The day they knocked down the palais My sister stood and cried The day they knocked down the palais Part of my childhood died, just died - I can't be the only one who fights back a tear hearing that part. Now, after reading the prologue to this video, even more. The song really transports the listener, even if, like me, they were never familiar with such a time and place.
These are Ray Davies's lyrics to "Come Dancing." They put a parking lot on a piece of land Where the supermarket used to stand Before that they put up a bowling alley On the site that used to be the local palais That's where the big bands used to come and play My sister went there on a Saturday Come dancing All her boyfriends used to come and call Why not come dancing It's only natural Another Saturday another date She would be ready but she'd always make them wait In the hallway in anticipation He didn't know the night would end up in frustration He'd end up blowing all his wages for the week All for a cuddle and a peck on the cheek Come dancing That's how they did it when I was just a kid And when they said "come dancing" My sister always did My sister should have come in at midnight And my mum would always sit up and wait It always ended up in a big row When my sister used to get home late (Recitation) Out of my window, I could see them in the moonlight--two silhouettes saying goodnight by the garden gate. (Singing resumes) The day they knocked down the palais My sister stood and cried The day they knocked down the palais Part of my childhood died Just died (Guitar solo) Now I'm grown up and playing in a band And there's a car park where the palais used to stand My sister's married and she lives on an estate Her daughters go out now it's her turn to wait She knows they get away with things she never could But if I asked her I wonder if she would Come dancing Come on sister have yourself a ball Don't be afraid to come dancing It's only natural Come dancing Just like the palais on a Saturday And all your friends would come dancing While the big bands used to play (Instrumental conclusion) The name of the video's director was not stated here, and I had not learned who that worthy was by the time stamp of this remark.
Loved the 80s and the Kinks...love this song...such a great tune from a talented band .inwish we could go back to the 80s music, happier days for sure❤❤❤❤
Thanks for the restoration, Crosscut. I often used to use this song, with the fuzzy youtube video copy, in English lessons (EFL), devising language learning games with the wonderful narrative lyric of this song. I'm not big on nostalgia through music, but this song (which is actually about nostalgia) does give me lovely chills.
@stevenweint7893 when ray was a lad, his sister bought him a guitar for his birthday. Later that night she went out dancing and died of a heart attack on the dance floor. This song is an homage to her.
I started watching MTV on the very first day it was launched. I was 9. When this video came out it was much different than the others. It has a soothing quality or something. When I hear it now the imperfect pitch of Ray Davies is awesome. This music sounds human. Like it’s breathing. It sounds so different from music today. Simpler is usually better. Especially if you’re as talented as the Davies boys. The Kinks played a MASSIVE part in starting modern rock. One of the first to use distortion even if it didn’t exist yet. Ask Van Halen what they thought of the Kinks😊. You really got me jumped VH up the ladder fast! Where have all the good times gone?😊
Yeah, think about it they're probably the fourth most important band of the British invasion, and that's because the Beatles, the stones, and the who existed. So also probably one of the most underrated bands because of that
I think this song means . A parking lot was constructed on a plot of land where the supermarket once stood . Before that , a bowlin alley on the same site which used to be the local Palais frequented by the big bands . My sister used to go there on Saturdays for dances where all her boyfriends would come to call . It was natural thing to do , just a another Saturday date . She would always be ready , but deliberately made them wait in anticipation , unbeknownst to them that the night would end up in frustration . Spending all his weeks wages just for a hug and a kiss on the cheek . That's how things were when I was a kid and they would say " come dancing " my sister always obliged . She returned home late and my mom wait leading to arguments . When they finally tore down the Palais , my sister wept as a part of her childhood was lost . Now , as an adult playing in a band , I see a car park where Palais once stood . My sister is married , living in an estate , waiting for her daughters to return home . Knowing they do somethings she would never be able to do . I often wonder if she would still be up for dancing like we used to , if I asked her . Times have changed , but the memories of our youth remain dear to us . Everything changes , nothing stays the same . Every now and then ,we wish things could go back to those simpler times when life wasn't so complicated . But life goes on , and we can only dream . Come Dancing
Excellent restoration. A brilliant song that reminds me of Joni Mitchell‘s 1970 release of ‘Big Yellow Taxi‘, where they paved paradise to put up a parking lot and a couple of ugly buildings.
In a span of four minutes, Ray Davies (who was 38 years old at the time) plays two completely different characters in two in completely different time periods: The shady boyfriend as a conman in 1957, and a catatonic in 1982, and the younger brother, as a 13-year old nerd in 1957, and an aging rock star in 1982.
Love this video! I've seen some copies with missing audio horn parts. Just sounds weird to me. But I do remember watching this video when I was a teenager and hearing the poster being ripped off of the wall. I haven't seen that copy since 😢😢😢..update!!! It's a VH1 classic copy with the video somewhat tilted 😮 it's the 4:05 time length 😊
I only just realised there's two 'younger brothers'. The one we see watching the sister and her date outside is Ray and I guess that means the nerdy looking one with the glasses must be Dave.
It's pretty impressive how long the Kinks were able to stay together, stay relevant, and make good, original music.
Come Dancing song & video is one of the happiest song ever sang & performed.
Ray & the Kinks made such beautiful songs then.
The day they knocked down the palais
My sister stood and cried
The day they knocked down the palais
Part of my childhood died, just died - I can't be the only one who fights back a tear hearing that part. Now, after reading the prologue to this video, even more. The song really transports the listener, even if, like me, they were never familiar with such a time and place.
My grandma ... Say this in the 80s.
It basically was the story of her young life
The world would be a much different place if the Kinks had never existed, think how much she changed things on a huge scale by giving him that guitar.
I agree, brill song brill video, brill band ! Enough Said !
Careful it's not recommended to play with the space time continuum
There can only ever be one Ray Davies.
A video. A story. A song. A dance. A life in the 80s😊
Absolutely!!
one of the best songs of the 1980's. ❤
this song makes me feel good
It's also quite sad. Everything we love goes away
These are Ray Davies's lyrics to "Come Dancing."
They put a parking lot on a piece of land
Where the supermarket used to stand
Before that they put up a bowling alley
On the site that used to be the local palais
That's where the big bands used to come and play
My sister went there on a Saturday
Come dancing
All her boyfriends used to come and call
Why not come dancing
It's only natural
Another Saturday another date
She would be ready but she'd always make them wait
In the hallway in anticipation
He didn't know the night would end up in frustration
He'd end up blowing all his wages for the week
All for a cuddle and a peck on the cheek
Come dancing
That's how they did it when I was just a kid
And when they said "come dancing"
My sister always did
My sister should have come in at midnight
And my mum would always sit up and wait
It always ended up in a big row
When my sister used to get home late
(Recitation)
Out of my window, I could see them in the moonlight--two silhouettes saying goodnight by the garden gate.
(Singing resumes)
The day they knocked down the palais
My sister stood and cried
The day they knocked down the palais
Part of my childhood died
Just died
(Guitar solo)
Now I'm grown up and playing in a band
And there's a car park where the palais used to stand
My sister's married and she lives on an estate
Her daughters go out now it's her turn to wait
She knows they get away with things she never could
But if I asked her I wonder if she would
Come dancing
Come on sister have yourself a ball
Don't be afraid to come dancing
It's only natural
Come dancing
Just like the palais on a Saturday
And all your friends would come dancing
While the big bands used to play
(Instrumental conclusion)
The name of the video's director was not stated here, and I had not learned who that worthy was by the time stamp of this remark.
The happiest sad song the world has ever known...
It’s beautiful. ❤
A No. 6 Billboard hit in 1983. An all time classic.
One of the Kinks best
Ray Davies is the quintessential English songwriter.
The Kinks are a Mt. Rushmore band to R&R.
That's the hill m willing to die on.
I am CRYING!! 🥲
Thank you!!!!!!
🙏 ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I am also an old guy who enjoys the kinks...67 years old & going strong😊🎉
Only in the mind..ye old 😅😅
this song has always brought a tear to my eye
Memories of the big UK dance halls which seemed to die out in the 1960s...wonderful times
Cultures in the US ruined dance clubs.
I simply love this song
Old guy who loves the Kinks
I always get chills when the modern Kinks make their appearance.
Another 80s song that reminisces about swing dancing
is "Dance Hall Days" by Wang Chung!
This is a great superscale! Very nice job!
@@Aramanth Thank you very much!
One of my all-time favorite music videos - original, witty, and a fine Kinks tune (of course!)

@@theotheoth Appreciate your kind words
I love this song.
So grand that this is being rediscovered! I've loved this tune for eons!
Hearing this song always picks up my spirit
the backstory of this song is so sad
Why?

great song
saw the Kinks at the Philadelphia Spectrum one month after this was released. as expected the show was just all out fun with a killer setlist.
One of the all time greatest groups ever and best bands of the 60’s and 70’s havjng their biggest hit of the 80’s …should have been a number 1
Yeah, think about it they're probably the fourth most important band of the British invasion, and that's because the Beatles, the stones, and the who existed. So also probably one of the most underrated bands because of that
This just hit me out of nowhere haven’t heard it in literally 20 years😂😂😂😂
La teniamos en la mente y corazón - pero no sabíamos el nombre de esta Joyita. Abril 2024. The Kinks - Come Dancing-> thnks for the music.

Memories of watching MTV...and this song was also played heavily on the radio.
Classic!

Imádom.................from Hungary
Now that I know the backstory it makes me tear up at the end.
❤
Incredible ❤
Genius song, how do you fit it all this into 4 minutes? Brother, Sister, the Chancer/Boyfriend. The back story and the history about the Palais.
The day they knocked down the Palais my sister stood and cried, people of a certain age will understand that line.
@ it’s just a reminder that your childhood has gone forever, it takes an image like that to pull you up.
they knocked down the building where her and her boyfriend use to dance. This was the building.
Great memories from the good ol MTV era.
The bandleader keeps excellent time.
playing this song in honor of the theaters in Westwood (UCLA) that are closing after being there for 100 years :(
I can't hear this song and not get happy.
And yes. He is begging rhe death to come and dance ❤
I think it could be scaled since its film... but who knows where ,,, the 'big band' 's audio at the end could be better
When MTV actually made and played music videos.
And the decline in live pub music gig's now no one goes out anymore ..............
2025 where th hell is everyone o yeah listening to todays cheese
Made in britain the mighty kinks legands
Its the nightclubs that have now been replaced by car parks and supermarkerts as well. Do people go out dancing at all anymore?

The model he dances with looks like the same girl in War Baby by Tom Robinson
This print seems dark, there was a much better one formerly on UA-cam.
I try not to make any adjustments in exposure in videos. Usually, the director has done something like that for artistic reasons.
@@CrosscutFilmsSask Sorry, could just be my eyes getting older. Still my favorite Kinks song and that's a high bar.
