    Thanks so much for this! I think what is particularly impressive about this lesson is that you offer an absolutely complete piece of music that really expresses the style, with no back end ornamentation you don't show us how to accomplish! The choice of music is top notch too. Not that I don't enjoy twinkle, twinkle little star, just that it offers little to aspire to. I've been at it now for a little over a week (slow study :) and I can play through it slowly, but have my eyes on the increased tempo prize. That transition to the G7 slows me down every time! All the best.

    It's important to point out that you are now picking and strumming over the sound hole area whereas on earlier videos you strummed over the 10 - 12 fret area for non Clawhammer playing. Great tutorial Matt. Thank you.

      Nicely spotted John. Good point - definitely strumming further back for this style.

    Great lesson. I now practice banjo on my uke. I say bum titty. Not just playing claw hammer. I just like the words. God, I am childish!

    Awesome video. In my concert uke with nylon strings I struggle to get the sound in the BUM part. I don't know how long does it take to get a clear sound in BUM. Your explanations are exactly what I was looking for. I will keep on it! thanks a lot!

    I have a question, please...
    On your notation, your up arrows for the "dit" part of the ditty are different lengths.
    Should I eventually be trying to only strum as far as the note I've just played? (This is for well into the future when I have more control over what's happening, obviously!)

    • @mattsteadukulele
      @mattsteadukulele  2 роки тому +4

      Great question Esther. There’s no strictly right answer. Some players will only strum as far as the preceding melody note. To be honest though - when done at speed you can’t really hear a difference - the brush down is so light it’s more of a rhythmic thing. That’s the way I think about it.

    Thanks a lot for this lesson Matt! I'll enjoy trying a different technique. A nice opening of the new year. 👌
    Ps by the way, what's that double sound hole instrument behind you? A Mr. Mai? I have been curious about those for a while...

    Thank you so much! I’ve been trying to master claw hammer for so long. One ?. I have arthritis and my melody finger seems to naturally be my middle finger vs my index. Is this ok or should I wrangle my index into formation?
