Lovely video as always Laura. The Birch has always been one of my very favorite trees. I think I will have to go hug one and spend a bit of quality time before January is over! Thank you so much! Blessings!

Thank you for sharing and posting, you have a pleasant 'stage presence.' I'm am pleased you didn't fail to mention the role of birch with regard to the traditional besom, viz.,
    "Besom, besom, witch's broom
Sweep out evil, sweep out ill
Make the round of the ground
Where we do the Lady's will ..."
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for posting a fine video. Brightest Blessings.

Originally brooms were made of broom. The planta genista is a hardy shrub with long, straight branches ending with yellow blooms, that can endure rough use in this way.Godefroi d'Anjou (Geoffrey of Anjou, father of Henry II of England) placed a sprig in his helm as a badge,by which the family earned its name,Plantagenet.Your series is a marvelous bridge to greater knowledge! Thanks and Cheers!

the native Americans used the bark as a skin on their canoes as it is water proof if you ever look at old cowboy type films you may see it there it looks like big square shaped patches also our ancestors would drink or make a syrup from the sap when it runs in spring great video

Yes!! And in the birches' last act, a fungus grows on it that eventually kills it.....yet provides healing medicines and handy fire starting material.

Hi :) Thanks for your question, a lot of pre Christian lore states that the New Year starts after Samhain, on Nov 1st, and yes that would in Pagan terms be the New Year.
I say new year as it's our 'cultures' New Year - and the Birch is the first tree after the rebirth of the Sun.
Robert Graves wrote in the White Goddess this to be the order of the Tree Calendar, however this has been debated, and I've books in which the author creates their own Tree calendar/Ogham based on their favourite trees.

BTW: Of course, the besom is itself a fertility symbol and has other uses, in addition to sweeping out sacred space. Interestingly, the Futhorc Rune Beorc is generally associated with the Birch, but The Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem says, in part, of the Birch: "... is without fruit, it bears even so, it bears shoots instead of fruit ..." This has led to the conjecture that the Beorc Rune was actually an icon of the Black Poplar tree and not the Birch.

I am a little confused as to why there are slightly different versions of the tree calendar. For example; the book I have, The Healing Power of Trees by Sharlyn Hidalgo, has the year starting November 1st. Just like to know your thoughts on that. =)
