- September 24, 1974 at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. Kaline was the lead-off batter in the top of the 4th inning and hit the first pitch off Dave McNally for a double.
Kaline missed the 400 home runs milestone by one, retiring with 399 home runs. I'm glad to see that footage of his 3,000 base hit survives.

Rest in Heaven Mr. Tiger
Kaline's 3,000th hi came in the same year as Nixon resigned from the presidency amidst the Water Gate scandal. It's hard to believe that 46 years have gone by since then. Kaline was 39 when he got his 3,000th hit. He just celebrated his 84th birthday one month ago on December 19, 2019.
Too bad he didn’t hang around for is 400 homie run. He would of been first in the American League. The Red Sox player was the first can’t recall which one the catcher or left fielder
Wow, I didn't know he was going to be the first American league or to do that. He was truly a humble guy, but I remember an interview where even he said he wished he would have hit that one home run more, such a massive accomplishment to just hang around a few weeks more...
RIP, Al.
Great. Teagards...
