- Pro-shot two-camera edit of numbers from the first Broadway revival of "Follies," Roundabout 2001: "Beautiful Girls"; "Ah, Paree!" (Jane White, of "Once Upon a Mattress" fame); "I'm Still Here" (Polly Bergen); Could I Leave You?" (Blythe Danner).

I saw this show live and what I remembered most was Polly Bergen. For this number to work, there should be a synergy with the career of the performer. Ideally, it should be an actress who was major star, but then mostly disappeared. Yvonne deCarlo and Dolores Gray work. And we forget how big a star Polly Bergen was; movies,"Cape Fear", her own TV show, "The Polly Bergen Show", and many records. What a powerhouse performance!
To this day, I never understood what the bad feeling towards this production was all about. I saw it twice and enjoyed it so. Not as much as the original but much more than the last Broadway revival. Thx for the post!
My friend Jimmie wholeheartedly agrees! He said the production was marvelous - especially Jane White.
Polly Bergen surprisingly delivers a great performance in the iconic number "I'm Still Here". Would have loved to see Betty Garrett's "Broadway Baby". However, any video of a production of "Follies" is cherished. Probably one of the most brilliantly conceived theater productions ever. The 2011 production, by the time it hit Los Angeles in 2012, was in many ways equal or superior to the the original production of 40 years prior. Wonder if we'll have to wait another 40 years to see a major revival of this show.
This is amazing! This cast was wonderful, especially Ms. Danner. Her “Could I Leave You?” Is a lot more subdued than the song is usually performed, but I think it adds a lot to her performance.
DYNAMIC! This was my first Live Follies Experience and even tho i was very young, i still remember it so well!! Thank you soo much for posting this rarity!!
I think Blythe Danner is wonderful here.
Thank you, thank you, thank you...what more can I say?????
If only Polly Bergen had played mama rose
Holy crap. Bergen would have been heavenly.
It would have been a bit unconventional to have Polly Bergen play Mama Rose in 'Follies,' but after 'Hamilton,' thinking outside the box probably should happen more. Makes you wonder why no one ever played Eliza Doolittle in 'Company.' Seems like it would fit. Wow you may be on to something here...the possibilities seem endless.
Thanks so much for this!!!
Thanks a million! I have such a bad video recording of this - how come this is so professional? Amazing.
It's taken from the extensive raw footage shot by two cameras (one close, the other wide) to be used to create the show's press reel/b-roll. I edited the two cameras together.
aurora spiderwoman I see. Thanks for your work. I personally loved Ivey and Danner in this revival unlike most people. I thought they brought out the sadness and pathetic nature of these two women. Great to see again up close.
I loved this! Doesn't seem like twenty years ago at all, where does the time go? I saw it I think in late summer and by that time Louis Zorich and Joan Roberts had left but I got to see Marni Nixon.
An underrated revival.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
You are very welcome, glad you liked it.
Love all your posts
Thank you so much.
I liked this stripped down production when I originally saw it. The only mistake was Dana Ivey, who couldn't sing a note.
Make that Judith Ivey (:
Dana Ivey would have been a more interesting casting choice (perhaps more for Phyllis than Sally haha)
Betty Garrett
Am your fan
Brave tutte
The first thing i saw of Follies
Is what I measure them all against
It was on public television
The 1985 Follies in Concert -version.
I was ....12 that year, see.
From loving that
I researched the origins
And saw the National Theater version in a movie theater for a "first time seeing it performed".
The 1985 is my Dream Cast
As it was theirs
When It happened.
Jane White would've been an utter hoot as the producer from Nine.
Anything from MEXICO you need or Colombia! Here I am
Does the cartel charge shipping fees or are they included?
Too bad someone hasn't got a copy of Ms. Bergen's t.v. production of the Helen Morgan story. As I remember, it blew Ms. Blythe's film off the screen. Anyone know of its existence?
Saw this production- doesn’t stand up to well over fussy direction
Jane White wasn't in it the night I saw it, but Blythe Danner was stunningly beautiful. The production really wasn't worthy of the show, and I've been told that at one point Mr. Sondheim left the theater declaring "This production will not be recorded!"
I read somewhere that Sondheim had a role in casting this production so it's kind of surprising this was his reaction.
Polly Bergen was the Greatest. RIP - Very Underrated actress - Beautiful Voice. She should have won the Tony.
I saw the original production in the 1970's - Yvonne didn't sing it correctly - I don't mean to be unkind but, she wasn't a singer.
Awful...I’m convinced that all “Follies” queens out there will lol never believe this is simply not a good play.
The national theatre production that was recorded and played in a few movie theatres across America a few years back was freaking amazing. Did you see that production?
