Hi, great job. Some years ago I painted my ex-mod 109 S3 LHD to mid-grey (=welsh grey), after considering limestone and light-green, which I mostly assiciate with the series - apart from bronce-green. I spent weeks and months with sanding the mil-paint, but not to bare metal. First layers are etch-primer, where I hit the ground, but normally filler paint. Again: sanding, sanding, ... I stopped, as there are areas left, which did not manage to get it smooth enough for a professionel paint job. I sprayed all the paint. The Wagner electric spray gun was not that bad. Some parts I sprayed by using a classic air gun. I also used 2k paint and emanel paint for different parts. 2K costs 3 times the enamel coach paint, but delivers a more shiny result and lasts longer.
Hi Gordon. Not a bad job at all given the condition of the panels. I painted our 2a some years ago with a brush and found the best result in "cross brushing" ie roll it on, lay off horizontally and lay it off again at 90 degrees with a very light touch - literally using just the weight of the brush. The wait a couple of weeks and T-cut it. I think your also right when you talk about gloss showing every little blemish, but the only way round that is either spray or use satin finish and polish it - a lot! Well done though, she certainly looks 100% better. Keep up the good work. All the best.
yea the panels are not even close to smooth haha, Can't wait for winter to end so i can crack on a bit more! thanks for watching!
After using the roller, you can re roller as it dries, and each time you will have less bubbles, continuing until the bubbles are pretty much eliminated. This is not a criticism. It's your Landy, and I am a great believer in doing what you want, how you want,to them
thanks Gregg, I will defo give that a try next time. its great knowing that if you mess it up, it's no big deal lol just rub it down a bit and have another go, it's so cheap lol.
Really enjoyed this video. Im about to paint my trailer so it's good to see someone using the roller.
thanks Paul, its a nice cheap way of giving them a half decent spruce up!!
I thought with coach painting people normally mix the paint with thinners to make it go on smoother
Looking good how a Land Rover should be
paintman website says no need to thin it if rollering. it would need thinned if spraying though.
a friend of mine hand painted his landy with a foam roller and thinned the paint putting several thin layers on he said the end result was superb thought id mention it
Pro tip: after rolling on the paint wait for it to set a bit - then go over with roller even so slightly to "crack up" the bubbles - they will now smoothen out to a good surface.
Very interesting video, thanks for sharing. I have already bought a 5 litre tin of paint from Paintman (sorry not bronze green but marine blue though I agree that bronze green is a beautiful colour) I was planning on using the roller on and lay off technique, I think what you achieved looks pretty good, certainly good enough for the vehicle. Too nice a finish and you would be worried about scratching it when off road! but that is also the beauty of hand painting, you can just pop the lid off the tin and touch up.
oh i love marine blue too! in fact i really wanted a blue one but 2a were less common!
I really like Novol Protect 360 epoxy primer for these - it sticks like crazy to the ally panels & is ultra-tough wearing. It sticks like crazy to everything as it happens - when we refurbish LR axles & suspension parts for people, we use it on every bit as it gives you a really good base to paint onto. It's also brilliant on the chassis.
I now find that if you want a really good non 2-pack topcoat for components like axles, calipers, springs, sway bars etc etc then Tractol stuff is very hard to beat. Very hard, it is also good for rolling & brushing (we don't as we have a booth blah blah) - but it's nice paint to work with & loads of paint out there isn't. It also goes on beautifully over the 2-pack primer - which again, loads of other brands won't - they will react like mad. Plus they do 1001 colours that are readily available - I have become a Fan of Tractol paints - the one "downside" of their stuff is cleaning the gun afterwards. That's a sod of a job - but is also usually indicative that the paint is good stuff. If it washes out easily, it's often a bit naff at lasting well. :-) Just my 2c.
Sorted mine is the same colour.thinking of painting it . cheers ......
Good job Gordon, well done.!
cheers Stanley, it ain't no showroom job lol, but as i will be using it, its good enough to tidy it up!
Looks great man! Classic colour!
thanks man, can't wait to get the whole thing done!!
Great video, painting my 1984 110 CSW and certainly will follow your advice and tips.
Thanks Gordon.
thanks! ooh i love the look of the early 110s. pretty sure i might get one one day!! what colour is it?
@@TheRetroSeries2a its a 1984, 110 csw, in green, white roof.. but I've rebuilt it, galvanised chassis, bulkhead, 300tdi now, galvanised SP series door conversions fitted, all new brakes, steering pump, steering box, list goes on and on.
So the doors etc are bare galvanised at the moment. I was getting crazy quotes for a respray, so I'm just going to paint it myself. 🤞🤞
Just in the process of painting my landy and this video is great, will definitely use the roller with laying off method now. Thanks, great video
thanks, the laying off defo helps with any runs!! good luck
Good work and very informative for me looking at doing my van soon :)
thanks
Painted my Vw t4 like this roller then levelled off looks okay, and much cheaper than a spray job 😅
Foam roller give bubbles try a flock one axus decor green ones are excellent. I use them for kitchen cabinets as well.
thanks Robert, i might give them a go!
Good work! Keep it up, I’m going to do my 300tdi soon!
thanks man, i miss my 300tdi!!!
When you steal a priceless classic piece of 4x4 history and gotta switch how it looks lol
unfortunately previous owner rubbed down original paintwork so painting was only option
Looks okay I'm in the same position, no garage, with a Defender 90, getting raptor paint off. The galvanised areas, what will you be doing there. Thanks for the share
i'm just leaving the galv bare, yea it's a bit of a nightmare working outside lol
you could do a quick wet sand then clear coat
Nice job
thanks Terry, i'm looking forward to the weather improving so i can hopefully get it finished this year!!
Bit by bit and keep on enjoying the beast.......
Nice job and gorgeous colour. You’re being a bait harsh on yourself I think. Absolutely promise you it never got such a careful paint job in the military. We used to slap it on with a 4 inch brush. I’m going to subscribe to see how it turns out because from where it was it’s looking great already. Cheers for sharing and keep it up 👍🏻
thanks Tony. yea i think you are right, i look at it now a good few month later and i'm actually really pleased with the results. I new with it being ex mod, it will never be a "show car" lol i don't think there is a smooth panel on it. hoping to get out in next week or two to get a bit more done on it so will be filming as i go!
Well done off you really enjoyed your video
Thanks 👍
Foam rollers add a lot of air bubbles into the paint
Great stuff well done!
thanks Rob
Looks good to me mate.
thanks Steve, it actually looks much better now its been o n a while!!!
brush works ok , but think you had paint not thinned enough with thinners, coach painting in the old days would take weeks, coat after coat ,thin coats ,lightly sanded ,thin enough to lay off ,but not too thin to run everywhere,it was a true skill !good bushes are a must , real bristle ,yes and autumn is best time ,in summer paint will dry too fast ,too lay off, and insects too, 5 litres was way too much tho, i litre goes far thinned 10 to 20 % with top quality xylene thinners
Thanks for the tips!
Your video showed up because I was looking for ways to paint the topping mower for my tractor, LOL. It's a pretty big area to paint being 5ft 6 by 8ft and having to do the underside and the top. I'm thinking more of brush painting it with a 3 inch or 4 inch brush to get a good thickness of paint in 2 or 3 coats and on that I'm not bothered if there's some brush marks, as long as it is hard wearing and don't wear away too quick underneath with cutting the field, LOL. My biggest worry is if the paint will dry now we are getting in to November. The tractor paint says a minimum temperature of 15°C and maximum humidity of 85%. Otherwise I'm going to have to leave it till around April which I don't really want to do as the new metal I've welded on it will of rusted a lot by then. Any advice on this would be great. By the way, what did you wipe the metal over with before painting that you said dried off quick. 🙂 Martin.
brushing seems to go on slightly thicker than roller! you can still lay off with a dry brush to get a nicer finish! i still have a few bits left to paint on mine but won't do it till next year as it won't dry!like you say it needs 15 deg. I tried last year and the damp air got into the paint and it looked awful.
@@TheRetroSeries2a thanks for the advice. Yeah I feared that might be the case. I was hoping to finish the welding much earlier then this, but it's just taken way longer then I thought to do it all. I could of done a lot to it in the lockdown from earlier in the year, but I needed extra metal to continue, but of course nobody locally was open to get any for months after. I have got the mower propped up on stacks of pallets 3 high and was going to make a shelter around it before prepping and painting it. Of course dampness could still evaporate out the wet ground in the shelter. I think I'm just going to have to cover it and leave it till late spring when the weather is better.
@@MrBooojangles probably best way! one warm spring morning and it will be done!!! touch dry in 8 hours! sat outside
Hello, nice vid and job welk done. There are double-grooved pulleys on your engine, which I am looking for a long time - and still in vain. Please, let me know any hint or tip of a source. What kind of etch primer and paint did you worked with? I painted my 1984 Series 3 ex-mod (FFR 24VV) in mid-grey ( =welsh-grey), but partly left the "genuine" paint ( infrared, camouflage) as I found it and did not grind to bare metal). After over 15 years, the paint now flakes off again at some points. The restoration of a 109 SII (1967, civil reg., petrol, truck-cap) still waits, but I hopefully get to start next year. So, you inspire me to get the job done. Regards Heinz
Try a rag roller see if how that turns out would be interesting
yea ive got a rag roller so might give it a shot!
Hey Gordon, at 7:44 in the video, what is that galvanized round screw cap? Is it a military tow socket? Can't find anything on Google!
yes military tow socket👍
That looks great Gordon - And thanks for doing the brush tip off vs just roller comparison - Given me the confidence to have a go at mine. Great video. What paint did you use for topcoat?
yea just go for it, i used paintman paint. hoping to get a bit more done over next month, so will do a bit of a video on that too
Is it synthetic or something else and did you thin it at all or straight from the tin?
@@GHOOGLEMALE not sure, i know its enamel, no no need to thin it, just a good stir then apply it!
Rust inhibitor is not the same as rust converter. It will sit I top of the existing rust.
slip of the tongue, I ment converter i used aquasteel rust converter!
Hi what's the name of the paint tho.
its deep bronze green from Paintman
@@TheRetroSeries2a or k thanks I really like the paint job you did
Skimping on acid etch primer will cost dearly in the future.
Paint for coaches is not good, you need Land Rover paint for that.
