The crimes are being tried at the place where they were committed. That was the defendant's choice. This is why the Espionage case is happening (very slowly) in Florida and the election rigging cases will be held respectably in Georgia / Arizona.
I agree that it is very wrong that politicians appoint judges: the SCOTUS problems illustrate this. This concept is illegal in Europe and taints the justice system unfairly from the public's viewpoint.
