Can you sound like Brian May on any guitar? That is today's question! We both have played in bands that cover Queen songs, and it's such an iconic guitar sound, but how to sound like Brian May without owning a Brian May Red Special is the question? They are cool guitars but you'd probably only own one if you play in a Queen Tribute band or if you are a superfan!
So we wanted to see how to make your guitar sound like Brian May using a Telecaster, an Ibanez RG, a Gordon Smith SG and a Fender Strat. Obviously the amp you go through and the pedals you choose will have a big factor on this. But by experimenting with the different pickup positions on each guitar, we had a lot of fun trying to get as close as we could to sounding like Brian May!
Having a treble booster is key to getting his sound, and make sure you put it first in your signal chain. Use some chorus, but just enough so you can hear it, don't over do it! Any overdrive that sounds more like a cranked up amp than a modern high gain distortion should do the trick, and we added a tape style delay but just a touch. We will list the gear below we used but there are so many options out there and you might already own some pedals that will do the job! You should be able to get the Brian May tone on a budget or something close at least!
