During the entire war, only 11.6% of the 3,300 planes hit the target, and 27.5% returned to base (either due to lack of fuel, not finding the enemy, bad weather or any other reason). Those who returned were humiliated by the officers until another time when they flew again. In total, around 47 American ships were sunk according to William Gordon, three of them were aircraft carriers, all escorts, small and unimportant. According to the United States Air Force, 4,900 sailors died as a result of the attacks, and 4,800 were injured.

Japan was developing infrared-guided missiles, but the level of technology at the time made it difficult to put them to practical use, so various suicide attack weapons were used.
The developer of the infrared guided missile who worked for the Navy was later the founder of SONY.

best edit so far. those men saw something bigger and beyond there self life - their people , family and country. which is today totally missing- ideals . even if it means certain death. ( not a war supporter but im pretty sure that we dont have this amount of brave people amongs us anymore). remember war is triggered by governments.
