  • "Libertarians, who I'm afraid will be disappointed in [the] November [presidential election], will look at the Free State Project as a way that they can actually make a difference on a smaller level with more impact," Matt Philips told Reason's Nick Gillespie.
    A 15-year-old initiative to get libertarians to move to New Hampshire, the Free State Project reached a milestone in February by collecting its 20,000th pledge to relocate to the Granite State within five years.
    Gillespie sat down with Philips, who's president of the Free State Project, at FreedomFest 2016 to discuss how the initiative is progressing.
    About 7 minutes and 30 seconds.
    Produced by Alex Manning. Camera by Austin Bragg and Jim Epstein. Music by Podington Bear.

    People joke about millennials, but I swear every time I hear a REAL Libertarian talk (no matter what subsect they prescribe to) it sounds like my generation. So get ready for a world of free-trade, healthy lifestyles, caring for the land, diplomacy before war, less invasive government, and more personal freedom.

    We looked at moving to NH a few years ago but found out that property taxes are extremely high. Other taxes can be avoided by reducing your income or changing your spending habits, but property taxes scare me the most, since you have to pay them or lose your home. I figured we actually pay less in taxes overall in Quebec, Canada (tax capitol of the world, so I thought) than we would have in NH and that really nixed it.
    Since this is more of a local issue, it seems like it should one of the first and most pressing for the FSP to address. Has any work been done by the FSP towards tax resistance or other pressures against the local governments?

    As a libertarian who's been following the progress since the beginning, I've given up on the FSP. It's been about a decade since the early movers started moving there, and what do they have to show for it? They abolished a few knife laws? There's tons of activism going on over there, but what has it achieved? For all of the liberty media, all the civil disobedience, all the protests and electing people into office, how has NH actually gotten more libertarian in the past 10 years? What laws have been abolished? It doesn't seem like they've really changed anything. It's embarrassing for the FSP that MA and ME are both about to legalize weed and NH still has a ban...

      I am going to speak as a Canadian to let you know that the method of legalizing a drug matters as this is still legislation by the government. The way and amount it is taxed; The criminal offences still enforced around specifics of the drug; The stifling business regulation around production, distribution, and sale.
      In Canada, since legalization (as opposed to decriminalization), the number of retail businesses in many meropolitan areas has actually gone down and the price in the retail market has increased 30%. Many former retail producers weren't made a part of the legal market. As a result, the number of people selling in a manner that could get themselves a long jail sentence has actually grown, meeting the demand of a market for product sold at ever cheaper black market prices; 25% of the legal retail market price.
      It is important to measure the outcomes in a bid for freedom and not be giving the government unnecessary control over your lives, in the process.

Losing dependance on ever appreciating, artificially inflated assets like the housing industry. Correcting this rampant misallocation of resources. Don't back down free state!!

  • @cmanlovespancakes
    @cmanlovespancakes 8 років тому +8

    I don''t see it happening. The state has been moving further to the left each election cycle. The sad fact is NH is surrounded by very liberal states, and it is only a matter of time before enough liberals move to the state to permittely change it. This happened to the rest of New England. Back before the 1960s New England was one of the most Republican areas of the country but as new generations grew up the political landscape changed. Now the people moving to NH in droves are young professionals who want to leave their cramped Cambridge, Boston or Somerville apartments and find their first home to raise a family. Many cannot afford the expensive housing close to Boston so they look further out of the I-95 and I-495 rings. NH housing is slightly cheaper, though not by much if you want to live near the border. Property taxes are much higher in NH, than Mass since there is no sales tax or income taxes. Still these young professionals are willing to do the 40 min commute to have a nice house and some land. I would not say these people are sympathetic to the Free state or any libertarian movement. Many of them are not even American since there is a huge migration of people from Asia who work for the large tech companies in the Boston area.

    • @fakecubed
      @fakecubed 6 років тому +8

      Sadly you are right that a lot of people from authoritarian Mass move to NH each year. Many are trying to get away from Mass politics and want to live someplace more free, but enough bring their politics to NH to cause more problems too. The sad fact is that everywhere on Earth is becoming more authoritarian. Do we simply give up? At least the FSP is trying to do something, and they have actually gotten some stuff done. What are you doing?

The libertarians who you can take seriously are the ones willing to work with the current system to move it in a libertarian direction. We got medical MJ several years ago, and these days derim and even legalization regularly pass the House. Give us a few more years to get a toehold in the Senate, or (please God) a decent Governor, and we'll have legalized marijuana, along with what we already enjoy that will NEVER pass in other states: no income tax, no sales tax, no knifelaws, no adult seat belt laws, open carry, shall-issue concealed carry, same-sex marriage, anti-real-ID, ... seriously, if after 10+ years of work we legalize marijuana and ONLY THEN you want to move here... well, I'll be pretty underwhelmed to have you aboard

    Philips' commentary here is ENTIRELY about political involvement, how statist this is. If that's what you want to do, have the integrity to call it by its name. There are a lot of nonpolitical people who get excited about this movement like myself, who ended up pretty dissolutioned in seeing more root statism in participants there than in the places we came from. And I came from a predominantly socialist-communist area. It doesn't matter what your goals are, if you are playing their rules and basing individual interactions on state definitions, obligation, demands, etc, then you are becoming increasingly more dependent on the state.

    So was his whole liquor law answer more of, "It's such a money maker for the State, that we have a huge uphill battle to try and get rid of it", OR was it, "It's such a huge money maker for the State, and because the monopoly keeps prices low, we don't WANT to get rid of it"? It kind of sounded like he was okay with it because it's cheaper liquor, which, obviously, isn't very Libertarian.

    • @mattbarrett3618
      @mattbarrett3618 8 років тому +3

      In NH, the liquor states are owned by the state because they didn't want masshole refugees raising the prices. It probably won't last in the long term, but it is one of those things we haven't fixed yet because it isn't a problem at the moment. Even though it is state owned, it is cheaper than the rest of New England. We don't have sales tax here because most of our money comes from stores on the borders with taxachussetts, maine and Vermont. In fact, when dukakis was governor of Massachusetts, he sent state troops into nh to write down mass licence plates in nh liquor stores so he could tax them - but nh state troops were sent in when our governor found out and arrested them.

    Problem: The political structure of New Hampshire is incredibly unfriendly to numbers relevant to individual freedom. 20/400 is vastly less significant (5%) than the success in Alaska, which was 4/40 in 1978-1982 (10%). But it's worse than that, because it's harder to find, elect, and retain 202 electable libertarians than it is to find, elect, and retain the 30 necessary in AK, DE, NE, and the 60 needed in ND and WY.
    Second, NH has no initiative or constitutional amendment. Clueless.
    I wish them well, but they chose the state out of convenience, not optimality toward their goal. Thus, a free state 2.0, 3.0, etc. is needed.

    • @slimat420
      @slimat420 8 років тому +3

      The libertarians in the NH house have been doing a good job with the relative few reps (about 20) the reason is because they don't need 200 + libertarian reps. Using one side or the other the libertarians are able to side with Republicans on some issues and Democrats with others, this way they are the ones who decide what laws are passed as long as the Republicans and Democrats don't vote the same ways. NH is unique also with the accessibility of the House reps most you can call up their numbers and you are calling their house or cell. I visited NH on a few occasions and was able to talk directly with reps in the halls of the capitol or even at FSP events.

      Finding electable libertarians is not as important as having enough voters to elect them. 20K people have pledged to move there within the 5 years following the trigger date.
