Frequency separation to create the diffuse would allow you more freedom in detail recreation. Also, you don't need to use color overlay when it's a text object, just change the text color. Further, to achieve a better blend use the "blending options" at the top of layer styles instead of "random blend mode".
I'm going to have to try this! I'm not too good at Photoshop, but I'm trying to use a mockup of a piece of fabric that is folded, and use photos I have made of MY fabric to make it looks like it's on the bolt. Any help or pointers would be most appreciated!
