  • We were honoured to host renowned Institute Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Daron Acemoglu, as he presented his latest book, 'Power and Progress: Our Thousand-Year Struggle Over Technology and Prosperity'.
In the book, together with Simon Johnson, Acemoglu explores the complex relationship between technology and economic development, tracing the evolution of innovation and its impact on society from the Middle Ages to the present day. Drawing on a wealth of historical and contemporary data, he argues that the choices we make about technology can either serve the interests of a select few or promote widespread prosperity, as progress is not inevitable, and the direction of technological change is shaped by politics, institutions, and power dynamics.
The discussion, moderated by Andrew J Scott, Professor of Economics at LBS and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), and hosted by Elias Papaioannou, Professor of Economics at LBS and Co-Academic Director of the Wheeler Institute for Business and Development, examined how technology affects the distribution and growth of resources while being shaped by economic and social incentives. They delved into the political, economic, and social factors that contribute to the disparities in economic development and how reshaping the way we innovate can lead to a more equitable and prosperous future in the context of developing countries and beyond.

Well, in the spirit of the previous comment (Adams Ohize's), let me add: thank you to the Wheeler Institute for uploading this important talk to UA-cam. For the many, many people who could not be there on this occasion, this video is so beneficial and educative.
As Prof. Acemoglu says, technology can be quite a blessing sometimes. Being able to 'participate' in such an event without being physically present -- that's the good stuff that technology provides!
