Watching 9 person panels has been like watching a scaled-down simulation of a social media argument. There's a bunch of people on one side that think one thing for various reasons which they don't entirely agree upon against a bunch of people on the other side that think something opposite for various reasons. Some of the people on one side will argue against the people on the other side thinking they are perfectly countering their position, while not recognizing that what your reasoning is based on has nothing to do with the reasons some of your opposition operates under. So then they retaliate based on their position, only for the first group to feel like it has nothing to do with what they were arguing (which is mostly true). This constant speaking past each other creates a mobius strip of argumentation that never resolves, because it would require a critical mass on both sides to have more nuanced understanding of all the people participating in the discussion.
DemonMama really makes this hard to watch and I had to fight the urge to just close the damn video multiple times. EDIT: I had to tap out at 52 minutes.

7 minutes in. Destiny made the perfect answer to the vaccine question. There are no empty facilities in India, capable of emulating the tech and processes used for making the mRNA vaccine. It is not bucket chemistry. You can't just throw the materials together and expect it to work. As for the safety aspect. Anything even remotely considered a safety concern of a medical process can massively cripple trust in those processes.
@@backwardthoughts1022 if they have facilities to make the Moderna vaccine. Moderna has said they won't pursue patent violations. So why isn't Taiwan making this vaccine? I cannot believe Destiny's point of a 13 year-old streaming sexualized content on Twitch was so glossed over. WTF, that should end the conversation! It's not ok to have a platform open to 13 year-olds to stream this content. Make it +18 to stream or view on Twitch if this content is acceptable, should be clear
It's hard to stay on topic because people can't express themselves clearly about their point, and so when they in the end make a mistake in their logic...people pounce on that topic rather than focus on the point.
That was a legitimate crash course in vaccine IP dissemination and the potential "hidden" or "unintended" consequences of opening up the gates in terms of complete transparency. In the abstract, this is such a nightmare scenario globally and India 🇮🇳, near term needs the support so badly. Any corner of the globe that can potentially assist must, if only for self preservation reasons.
That's the thing - the IP is out there. You can go look up how mRNA vaccines work right now, and if you have the skills and equipment begin producing your own COVID-19 vaccine. The "release the IP" argument is stupid. Nobody is unable to manufacture the vaccine because they can't get the license to do so. What they can't get is the skills and equipment, and there's nothing anybody can do about that.
@@jeffwells641 I don't think knowing how mRNA vaccines work is the same as knowing how to produce a specific mRNA vaccine. @@Tehz1359 definitely interesting, and I agree it's because they've for better or worse become the chief representatives of their sides in this weird little sphere. Whenever Demon Mama starts talking about how “mad” her opponents are, it’s obvious that she is projecting hard. Looking at her body language just reeks of her being mad or upset, and the fact that she can’t hide that shows a general lack of immaturity from her. Demon Mama isn’t in the debate space to actually debate, that would require her to be accepting of when her ideas are challenged. I’ve never seen her portray that attitude, it’s always her way or the highway, and debates with her just devolve into her yelling and demeaning you until you agree with her. She’s not in the debate space for debates, she’s in the space so she can have her ideas be arbitrarily validated by her audience or peers, and any direct challenge of her ideas is something she reacts to with full hostility and bad faith.
I think the answer to the hot tub stream issue is fairly simple and was addressed early on: NSFW. Pretending as if that does anything to protect a kid from content is silly, this issue is relegated firmly to the space of profitability and advertising. The issue of appropriate content is an internet wide issue, and it's a bit silly to contextualize it strictly in terms of Twitch streamers. If you want to sort of self categorize (as a streamer) with a rating system that holds you to a bit of a different standard, maybe implement a type of MPAA system with it's own set of punishments for violations. Then advertisers could be a bit choosier with their representation- but that takes some serious restructuring on the part of Twitch and opt-in ability. Twitch is suffering from a massive identity crisis right now, and that's tanked much larger companies in the past.
I mean, but wouldn't a "NSFW" label be applied to most of Twitch? Political streams and even games like Mortal kombat, COD, and Cyperpunk. I find it odd that people have a problem with hot tub streams but don't have a problem with minors playing or watching violent and inappropriate videos games.
@@blindeagleace3629 I'm sure that a lot of content that would normally be considered NSFW or tantamount to an "R" rating in movies would be classified as fairly standard fare for Twitch. Meaning, the threshold for NSFW content on the internet or Twitch (especially when it concerns language and video game/ simulated violence) is generally higher. It feels that way, like "sexualized" content is in its own category, and sensitive language/ politicized content/ video game blood and guts falls somewhere below. At least in the eyes of advertisers and Twitch itself. That's just my perception though.
Oh! Oh! I know this one! When there's a complicated issue and I haven't taken the time to understand the factors involved you get up in people's faces and say "do better!" Or rather it makes me feel better at least.
Hey, Destiny, I’ve been a viewer of yours since last year and it’s helped me try to define my moral pillars more concretely. I live in India, though, and I think that I have a closer and potentially stronger understanding of the issue in India. The US has been playing for vaccine nationalism since October of 2020. They knew that partnering with Moderna would mean that some of the vaccines produced by Pfizer and Moderna would be exported to the EU, but Trump was able to simply write a vaccine export embargo to prevent that. In doing so, the US had a vaccine surplus despite a less-than-ideal roll-out and less-than-ideal participation from some parts of the citizenry. As for India, the story is far different. There are multiple vaccine manufacturers, them being Bharat Biotech and the Serum Institute. There appear to be ties between the ruling party’s politicians and the Serum Institute’s higher-ups which is why the current vaccine situation is a brow-raiser. India’s ruling party brutally chastised a gathering of Muslims back in March of 2020, the Tabliqhi Jamaat, a gathering of about 4,000-5,000 people. This was back when India first went into full lockdown for 21 days with the promise that it would stop the spread. However, since then, even as the first wave reached its height, no one stopped going out as they wished. Masks, which ought to have been a necessity, became seen as an optional measure. This is also partially due to India’s jobs programs and social safety net being deconstructed by the ruling party today, meaning that people had to go out for their jobs. Soon, it appeared that the first wave was receding as cases went down to 15,000 a day. It seemed that natural herd immunity had taken its time and reached us after all, but the second wave was something that we were not ready for. With 400,000 cases and 4,000 deaths a day, the toll is so high that mortuaries and crematoriums are unable to keep up. Even those numbers are only a fraction of the true amount. In one state, the number of recorded COVID deaths was 10x lower than the number of COVID cremations done in crematoriums on that day. Now for the vaccines. Covaxin, Bharat Biotech’s vaccine, received an emergency use approval before the second phase testing had its results peer-reviewed. This did raise some eyebrows but it was brushed off as everyone raced to open the economy. At the start of the second wave, though, Odisha, one of the country’s most populous states, made an emergency request for vaccines in the millions of doses, stating that they would run out by the next day. At this point, the Central Government of the country brought what is seen by many as an outrageous crony capitalist ploy. The Central Government stated that they would purchase 50% of the required vaccines with the federal budget and that the State Governments would have to buy the vaccines in auction with other state governments as bidders. Covaxin, made by Bharat Biotech, costs $2 to produce with a small profit margin. It was bought and administered by the Central Government at $6. The state governments had to buy their share at $9. For context, many low-pay workers in India earn less than $0.50 a day. So yeah, the vaccine patents make little difference to the actions required. The raw materials are what will help and action to prevent the hiking of vaccine prices will curb the massive number of deaths that are happening in India today.

Came here to comment about the rare disease industry because I work in it, I'm glad to see some people have mentioned it. Rare diseases (defined as conditions that affect less than 1 in 200,000 people) have considerable incentives: tax credits for clinical research, waiver of the Prescription Drug User Fee (currently at almost $3 million for a new drug), and up to 7 years of market exclusivity after approval. There is a market incentive to develop and manufacture treatments for rare indications, and it is a great example of the public/private partnership of drug development that Destiny mentioned. Often the reason that treatments don't exist is not because the industry isn't working to create them, it's because finding patients to test for efficacy is difficult (what a shock, it's hard to find patients with a rare disease). Listening to Demonmama talk about the pharmaceutical industry was an excellent demonstration of how little she knows about it. Same goes for many others on the panel. Also, very little pharmaceutical research is publicly funded, particularly clinical research (i.e. research completed after animal toxicology studies have established a drug is most likely safe for human consumption and testing). Companies spend mountains of money on drugs that go absolutely nowhere because a molecule shows promise and then is found to be not efficacious enough 5 - 10 years into the process and millions of dollars later.
Dylan seems so burnt out which is sad because his panels are always the best to watch when Destiny does this stuff. Always seems so many levels above the others in terms of productivity, professionalism, organisation etc.

Just one comment: that some technological product is "state of the art" doesn't have to mean it can only be produced by "state of the art" manufacturing complexes.
Why is this such a hard topic???? Any company or country with the physical capabilities to manufacture the vaccine has the capital and the connections to get permission to make these vaccines. There is literally no one with the capabilities to make these vaccines that is being prevented from making these vaccines due to patents. If somewhere like India had all these factories ready to make vaccines but couldn't get permission they'd probably just take the hit and sued

I hate DemonMama. They're just awful, in the way they engage, full of bad faith, personal attacks, passive aggressive jabs, it's incredibly tedious and unwarranted. Really hope they fix their personality and/or personal problems that keep getting in the way.

Fuck, I hate they/them pronouns. I'll still use them but I hate them.

But, because lefties are so rhetorically bankrupt. That a word like Patent which in most cases is designed to protect businesses. They don't want it used in any situation. Even when it's not being used to protect businesses.

If you make it 18+, why wouldn't it just be full-blown porn then?
It's hard to stay on topic because people can't express themselves clearly about their point, and so when they in the end make a mistake in their logic...people pounce on that topic rather than focus on the point.
Destiny is always the person that makes these panels interesting
That's like saying "You can go look up how to make soup right now, and if you have the skills and equipment you can begin producing your own soup" when you are trying to learn how to make Gordan Ramsey's Swearword Sage Soup.

Also if I didn’t use the right pronouns for Demon Mana, please let me know so I can correct that.
Demonmama monopolizes the conversation and calls everyone mad. Same as it ever was.

I’m definitely more of a lefty than destiny but god damn I do love watching him dunk on demon mama

44:30 Destiny says look at his twitter, so I went and it's all just among us memes
You should post this on r/destiny with sources linked for your claims. Destiny doesn't read yt comments but everyone in the community frequents his subreddit
