Now that's a surprise. Never thought rolling stock from the pre-grouping era would get such a livery, considering how BR was disposing of old stock in favor of new engines, coaches, etc. Really obscure. And I love it!

Good morning Sam! Was not expecting a new video at this time of day. Your videos have helped me in rekindling a passing interest in modeling that stemmed from my grandfather, who would take me to train shows or show me the models he had. After he passed, I kind of stopped thinking about modeling for a long time (grief manifested I suppose). Seeing the passion you evoke when you review these beautiful models really stokes a fire within me. Thank you for helping me heal, and for helping to realize how rewarding and wonderful this hobby can be. -Tyler
Those Genesis coaches look very nice :) the blue and grey does look good on them. It would be nice if somebody had a similar product line for N scale. Virtually all non-bogie coaching stock is old, long discontinued models which lack modern finesse.
I pre-ordered a rake of Hatton’s Genesis, GWR coaches, I waited an enormously long time, only to be eventually told they had more orders than stock, so they cancelled my pre-order on me. I then had to go out and buy the Hornby version, which is excellent by the way. Now I find out, Hatton’s are ordering another batch of these coaches, and they couldn’t even be bothered to let the original, let down customers, know!
Ahh sorry to hear that Tony, that's very disappointing isn't it? This isn't another batch though, this is part of the initial batch, the announcement for which was held back as a surprise! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@5:10 my understanding is that on some railways, the centre axle was removed when the coaches were cascaded down to branchline working, and thus ran as long wheelbase four wheel coaches.
Hattons has a customer here with me. Seeing your example, I'm glad to have wait to see those coaches for sale, the quality is here, and the price is decent. A big buy incoming for me as soon as Hattons have them on their shelves !

A very odd late livery for a pre grouping coach (and I dont have any locos or rolling stock to go with it!! ) but that only gives me an excuse now! Hattons have done an outstanding job on the Genesis coaches overall ,and so much so that I have two sets on order ( LBSC and Midland) and I'm finding it difficult not to order more liveries!
I blame you entirely for the fact I just bought one. Should be an interesting addition to the collection though, with some fun modelling potential. Keep up the good work!
The only picture I found at Wolverton the coach has the generator van decal further down the van... Only one step at each side on the ends with an additional vertical grab rail and interestingly a standard Overhead wire triangle sticker... That would be easy to rectify...
I've found a photo online of the generator coach & the cinema coach. Comparing both versions; Hattons & Hornby R40328, the Hattons version looks more realistic.
The footboards fitted to the coach upon delivery are double versions with both an upper and a lower footboard for use at stations with very low or non exsistant platforms to help passengers climb on board - as was the case in the early days of the railways. The 'spares' in the bag are an alternative version only having the upper footboard as became prototypical when platform heights got higher.
@@stefanattrill8565 The footboards are secured by screws to the under frame. Undo them and the footboards should come away - if they don’t then it could be a bit of stray glue has accidentally stuck it to the under frame. A significant improvement on Hornbys efforts though as you can change them back if your modelling interests change.
The only criticism is that there aren't enough of these genesis coaches, with many of them sold out. Hattons needs to produce more of them in the coming years
I agree. I placed an order in March for their H4-4T-701A - 4 Wheel 3rd 1501 in SR Olive green. Today, they sent me an email stating they cannot supply me with the coach. Apparently, there was a miscalculation and miscommunication concerning the number of pre-orders they placed with the factory. My concern is that we will see them appearing on eBay etc., and listed at silly prices.
Thank you Mukka. Did not know about this blue and grey coach till your video came out. I just ordered one. Will look good behind one of my research liveried locos.👍 Cheers from Oz.
I'm going to see if I can find some 'naughty saucy people' to put inside the carriage. So, when the lights are on, you can see what they are getting up to.
Hi Sam, great and unusual piece of rolling stock! I am sure there will be a great take up for those modelling the era. I now have my Genesis GWR 4 coach pack and also the excellent full brake which I am very pleased with. I didn't even consider the 'other' manufacturer who seemed to jump on the band wagon.
I have 3 of the GWR 4 wheelers. They are nice coaches. I also have 4 LBSC 4 wheelers, 7 GNR 6 wheelers, 6 GCR 6 wheelers and 4 Midland 4 wheelers pre ordered. The roof is pretty easy to remove. Just hold the body and pull one end of the roof off and it just pulls loose with little effort. Though one of the axles on my GWR brake third is a little stiff, but I think that should be easily fixed with a touch of oil on the axle bearings.
Excellent video, thank you as I have learnt something new today. It is interesting to see on 'today's railway' how prevalent generator coaches are on working trains; in particular the steam and diesel excursion specials and various modern coaching stock movements with diesel traction hauling them. I always thought the roller shuttered MKI BGs were mainly a 'works van' in the event of the diesel or steam loco breaking down.
Hatton’s does make a great product and worth what you pay for them. I think as a manufacturer they are very good. So far out of a few small problems with the diesels that gave them a bad rap I still like their products . I like this coach it is definitely unique.
Direct input from a recognized model critic -- how exciting! We're you a contracted consultant, Sam, or volunteering your opinion on behalf of the hobby? I hope someday you'll advise us as to the experience. Apart from that it's a lovely and unique coach. One question: I didn't see any generators inside it.
Ordered mine but as the interior is seating I didn’t get the lighted version ,I like this sort of model I too have a gresley buffet in blue/grey something different Sam ,I got the hattons email alert just as you posted your video ,hope we don’t have people buy up loads and sell them on ?bay for four times as much as they are limited mmm
Yeah I'd probably do the same - not much point illuminating the seating I guess.... still nice to see what the lighting is like on the rest of the coaches! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I worked for the Railway for 45 years in the divisional civil engineers department . and we had one of those coaches. on our tunnel train .as you said for generating electricity bloody noisy it was prewar
Thanks, Sam. Because of your excellent detailed review, I've placed an order. An ideal companion for my three Isle of Wight Class O3 diesel engines. After nationalisation, the Island painted some of their rolling stock in department liveries, so this is ideal for my fictional Island layout.

I must confess I don’t usually find rolling stock as interesting as locos. But seeing a coach like that in BR’s rail blue livery!!!!! I knew I had to watch this! Lovely product
Yes , very impressive cute wagons, I ordered two with lights few day ago , they should land here in Australia this week. Thank you Sam for great informative video channel , highly enjoyable.
A time will come when model manufacturers all around the world will have to comply a Sam's Trains Protocol to be officially classified, for the sake of the hobby

I saw their post on Facebook and knew it must be time to check for the new video haha. It does look brilliant and the quality is very impressive, and as much as I love the uniqueness of this particular version of the coach I'm going to have to pass on it, because if I could afford a shiny new Hattons coach I'd be going for the LB&SCR ones xD
I like most here had a train set years ago, but unlike most have nothing now and interested in Sam's reviews if I ever did start collecting it would be running on landing so to speak. Your reviews are top notch detailed and thorough I know this not a review but well announced.
What a surprise this time of day Sam. As an announcement, she certainly looks the part and fine quality for the money, even more so as a limited edition. Everything seems to be spot on. No doubt that this one has been thoroughly tested before sending it to you for the broadcast, but nonetheless it seems to be an excellent value product. They even have the colours exactly correct, and the interior lights are precisely as they should be. Perhaps the roof seems to be a bit bland on camera but some very light DIY weathering may address it perhaps. But for the money, this is excellent. Well done. Oh, and sticky middle sliding wheels usually can be resolved by some silicon spray... just a light touch usually does it.
haha yeah sorry about the change of schedule! Agreed, it's all spot on and very impressive for me. No doubt it was tested, though I'm purchasing many of these as a regular customer, so full reviews will follow! Going on this model alone though, very impressive! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks for the video Sam. A very interesting version. I now have three of the Hattons Genesis coaches, (all Departmental,) and the quality and value for money is just great.
When you add the p&p it becomes expensive. However, couldn't resist and went ahead and ordered one. I purchased one of the Hornby SR 6 wheeler coaches, with lights, when they first came out and it will be interesting to compare the two.
I have some Hornby 6-wheelers and find they all derail on curves. The curves are wider than Radius 2 and attached to a solid baseboard with cork underlay. Hornby doesn't appear to care when I've raised the issue; maybe it's a design fault.

Hi Kev - yes I did hear about that, and it is very disappointing - sorry to hear it mate :( Hopefully they will make more in the future... fingers crossed!
A wonderful change. A unusual livery for an old coach. It would be good if they also found information on the old Cinema coach. Maybe the NRM archive centre might have information. In the entertainment section. 😮 . A lovely model. Unfortunately it will never be produced in N gauge. But it’s still a great little coach. Well done Hattons. 🎉
Compared to the Hornby offering, Hattons have been quite thoughtful in the way they have designed these coaches. Although quite expensive these coaches look a good option for somebody modelling a pre-war branch line. You might test these coaches on a 1st radius curve, and on a curved point, as this will be useful to those with limited space. Not everybody has got a loft to spare! Thanks for uploading.
Hi Sam I just wanted to say that If you have Dirty track the Coaches lights will Flicker whereas Battery powered lights won't but overall Like Both. Cheers.Lewis
@@SamsTrains my pleasure Sam and I Love watching your videos and Livestreams and I'm Thinking Going a smaller gauge possibly 009 but Still running 00 gauge as well as I would like to Get a Double Fairlie also it'll be a change from 00 as I have never Modelled in 009 So I want to give it ago as I plan to have a Station on my 00 layout where one side of the platform is Standard gauge (00) and the other side Narrow gauge (009) and there will areas of Layout where both gauges will meet I.e Via bridges where the standard gauge goes under the bridge while the Narrow gauge goes over the bridge and then in another area The Narrow gauge goes under the bridge and the Standard gauge goes over the bridge. Hi Sam. My generator coach was delivered yesterday. Great review and model from Hatton’s. Is there any chance of the matching cinema coach in the pipeline to complete such an unusual set.
I tried to post a link to a photo from the web, but it didn't allow me. The photo also includes the cinema coach too. Mmmm, I wonder if Hatton's may manufacture that coach too?
That is a nice little coach, I wonder if it had been built in Teakl when new? I really like the way the lighting works. If I was to buy one, I would have to repaint it and that would spoil the main idea of the model. Well done Hattons. Martin. (Thailand)
Maybe! Did I say it was GER? Could've been! I guess you could buy a duller livery if you wanted to repaint one? It'd be torture to ruin this one, haha! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Could it have been like the 'Dutch Vans' on Irish Railways? An independent generator van for locos that did not have a boiler to heat coaches (the cinema car)? Fascinating model. Getting one!
Hello Sam, I never expected to see a coach this old in BR Blue, makes for a nice change indeed! Could imagine it on a BR maintenance of way train or brake-down service for sure. Had a question too, where should a beginner to this hobby start in your opinion? Thanks for all the great videos so far, and keep up the great work!
Absolutely - I had no idea this existed until recently! Generally I'd recommend a train set if you're just getting started - they include everything you need... and you don't have to start a train set on the floor, you could build baseboards right away if you were serious about it! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great video as usual Sam, fantastic coach that one, very unusual, also like you happened to use a Royal Leamington Spa labelled truck to lest the coupling, my little part of the UK.. Have a good one.
Good stuff, Sam. Regarding the 'extra' footboards that come with the pack... I'm wondering whether or not they have the cut-out to accomodate the centre sliding wheelset? If not, I would presume the footboard is for use if you choose to remove the centre wheelset in order to run it as a four-wheel coach. Of course this wouldn't be the case with this Blue/Grey 'Generator Coach' but I suspect the inclusion of the extra board is common to all six-wheel models for the sake of expediting packing at the factory. The 'company liveried' coaches in the Genesis series I suspect have the suggested option being run as a four-wheel vehicle for the sake of variation to the trains which users might form from these vehicles. With them being of non-specific design I feel this is an excellent option. well done Hattons... well done Sam!
Thanks for the comment - yes you could be right, as there's no gap in the "spare" ones. Always great to have more choice though, not less, agreed! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
hi sam.a lovely model well finished.. i believe that the full length footplates are to replace the split footplate on the model should you decide to remove the centre wheels.
for a moment since i've never seen the actual coach i thought that center wheel was prototypical as some sort of measurement showing or something. It may not be accurate but i think it looks rather interesting... 🤔
That generator coach looks great! I'd probably get quite a few Hattons Genesis coaches if I didn't have to pay international shipping rates, as I live in Australia. I have one 6-wheel coach from 'the other manufacturer' currently in transit in order to get a 6-wheel coach, but I'll probably stick with Ratio (Peco) GWR 4 wheel coach kits to build a rake in the future, considering that I've just about finished an LNWR corridor 3rd and I'm really happy with the model, build experience and overall price. Would you consider looking at building a Peco/Ratio coach in the future? It's not a huge range with about a dozen coaches all up, but they make for nice Era 2 carriages, they're accessible from every Peco stockist, and they're not too dissimilar from the skills used to put together the 3D print carriages you made a while back.
Ahh yeah shipping is a bummer... it is when I order things from the US myself. I totally would love to try one of those kits some time - great idea! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Now that's a surprise. Never thought rolling stock from the pre-grouping era would get such a livery, considering how BR was disposing of old stock in favor of new engines, coaches, etc. Really obscure. And I love it!
Exactly - it's quite an unusual thing to see!

Thanks Paul - very much so! I'd love to see the Cinema coach in model form!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
After a very long time the coaches are here! I can't wait to see my LBSCR Atlantic pull my rake of genesis coaches! Regards Terry
Absolutely! I can't wait either Terry - going to be a good time!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Lights look great
Compared to the Hornby offering, Hattons have been quite thoughtful in the way they have designed these coaches. Although quite expensive these coaches look a good option for somebody modelling a pre-war branch line. You might test these coaches on a 1st radius curve, and on a curved point, as this will be useful to those with limited space. Not everybody has got a loft to spare! Thanks for uploading.
I think so too Allen, I'd be interested to see a 1st radius test too!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
And, Marc Models make etched brass kits of the combination!
Hattons site seems to be down at the moment. Looks good although not sure where it's going to fit in on my upcoming layout.
Hi Sam I just wanted to say that If you have Dirty track the Coaches lights will Flicker whereas Battery powered lights won't but overall Like Both. Cheers.Lewis
Yes that's true Lewis - same with locos really, on dirty track the performance won't be as good!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
But there is a capacitor so this will help reduce flicker.
Take care my friend. Cheers.Lewis

What blockhead at BR made that decision? Imagine how much it would go for today!
Hi Sam. My generator coach was delivered yesterday. Great review and model from Hatton’s. Is there any chance of the matching cinema coach in the pipeline to complete such an unusual set.
I am hoping for the same from Hatton's, a matching cinema coach.
Pretty cool little car, interesting they have such a limited production run but still really cool😊
Hi Sam. A lovely model - but I'm struggling to undersatnd a 19thC coach in BR Blue/grey!
haha I know! It's very strange, but it really did happen!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I tried to post a link to a photo from the web, but it didn't allow me. The photo also includes the cinema coach too. Mmmm, I wonder if Hatton's may manufacture that coach too?
Lovely dinky little thing, I adore it
haha me too!
I love that coach
I do too!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great update Sam . So many liveries and options. I really like the GNR lined teak in batch one, and batch 2 looks very promising . Time to choose ...
Thank you! Yeah me too... so much to choose from!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Could it have been like the 'Dutch Vans' on Irish Railways? An independent generator van for locos that did not have a boiler to heat coaches (the cinema car)? Fascinating model. Getting one!
Yeah that's possible - can see it running heating maybe!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Good discussion. But was there a separate exhaust
The cinema coach basically looked similar to a full brake coach.
What a beautiful coach, they look wonderful, I might get one too
Cheers Jasper & Willow
I can recommend it - such a cool and usual item!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Already got mine bought :)
I can recall a similar vehicle in a bay platform ant Manchester Piccadilly station many years ago
Fascinating! I wonder what that was? Could it have been this very one?
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi sam I hope you're ok This is a very beautiful model great to see affordable coaches on the market
Hope you are too Lewis - it sure is! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great video Sam, Looks like a nice coach especially with it wearing the blue and grey livery.
Thanks David - it sure is! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great video as usual Sam, fantastic coach that one, very unusual, also like you happened to use a Royal Leamington Spa labelled truck to lest the coupling, my little part of the UK.. Have a good one.
Thank you! Ahh fantastic - that worked out well then!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Wonder if Hattons will make a cinema coach to go along with it
Hey Sam we are haveing a hurricane & tornado here.
Cheers Jasper & Willow
Oh wow, hope you're staying safe... all the best to you all!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
if hattons does this in N Gauge i will be buying it
Excellent video Sam. LOVE the engineering on that middle axle.😍😍😍
Think they’ll be on the second batch?
Sam, Thanks, Why did you have to show the coach, I have to go and order it from Hattons
Now that’s a quality coach. Now if Hatton’s could make the stove r
I didn’t even know this existed lol😂
Never seen this BR coach, unique!
Me neither until now - it sure is!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
hi sam.a lovely model well finished.. i believe that the full length footplates are to replace the split footplate on the model should you decide to remove the centre wheels.
Ahh duly noted, thanks for the info!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
for a moment since i've never seen the actual coach i thought that center wheel was prototypical as some sort of measurement showing or something. It may not be accurate but i think it looks rather interesting... 🤔
haha yeah it does... I remember the Dynamometer cars have something similar on them, haha!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Maybe wheel removal is for folk to fit resistors for block working ?
Ahh interesting - that could be it??
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
