- Ashtabula is a city in Ashtabula County, Ohio, United States, and the center of the Ashtabula Micropolitan Statistical Area (as defined by the United States Census Bureau in 2003). It is located at the mouth of the Ashtabula River on Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes, across from the province of Ontario, Canada and 53 miles (85 km) northeast of Cleveland. The name Ashtabula is derived from ashtepihəle, which means 'always enough fish to be shared around' in the Lenape language.
The city became an important destination on the Underground Railroad in the middle 19th century, as refugee slaves could take ships to Canada and freedom. Even in the free state of Ohio, they were at risk of being captured by slavecatchers. Beginning in the late 19th century, the city became a major coal port on Lake Erie at the mouth of the Ashtabula River northeast of Cleveland. Coal and iron were shipped here, the latter from the Mesabi Range in Minnesota. The city attracted immigrants from Finland, Sweden and Italy in the industrial period. Ashtabula hosts an annual Blessing of the Fleet Celebration, usually in late May or early June. As part of the celebration, a religious procession and prayer service is held at Ashtabula Harbor. The city was the site of the FinnFestUSA in 2007, a celebration of Finnish Americans.
As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 19,124, a decrease of 1,838 (8.8%). from the 20,962 residents recorded in the 2000 census. It has lost population due to a decline in industrial jobs.[6]

Jc penny is closed has been for a few months. The ship you pointed out in the rail yard is not abandoned it was probably waiting to get loaded or unloaded. Those docks are part of CSX.
Hi im looking for my uncle from Ashtabula haven't had any luck. His name is Ruben Carmona if anyone can help
I’ve been to Ashtabula many times and it’s so run down it’s sad, I wonder what happened to that town to cause it like that? Conneaut is starting to become a ghost town too.
Meth
I live in bula and meth destroyed it Horribly. And most of Conneaut.
Wow ,I had no idea
When almost all the chemical plants shut down/ got chased out, most of the jobs went with them. Before that, the city did a pretty good job of chasing most of the downtown business away with their “Arrowhead Mall” debacle.
At first I thought maybe you were from Ashtabula and so you did not know about that building is called the high-rise and that is where the old live
Thank you !! I’m curious about moving there
Are you nuts??? Don't do it!
God bless you Justin .. I subscribed . Could you go to the Lake rd area some day where all those cabins are? How about any malls in ashtabula?
That was cool. I should do that for areas I know well, go to just for others researching genealogy like me. Go Rome! 😂
I’m here 2 years later I’ve lived here for so long it’s terrible
i live 45 min south of YOUNGSTOWN, in BEAVER, PA___we go all over eastern Ohio ghosthunting with, different members of our paranormal group or groups____last summer we spent alot of time LISBON, OHIO ___ALSO HANOVERTON, OH at spread eagle tavern, its old and haunted, also the grove hill cemetery a few blocks from the SPREAD EAGLE, the SPREAD EAGLE IS A HOTEL AND HAS A FANCY EXPENSIVE RESTAURANT ____also went to Akron and CANAL FULTON, ohio
I wish you would have posted videos!
You don't need to travel far: the whole region is a ghost of a previously prosperous and orderly society -- now gone.
On rt 20 you started half way in Ashtabula township then only drive halfway into Ashtabula. You shoulda started at state Rd and gone to woodman ave
My god, I grew up here 1954-1969. This is heartbreaking. The two in-the-center-of-town public schools -- Chestnut Street K-8 and nearby Ashtabula High School -- are vacant lots now. The narration is almost comical, it's so earnestly bad. Bring 20 or 30 thousand Ukranians over here and settle them in this abandoned housing. They'll bring the place back to life.
Ashtabula has 5 superfund sites. The air is very polluted. Highest number of welfare recipients in the state. The government here created too many low income apartments.
Its a shame because the history is interesting.
Rte 11
Wherer
Funny JCpenny is gone 😂😂
Oh know
Dood moved to ohio 💀💀
This guy isn't even from the city. Doesn't even know the history and didn't show the good sides!
