How to make a 1/6 scale Strv M/39 - step by step

- The stridsvagn (tank) M/39 was an updated version of the L60, made by Landsverk. It was delivered to the Swedish armed forces in 1939. The L60 was built in 3 versions, the M/38, M/39 and M/40 but the specification and design was almost identical - a welded hull, torsion bar suspension and a 37mm gun.
Since Sweden did not take active part in the Second world war, the M/39 never saw action. However, the L60 was sold to Hungary and produced on license under the name Toldi. The Toldi was used alongside german forces during the invasion on the Soviet union and operation Barbarossa.
This model is a scratch built 1/6 scale model made by plywood, plastic and aluminium. The tracks, drive wheels, road wheels, idler wheel, suspension arms, details and turret are all 3D-printed in PLA+. The printer used is a FlashForge Finder, except for printing the turret, that is too big for the Finder. The propulsion consists of two 12V screw drivers, connected to the drive shafts via two bicycle chains and two belts. The drive shafts consists of M12 screws.
Haters say it’s sped up, *but in reality he’s just a great Soviet worker*
😆
In a world full of 1/6 scale Tigers, Leopards and Shermans, how refreshing it is to see this interesting subject being modelled so painstakingly.
Great work - and congratulations on your video production values, too : )
Del350K4 Thank you for the kind words!
The straps to hold the pickaxe and shovel... Brilliant. Love it. Beautiful job. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! The material is called Papfab, and is some sort of thin fake leather.
Love the stop motion animation at the beginning
Thank you! Tedious, but fun!
It’s a perfect-made stop motion
This is absolutely mind blowing! The level of craftsmanship and detail are off the charts. Every little part made by hand right down to the tiniest detail. The time and patience that this would take is just unbelievable. Outstanding work!!!
Thanks a lot! 🙏🙏🙏
The master of Tank build is back... Brilliant job !
Haha, thanks, mate! 😁

I love the mix of building material you use in all of your builds. Being able to use quality plywood to build as much as possible is a great plus. I love all the wire handles, buckles and clasps you so effortlessly create from scratch. Your videos are detailed and entertaining, thank you for sharing your hard work with everyone.
Thanks a lot for those kind words, much appreciated. 🙏🙏🙏
Insane craftmanship! That thing must be heavy though. A total beast!
Thank you! 🙏 It clocks in at 19 kg, so at least it's manageable. 🙂
Im blown away! I've built large scale models for years and im very impressed. Using a combination of 3D printing, wood and metal work is refreshing to see. I would say you'd have a good market if you ever decide to sell plans or files etc. Id buy!
Thanks a lot for watching! Yeah, I really like the combination of techniques, it lets you model the fun parts by hand. 😊
Astonishing, demanding task accomplished congrats. Never imagined it can be done in that way. Piece of art truly.
Thanks a lot for watching and for the kind words!
Now this impresses me. Great build. We can learn a lot from each others craftsmanship.
Man, I can't stop watching your tank builds. This is beautifull work!
Thank you so much!
I just kept being more and more amazed
🙏🙏🙏
love the fact you are using Baltic birch ply on this thing.. and that opening music transition was epic.
Haha, thank you! Love to work with birch plywood. 👍
I have never seen such amazing thing ! Making everything by hand like you did is absolutely incredible.
Bravo monsieur !
Thank you very much! That's how it goes when funds are limited but you really want a 1/6 scale tank 😁
WOW! Amazing build! I love that you used pretty much everything in the shop possible to make it too! My hat is off to you, very impressive!
Thank you! 🙏
Super super cool.
I imagine the satisfaction when you started seeing it painted
Thanks! Yes, it was quite nice when it came together. 😊
The tank prototype is not my cup of tea but I am seriously impressed with you build quality and attention to detail. Very well done, respect.
Thank you for the kind words! The M/39 is not a prototype, though. 🤔
@@builtbyWikander What I meant by "prototype" is the original type of tank your model is based on.
Simply… amazing!! A definite talent for building the majority of this model from scratch.
Thank you!
Simply WOW!! Your attention to detail is truly outstanding. You have created a mechanical MASTERPIECE!! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much! 🙏🙏🙏
Awe inspiring, magnificent skills.
The results are unbelievable.
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you!
I am absolutely amazed ! You are my new hero. Incredible skills my hat is off to you sir! Looking forward to more videos.
Wow, thanks for the kind words, mate! 🙏 More videos is on the way. 😊
Ultra well!!! Fine music too

Very, very well done! Beautiful model! ❤️
Thanks a lot! 🙌🙌🙌
Stunning 😮
🙏 Thanks a lot!
Ja Ja wieder ein Schmuck Stück SUUUUPER !!!!! 👍👍👍 und die Gürtel unglaublich 😮😮😮👍👍👍
All kind of material and building technic came together in talented hands. Really enjoyable to watch also instructive. Thank you for your efforts.
Awesome, man, thank you for the kind words! 🙏🙏🙏
Outstanding work and very interesting. Thanks for sharing
Thank you and thanks for watching!
You Sir, are a genius! Perfect work and amazing video. Thanks.
Wow, thanks a lot, that's very kind of you! 🙏🙏🙏
So much detail
🙏🙏🙏
You are not only an engineer but also an artist. Great work man
Thanks! 🙏
Unbelievable what can be done now with a 3D printer... but you have to be a genius to figure all this out and execute it..
I would change the music to period correct German marching music or Glenn Miller, etc ... well done!!
Haha, thank you. 😊
@@builtbyWikander wish i could do this.. i have so many tanks and other cool stuff i want to make..i can do all the fabricating as im a airplane mechanic and car restorer...., but im an old guy and not computer savay, so trying to use a 3D printer to make all the parts seems impossible for me....:(
I'm just learning to build rc..thanks for the knowledge. Great work
Awesome, good luck with your build!
Awesome work, one of the few videos I watched all the way through. It’s time to binge watch!
Can’t wait for the next!
That's the finest complement one can get, thanks a lot! 🙏
Tack!
Madness at a different level 👌 👌👌👌
😁😁😁
This is WAYYY too underrated! I hope this video blows up one day!
Thank you!
Great work - and congratulations on your video production
Thank you!
Congratulations, genial. The Sweed tank is incomun but very welldone, that"s a real Diy.
Thank you! Yes, it's fun to make stuff that is a bit unusual. :)
This is some absolutely amazing engineering work you are doing, Wikander!!! I'm very impressed. If you wanted to work for movie modelmakeers and such this video might be a fine proof of your skills
Thank you! 🙏
speachless....... wonderfull
Erik with out a doubt your best work yet. Your use of simple tools to create something so amazing is truly masterclass. If you would ever consider sell your 3d printed files I would definitely be interested in purchasing. Best wishes from Ireland
Hey man, thank you for wtching, and for the kind words! As for the files, I will keep that in mind!
@@builtbyWikander hi im in england just getting in to this if you do sale the the 3 files let me no im will biy cheers keep up thr good work
Fantastic work!👏👏👏👍 from Indonesia 🇮🇩
Thank you! 🙏
@@builtbyWikander sama2 🙏😄
Riktigt coolt!
Upskattar detaljerna och använding av 3D skrivare.
Skoj, tack så mycket!
Så jäkla snyggt och detaljrikt, imponerande
Tack!
That's an excellent build! I love it! Just curious! What made you choose wood for the structure? Your obviously skilled with shaping/forming steel! Our maybe aluminum! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you! It's mostly because my workshop is dialed for wood-work, and the birch plywood is so compact, stiff and easy to work with. But I would sure love to make more stuff in metal.
i am crying . this m/39 is wonderfull
Haha, thank you! 😊🙏
amazing work!!! DAMN!!
Thank you! 🙏
Waitaminnit, you mean the gun doesn't fire real ammo? Just kidding. I didn't think this level of detail was possible. Amazing work on the 3D printer as well !
Haha, sorry, it does not. 😁 Thank you!
Awesome build!! Question, I scratched build a German Goliath Demolision Vehicle, the only set back is the tracks which I can't find anywhere! Scratch building them would be long and tedious. Should I use a 3D printer and which Model would be sufficient for the task? Thanks in advance!!
Thank you! That sounds like a very cool project, and 3D-printed tracks seems to be a good solution. I have only really experience with the Flashforge Finder, so hard to advise you there, but if you are new to 3D-printing, and don't want to limit your materials to PLA or PETG, I would say an Adventure 4 or a printer that could be encapsulated and has a heated bed, like an Ender. Good luck!
@@builtbyWikander You are a Life Saver!! Thanks!!!
This looks amazing, I wish more companies saw the m40L and made kits for it, 1/72 scale just isn't enough and this beautiful 1/6 scale is out of my budget range haha
Hehe, thank you. But I agree, I had to use the Toldi 1/35 as reference. The Toldi is an L60, (M/38, 39, 40) license built by Hungary, so it's almost the same tank as the Swedish one. Thanks for watching!
Wonderful skills to build a really magnificent tank. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for watching! 🙏
Brilliant stuff & a joy in the building
Thanks, man!
Thank you!
Mr Wikander. It was such a pleasure and an inspiration to watch your movie. It all looked easy and well planned. Grattis! Man blir onekligen lite avis :-) (congratulations. I can't deny I get a bit jealous :-) )
Haha, thank you och tack så mycket! 🙏
Thats art right there💓
🙏🙏🙏
Outstanding!!! As a kid I used to dream about doing things like this.
Thank you! It's probably easier now than ever, hope you get some inspiration here! 😊
@@builtbyWikander The 3D printer is the game changer, the running gear is awesome and it works too. 1/6 scale is a good size too. Thanks for the time, effort and inspiration.
every time I see this video i end up being very very impressed by your skills
Thanks a lot! 🤘
Truly a work of art...
Thank you!
Great work!
Thanks a lot!
Very good job!
You work on materials and techs for great high production!!
I appreciate!!
Waiting for new fun prods!

Wow, thanks a lot, man, that's very kind of you! 🙏🙏🙏
Modelismo a escala épica. "Maestro Modelista": "Te saludo con todo respeto". Hermoso trabajo.
Thanks a lot for all the kind words and for watching! 🙏

Awesome....I myself...cannot hammer a nail straight...system engineer by trade. I stop at painting. I man has to know his limitations....Incredible work!
😆 Haha, thanks, man! 🙏
@@builtbyWikander I am a 1/35 th tread head...so I especially appreciate your work...
Amazing. I'm so envious of your talent.
Thanks a lot, man. 🙏🙏🙏
I like you video for you hardwork
Thank you, nice of you to wach them! 🙏
Outstanding! Would you someday do a video just about how you generate the drawings that are used to generate the files for 3-D printing the tracks? Do you scan smaller tracks and then scale them up, or start from scratch?
Hi! That was not a bad idea, i might just do that. I CAD them up from scratch, mostly using images and 2D-drawings as reference. Thanks for watching!
@@builtbyWikander That would be very cool. Also, it is amazing that you get such precise cuts without a table saw.
@@wboquist Sorry for late answer - The notification function is buggy. The trick is to make the cut a bit from the marked line, and then use the sander for the rest. Gives great result. Would never be able to get clean cuts otherwise!
@@builtbyWikander Just watched the video again from start to finish. I'm just as amazed this time as last. Your skills and your videography are fantastic. Thanks again for going to the trouble to make these videos and share them with the world.
Great piece of art. I wish I had more space in my garage. Scale 1:10 is maximum for me.
That's a good size scale too! Thanks for watching!
Hello, good job my friend, do you know where I can get the plans and the STL, thank you, you already have a new sub
Thank you for watching and the subscription! 🙏💪 The CAD files are made by me and not shared at the moment, but if you are looking for large scale 3d-printed tanks, have a look at Cults3D.com and Thingiverse. 😊
