Teenage singer/ songwriter Steven Georgiou began his career playing in front of tiny audiences in outlying pubs and coffee shops in London. Georgiou had big dreams about making it in the music business.
He came to the conclusion that his last name would be difficult to pronounce and spell, especially if he was to achieve success in America, so he decided to change his stage name to Cat Stevens, because his girlfriend at the time said that he had the eyes of a cat, and he heard Americans liked felines
In ’66, Cat was only 18 years old when he attracted the attention of manager/ producer Mike Hurst.Hurst negotiated a record deal for the young singer, and Stevens released a string of hit singles in the UK off his debut album, starting with “I Love My Dog” in the fall of ’66, followed by the Top 10 title track “Matthew and Son” which featured Led Zepplin’s John Paul Jones on bass guitar.
At 19, the teen sensation that schoolyard bullies used to derisively call “the artist boy” and beat up on, was poised for pop stardom.
But, Cat Stevens became overwhelmed by his rising celebrity, in addition to the daunting stress of writing & recording deadlines, touring, and making public appearances.
His fame turned to frustration in the fall of ‘68 when his 2nd album flopped in the fall of ’68, and he physically collapsed from the mushrooming pressure.Stevens was taken to a hospital for emergency care, where upon detailed examination, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and a collapsed lung.
Upon delivering the traumatic news, Cat’s doctor gave him even worse intel to process when he was given the prognosis that he may only have a few week to live. While hospitalized, Stevens was often left alone in a plain, isolated room, essentially waiting to die. Miraculously, Stevens defied the odds, and began a slow recovery.
After he was finally cleared to leave the hospital, he was put on strict bedrest for more than a year, virtually disappearing from the British pop music scene that once looked so promising for young Cat.
During his convalescence, in a feeble physical state, his soul was enlightened with a fountain of inspiration, and he began writing song after song, eventually composing enough material to fill two albums.
Cat Stevens fully recovered and began his career resurgence.
His first move was getting out of his contract with Deram Records, and partnered with former Yardbirds bassist Paul Samwell-Smith to create a stripped-down sound, in contrast to his first two albums.
This is one of the best, if not the best, break down of Cat Stevens I've watched. He is one of my all time favorites and one of two collections that I want to collect the complete discography. 'Miles from Nowhere' reminds me of laying in bed during a quiet evening at home, filled with nostalgia. My father introduced me to 'Tea for the Tillerman' on vinyl. Thank you dad!
Your Dad is a smart man.
My dad listened to it every night when he got home from work when I was in high school. Cat Stevens was his favorite musician. Dad passed away when he was only 47 and now, 35 years later whenever I hear a Cat Stevens song, I’m reduced to tears. Coincidentally, dad’s favorite film was “Harold and Maude” with its soundtrack entirely by Stevens.
I discovered Cat Stevens as an 18 year old, holidaying in France, waiting to find out if I had been awarded a place at University.
Every time I listen to his songs, I am instantly taken back to simpler times - Chasing girls, discovering music, pushing boundaries like I was the first person to feel this way.
30 years later, the first few notes of any Cat Stevens track always knocks the air out of my lungs and takes me instantly back to those simpler, happy days.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Yusuf in 2007 when he visited Barbados. He was a very pleasant man and it's good to hear his story here once again. I will always remember something he shared with me: If you can't give anything, give a smile.
Father and son to me is one of his greatest songs. It is masterful in the way it is written and performed
I was 18 and brawling with my dad when this song came out. He had left school at 12 and I was completing my Higher School Certificate at 18 before going to uni. He suffered from PTSD from WW2 and it really came out when he drank. Too many memories.
The soundtrack of my life-- Cat/Yusuf is the greatest singer-songwriter of our time-and quite possibly of all time.
Why is no one mentioning Peace Train? That song is so beautiful in its idealized thoughts of world peace. And the background singing is phenomenal and so moving. I tear up every time I hear it. And to think that when he changed his name and converted his religion that people wanted to ban his music! Talk about not listening to his messages. Wow! Oh, and Moon Shadow I would sing to my kids every morning when I got them out of bed when they were just little guys.
My dad bought Tea For The Tillerman on 8 track back in '71, definitely a soundtrack to my youth. Still, one of the best albums ever released
The memories of Tea For The Tillerman and Teaser And The Firecat, the music, the lyrics, the quintessentially 1970s singer-songwriter aesthetic, the iconic album artwork, and the overall context within my life, and of those times, will forever be etched in my being. Right up there with Harry Chapin, James Taylor, Jim Croce, Gordon Lightfoot, Don McLean, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Phoebe Snow, Janis Ian, and Joan Baez of the 70s (Diamonds And Rust), etc.
Have we all listened to his work from 1966 to 1968. Really enjoyable songs like here comes my baby, the first cut is the deepest, Matthew and son, I love my dog. Really really fun pop
Cat Stevens is why I took voice lessons, and then guitar lessons too. At my mothers funeral I did 'Father and Son' for my father. I play/sing 'Wild World' for my personal loss of a beautiful woman going back to a dysfunctional relationship. "It's hard to get by on just a smile girl". Indeed.
Tea for the tillerman always reminds me of my childhood. It is one of the best album ever.
Cat Stevens has certainly chartered his own course and I really admire that. He recognises the spiritual path in life is more important than the egoic life that most people live. Respect.

I memorized the lyrics to Moon Shadow when I was a kid. Cat Stevens is one of my favorites. Great song writer.
Age 5 til 10 in my household, replete with hippie mother and step father, Cat Stevens was everything. The music filled our Chicago apartment every weekend. His face was the the wallpaper in an alcove behind our banquet dining table. I love him.
Saw him in 75,of course the large audience 15,000 or so were dedicated fans, totally surprised when he just stopped in the middle of a song and said" Well enough of this, let's do something else!" Ripped into" Mustang Sally" and a few other upbeat numbers! Definitely got our attention as we didn't know what to expect afterwards! Great concert! Thanks for your channel!
Incredible artist wrote so many classic songs that actually sound better as time goes by. Wild World, Father and Son, Morning has Broken, Sun C79 on and on, possibly one of the most underrated artists of all time!
Cat stevens music has been such a huge part of my life and family. My mom loved cat stevens and would always play it real loud while she cleaned the house. My dad would play it at night when my uncles were over. I was born in 1973 and some of my earliest memories have a cat stevens soundtrack. When I was 17 i met the girl who moved in across the street and she quickly became my girlfriend. She had a love for cat stevens and John Lennon. Well 30 years later and 25 years of marriage later. We have four children and we still share our love for cat stevens music. Small town America is the greatest place to grow up!!
Classic albums and the film "Harold and Maude" wouldn't be the same without Cat's music.

Tea for the Tillerman is such a great album. I still listen to it today. It was one of the reasons I became a guitar player.
I was listening to Cat Stevens while I was preparing for the entrance exam at the university... Every day I was listening to Cat Stevens because just his music kept me calm :) before that I was listening to heavy metal and 80s glam metal when I was in high school :)
His voice is so unique.
Myself and my girlfriends went to his concert in Greenwich Village in 1972. We were invited “backstage” to hang out with the band. We just partied with them, real fun gentlemen actually. It was quite a memory in my life. Those days were such filled with wonderful experiences, we were naive and trusting. Thanks for all this history and fleshing out his creative intentions.

I grew up with his music being a teenager during his foray of these early albums and the history that you have covered. Paul, the producer and a member of the Yardbirds too (history) what a contribution as well. I can’t wait for round two-a whole mother nother story.. Catch Bull at Four,Foreigner,Buddha and the Chocolate Box,Izitso.... The great unfolding of fame and Cats ultimate Providence.
I know this is just a promotional video, but for clarity's sake, Cat Stevens' two albums that established him as a major star all over the western rock world were T.f.t.T., covered here, and Teaser and the Firecat, released a year later in 1971, not Mona Bone Jakon, which is not a major album of his. Besides the two I cite, his other great albums are Catch Bull at Four (1972) and Buddah and the Chocolate Box (1974).
The patches make the goodbye harder still...speaking about my generations favorite piece of clothing...blue jeans with sown on patches make parting that much more difficult. Brilliant poetry. If you didn’t mention Tea for the Tilleman in conversation you just weren’t hip...tenth graders are very judge mental. This is one special artist and I still love his work.

Cat Stevens is imo one of the greatest song writers in modern music history. He's up there with Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, but never gets mentioned as much of them.

TFTTMis such a great album. I stole it from my dad when I was 14 and knew it forward and back. At 17 years old I hitch hiked across Idaho, Oregon and Nevada (late 70”s when you could). I’d sing all of these songs. On the Road to Find out, Miles From Nowhere etc became so real to me. Great memories from a great album.

As a kid during the 80s, I ended up listening to "Tea for the Tillerman" a lot as my father had this in his collection. It definitely was not the kind of music I'd admit to my peers that I loved, but I did enjoy it.
I love Cat Stevens but that line from that song is comedy gold. 5:43. It sounds like someone who's gonna be anything but a pop star. I just can't stop playing it and laughing my head off.
I’ve always been a bigger fan of Teaser and the Firecat. For me, that was where Cat really let loose and wrote his best music.

Thanks for posting this. I was born in 1969, a year before Tea for Tillerman was released. My parents had the album and I wore it out as a young boy, playing it constantly. I have spent the last few years studying music theory and sing writing and released my first single yesterday, Down To My Soul, on my UA-cam Channel. Cat Stevens was a huge influence

I was watching "Harrold and Maud. A new movie. Cat did the music for the movie. I asked my first love to marry me when "where do the children play" was playing. I didn't get the girl. But 50 years later, I still chat with her.

The great director Hal Ashby and Cat Stevens were pitching to the studio a counter culture musical called "Harold and Maude." They weren't kidding. A couple of years back there's Jewish Art Garfunkle inducting Islamic Cat Stevens into the RRHOF. WTF!? One thing all those 70's singer songwriters had in common was a very distinctive singing voice. Unmistakable. Cat Stevens wrote "The First Cut Is the Deepest." Nough said? "Father and Son," "Peace Train": "Now I've been crying lately, thinking about the world as it is, why must we go on hating, why can't we live and let live."
Justify? Lou Pearlman? Idol worship? WTF are you trying to say?
What are you, dense? Why do you think I brought up Art Garfunkle? A Jew inducting an Islamic extremist into the RRHOF? I know what Garfunkle would say, "I was building bridges with the opposition." One cannot help but draw comparisons between *Cat Stevens* and *Kerry Livgren of the band Kansas* as the similarities are many!
◾ *Cat Stevens* was born in *1948,* and *Kerry Livgren* was born in *1949* ...just a year apart in age.
◾ Both men had tremendously successful music careers which began in the *60s,* and peaked in the *70s.*
◾ *Cat Stevens* is a *_singer-songwriter_* who wrote his own songs.
◾ *Kerry Livgren* was the *_guitarist and songwriter_* of the legendary group *Kansas,* who had written their biggest hits including *_Carry On Wayward Son, and Dust In The Wind._*
◾ Both men were experiencing existential crises in their lives and were each on spiritual journeys in search of truth.
◾ *Cat Stevens* had looked into *_Buddhism, Zen, I Ching, numerology, tarot cards, and astrology_* before eventually walking away from his successful music career to become a *Muslim* in 1977. In *1979,* he had his final secular performance on the 22nd of November in Wembley Stadium to benefit UNICEF's International Year of the Child.
◾ In like manner, *Kerry Livgren* had tried out virtually *_every major eastern religion,_* and even some lesser known ones before converting to *Christianity* in *1979.* In 1980, Kerry recorded *_the incredible_* album, *SEEDS OF CHANGE.* It would be his first *_Christian album,_* with the song's lyrics reflecting a Christian worldview...and he invited a number of his friends to perform his songs on the album, with such *luminaries* as...
*Ronnie James Dio, as well as members of LeRoux, Jethro Tull, Ambrosia, and Atlanta Rhythm Section.*
