- This a complete recreation of the 1983 hit song Africa by Toto.
Everything you hear in this recording was made by ear, and produced by me in Cubase Pro 13.
The amazingly talented @ThomasLeypoldt performed all the vocals, while I focussed on the instrumental.

This was such a fun project to work on, and I can't thank Thomas enough, not just for his vocal abilities (which are only a fraction of his skills), but for the time and effort he put into recording his video parts and for being a nice person to work with. It was an absolute pleasure.
Regarding the instruments used this production...everything you hear is a VSTi with the exception of my Roland Digital piano which features later in the song.
The VST sounds used were mostly from ReFX Nexus and Steinberg's Retrologue 2. Although as usual, each part is a blend of multiple patches to achieve the sound I was looking for.

This is bloomin' brilliant! Recreating something like this from ear takes some serious talent, and Julian, you've nailed it! Vocals are brilliant too, and the layering is perfect.

Absolutely brilliant cover version! Julian, you never disappoint! The real travesty is you haven't hit a million followers from when I first discovered you. One of the most underrated channels on YT. I'm somewhat sad the Porcaro-style percussions were not included, but the vocal artist and the cat made up for it.
I happened to hear an alternate version of this on the radio a few minutes ago, and that version had a drum intro. Interesting how there are different versions of this song.

I now know, why I dig these covers. They bring back memories. Memories of a recent and not so recent past. Having met both of you makes this an even more touching experience. Fantastic production! What is your cat's name, Julian, and are they male or female?
'Charlie' is an old boy. He follows me everywhere... I'm definitely his favourite human as nobody else gets a look in. Whenever I'm in the studio he's usually under the desk by my feet.
@juliancroot I have an older cat, too. She doesn't follow me around - she is way too prissy for that. 😄 What does the phrase 'nobody gets a look in' mean? I haven't heard that before.
It means while other people would like some attention from him, they don't get any.

Did you use chorus on his vocal?
No. The lead vocal is double tracked, and the harmonies were all sung individually by Thomas.
I just used EQ, compression and reverb, and panned the harmonies around the lead vocal.

Thanks. I can't take much credit for the vocals though. Thomas is a very accomplished musician and knew exactly what to do. Credit where credit it due 🙂.
