This should have been easy but this job turned into a complete nightmare for me. I was under the mistaken impression that pulling the fuel cap would relieve pressure in the line. I had an incredibly difficult time getting the nuts on both sides of the fuel line to seat correctly, meanwhile I'm getting covered in gas that continued to dribble from the line. For me, this was the roughest DIY job I have completed so far on my Toyota. In retrospect I would have been happy to pay to have it done for me by a pro. Would highly recommend attempting the steps in the comments to fully relieve pressure in the fuel system. That might have been beneficial, at least for me. I will smell like gas for the next three days.
I appreciate you leaving this comment. I was already on the fence about doing it myself and it just sounds like too much of a hassle. Thanks for saving me the pain.
I have a 1997 Tacoma 2.4L 4 cylinder Extra-Cab so I'm guessing my fuel filter is on the engine block right under the intake manifold. I've been getting a strong smell of gasoline when I open my driver side door but I have yet to figure out where it is coming from.
Can you disconnect the fuel system by pulling the fuse for the pump and letting the car die and therefore have no fuel in the lines making the job cleaner?
Yes, pull the EFI relay and try to start the vehicle to depressurize the fuel system. Turn the vehicle off and disconnect the battery before working on the fuel system.
My 99 Taco fuel filter is next to my motor under the intake. Bracket bolts was a pain in the ass, that 17mm banjo bolt had to be soaked real good. Not to mention the wire harness by the fire wall was on top of my second banjo bolt which goes to my fuel rail. I had to put up a fight every bolt I touched. And Autozone sold me a one size fits all Tacoma fuel filter BS crap, after install on the bracket, I had to loosen the lower bracket bolt and 10mm to loose filter bolt, so I can turn the filter off the 3 lines on the bracket so my fuel line to my banjo bolt to my fuel rail can be screw in. And that little crush washer was all over the place in that tight little spot. I got it done but It was pain in the ass. Next time I'm gonna modify the fuel line, and relocate that fuel filter.
I don't have a lift so paid a shop to do that. Can't imagine doing that while laying on my back. I like the old days when the filter was in the engine compartment, even with fuel injection.
With all of these Toyota fuel filters, the first time you put them on, they will almost always leak. The threading is horrible. Then you take it off, put it back on a second time, will still leak. on the 4th, 5th, or 6th time it will eventually seal. Just keep torquing.
@@Salve_Regina8 just honestly keep putting it on right, take it off, retry etc. I tried twice and took it to my mechanic and he did it two more times and it worked. He said it just takes 4 or 5 times for everything to seal up
On my 2002 toyota tacoma the filter is located in the engine compartment right below the head on the side and it is a pain in the A$$ to remove. wish it was like in the video.Oh good video!Cheers
Not the right way to do it. Removing the electricity from the fuel pump and running your vehicle until it dies is the first step to take before attempting to remove the fuel filter.
Well you want to make sure the connectors are the same type and diameter. It would be annoying to try and fit a new filter in that has a slightly larger or smaller inlet or something. Just trying to save some potential headache. Thanks for watching!
Pull the battery out of the tray and you have an angle to reach it 10 o'clock low. Still isn't easy but it was better then trying to get to it from underneath the truck.

Is never that easy man , my is a nightmare think you get ready , install and boom !! Start to leak .. I never have this problem entail I replaced for new one 😠😡
Matt Nye I ended up going and getting some flare wrenches and was blown away by how much of a difference they make. It leaked at first but 1/16 of a turn made all the difference. They really allow you to torque down on it. BYW I didn’t use the crush washer.
The correct answer is, if you have a 99 Tacoma V6 is under the driver's side door, but if you have a 2.4 base cab like mine, than is on your motor under the intake. Just take off your driver's side wheel and remove the rubber mud gaurd look deeeeeeeeeeeep inside and there it is. one line goes back and up to your fuel rail, and that banjo bolt is to connect everything together., and another line on the filter goes to the top driver's side front. that's the easier one.
Well, I can tell you the 1997 tacoma 2.7 liter 5 speed manual, the fule filter is up the the block, not in the location of this video.....wasted my time on this one
I came for the filter and stayed for the music. Such a groove!
You should have mentioned what size wrenches you were using on each bolt.

They really are a bitch to change. I just bring plenty of rags to absorb the gas and keep it from running down my arm.
I'm sorry to laugh but that shiy happens... I'm about to mine so thanks for the advice buy goggles..lol
I appreciate you leaving this comment. I was already on the fence about doing it myself and it just sounds like too much of a hassle. Thanks for saving me the pain.
For the 3RZ 4cl engine the fuel filter is hidden under the upper intake manifold FYI.
Mine lol
It has one under the drivers door too.
Lol wish it were that convenient
So are there 2 fuel filters?
Oooooo weeee!!
This music is funky!!!! 👍🏻
I like the music! I'm pumped for the job.
I have the '96 Taco with the F2rz Four cylinder. It's a whole different deal. I wish it was this easy.
if filter is under intake manifold,it can stay there.if engineers make it that hard to get to,maybe its ment to last the life of the truck
Narrator sounds like Eric from That 70's Show.
Oh my goodness with that old mic I totally do! I never picked up on that before. Thank you for watching!
2CarPros thanks for the video, it took me a minute to figure out who you sounded like, Topher Grace. 🙂
No problem! I should get that old mic out and claim I'm him lol
What sizes wrenches??????
Burn
My filter for 2000 is under the intake manifold. Had to take out the battery and remove the front tire just to get to it. TOOK many hours to change.

This is 6cyl location. Not 4cyl. 4cyl location is under manifold
Please post more videos for this model of Tacomas.

I was wondering the same myself. My maintenance book says to depressurize the system and these guys don't mention it .

Be first or be last I agree with you. .I took me for ever to changed the filter too.
.1999 tacoma..
2003 same way. Under intake. Took wheel off and got to it better. Still a pain
I don't have a lift so paid a shop to do that. Can't imagine doing that while laying on my back. I like the old days when the filter was in the engine compartment, even with fuel injection.
Those were the days! That's why I have a 1967 Camaro. Thanks for watching!
I have an 01 Tacoma and I do not see the gas filter. Exactly where is this located?
Under your ass!
With all of these Toyota fuel filters, the first time you put them on, they will almost always leak. The threading is horrible. Then you take it off, put it back on a second time, will still leak. on the 4th, 5th, or 6th time it will eventually seal. Just keep torquing.

I used Teflon tape to seal it !!!
almost makes me not wanna change mine.
Hi, great video. I was wondering if you need to relieve some sort of pressure before removing the fuel filter ? My truck is fuel injected..
thx
Thank you for watching! The action of replacing the filter will relieve the pressure.

@@SDsailor7 weird. I have a 2002 tacoma 4x4 v6 extra cab TRD SR5. And itis located under the driver seat under the truck.
@@Salve_Regina8 that is how it is on my other truck a 2000 trd prerunner.
On my 2004 Tacoma, the filter is not located there. It's located like on a 97 runner, under the intake stuff on the block. It is a bitch to get to.
rutbuster1 same here on my '04 one hell of a challenge to get to.
rutbuster1 i have no idea, going to have to take a ton of stuff apart to get to it.
That's what I was looking at. You ever get yours done? I know the filter has never been changed. I just want to change it. You know?
Where is it located!!!?? start there.
under zee truck.
How often should this be done and will the gas be flowing out during the entire process?
It helps if you loosen the gas cap, but yes gas will be pressent
When replacing injectors or 100k miles at most
baloney. my '96 4 cyl. is nothing like this.
+laredoland same with my 2000!!
+laredoland check under the intake manifold, that is the location on the 01 4 cylinder
Doesn't it make sense to compare the new to the old BEFORE removing the old one? Just my 2 cents worth.
Well you want to make sure the connectors are the same type and diameter. It would be annoying to try and fit a new filter in that has a slightly larger or smaller inlet or something. Just trying to save some potential headache. Thanks for watching!

I think not. I think is on your motor. Good luck
Braden Rossini nn
how often should you replace these?
Depending on vehicle 30000 to 50000 miles. Thanks for watching!
No need to replace if car has good power......waste of time and money.
How about when you have 330,000 miles like I do🤣 this is going to be fun 🙄
do you need to empty the gas tank first?
Nope. Thanks for watching!
No washers needed?
Aren’t there copper washers that go here?? Or no?
thanks change it in 5 min with this video
I have a 2001 Tacoma 2.4l 4 banger. Is my fuel filter in the gas tank?
+Pandawatch on the 2001 2.4l the fuel filter is under the intake manifold mounted on the side of the engine
+Corey Bergstrom Thanks for the reply I got it replaced.
You should not group those years into one video like this because my filter on a 98 tacoma is not there.. as some of the others are saying also.
My filter is on my engine under the intake. I had to go though my fender after remove the wheel.
Thats because its a 4cyl nothing to do with years
I love that he keeps saying “use line wrenches” and he’s using open wrenches the whole time. 🙄
Condering everyone cries when I don't, it is mandatory at this point. Thanks for watching!

would this be the same for a toyota emina 1998

Your'e welcome.
ok my 2000 tacoma doesn’t have filter there. i cant seem to find it. anyone know where it is located
Ismael Flores under intake manifold
Where is it located!!!??
Under your car or truck sometimes under gas tank if you google year make and model it will tell you the internet is amazing
well, the tacoma in my shop today, it's an '04 and the filter is buried under the intake manifold.
I cant find the location./
Mine leaked so I put on the copper crush washers it came with... still leaks

Follow the fuel line from the gas tank to the fuel rail it is in between underneath the truck.
