My favorite vegetable is the potato. There are so many varieties; can be prepared in so many ways (both hot & cold); and can be stored fresh, frozen, or canned. ;-)
My favorite vegetable was the carrots my grandfather grew on his small plot in Maine. They were small and slightly sweet. (short growing season) I'd guess you'd call them organic today because he didn't use chemicals either to fertilize them or to kill weeds and bugs.
My favorite veggie? Oh my, there are so many! I love asparagus fixed all different ways, but creamed asparagus on toast is right up there. Corn on the cob, the fresher the better. Swiss chard steamed and served with a bacon/vinegar dressing. Fresh, raw garden peas. Tomatoes, tomatoes, TOMATOES! Brussels sprouts in butter sauce, as well as broccoli and cauliflower. Oh, John, this is like asking which of your videos are my favorites! Too many to say. :-)
At my mother's house when I was little, we had a little rhubarb... bush? I don't know what it would be considered, but my sister and I would eat some almost every day. Up until my former step father killed the plant because he was a dick
My favorite vegetable is Brussels sprouts, second is cauliflower. Growing up we were desperately poor. The vegetables we had were potatoes, wild greens, beans (yes, I know they're technically not vegetables) and sweet potatoes. We might occasionally have carrots when a neighbor had a surplus, but because my kid brother loved to eat carrots, I never had the opportunity to eat any of them.
I am also a fan of all of those things. But I do have a preference for canned corn vs. frozen, refuse to eat cooked carrots, and used to call broccoli stalks "trees" when I was little.
+Sam Hackenson Yep, it's a grain. I had a professor who would joke that Illinois (historically mostly grassland) replaced all their grass with more grass (corn and wheat).
Rhubarb.. Yes! it's a gift from the gods Ass-paragus.. not-so-much. (and before you say "You haven't had it cooked properly", I've had it boiled, broiled, roasted, sauteed, pureed, raw and all the above with cheese and/or some sort of pesto sauce.. it's not my thing)
each to their own. I'm rather fond, but I also like cauliflower, cabbage and sprouts. Not a fan of peas though (sugarsnap and mange tout as an exception)
Oklahoma, my home state. Where watermelons are vegetables, our biggest export are oil and country music, and our state song is both from a shitty musical and eternally trapped in 1907. ...Much like most of our politicians.
Vegetables are the stalks and leaves while fruits are seed pods left over from flowers. My favorite vegetable is spinach, it's packed full of good stuff and Popeye likes it.
Stewed Apples n Rubarb with Roast Pork, Peas, Pumpkin and Potatoes, my birthday dinner every year growing up unless going to a restaurant. 😊 Tinned Asparagus is my fav. If pizza is a veg, then I can tell Mum that 'Yes I am eating properly' without lying anymore Hazzarh! 😆😎
I love vegetables. As a matter of fact, most of the ones that were called gross in this video are favorites of mine. But these are my top picks: broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, and artichokes.
Rhubarb is awesome, got some growing outside right now, pies, cremes, juice. And broccoli, if I show my kids broccoli before dinner is done they will eat nothing else.
1 - It's also considered a veggie since it's from the same family as cucumbers and many gourds. (It's cute that people think all fruits and veggies have to be a fruit OR a veggie. It isn't that black and white). 34 - I bet asparagus grows faster. It can grow up to ten inches a day!
Yep! Berry Celery, riding our bikes til the street lights came on, then book it home! Ahh... the good old days! Thanx for the reminder, it's sooo juicy!❤
Madeline S. it's just our state is full of retired old people. they are not going to pay the taxes. also, we still have a great school system. also, it is more of a traditional thing instead of us being dumb. so shut up
Coolidge, good lord, no! Tapioca is added as a thickener, and obviously, sugar. And I personally prefer the strawberry-rhubarb pie, which adds, you guessed it, strawberries. But it contains no gelatin. And any lazy cost-saving jelly pie you've had is doing you a disservice.
My favorite vegetable is probably spinach and i cannot eat peas because it tastes so terrible for me that it gives me spasms. By the way, it may sound weird but i would love facts about you, John Green, i think you're a fascinating person, author (i love your books my favorite being The Fault in our stars) and i'd like to know more about you :)
Strawberry Rhubarb pie is one of the best pies ever, if you have not tried it John, I highly recommend it. It will change your mind about rhubarb. I spoon full of sugar helps the rhubarb go down. ;)
Another fact: 2:14 Too much Oxalic acid can hinder the absorption of Iron and Calcium, that's why it's not recommended to eat rhubarb when also drinking milk
Here's a question, if you cook/boil vegetables they lose some of that goodness thts good for you. My question is: Is that goodness now in the water? And if so, dont you think that water would be great to put in your garden, so all that goodness can be reused and also keeps your soil plentiful for new growing?
my birth father also told me that basically for the most part, if the seeds are inside it's a fruit, but if the seeds are on the outside it's a vegetable
Or you are genetically predisposed to not liking certain vegetables. The TAS2R38 gene determines whether or not you can taste certain bitter compounds. Many green veges and some not green taste extremely bitter to me. I have to hide them in saucy dishes. But asparagus and celery tend to overpower anything I throw at them.
Ya I think my husband has that same issue. He uses it an excuse to really over do it on less healthy options. Like cheeseburgers haha I think that the more you eat these types of vegetables then the more your tastes will change and you will start enjoying them. Thankfully my husband def eats more veggies now than he did even a few years ago.
You can't change your genetics. If something tastes horrifically bitter, it will forever. I loathe alcohol, and no amount of drinking it could change that.
+Patrick McCurry Ya I think it has more to do with his taste buds being overestimulated with loads of fat, sugar and salt. He can eat vegetables just fine. He just never wants to haha
John, I'm sorry you haven't had the pleasure of eating rhubarb that actually tastes good. The stuff they sell at stores often has big fat stems, tastes terrible fresh but it's good for cooking in pies. The best for eating fresh and believe me it's good, is very thin, maybe a quarter of an inch around and freshly picked. Now that is really tasty!
Says the Wikipedia: The original meaning of the word vegetable, still used in biology, was to describe all types of plant, as in the terms "vegetable kingdom" and "vegetable matter". So Oklahoma CAN have the watermelon as its official vegetable given that, in the original, broader sense, EVERY PLANT is a vegetable.
Rhubarb Crisp is awesome. Then again, cover anything in brown sugar, oats, and cinnamon (and butter), and it'll probably be good. (Except apples, which seriously apples? Why don't you taste better?)
+Twitchi if that's what you mean by cooking it and adding a little seasoning for flavor, then yes. In fact, 99% of the veggies you hated as a kid taste waaaay better when you roast or sauté them with garlic instead of boiling them. I mean Jesus it's not like you dump a gallon of pesto on it. Just a light brushing is fine.
My favorite vegetable is the potato. There are so many varieties; can be prepared in so many ways (both hot & cold); and can be stored fresh, frozen, or canned. ;-)
Broccoli Romanesco is one of my favorite vegetables because of the pattern. It is oddly mesmerizing.
My favorite vegetable was the carrots my grandfather grew on his small plot in Maine. They were small and slightly sweet. (short growing season) I'd guess you'd call them organic today because he didn't use chemicals either to fertilize them or to kill weeds and bugs.
And here I thought John would like any vegetable... as long as it was *Green.*
ba dum tsss
Hahaha :D
LOL
Master Therion lol
My favorite veggie? Oh my, there are so many! I love asparagus fixed all different ways, but creamed asparagus on toast is right up there. Corn on the cob, the fresher the better. I absolutely love your Office reference with #31. Beets. Bears. Battlestar Galactica :)
Why on earth was this one of my favorite episodes yet 😅😂?
Freshly picked, right out of the garden sweat peas are the best!
That fractal broccoli is flipping me out. That's what MC Escher would have eaten!
#4 I think the best way to maintain the nutrients is just to shop often so you don't have to store them often.
rhubarb's delicious! we used to grow it on our old farm, nothing as good as fresh rhubarb pie or cake with some ice cream or whip cream on top
At my mother's house when I was little, we had a little rhubarb... bush? I don't know what it would be considered, but my sister and I would eat some almost every day.
Up until my former step father killed the plant because he was a dick
Your step father sounds like a smart man.
The only thing better than fresh rhubarb pie with ice cream or whipped cream is any other fruit pie with ice cream or whipped cream.
Add enough sugar to anything and many Americans will eat it.
I can't post winkey face "colon semi colons" here? I typed it in my previous post.
best way to train your chopstick skills... Popcorn
Oklahoma is weird at least in Wisconsin the state vegetable is cheese
I'm sorry, but asparagus is awesome, and artichokes are delicious!
Agreed
Asparagus is great. Especially steamed.
+Memorandom grilled wrapped in Parma ham!
I love those, & rhubarb! :)
I agree on the asparagus, not a fan of artichokes though
Rhubarb and asparagus are my feature veggies for this week's meals. Yum!
Favorite veggies
Raw: Sugar snap peas
Cooked: Broccoli
My favorite vegetable is Brussels sprouts, second is cauliflower. Growing up we were desperately poor. The vegetables we had were potatoes, wild greens, beans (yes, I know they're technically not vegetables) and sweet potatoes. We might occasionally have carrots when a neighbor had a surplus, but because my kid brother loved to eat carrots, I never had the opportunity to eat any of them.
Love all veggies!
Rhubarb pie is awesome John, I don't know what you're talking about.
In the 19th and early 20th century it was known as 'pie plant'. So there ya go.
He spent some time in the south, I don't know how he isn't familiar with rhubarb pie.
Laura Minnick Who wouldn't eat pie made of plant matter?
In all reality though it doesn't even taste bad since it's so sour it tastes like a fruit.
Rhubarb jam is good too, Rhubarb is just good in general but I guess people like different things.
Broccoli, corn, and carrots all tie for my favorite vegetables. I wanna try that cool looking broccoli!
I am also a fan of all of those things. But I do have a preference for canned corn vs. frozen, refuse to eat cooked carrots, and used to call broccoli stalks "trees" when I was little.
Corn isn't a vegetable.
It's a grain, right? I always think of it as a vegetable.
+Sam Hackenson Yep, it's a grain. I had a professor who would joke that Illinois (historically mostly grassland) replaced all their grass with more grass (corn and wheat).
All of the vegetable slander! I am shocked. Asparagus and Rhubarb are wonderful!
Rhubarb.. Yes! it's a gift from the gods
Ass-paragus.. not-so-much.
Not a fan of peas though (sugarsnap and mange tout as an exception)
uncooked rhubarb stalks dipped in sugar is delicious! My favorite vegetables are cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussel sprouts.
Rhubarb, spinach, and asparagus are awesome!
Brussel Sprouts are my favorite! Asparagus is also delicious!!
I love cauliflower. It’s one of the few veggies I like. Try it warm with cheese and garlic salt and pepperoni...
Oklahoma, my home state. Where watermelons are vegetables, our biggest export are oil and country music, and our state song is both from a shitty musical and eternally trapped in 1907. ...Much like most of our politicians.
Your politicians are from musicals?
John Crafton Pretty much. They're usually the villains, or the out-of-touch old-timers.
+John Crafton as another Oklahoman, I confirm this
+Jeremy “Shadowbird712” Keil Fallon for prez
+jwin_the_pro Jimmy Fallon? Okay, fine. Mary Fallin? No. She's terrible.
Vegetables are the stalks and leaves while fruits are seed pods left over from flowers. My favorite vegetable is spinach, it's packed full of good stuff and Popeye likes it.
You've ever had canned spinach?
I'm strong to the finish cause I eats me spinach...
Not every vegetable is a stalk or leaf, such as onions, beans, and peas.
Nice Office reference with the beet fact there
Stewed Apples n Rubarb with Roast Pork, Peas, Pumpkin and Potatoes, my birthday dinner every year growing up unless going to a restaurant. 😊
Tinned Asparagus is my fav.
If pizza is a veg, then I can tell Mum that 'Yes I am eating properly' without lying anymore Hazzarh! 😆😎
Thanks John! My favorite vegetable is Okra! As long as it's battered and fried! Ha! Gotta love being from the south!
Isn't a watermelon a berry?
who gives a shit
berries are fruit
Currently studying for a botany exam. ^^ And yes watermelon is considered a berry. :P
also bananas.
Is Mayonnaise an instrument?
Going to have to play this one for mom in the morning. I feel like she might get a kick out of it.
What's wrong with rhubarb!? :O It's delicious in pastries and pies!
Or as a sauce together vanilla ice cream
Or in a garbage can.
Savage.
I tell myself that the amount of time I spend watching these videos is okay because it's educational... And then I realize I'm living a lie.
Freeze dried for the win!
My favourite vegetable is cocaine.
Asparagus and Rhubarb are both amazing. Strawberry Rhubarb Pie is god tier in the list of pies.
LOVE asparagus. Battered and deep-fried, in my fave Chinese restaurant, is AWESOME!
I love vegetables. As a matter of fact, most of the ones that were called gross in this video are favorites of mine. But these are my top picks: broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, and artichokes.
Strawberry Rhubarb Pie is probably the best pie. Period.
Brussel sprouts ❤
Me too
buscosexxo okey
I love vegetables way more than I like fruit. Some of my favorites are green beans, artichoke, broccoli, and peas.
I love broccoli. You can eat it with pretty much any meal.
I love rhubarb in pie. We used to grow a little and I ate bites of the leaves, but never got poisoning.
It can grow up to ten inches a day!
currently broccoli is my favourite vegetable, but brussel sprouts are making a surprisingly successful bid for top spot in my veggie yumminess chart
Carateeny seems more like a portmanteau, than a pun.
Stuffed chili peppers, or Chili rellenos are the best vegetable dish i can think of.
Also all vegetables are my favorites, but no rutabaga or ochre !
Wow- when I was a kid I would get rhubarb from the stream and eat the stem, chewing on it as I rode my bike around the neighborhood. Very often.
Yep! Berry Celery, riding our bikes til the street lights came on, then book it home! Ahh... the good old days! Thanx for the reminder, it's sooo juicy!❤
Just asking, but did your stream have crawdads? 😁
I think the rind of a watermelon is extremely like a cucumber which is what they are often used in place of when pickling
I see that puppy cat!!!!
Maybe if they didn't cut school funding in Oklahoma, they'd realize that watermelon is a fruit.
Madeline S. it's just our state is full of retired old people. they are not going to pay the taxes. also, we still have a great school system. also, it is more of a traditional thing instead of us being dumb. so shut up
We know that John has never had rhubarb pie. It's freaking amazing.
Isn't the filling mostly Jell-O, though? That seems like a cheat...
Coolidge, good lord, no! Tapioca is added as a thickener, and obviously, sugar. And I personally prefer the strawberry-rhubarb pie, which adds, you guessed it, strawberries. But it contains no gelatin. And any lazy cost-saving jelly pie you've had is doing you a disservice.
my favorite vegetables are the ones you find in wheel chairs. they are super good deep fried.
I thought John liked asparagus... we've even seen him cook it in a vlogbroithers video before.
He's also discussed it as part of his ideal meal. Probably just a gag
+Becca Moses He has writers for Mental Floss and he just reads the script. That's probably just Meredith's opinion.
You overlooked Phelps, NY
My favorite vegetable is probably spinach and i cannot eat peas because it tastes so terrible for me that it gives me spasms. A spoon*
That last fact though...wtf 😂
Rhubarb is delicious, John!
6:04..... 'The Office' reference...??
Vegetables are what food eats.
Another fact: 2:14
Too much Oxalic acid can hinder the absorption of Iron and Calcium, that's why it's not recommended to eat rhubarb when also drinking milk
Broccoli, but only when it's cooked. The taste is actually pretty good, and I prefer it when it's softer.
I still think rhubarb is berry flavored celery 😉 I like it!
The whole Kalamazoo celery thing would explain why they have a park called "Celery Flats."
Also explains why you find celery or related plants growing in Michigan at weird locations that otherwise don't make much sense.
I’ve gone by a sign saying “Celery Flats” a buttload of times since arriving in Kalamazoo 4 years ago and until now had *no* idea that it was a park.
rubarb is delicious! especially in pie
I adore asparagus!!! One of my favorite breakfasts is a skillet of asparagus, green onion, egg, mushroom and a dash of garlic.
Fun video! Thx. Except asparagus is good if you cook it right. Mmm
This is a video about vegetables. They keep you regular. They're real good for ya.
You left out Kent, WA! We were the lettuce capitol of the world in the 1920's!
THAT PIZZA HUT FACT IS MY #1 FAVORITE TRIVIA FACT.
sorry I get really passionate about trivia.
Here's a question, if you cook/boil vegetables they lose some of that goodness thts good for you. My question is: Is that goodness now in the water? And if so, dont you think that water would be great to put in your garden, so all that goodness can be reused and also keeps your soil plentiful for new growing?
Omg thank you for saying what Pizza Hut uses the kale for I would have been wondering that all day
christine favorito Kale pizza would be amazing.
my birth father also told me that basically for the most part, if the seeds are inside it's a fruit, but if the seeds are on the outside it's a vegetable
Ketchup is my favorite vegetable.
John, thank you for starting the video with a reminder that my state doesn't know the difference between fruit and vegetables.
Rhubarb pie is pretty god damned good. Of course, it also has cherries or strawberries in it, and like 2 cups of sugar, so that definitely helps.
The New Jersey State Vegetable is Kathleen Ann Quinlan
Office reference👌
Love me some asparagus!
Corn: Used in a lot of foods. Has many uses. It's just tasty.
In Spain we call these "Shishito peppers" "pimientos del Padrón" and they are considered a typical dish from Galicia.
If you don't like asparagus then you're preparing it incorrectly :)
I like all vegetables except for peas.
Or you are genetically predisposed to not liking certain vegetables. The TAS2R38 gene determines whether or not you can taste certain bitter compounds. That Super Mushroom was made of aluminum and filled with star candies.
When I was little, my mom got me to eat broccoli by having me pretend I was a giant eating trees

So Oklahoma CAN have the watermelon as its official vegetable given that, in the original, broader sense, EVERY PLANT is a vegetable.
Carrots are #1 in my book closely behind it is jicama.
Leafy spinach is a great healthier substitute for lettuce.
My favorite vegetable is the red bell pepper. And by the way, the word peperoni in Italian means bell peppers (it's plural).
I live in Oklahoma and had watermelon last night. Hell yeah
is john related to hank green from sci show?
You new here? They are brothers and also do a series (its own channel I think) called vlog brothers.
Hey John, what is your celery for these videos?
Lettuce know pea-se.
Rhubarb Crisp is awesome. Then again, cover anything in brown sugar, oats, and cinnamon (and butter), and it'll probably be good. (Except apples, which seriously apples? Why don't you taste better?)
Why do u call it a salon?
Carrots are my favorite veggies because they are pointy!
Clearly John has never has asparagus roasted with pesto and cheese
so what your saying is asparagus is lovely when you cover the taste with something else
It gets stuck in your teeth like crazy.
Then you cooked it too long
favorite vegetable now is Pizza. Thanks Obama! (Said unsarcastically)
