Hey all! I don't want to talk about my bindings anymore than I did in the video... BUT, if you've been using the Supermatics, let us all know your experience with em! Especially if you've broken anything on them. 🏂✌
Did you use the normal supermatic or the carbon version?
@@mtcsypkens normal ones.
@RyanKnapton one reminder is the supermatic add to the boot out factor, whereas the nidecker nx2 do not
@EmilysActiviTV 💯. 'Flow NX2'. Nidecker Supermatics have a beefy heel cup. They did provide a better overall 'feel' for me though. I won't claim either are in the category of 'dogshit'. So that's nice to know perhaps.
This was my first season here in Argentina (2024) and they are amazing, Im 46 with back pain and they helped me a lot!!!
It took 2/3 days to properly set up the bindings, once you get the sweet spot you will enjoy the montain more than ever!
Binding companies should be fighting to pick you up and make a signature model that takes over the world
It'd be a big part of the whole dream coming true.
Thank you for writing that.
Indeed
the guy in the background at 1:24 - you made me rewatch 30s of this video :D
Keep at it, man!
😆We've all been there. You can do it! ❤
"Nidecker Supermatic - We're not dog shit."
We need Ryan Knapton binding 🎉
Franknaston bindings TM 😎
Frakenknapton bindings?
@@menthous305 I just slapped Frankenstein, Knapton and Burton together.
I got mine last year. I love them. Literally changed my life. Brother used them for a run. He ordered them on the chair 😅.
thanks so much for the follow clip! I didn't even notice your bindings. Got the 1 strap off only 2 more to go! sick turns as always
SOO Siiiick on the SnowSkate Bruddah!
🤙🏼🤙🏼
Really enjoying the consistent content brother, keep up the solid work 🤙 I always appreciate, and enjoy your videos related to the interface. Burton, please, we need a Ryan Knapton inspired Binding, please give us the third strap!!!! 🙏
C’mon Burton! Make a Ryan Knapton High Rise Carver Special Bindings! Take my money 💰
yeah snowskate shoutout! thanks can't wait for the interview.
You made this binding comparison so easy to understand! I’m definitely considering the Nidecker after hearing about their rear-entry system and carving capabilities. 👏
I just got my pair today..Cant wait to try them.
The bindings are undeniably very comfortable and work well with the Knapton twin. Still haven't found a soft boot binding I'm totally satisfied with.
Thanks for the input Dave. I know some of the interfaces you worked with, so it's valuable input. Thanks Man.
This is awesome thanks for making this video! Would definitely love to see more gear reviews and how to's if/when you have time!
Man a 20m side cut and those Frankensteins!! Love it!
Dude you seriously need to join some snowboard manufacturer in binding and boots R&D, so you can design your own stuff "for good" and share it with the world! You've got a unique kit that works pretty well, and you sure know a thing or two about carving that everyone would appreciate accessing!
Another banger!!! I appreciate the details on your setup more than you know. I ride a 2019 knapton twin with entry level specs (29.5cm waist, 8.7m sidecut, 157cm). I love burton bindings as well. Been on 2013 cartels for ages - I made the mistake of getting a large for my size 11 boots, and realize now that their old, “size 10.5 and up boots need a large binding” was more of a guideline than a rule - I could never center large cartels over my knapton twin with a size 11 boot. I have new medium cartel X bindings in the mail. Gonna frankenstein them a bit myself, with large replacement straps so they strap in/center easier. Also just ordered new Ride Tridents to replace my clapped 2016 ones with over 100 days (cool to see you’re rocking the same). A 32.5cm waist, 16M sidecut, 157 cm Knapton twin will be my next upgrade as dollars allow. Thank you for your service, Ryan. You’re an inspiration to all of us. (Read last sentence in the voice of the shark from finding nemo)
just checked out your vids. Nice riding Man! Have you gotten to try of the larger radii boards yet? That's a massive jump IMO. If you haven't, we should chat. You can send me a dm on IG
Snowboarding is kinda in its adolescent years. But if you were around for its infancy, you'd know, 5 gallon pale molded plastic and that old chairs foam pads help design what we ride today.
Keep shredding bud!
Beautifully said. And thanks.
I did Frankensteined 3 strap Burtons for a season and they were fine. But then I moved to ski boots on Bomber TD3s and I'm much happier
Just 2 days ago i talked to a friend on how to create a binding with a strap that sits higher, just like your 3rd strap and how that would improve performance.
And he was like : nah, if it would be useful they would already have done it.
Now i found your video and you did exactly what i was thinking about xD
2 Binding wishes to review: Rome Black Label, and Burton Step Ons :-)
Dude you're a legend! I always strap in super hard but Iam sure that i have had a 3th strap I could loosen them a little bit!
Wynn here has been using supermatics for two seasons, liked them so much i got a second pair. I have problems with my left hand and I had been using Flow NX2 for years because they were easier to get in and out of - i like them but definitely not for everyone. The supermatic has the release lever on the inside and i can reach both with my right hand (i would not be able to reach the Burton release lever on the outside of left foot). Stepping into the supermatic the fit is tight right away, on the flows i always had to fiddle with the levers to get pulled down tight. Use the supermartic on my Gnu Rider's Choice and Donek Phoenix. I have been using Now on the wide Donek Flux for carving, but I'm not happy with the lever on the toe cap sticking out up front, perhaps I'll try a supermatic on it. Thanks for the great vid Ryan! Now i have something to refer people to when the subject of your bindings come up! Funny how people are always only asking about your board when the bindings are such a vital part of the package...
wow. the angle on those hellside turns 😮
Time for some Ryandecker Supermatic!!!
I really like my Supermatics. The rear entry is just so easy to use - I have so far only strapped in once with them after I fell in super deep snow. My Salomon Echo dual Boa boots work well with the Supermatics. The only minor criticism is the weight - but I only notice that when actually carrying the board. When riding the weight difference compared to some light 2-strap setups feel irrelevant. For reference I'm 5' 11", weigh 190lbs and am 53 years old. Been riding since about '93.
I went for the Supermatics after Malcolm Moore gave them such a good review.
However, when it comes to step-ins I will forever mourn the death of the Switch system. I rode that setup for about 15 years until my Switch boots sadly fell apart. The bindings however were as good as the day I first used them.
Burton „Flex“ binding from 1993… with 3 straps. Why isn’t there such gear nowadays?
Really loving my supermatics, Switched to them last season and post ACL replacement made a HUGE difference when fighting with straping in. Over all gave me more energy for actual riding. Only issues I've had is with a hard knee brace the latch is too low. I can't flex to release my back foot. Some adapting of the release is going to happen this year.
Been using them for ski patrol, this will be the 3rd season on them. They've been great except for a couple things, some boots work better than others, I switched to a non-Nidecker boot at the tail end of last season and it seems harder to get the metal pawl to engage, and the tiny adjustment buckle locks, don't stay down, so I lose my strap position. I haven't tried the Burton Step-Ons due to cost, but I want to.
Welcome back
Happy season Ryan
would be interesting to see a video on how you frankensteined your bindings.
I remember my Burton Air had bindings with a top strap.
That’s interesting. I’m all in for easier step in/out bindings (I have step on on my knapton twin), but noticed the challenge for pretty much all of the options out in the market is always about lack of forward lean (if you’re really into high angles carving). The second issue is bulky heel cups overhanging the board on deep carving (although fixable by getting a wider board, not willing to spend on a new board just because of my current binding set up). So for now, i’m just extra careful with heel side carving on soft days
Would like to see you try some Burton Step Ons. Your boot is attached to the highback in a sort of similar way to how you strap your boot to your highback.
Also, have you ever thought about fixing your highback so it can't fold over? Would need some sort of release for some lifts, but might offer you more control?
The response I Usually give to people: Just ride whatever you feel comfortable. Even if it’s a nice monsters that you’ve got. Nice winter for you 🏂.
Nice vid as always. Your bindings are mad, in a good way. 😄
The only baseplate I've ever broken was err, Burton! lol No hate, stuff happens.
Whaaaaaa-a-a-a-t...!? First time I've seen you show off those bindings. Why aren't all bindings like this? We have a high back to lean on for the heel edge, but on the toe edge we're left with just cutting into the top of our foot and trying to strap in tight enough that our heels don't lift in the cups. I might try to find a couple of ratchet straps to wrap round the shin of the boot and the high back... then get confused at lifts cos I can't remember how to get my foot out. 🤣
You should really try the Supermatic Carbon, another world and much more suited to your aggressive riding.
I bought them and i am really excited, how they are...😊
7 weeks i will know it😎🤠😜
Burton pushing No strap step in bindings for years, now coming in 2025 the new Burton 3 strap binding lol
How do you even get your boots in with soooo much forward lean!? I mean against the binding heel cups😂. Love the customizations!
Have you ever tried flow bindings for getting better heelside carves? Their design uses much more leverage bc they got that wire going from the highback down to the front if the baseplate
ryan have you tried or heard of the RVL8 binding wings?
i was going to suggest the same @RyanKnapton
Hey, Ryan, great video! Don't you have Driver X shoes? How do they work with the Supermatics system? No backlash, if you know what I mean?
Holy heelcup batman!
@@rollingedges9469 The both got big ones. It'd be interesting if I needed to change board width specs if I rode a modified set of those. I'd naturally assume the overall boot out potential would be higher. This was on pretty firm snow, so it didn't happen other than on the turn that got away from me... In which I went for a higher edge angle late and couldn't get back into control. Right before 7:16 something 'interesting' happens. Obviously a tiny bit of bootout, but that occurred moreso as a result of me not 'striking' the top of the turn, as much as I generally do with the Frankie's.
Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Haven't tried Supermatics but I do have Kaon-CX which is kinda the same chassis and while I like those, the heel loop is just too thick and I'd need a wider board to ride those duck (I'm on a 30cm wide 16m scr). The funny thing is that I also tried Flow Freeballer and those don't have any highback but the "heel strap" got in the way and the total footprint was bigger than for example Salomon Quantum or Flow Fuse Carbon. Less footprint == narrower board possible for the same edge angle.
You've got to review the Flow NX2-Carbon!!!! They have no hoops to boot out on!
The low profile without the 'hoop' is a nice feature. I've used some NX2's. Unfortunately they hurt my right heel way more than would be tolerable for me. ( I do have a bump on the back of my right foot, so that may just be unique to me). I have seen a few of those bindings break. And the overall feel wasn't nearly as nice as my frankensteins. I'm using different boots now (Ride Tridents), so maybe I'll give em another try with these stiffer boots.
They are probably the best soft boot carving stock bindings.
@@RyanKnapton Ahh, that's too bad, sorry to hear that. Hoping we see a Knapton Frankenstein collab with Burton/Ndicker one day, I'd be a customer.
@@brianp9268 I want them as my next binding next season, currently on step-ons, which are great for reducing foot pain due to straps but I want a lower profile for my heel turns
@@RyanKnapton This guy makes a 3 strap binding (prototype?) called edgeLever, and he rides a Donek. ua-cam.com/video/ANNoh6zXLZo/v-deo.html
Very interesting video. The third strap idea is great and I’d really like to try that..I wonder how you feel about canted baseplates in general, as so many bindings, supermatic included, have that these days… it’s super hard to find non canted bindings.. my preference in bindings is a non canted baseplate and a super stiff highback. I just switched to Burton cartelx bindings but replaced the ankle strap with one that has more padding. But tbh the highback is not tall and stiff enough for me.. anyway thanks for making these kind of nerdy videos! I love the content!
You're seeing and feeling physics on a mountain in a very unique way.
Most of us take our gear for granted and never really question it.
Thanks for the last two sentences.
🏂✌️
Just curious, why not use one of those rigid ski boot systems on your snowboard for ultimate control?
I’d think it may be terrific for laying down pencil lines on the snow, but seriously restrictive for the other 50% of his riding (free style buttering btw each turn)
I've been using the supermatics for 2 seasons now, when they work they work well, but i need to have the straps looser than i'd like and if there is any snow or ice on the mechanism then its very very hard to get the 3rd click in (without it the highback isn't fully locked in place). i'm now looking for new bindings for this weekend as i' v' had enough fiddling with them.
They are very well made, they are just not for me.
Put heel risers in your boots this will allow your knees to bend more and have a forward lean
Uff Da! That's attacking the wrong problem IMO. And can lead to further pain through the body.
My solution is a larger lever that feels like sitting into a deluxe 'Lazy Boy' couch. Feels so much better than sitting on and off of a metal folding chair.
🤘😎
Been tinkering as well with a third strap concept and getting more leverage on toes side via other means as well. Have had some breakthroughs.
I know you didnt want to talk abt it but definitely curious how those cans have enough structural integrity to be helpful
You are seeing the problem correctly.
I've had about 10 versions. And when they 'cave' and bend over too much, that's when I add further structural integrity by tightening parts up with something as simple gorilla tape, or replacing the can parts. Or adding more of them.
Nothing is off the table when exploring optimization.
I wonder what it would cost to 3d print a taller highback and then add padding to it
But once you go this route id think you need a boot with a stiffer spine behind it toatch the highback
@AriEhrlich 3D printing is amazing. The structural integrity is shit. I'm snapping foosball handles with this, and those physics are microscopic vs. what it involves with performance snowboarding.
Stay tuned. I took some big gambles, and I'll be able to show y'all wtf I'm talking about. It'll fucking wild homies!
I'm pushing in the directions I believe to be true.
That probably makes sense to like 20 people so far.
Y'all are gonna love it.
🤘😎
Instead of having 3 or 4 straps on a soft boot, why not go with the standard 2 straps on a stiffer boot?
My man!
Did your heel lift raiding on frontside on the roll? Did you feel this?
You need Your own binding series, Ryan. I think You are famous enough to afford it...
And Extra hard soft boots....
Hopefully you attempted to patent that design haha no one's out here making 3 strap supercarvers
How do you like the goggles? I have some adapt 2s on the way!
These are exactly the boots I have...
Are those boots Ride tridents?
Have you tried step ins before or are they just the worst possible thing for carving haha maybe Frankenstein a mid strap
You sir need some Rome Cleaver 🫡
What about boots I can't find ones stiff enough I might have to use my ski boots soon
Nidecker kita 23-24 nidecker index 24-25 stiffness 9-10.
Dude you should look into magic of 3d printing and design your own highback or the whole binding :P Or just go into softest hardboot, i think that's the easiest :P
Been riding on Supermatics since they were available, 3 seasons now,. I like them a lot, and only use my meteorites in deep pow. Weight hasn’t been an issue. So convenient to step in on the top. On the uncrowded days I will step in at the bottom and ride away at the top. Love not having to sit and strap in. 🏂😎
Get that Folgers sponsorship homie.
Ryan it's time to get a 3d printers for rapid prototyping your bindings
Next time I’ll see someone weight whining about the supermatic I’ll send them straight here.
I’m really surprised you don’t just get custom bindings made for you somehow. Those seem soooo ghetto lol
I love your bindings. They tell me about a person who wants something different and is willing to walk away from the herd to find it.
🤜🤛
No more driver X?
There is a carbon version with a higher highback and carbon is lighter.
We need Burton Knapton bindings!!
You mean beside trying to get your soft boots to feel like a hard boot and binding control on a normal width board so you can handle Turner MCC . Try Nidecker kita hybrid boots with full tilt flexon tounges on the outside for leverage and Now Recon bindings. Ditch the ridiculous piano width board and angle you feet for Christ sakes...get ya something steeper than double greens.
Since booting out isn't an issue with your ultra wide setup, I'd be curious how you'd like a burton step on binding. Sounds like the boots could be an issue for you, but i find that the connection points make turning feel very different (faster). It feels like you pull the board over rather than push into the bindings.
Great question. I've ridden them. It was years ago while I was on a much smaller radius. I felt like I handled them like a boss, and they weren't complete dogshit.
Now that said, on the larger radius boards, they are not providing enough physical pleasure for riders to hit higher edge angles effortlessly.
I got a crew that Kristin and I love shredding with. The Dad could use Supermatics IMO. Reach out to them Westley.. I'll document your experience.
Do all yourselves a favor and check out this crew I'm talking about. Search 'Krasonsnowboardcrew'. On whatever platform.
This is wild shit going on towards the evolution of how amazing snowboarding can feel, and how easy it can be with the right equipment.
🤘😎

Press a hole in the snowboard? What do you mean?
I've been obsessed with your frankenstein arts and crafts bindings ever since I got a glance at them a few years ago! Soft boot carvers will always find ways to tighten up the connection! I've been using two old soft ankle straps cinched around the top of my boot and it really helps! The stiffest women's boot I could find at the time was the burton supreme. It's definitely not stiff. Changing the liners helped a ton. Plus, the top laces never tightened without still having that bit of slack. I switched to men's boots (ride trident) and am trying a triple boa. We'll see, but I really liked my strap contraption for just a little more strength at the top of my boot. ua-cam.com/users/shortsw9ojBUnriI0?feature=shared
Yeah Emily! We will have to get your thoughts indeed, on the Tridents once you ride em for quite awhile.
