  • Can you temporarily stop taking weight loss medications (Ozempic)? Fox News
I'm skipping my shot this week, so that next week I am going to be able to eat a little bit more. It is my favorite day of the year. I love the foods, the smell of the house, I love it.
I obviously didn't want to like pig out and gain a ton of weight on vacation, but I decided I wanted to enjoy myself a little bit more.
I'm just going to skip a week and we'll see how it goes this morning.
Many Americans are getting back on those diet drugs after pausing treatments to enjoy their favorite holiday treats. Our next guest says they are ways to safely restart those medications. And joining us now is New York City weight loss specialist doctor Sue Decotiis. Sue, happy New Year. Happy New Year to you. I have so many questions. But first, so some people are pausing and I'm trying to understand it all. Some people are pausing, by the way, because they can't afford it. They want to take your Christmas is expensive time of year, and these drugs can be expensive if they're not covered by insurance. And so many people are using it off label and so it's not covered, but other people because they want to indulge. So explain to me what happens. Are they not eating at all when they're on the drug. So they have to get off so they can have a full plate of turkey or whatever they're eating?
Well, you know, I see many patients on these medications. I practice in New York City. And so many of my patients have had parties nonstop since Thanksgiving, you know, client dinners, taking people out to the holiday parties, etc. I've advised my patients not to stop. If you're on an appropriate dosage of mounjaro or ozempic, you shouldn't have completely no hunger. So my I told my patients, maybe go down on the dosage a little bit if you really feel you have absolutely no appetite, but there's no reason to stop the train before it gets to the station. Rachel. So most of my patients have stayed on Wegovy. Ozempic mounjaro. And they're losing weight during the holidays. And I think that's really important. You don't want to gain a lot of weight during the holidays. And if you do, let's say you're not on these medications. Let's say you're gaining a lot of weight just because you indulge for a couple of weeks. That could mean that you're insulin resistant. And when insulin doesn't work well, you can't take that weight off. And that's something that really has to be looked at.
So does can Ozempic lead to this insulin resistance or is this insulin?
Insulin resistance treats so ozempic and mounjaro and wegovy and the new ones that found they treat insulin resistance, which is why they're also approved for diabetes. So when you're on these medications we're really treating that. But for the people that are not on it, let's say that the average viewer out there that's watching and they say, oh my gosh, I think I've gained like 10 pounds this season. I'm just saying it's something to think about. You could be insulin resistant.
Oh that's interesting. Well, it's a very interesting debate on whether people should be on these drugs or not and whether they're learning to eat healthy without it. Right.
Rachel, I think that my patients are because when your appetite is zoned down and your insulin is working better, you know, these drugs, especially mounjaro, um, it affects two appetite receptor systems in the brain and the stomach, and you really start craving, after a while, healthier foods. It's also an anti-aging treatment, Rachel, believe it or not, because when you're stabilizing insulin, which is a hormone that doesn't work as well as we get older, you know, not only are you able to burn fat, which is what insulin does, you can exercise more efficiently. You're also building bone and muscle. And when we're young, we're burning fat. And what else are we doing building muscle and bone. So there are a lot of very positive effects. No one is saying that lifestyle is not important, but so many of the patients that come to see me and my New York City practice have really they know how to eat, and they just noticed a real change in their body. When they become insulin resistant, the weight may not go up that much, but they just notice that they're putting weight on in strange places. Yeah, and we put them on a special body composition scale. We see that their body fat is really very high for their weight.
    Yeah.
All right. Well this is really something that has to be looked at.
Yeah we do. And I think there's still some questions out there. I know people who have been on it who said they've lost a lot of muscle. Um, along with.

UGH! This host is so annoying. I didn't realize this was Rachel from Real World. She was annoying back then and still super annoying rn. She kept trying to cut the doctor off from talking bc she doesn't agree with anyone taking this drug.
