  • When working on old computers I like to try to reduce power & waste heat wherever possible. I've normally just used an infrared thermometer (Testo 830-T2) to check & compare temperatures.
As I'm producing videos, I thought a thermal imager might give a better indication for the viewer rather than just a number. A quick look on Element14 showed several for $1000's ... a bit extravagant for a UA-cam channel earning about $30/month.
So on to Aliexpress where there were a multitude - quite bewildering. One key specification seemed to be the resolution. I settled on one with a (ahem) claimed 256x192 pixel resolution and the ability to record video.
This is the ToolTop ET692C with a recommended price (apparently) of around AU$670. However it was on sale for AU$245 which, after adding shipping & tax, became AU$271. It was delivered impressively fast from China to Port Macquarie - only five working days (including a day to get it up from Sydney to Port).

Overall, it seems to do exactly what I wanted it to do, so I'm happy with it. I wouldn't have paid over AU$300 for it as my needs can't really justify anything pricier.

That is pretty awesome. And yes, while not like super cheap, compared to the FLiR stuff, much more affordable. I'd like to have one for the bench as well as roaming around the house to spot any gaping heat/cooling loss spots.

Definitely a good move, and that is a great price Now you can check voltages, check temperatures, check the clock, check the CPU bus logic etc..., then check the fuse :)

That sounds like hard work ... "keep buying on ebay until you get a working one" sounds much easier! :)

It is nice experience to get seasick without even leaving the house, just by viewing a video. You may change your title to "restless engineer". Any time you touch something it is moving like over the screen like crazy. Maybe a constructive idea if you do such a video about something "Thermal" again. If you got more than one thermometer, measure the temperature by pointing one at the other. So you can clearly see a difference. Next, why do you use this camera only for one distance on your table? Don't you think it may be of interest how it may perform at maybe 3 and 10 meters? You could keep your video just as long, but make it less boring. Your waving the closed box with the camera around for minutes is not really giving any information.

    hi,
can you recommend it for home use, circuit board repair etc?

Definitely! I've been using it quite a bit on circuit boards - one type of fault is when there's a shorted component like a capacitor or IC - it'll glow red-hot and be easily visible against all of the other components.

      Maybe tax write-off to cover my UA-cam income ... ? 😇
I've been meaning to ask if you'd be interested in trying some of your magic on my CPC664?

Always wanted one of them but that is still a bit out of my price range.

I usually cheat and use PayPal's Pay-in-4 option, so about AU$70 a fortnight

Mine arrived today from Ali-Express - £119 UK. There was a sale on a few weeks back when I ordered this but can be bought cheaply if you keep an eye on the website.

I guess plated through holes added too much to the cost, or maybe their PCB factory couldn't give that option.
