Im a freshman tenor sax player in high school and i don't know as much about music like all of you guys but that was an excellent performance. I'm playing this sonata for my solo at the end of the year and I just started working on this piece. Thanks for giving me a sneak peek at what it can hopefully sound like.
yeah, same i picked this piece up about a month ago, and am "trying" to play it for the New Englands festival. Most of it is no problem, but the last Mvmnt. is a killer im going to have to slow it down
I really enjoy listening to this performance. Critically speaking, he has near-perfect intonation (minus some high-end notes such as E's that are a bit sharp). Tone is very rich as dark. My only complaint is that he tends to get very brash and aggressive with some attacks. This sometimes causes him to lose control such as at 2:36 and 5:40 - 5:45. As for the embellishments, I have mixed feelings. Some are very nice, and some are very distracting and inappropriate (4:11 ???).
Hmmmmmmm, He may be good with the added improvs, but his playing is not a patch on the original Rascher version I still have on Vinyl. The man is still the master. Might see if I can work out how to add a photo of the sleeve notes and cover and upload the track on here.
@XdarkdomainX there's no such thing as a totonic scale. maybe you meant octatonic scale, which would mean a diminished or augmented scale, neither of which is what he played.
Wonderful!
Amazing intonation and tone
OMG!!! I love it :)
i love his ornaments!!
Nice Eccles, Dr. Gwozdz. I love the 3rd mvt.

So glad I found this, "Sonata" will be my next piece and it definitely sounds great!
FYI, embellishments are standard performance practice of music from the Baroque period.
Oh goodness, I played this almost 4 years ago now at my NYSSMA solo. This brings back so many memories :)
i know what you mean, you have to breathe somewhere and then once you breathe its really hard to come back in smoothly so fast
thinking about using this as my college audition piece :[I]
Conner Byrd Did you end up using it?
Yea did you
yeah, same

Fast Fingers and Tounge ... WOW!
Amazing! BTW anyone know how to get the extra embellishments and whatnot that he is playing in this video (and Rascher recorded)?
@zachindie Maybe he meant diatonic, as it certainly wasn't chromatic.
im pretty sure its lvl 5 but i could be mistaken,,,

@scotydogd LOL! Dr. Gwozdz told me about that story in my lesson. I laughed so hard when he told me that.
not improv just a totonic scale done at a fast tempo if u listen carefully
the second movement was a lilttle jumpy and too loud he overblew it, alot. lol but good otherwise
I just turned 15 Freshman in high school and I have to play movements I, II, and IV for solo. lmao
