  • Or can they?
    I had some fun testing out different ways of growing lettuce. I set up two wicking beds and two kratky totes. One of the hydroponic setups and one of the soil beds had Super Greensand added to them as a source of organic silica.
    Buy Super Greensand on Amazon at www.amazon.com.... Check out their website at www.supergreen... for more info. I was monetarily compensated for including their product in this video.
    The wicking beds had an unintended design flaw that gave the plants insufficient water. However, germination and seedling growth was better in the bed with Super Greensand. I think this is likely due to improved moisture retention from the silica.
    Watch this video if you are interested in the nutrients I use or the overall process of growing plants this way • How to do Simple Hydro...

      @Sister Mary Clements an RO filter will last for about 2 years so it pays for itself and I liked dirty gardening but just in my opinion I think my stuff produces better when I change my water and keep my temps and humidity pH and so on within the plants boundaries but then again it's just my opinion.

      This is a very creative and inspiring channel. I hope to attempt growing plants hydroponically someday, preferably through the might of Kratky, so I'm going to keep watching and studying the videos to help get an idea of what to do when I get the materials to start. There are still a few questions I have, like where the water level should be at to start growing and what plants I should start with as a beginner, etc, so maybe you could make/recommend a more tutorial-based video, or something? Thanks!

I watched your video with so much joy, for different reasons. I love both gardening and music, you have got a taste to match the beauty of art and nature!. I also remembered my precious brothers, they are gardeners, builders, they are strong, even rude sometimes, but their souls are beautiful, and my soul loves them very much. No, he just did a shit job. I got my soil tested but didn't get the results back til I had already planted my lettuce. My soil was deficient in several nutrients, and I hadn't added any fertilizer and didn't weed them. They still grew much larger in the same time frame as what he grew under more controlled conditions. He just doesn't know anything about growing in soil it seems. You might be able to grow bigger plants on average in hydroponics systems but this video is just not a good representation of that.

    Definition of Soil:
    The top layer of the surface of the Earth in which plants grow. Soil is composed primarily of disintegrated rock particles from the Earth's crust. Soil particles are classified by their diameter. Clay particles are less than 0.002 millimeters, silt is 0.002-0.05 millimeters, and sand is 0.05-2.0 millimeters in diameter. It takes 100-500 years to produce an inch of soil from rock of the Earth. A healthy garden soil should be more than 40% silt with good aeration, water retention, and 1-5% organic matter (humus and living organisms).
    Peat moss is found in bogs and is an ingredient added to potting mixes. It isn't soil.

    • @matthewkheyfets1309
      @matthewkheyfets1309 4 роки тому

      @The Senate you're correct. You actually need about ZERO. Your soil should be close to zero organic matter or at least under 5 percent. The organics matter should go on top of the soil about .5-2 inches thick. Organic matter around roots just begins to rot and takes oxygen away, causing to all sorts of issues. Some things just take longer to decompose. Bark works until it decays, but it takes a while for that to happen. Best soil is a mix of sand, clay, and silt. But nobody uses sand in pots because it's freaking heavy so they substitute it with slow decomposing stuff.

    • @dropbear2972
      @dropbear2972 4 роки тому

      Matthew Kheyfets compost>organic matter. You can grow in compost only so I honestly don’t know where you got any of your info

    • @matthewkheyfets1309
      @matthewkheyfets1309 4 роки тому

      @@dropbear2972 you actually can't grow in pure organic compost in most situations. In raised beds, you can. But in pots, very likely the plants will die. Clay is not really organic matter.

    Soil growers cant handle your ignorance of how the Soil Food Web works. "Its got a lot of Peat moss", well Jeb peat moss is Inert (meaning it has no nutrients in it). So you are basicly comparing a finely tuned high performance race car (bottled nutrients) to rust bucket with no engine that is up on blocks (lifeless soil). I don't want to come off as a hater but it has taken me years to sift through all the lies and misinformation that is out there about farming and gardening. So in conclusion; Jeb, I do not think you understand enough about horticulture to be teaching it. You are spreading dangerous misinformation and that helps no one. I'm am however glad that your project inspire people to get growing, that is priceless! But please be careful with your opinions and statements, you are speaking to a lot of beginner gardeners.

      Hey man, funny video ive been a fan for a long time.
      Hes got a good point though. When you gave all the white powder to the hydroponic ones did you give the same to the ones in the dirt? Because peat moss has basically no food in it for a plant, I work for a retail store that sells all this stuff and you really have to give them food to have them grow properly. Greensand is avaliable in lots of different brands the one we sell at my store is way cheaper than what you got. But its really more of a suppliment there is no nutriuents in there.
      Its all fun and games till you manipulate the truth to get the outcome you wanted, instead of making it fair you either intentionally or inavertantly handicapped the soil ones, and gave the hydro ones an unfair advantage.
      I love your content but really its not right to call this a comparison.

      @stixglass8442 6 років тому +9

      Cadaver thehacker I couldn't agree more. He thinks a MircleGro product (even if it is certified "organic") is a "plug and play" solution. It's clear that he does not understand the living soil food web and the difference between that and chelated bottled nutrients (plant steroids).

    • @cadaverthehacker
      @cadaverthehacker 6 років тому +5
