlined, and the reason I think that is for the HBO show. The show gets made much faster than the games and I believe they’re going to want the newest story beats to happen in the games first. I think Part 3 could release by 2027/2028 after the third season of the show has already aired.
I agree with you, there's probably more story outlined, and they definitely want to avoid a Game of Thrones situation. I think they have longer than that though. Season 2 of the show hasn't started filming yet (it does soon though) and won't release until 2025. I've heard Part 2 could be up to 3 seasons, so I think they have a good 4-5 years to complete the game.

On the point of perfectionists and not noticing details; That extra mile of perfectionism is why people remember some works of art over others. Just look at any other works of art, the perfectionists generally get remembered, directors like Kubrick for example. It's not that people "wouldn't notice the difference", because they might consciously miss stuff like that, but the human mind is exceptional at noticing things that are off from their experienced and lived reality; so when perfectionists create things that tries to have as much perfection as possible it produces a sum of all parts. And the sum is the experience that gets remembered. We don't think about the logs on that wagon, but we experience the totality of the scene and all its parts. Because we've seen lots of other games or movies that skip details and people go "meh". Attention to detail and perfectionism is a very misunderstood trait of artists, and the general truth is that it's the perfectionists that gets remembered, not the "meh".

It was even rumored to be exactly the case. If I recall it correctly, Druckmann even mentions that fans already suspected Joel to be a ghost of his dead self when Ellie talks to him. The problem why so many fans of the first part might have become so mad is that he was shown in the third main trailer, which then everyone hoped he was aiding her in her revenge for Dina's death, which was heavily alluded to I find. Although his comment "You think I'll let you do this on your own?" is symbolically still fitting, it was too much of a misguidance I find. Still, Part II is an absolute story masterpiece.
Although I do like both games, and although narratively TLOU1 was better, j never though TLOU2 was bad either just over baked. I am looking into getting into the field of writing and what this doc confirmed to me is that the writers fell into the common trap of over writing the story for a game that wasn't long enough for there overly large story. So having said that here's a simple solution that would give them more time for the needed character development that was lacking from the game. Take the story you have created and split it and use the other half for a 3rd game, and use TLOU 2 as a send off story for Joel and make his death not feel as forced. Instead I would place his death at the end of the game and have his death be treated in a less brutal and more mysterious nature. For the beginning of the game I would make it start when Joel and Ellie find the space museum and the following scene would be them too g back to town and then we get introduced to Dina and build Ellies and Joel's relationship with them, then about 3/4 of the way through Ellie has Joel tell her the truth then it would be a final mission with Joel, as he goes out trying to make things up with Ellie only for him to stumble into Abby, and well you know what hapens from tgere.
...so I just have to share my opinion with you regarding the pregnancy portion. I completely disagree with your take... The focus of the story was about character's intentions and decisions or results thereof. The pregenancy played a central role in the story, because Ellie's friend and lover, Dana, would go to the ends of the Earth for her, but that equation changed when she learns she is pregnant. Then once the baby is born, this cements Dana's core responsibility. This also changes Ellie's view, as she understands the responsibility she has. It then pegs Ellie to make a crucual decision when Billie reaffirms her responsibility of revenge. Narritively, this series is all about decisions, throughout both of the games. It also has a focus on cycling through ermotions. What TLOU2 did not do, is focus on how vulnerable people who are pregnant make feel around violence. Dana continued being Dana until she couldnt. Mel was faced with it while also traversing. Using pregnancy as a prop was not the intent and this was clearly shown. When Ellie killed Mel and discovered she was pregnant, this impacted her in a very real way. Nothing more innocent than a child, she just killed 2 people. Her morality changed from that moment. It also changed again when Ellie was confronted with Abbey and Liv at the end, and again making a decision to spare them both.
the pregnancy part was just after the fact nonsense. neil said halley added dina getting creampied by jesse on her first day, so just a shoehorned pointless addition. and mel is only pregnant because dina is pregnant. no thought went into it.
Imagine how Much Neil had to go through after the leaks. And more over after the game came out. People were acting like this man stole their wife and sold their kids like c’mon guys. And moreover why was Neil the primary target? Not saying you should target the entire team (you shouldn’t target anyone for making a Videogame) but it’s so odd everyone attacked Neil and Laura even though the game was made by hundreds of passionate developers, writers and actors.
I agree, but I would be fine with his story taking place after P2, even if he is crippled and missing an eye ha. Tommy has always been one of my favorite characters in TLOU universe.
If a game or movie stands on it's on own and doesn't need a sequel then what does it matter if the sequel is bad? Like, I don't like the Star Wars prequels or sequels, but that doesn't detract from my enjoyment of the originals. It would've sucked if Empire had been bad, but we'd still have a New Hope. Imo it would've sucked worse if they were so afraid of making a bad sequel that they didn't make Empire or Return.
The pregnancies do a lot, first off ellie was willing stop at nothing to find abby she was willing abandon her friends and lie to get to abby. killing mel a pregnant woman on their side by mistake, makes her realised that this could be dina thats why towards theatre section they all are willing to let go because it is now destroying ellie's mental health and now it is seriously dawning on her that dina could get hurt and she doesnt want that. Then abby walks in.... The fight it self in the theatre the fact that both of them are pregnant makes you fear for dina, abby would have no problem slitting her throat because she wants ellie to feel the same pain she did. The pregnancies hold a lot of weight you dont need to like it. It emphasises the anyone could die theme and is not implemented into the plot for the sake of it which is why i dont see it as solely shock value...
I think it was mortal kombat 10 some of the developers needed like therapy after from having to watch gore and violent things to see how the body reacts to certain things and how blood flows etc!

Nice documentary, but its such a contrast to the documentary " Grounded" about the OG. Alot of this documentary is lessa bout the game but about the controversys surrounding it: the leaks, Joels death and the aftermath of releasing that story. Druckman delivered a masterpiece with the first games story, why couldn he do it again?
To be honest I don’t think Part 3 should be made there’s nothing more to the story imo, then again I thought the same for Part 2 it was an unnecessary sequel to a game that didn’t need one I’d rather ND move on to another IP since they haven’t created one in 10 years
@@VIP_Worldhow is it narrow minded? Because imo ND are depending way too much on TLOU to keep them relevant, there are literally more remasters and remakes in the franchise compared to actual numbered entries which to me is ridiculous

2:45:59 I had the same thought, but then it occurred to me that... the people that wrote those hateful comments and messages weren't normal... I mean no normal person would have such a fucking aggressive reaction over a fictional character, right? That got to be some form of "mental illness" even if its not a major one, and that led me to thinking what kind of people occupy the gaming space, obviously people of all ages play these games regardless if its rated for 18+ audiences, I know even lil kids that played this even as young as 9 years old, YES obviously on the other hand you have normal healthy people that play games, from little kids to adults (which is definitely the majority) but also there are people with mental health issues, I mean some people would even put a lonely antisocial kid that isolates themselves into their room while playing this types of games into that category, even kids like that can get can get into a state of fury... but some people I guess just can't control it and just target that rage at others without even recognising they are people with emotions, families as well... i wonder what the percentage of people like that in the gaming space is... its just sad to think about.
As great as the presentation and the gameplay/graphical improvements could be, so much of the game still felt lazy or uninspired to me. There was so much more room for a development of Joel and Ellie’s story, it ended up feeling like they couldn’t see a last of us 2 without it an almost immediate killing of Joel and somewhat uninspired revenge story… It really didn’t help how they baited us with the marketing to make it seem like Joel was alive and a bigger part of the game/story. We didn’t get to experience enough of the growth of the characters we grew to love in many ways we experienced more regressions, then the story ends in the way it does and I’m just not sure how they could follow it up to redeem those decisions. It genuinely feels like there was a completely different story built at first that was rapidly changed into what we ended up with.
I feel the same. It lowkey made me feel like i wasted my time playing especially since i didnt like the 10 hour abby section and wasnt moved by the sympathy points they were trying to pull outta me. I almost felt like i wasted my money but i still really liked the ellie parts and the joel flashbacks to the point i only cried at the end when joel and ellie had the convo and joel started getting choked up about to cry. And ellie having to walk back to jackson alone having done so much for basically nothing. Killed all of abbys friends to be like welp o changed my mind becuz of a quick flashback of joel and ill let you go after i killed all these ppl you knew and abby is like ok ill let you live too even though the last time i did that you came to try and kill me again but what do i know. Im stupid and dont understand the revenge bad story and i have no media literacy or emotional intelligence that ppl only equate to being able be sad and cry infront of someone, and neil isnt a pretentious dumbass. Never seek public approval. It will hold you back. They will push you back to the mold and hinder your creativity. Especially if you want to come up with something new and radical.
The rest, I agree with you completely.

the pregnancy discussion I completely disagree with. We are meant to feel worse and worse.
mel is pregnant only because dina is pregnant. that was the entire discussion on the topic between neil and halley. yes, it is THAT shallow.

There’s nothing I’d change about Part II….I’d even be down for a another Seattle 3-day run, but from Tommy’s POV
Only thing I'd change is some of the pacing. That's literally it.

According the documentary, it wasn't divisive at all -- Covid & the leak got folks needlessly riled up, but everyone recognized the genius of the game in the end, ta-da.
Sound design section was fascinating
Curious there was no mention of the broken sound effects though. On ps4 pro If you smash all the windows on nearby cars in a fire fight there are then no gunshot sounds from enemies lol it was really weird. Obviously a limitation of the hardware but it was never addressed at least on PS4 and pro. The other issue was the glass pop in on vehicles. I think the funniest part about this doc is everytime uncharted was brought up it was spoken about like the bastard stepson no one wanted to deal with lol
u4 sold quadruple tlou2 lol
That's an interesting (and humorous!) take on it lol
As someone who works in the gaming industry, and just basing this off of my experience, my read on it was that it's incredibly difficult to work on multiple projects at once, each with their own production schedule and budgets and milestone goals, and release schedule, and balancing those things is incredibly stressful!

It's insane how much the story changed throughout the production.

And if I asked you 'doesn't it bother you to have 5 shrunken heads?!... you might say 'yes, my brother has 20!'"
That's why I don't believe there are good or bad people (especially in this economy). There are simply people - and whatever they pick up during their formative years, that's what they become.
This is why I love what Niels said about empathy. It's sorely lacking in our society. Empathy (to me) means looking at someone through his/her life experiences - "walk in someone else's shoes"

I know this is 7 months old, but the "forced" thing comes from a meta perspective.
Also if dina was with ellie for Seattle day 2 she wouldn't have done what she did to Nora.
Maybe he misheard? I played that part back 3 times to make sure I wasn’t incorrect

I think the “it doesn’t need a sequel” position is incredibly entitled. I prefer creators to have the freedom to tell the stories they want. It’s not their job to make something we like. Let them tell their stories.
It was made to capitalise on the success of the first game.
I just hope naughty Dog can make something new instead of milking tlou again. Three games of tlou1 two games of tlou2 and a show.
Props to this team for creating an artistic experience that was intellectually very challenging. The themes and characters will stick with me forever. Both games combined are the most immersive emotional cinematic experience I’ve ever had in my life.

I don’t understand how you can look at Part 2 and think that it „didn’t add that much“ to the story. After experiencing Part 2 I find the entire story to be unthinkable without Part 2 as a fundamental part of it. Regardless of your opinion.
I’ll spare you my theories for Part 3. But I think part of the disconnect for most fans is that Part 2 leaves a large incomplete feeling at its end, where part 1 felt like it could end there.
I don’t think they thought, “let’s do a part 2” I believe they thought, “this can be a trilogy.”
I think there was an outline for Part 3 before part 2 was finished. One that, hopefully, will be a respectful cap to the entire series.
I would not be surprised but I honestly imagine the backlash and poorer sales than expected likely affected future thoughts on a third part.
@@Mrtwistedblack I’ve had that same thought, but I think they are smarter than that. Killing Joel is the proof to me. Including Neil’s worry about whether or not it was the right decision for their narrative.
It’s just such a huge risk, that I doubt the did that without a powerful outline for the entire story.
But, who knows, we do live in a world where The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker also happened. In fairness, I have more faith in Naughty Dogs writing than I do for modern Disney.
@@MrtwistedblackI thought it sold more than part 1 did when comparing equivalent years.

@@KiIIerz The original is still one of the best looking games in 2024. Work would of started years ago starting with a smaller team, then the rest of the team will join them (The writing would be very much structured). If they started from scratch right now we wouldn't see the game till 2031.. And with the series becoming so popular, I can't see them pushing it back that long. People forget that TLOU2 took 7 years to make.
No anything NEEDS a sequel but given how the first game ended how do you not follow that up, to me part 2 just made the first even better, both games compliment each other perfectly.

I just wish we got more Ellie/joel interaction before he got whacked instead of only flashbacks
Your take on the pregnancy concept is incorrect. It added more weight to the actions in the game
11:45 "I don't remember this guy, who is this?"
That is actually Evan Wells, president of Naughty Dog up until 2023 :D
I disagree fully with most of your takes. Remember "you can't please everyone so you've got to please yourself." And that is exactly what Neil did, he told the story he wanted and if there was something he wishes to change he now has a TV show to change. I really hope he doesn't do any fan service to me or you or anyone else.
Playing it now for the first time and it’s not as bad as everyone makes it out to be… I do feel like playing as Abby was a major mistake though.

Luke’s take on the pregnancy shows he misunderstands the entire concept of the game, “layers of awfulness” is the point.
Yeahh, I never really liked his analysis. After watching several playthroughs from different small streamers, I grew to really understand the game. It took me several years to go from being convinced by the misinformation and leaks at launch to finally getting it.

Fully agree. I like it. Not love it.
But having 5 years of hard work, leaked and ridiculed without the entire observed context is just awful.

Also, Forbes estimates that Valve receives an estimated $13 Billion Dollars in revenue annually and has only 360 listed employees (last time I checked. It could be more or less now. I don’t know why they aren’t hiring more people to finish projects if money isn’t a concern.

i really wanted their to be an intense climax between the character of ellie’s mom, joel, ellie and ellie’s mum was really trynna save the world which is why ellie’s is immune but the elites were after her. a rejoice and then ellie’s mum dies and then she goes on a rampage
Can you imagine a class that they could have put into the multiplayer game where you are a person with a dog and you are hunting another player with that dog? Damn

Very curious if we will get any news September 26 2024!

Even if this statement wasn't meaning confirmation we're getting a part 3 definitely. This franchise is just too big.
Wake up babe, new Luke Reacts Movie just dropped!
i some how avoided the Joel death.
I still don't understand why ppl didn't understand the 1st Trailer showing ellie mad talking to Joels Ghost
Shame we didn’t get to hear from the ones I needed to hear from the most. The ones forced to make those gifs…

Not to mention poor development and not enough time to build relationships with most of the new characters that were introduced.
I feel the same. It lowkey made me feel like i wasted my time playing especially since i didnt like the 10 hour abby section and wasnt moved by the sympathy points they were trying to pull outta me.
