This is a beauty. It has been some time since I went out trolling. When I was younger I used to go out from the southern NC coast to fish for Kings, Spanish and yellowfin but haven’t done that in a while. This looks like a well made reel for trolling. I spent the day trying to resurrect a Shakespeare 2091 Sea Wonder reel. It looked good but turned out to be s disaster: bent bail not functional, bent axle shaft, and a stripped level wind screw connecting the oscillation arm to the main gear were the problems. Believe it or not I fixed the bail and even the axle shaft though if I can find one I’ll probably replace it. That level wind screw which I found in the bottom of the housing is a left threaded screw and evidently between stripping the screw and forcing that bent axle shaft someone really messed up the mechanism of that reel. I’m going to have to find another main gear assembly and level wind screw before it will function again. The seller agreed to pay for the parts if I can find them. What a pain but I learned a lot . I have a 2081 in mint condition. Loo0king at the Penn I believe that is the largest drag washer I’ve ever seen. I’m very impressed with the design of this reel. I love simplicity! Great video Dennis! (PS. If you know a good source for vintage Shakespeare parts I’d love to know it.)
I will keep a look out for those SKP parts. Some reels are destined for the parts been. Yours may be one - Stay well - Dennis
Thanks Dennis.

Thanks for taking the time to put out this video if it was my reel i would leave it up to you too do the job 👍🏿
Thanks Larry - A lot of folks fear the Lever Drag repair. It's a relatively simple concept once you get the courage to take it on. Best wishes - Dennis
Another really enjoyable video Dennis, thank you.
On a different note, got my first Covid shot today....."easy peasy, lemon squeezy" I have to say......if only servicing reels was as easy!! 🎣
Keep up the great work and stay safe.🎣
Glad to hear on the vaccine. Best wishes - Dennis
Great job
Thank you and thanks for watching - Dennis
I just got a Squall 60 second hand. Have you done a vid on it's service or should I use this one??
You can use this one. There is little difference except the size of the reel. Internally, they are very much the same and the procedures for servicing are the same. Thanks for asking - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle Thanks for the reply, Hey Dennis, what size rod would you put a 60ld on.
I guess it depends on what you are fishing for. I would likely go with a 6 1/2-7Ft medium or Medium heavy rod for that reel
great video as always. Have you or anyone ever run across a Penn Squall 30VS that makes a somewhat concerning noise when reeling in quickly? I'm curious if it doesn't just need a service but I cannot find a video addressing that specific reel.
Not sure of the noise you are describing, but I would guess it needs service. The squeaky wheel get the oil thing. That or a dry bearing(s) is likely - Dennis
Great video as always thanks for sharing.. Is it possible to do a service on the Poliscanski 2b Monitor please?
I have never seen or heard of that reel so I assume it is not available here. Can you send me a picture? I would like to learn more about it. Send the picture to my email 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com thank you - Dennisl
I usually just use a small piece of tape on the line, simple yet effective.
That works! Thanks for watching - Dennis
I agree Michael....it REALLY works....and you can even take it of afterwards lol. 🤪🎣
Thanks. I have a penn fathom 25nld 2 speed. Can i grease the drag washer or no?
If you do, just put a light coat on it and wipe it dry with a paper towel to leave just a skim coat on it
Dennis,
On this Squall 40ld how can I tell what the drag is set to in lb. I see people mentioning they set theirs to something as specific as 10.5lb and I am unclear on how they come to that. Sorry if this is a silly question but I am a novice nowadays. Thanks
I am not sure. There are some marks on the sister reel, the fathom along the inner rim 1,2,3 it is possible that each of those is the indication of max storage stages. Check to see if you have those on your reel - Dennis
Hello Dennis, I have a Penn Squall 40LD, my lever drag won’t work properly. Any suggestions?
If it is not a broken part internally, then the most likely that the preset adjuster is out of sync and needs to be reset
I own this reel and as I increase the drag it binds up to where I cannot turn the handle. Any ideas before I open it up? Only fished 6 times!
Sounds like a weak spring or something wrong in the drag stack. If that isn't it, then it is likely a. broken part
@@2ndChanceTackle OK, I’ll look for those first.
Is it ok to combine two old penn reels together
Yes - parts are interchangeable - Dennis
Cuz I combined the 85 with the 285
