1:00 This one is from Jason AK Mitchell, and the question is "How do you get started in international SEO? "I want to start getting my content in the hands "of Germany, India, China, Brazil, Japan, "and other Spanish-speaking countries. "Of course I want global expansion "but what are the practices or resources to get started?"
2:30 I've done a lot of international SEO, and I've made a lot of mistakes. The first thing you need to keep in mind is yes, and there are people all around the world. The market's much bigger than the English market or the United States, the United Kingdom. I love the U.S., like all the countries, but in general, when you think about global expansion, you have to understand where your clients are coming from really.
3:00 Take your time. Go after the regions that you know there's going to be money, and there's going to be customers. And the reason I say this isn't to talk poorly on any of the countries out there, right. I spent well into the million-plus dollar mark in global expansion. We have a huge team in Brazil. We have a team in Germany. We have a team for all the Spanish-speaking countries, right. From Spain to Mexico, to Uruguay, to Peru, wherever it may be, right that speaks Spanish.
A lot of people forget that you have to translate your content manually. If you take a tool like Google translate, and someone comes to your website, and you translate it into German and Mandarin and all these languages, what do you think's going to happen with the auto-translation?

Exactly. Because it's not that great.
4:30 You want to make sure that when you're leveraging translations, use hreflang to tell Google what that content is relevant for. And you'll want to upload it on your site using subdomains. I know on neilpatel.com I use subdirectories. You're better off, and it's easier to get rank, cause if you use subdomains, such as DE.neilpatel.com, I, on the other hand, use neilpatel.com/DE. I would have done better if I'd did DE.neilpatel.com from all the tests we ran. And then you have to start building press within that region.
5:00 You have to start building backlinks. You have to get social shares. So you could end up boosting posts on Facebook to the audience. But it's not easy. As you can see, all these things cost money. So unless you know that these regions can produce income for you, because you're already starting to get customers from these regions, and the majority do their Google searches in languages that aren't in English, you can consider expanding. But keep in mind, it's a very expensive endeavor.
Would you recommend maybe testing the waters with pay per click in those regions to see if it's even worth their while? Before going into it?
5:30 That's a smart idea. If you're unsure, test out pay per click. You can even do targeting on Facebook and do ads within that region. If you don't know how to run Google AdWords ads, and by testing that out, you can quickly see if you're going to be able to collect leads and sales from that. But when you're testing the pay per click campaigns or Facebook ads, you want to make sure you translate your landing page.
6:00 In general, a lot of people who are looking to expand internationally, they haven't even dominated or done that well within the region they're in. So, before you expand internationally, try to dominate the region you're already in and then expand from there.

Haha. Thanks a lot for your great questions, Jason! Buying websites is a way to jumpstart but I would focus on expanding your own website into new regions first.

Talking about the end point, I focus on the the first 10 miles before the next 10 miles as the customers local to me help keep overheads down. This then helps with your margins and ensure you are known to more people local to your business.

Hey Neil, you said that you would have used subdomains over sub folders. There’s actually a lot of different views on this. Are you able to share a link or more detail on the specific tests you did that validates subdomain over a subfolder approach for international seo?
It's just a personal preference, honestly! I just think both work but I like the navigation aspect better for the subdomains.

Hi Neil. Great advises! I see there are plenty of comments already and not sure if you'll actually see my question here, but worth a shot anyways. How do you suggest to solve the "homepage problem" on an international site? Should it show a default language, or maybe redirect (please elaborate 301 or 302?) the user to his preferred language of choice, or maybe let the user choose the language on homepage(not my preference) or maybe anything else?
You can geo-direct people to the version of the language where they are. That is what I do with my site. If you are in Brazil and you go to neilpatel.com, you will be redirected to neilpatel.com/br

You should only publish your article in one place. Focus on creating longer articles as well.
Sir, what about the content. Can we write the same content in different languages without any change of our content write as it is only change for languages. Does Google understand the content is same but the languages is different?
Yes, that is fine.
My goal is to go straight to the English speaking audiences and then expand from there to Spanish etc., just because the Eastern European market, although growing, is not that well developed yet.
That is all the more reason to focus on Eastern Europe now so you can dominate the marketplace as it grows.

I have one question for you, how to promote an indian based carpet industry's facebook page in Germany for branding and lead generation.
Believe me I created a campaign to promote the Company in the Frankfurt city, but the result was worst because my FB page didn't get any likes or response from the targeted city, but got the maximum like from india, although my target location was Germany.
Could you please tell me why this happened?

You should optimize the page for a valentines keyword and run ads targeted on people who are in relationships :)

Hi Neil. Is there a way to rank your landing pages in Google search instead of PPC? I have been trying to look for than info online and nobody touch it. The reason I am asking you is because I am on the process of building a site and would like to rank some keywords with internal pages taking advantage of low competition. Again, any way to rank in google search, not Adwords, a landing page? Can an internal page be name, be equal to a landing page? Thanks in advance, Manny.
What makes ranking a landing page difficult is that landing pages don't typically have a lot of written content on them. It is possible, but it is much more difficult because of this.

Typically landing pages aren't for ranking on Google but for driving traffic with PPC and social. Consider focusing on ranking your blog posts and site pages :)

Hi Neil, love the videos. I had a quick question. If I get a backlink from a webpage already ranking in Google for my target keyword. Does that link have more value in the eyes of Google?
Depends on the authority of the site, where it is ranking, etc. There are quite a few factors. However, a relevant link is always better than one that isn't relevant.
Sir how can I do ASO accurately as google does not provide google play data and there are some websites which provide data but they are expensive.The only source which is available is keyword planner but it provide data of google search engine.

First of all when it comes to server location of the website, that doesn't make a difference to Google so you can have it in any part of the world as long as latency and response times are great. Secondly, if you website is mainly targetting only Brazilian's for selling its products and services then it would be much better and more effective for you to go with a .br domain name as that would help you not only rank better in local search but also help your users understand that your a local company. But that being said, you can still use a .com domain and rank well on brazil Google SERPs too.

It will be harder for you to compete because you aren't there but if you are able to provide top-notch results then you might be able to get some work because of the difference in costs.

There could be a lot of different reasons for that. Try updating the content, meta, title, etc to see if that makes any difference.

Research the competition and the market in general. I don't have experience with that industry so I can't give you exact advice other than research competition, keywords, and talk to the people you will be targeting.

If you are targeting a certain market, say Brazil for example, you will want to build links from relevant Brazilian sites to your Brazilian site.

Research, study, test, test, test, test, repeat. It takes a lot of work, dedication, and persistence to become an SEO expert. It is very possible though. You just need to work really hard to get there ;)

Hey Tim, we derive around 95% traffic organically from google India. Domain is 5 years old. We cater to 5 or 6 different niches in our blog, you can say it is all in one kind of a blog. I am not sure about exact RVR.
