  • Lyrics for Kohaku to Ruri no Rondo by Mika Kagehira from Ensemble Stars.
    English translation by me.
Kanji/romaji from the ensemble stars wiki.
    Translator notes:
There is a lot of symbolism in this song and the word choice is very deliberate. It’s is a very poetic song and I tried to convey the imagery as best as possible with my translations but I’ll explain it more here.
In the first verse he’s describing himself as an abandoned wind up doll left in a box, his eyes are marbles and they reflect the moonlight. Then in the next verse someone finds him and winds him up, springing him to life and playing a song he dances along to, like one of those wind up jewelry music boxes with a twirling ballerina.
1:30 The ‘amber’ and ‘lapis’ he mentions are his eyes, implying that he will blindly follow the music, not needing his vision to perceive reality.
1:44 This line and the next have Mika’s full name hidden in it. First, the word ‘crescent moon’ is ‘mikadzu’. It doesn’t use the same characters as Mika’s name but given the line directly after, it is likely intentional that is has ‘mika’ in it.
1:48 The characters of ‘Kagehira’ are ‘影片’ which are hidden at the end of this line “影の一片を”. It’s also worth noting that the character in between the two characters of Kagehira is ‘一’ pronounced ‘hito’, the same way you pronounce ‘人’, meaning ‘human’.
1:56 Some wordplay in this line is lost in translation. He uses the phrase ‘form of a human’, ‘人の形’ which is likely a play on ‘人形’, meaning ‘doll’.
2:11 The specific word for ‘tuner’ used is ‘調律師’ notably the last character ‘師’ or ‘shi’ is the same character used in ‘oshi-san’, further enforcing the idea that Mika is talking about Shu in this song.
