Good to see Meer make a comment here. I remember his brother Aslam and myself were good friends as I'm the son of the ex president of the Anglo Indian settlers association Sydney G. Smith a well known journalist who lived there. Off course Whitefield got its name due to Mr.White who lived at Rock haven which later got to be owned by Quentin Blake's mother. In fact even Sir Winston Churchill Prime Minister of England had resided for 3 months at Rock Haven in the early days. I remember Meer's father and uncle were known as bade Mamu and Chotte Mamu. The boys working there were Arif,Chand Basha and late Abid Ahmed Shareiff's brother.
I am the grandson of Meer ziauddin , popularly known as Meer saheb, I am also named Meer ziauddin on my grand father's name ,my grand father opened this store in 1915,it was the only store those days and used to cater to most people of white field and surrounding villages, from groceries ,kerosine ,cement, and even pharmaceuticals ,there was no other shop those days . It is very very unfortunate that presently this more than a hundred years old ( opened in 1915 )store is in such a shabby state .
