The worst thing is many Chinese children I grew up with don't know these are knockoffs. They still refer to these knockoffs as "Lego toys" and think Lego is a type of toy instead of a particular brand.

RabidPrairieDog Why? I am sure that any day another country thinks they can out-cheapen industry in China, shit they can take it. That's the thing, China literally steals every technology. Over there, the entire country literally uses all the technology they've stolen. I think it's worked out very well for them, and very bad for the US. It was a bad move for the US to protect the market so damn much and to the point where it cannot retain company profits.
+Beren Scott I blame the U.S. for the most part. We simply do not take cyber security very seriously. Take it from an electrical engineer who has worked for the military on multiple projects as a civilian contractor. Here is the gist of what happens when the public sector detects a possible breach or hack: 1) Panic, 2) Hire an expensive contracted firm specializing in cyber security to assess and provide solutions to the problem/breach, 3) Hem and haw at the cost of implementing the solution(s) the IT security firm that they hired recmmended, 4) Have everyone change their passwords, and 5) Continue like business as usual using the same bottom-dollar outsourced IT firm and pray the next breach is not worse. This is why the American public sector is such a good target. They just don't get it. Hacks against private companies are much less common and damaging because they use in-house IT and there is less bureaucracy to implement solutions.

Regarding building blocks, the problem is not another brand making them, but another brand faking the licenses. Example: here in Brazil we have a somewhat popular brand called Xalingo. It's not that bad and they make their own sets and even some original pieces, and they're perfectly legal, Lego don't mess with them. Same goes (+ or -) with the much more famous world-wide Mega Bloks and Kre-O.
What the original brands don't like is when knockoffs start copying licensed themes like SW, Marvel etc because, off course, those are the most profitable sets. You see, by early 2000's Lego was kinda red with their bills. What strongly helped them grow again (to a much larger size than what they were, btw) were the licensed sets. If they lose this chunk of the market for the knockoffs, they may start falling again as a brand.
Anyway, yeah, we live in a world where some licenses are accessible only by some economical classes, so your criticism is valid on this point. You simply can't buy an original X-Wing without compromising your basic necessities if you are a minimum wager. Another Brazilian example: Set 75102 - Poe's X-Wing Fighter, a Lego set from 2015, costs (on average) more than half the minimum monthly wage down here. And behold: by mid 2016, more than 20% of the Brazilian FAMILIES were living with LESS than a minimum wage.
And this is Brazil, a country where Lego has official stores on some malls. Now mind yourself Africa, the poor side of Asia etc...

Been ripping off Star Wars and Batman for like 20 years already.
I guess the only good thing about it (if you aren't the Lego company) is the packaging is good for a chuckle.
I've heard they are getting pretty good and amazingly intricate with the knock offs for a fraction of lego's outlandish prices!
And they're also making some unique original designs and molds from themes LEGO had never licenced!

After serving in the military for years, I would love to see a piece on how the Chinese military simply copied everything from our latest generation of hardware to the simplest camouflage patterns used on our uniforms to the shape of our helmets and gears. While Western armies spend $$$ on research and field testing to optimize effectiveness, the Chinese simply reap the benefits! With very similar camouflage patterns, uniforms and gears, I could only imagine the confusion caused in any future possible conflicts with China. That was the primary reason why American GIs weren't issued camouflage clothing fighting the Germans while the marines were issued camouflage, because the Germans wore camouflage while the Japanese didn't.
When I was little and still lived in China, my dad would occasionally bring back hotwheels from his business trips, and I thought they were some sort of high end car models.

Amazed how otherwise intelligent people don't seem to understand the concept of intellectual property,and copyrights. These knockoffs (funny as Hell as they are) are a slap in the face to the original creators,and owners of the rights to the actual product. Imagine if you had created,or legally had the permission to create,an original product...then saw a dozen blatant fakes of the same thing YOU worked hard to make happen. Even worse the revenue from these knockoffs aren't coming to you who worked hard on the original product, but to the people that are now profiting 100% off of your hard work. That is the reason many people get really angry at this sort of crap.

I actually like 3rd party bricks, but not to this extent. I like alternative brick systems, not the stuff that gous to that extent to rip-off companies.

20 Years ago in Taiwan there used to be a bunch of shops selling knockoff toys,legos,puzzles you name it. Star wars became star walks. Disney toys were called Disnay etc... Until the Intellectual property laws started kicking in the late 90's. Today, knockoffs are mostly gone in Taiwan. Nowadays, its very hard to find knockoffs in that country. Selling knockoffs now can be prosecuted.
I actually have the Lego knockoff listed on number 8. I even have it all. It consists of Ironman, The Increase Hulk, Captain America, Green Lantern, Batman and The Joker. It's pretty cool, IMO.
