Wait, wait, wait so this is a completely different plot to Frozen that stays closer to the original Hans Christian Andersen story but it was dismissed because of the less than stellar animation and the fact that it was promoted as a Frozen rip off? Huh, this shows how marketing can benefit or jeopardize a movie.
Disney is shit. Saw all 4 movies. Snow Queen is better. It actually helps and the morals stay with you. Orm the troll was fun and he was a very unique comedic and interesting character. Gerda was amazing too. She makes Elsa and Anna look useless. Frozen 2 was nothing to the 4th Snow Queen movie. Gerda becomes full on dragon lady and helps her friends out. A freaking dragon lady.
4th movie made Gerda a superhero. A dragon one and takes on a harsh ruler. Very fun movie. The Snow Queen was a more fun character and she makes boring Let It Go cheap Queen look like scammed Baskin Robins ice cream.
I actually saw this movie, and. . . .it's really good. Like Chad said, for the budget, it's impressive; Good action, decent pacing, the american voice actors were decent anf there was actually a good character/ villain arc for two "villains." {Ohorm and the Snow Queen} I enjoyed this better than Frozen. (I had to see it twice in theatres, and I wasn't impressed. Either time. Except for the Snow animation.) I highly recommend the Down Queen over Frozen. It's cheesy, and there's plenty of "because movie" moments, but . . . . It works.
NO, IT'S NOT. This quote from the story/Bible sums it up: *"Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven."*
In my opinion the soviet cartoon from 1957 is one of the best, I also love the live action soviet movie as well (the one from 1967). About 20 years later after those were filmed, us children from the socialist block grew up on them. And my child who's 11 years old, watches those cartoons and movies, and he prefers those over the modern 3D animated Hollywood stuff. The american dub, I suspect is done in more modern times (and apparently without any regard of the director's intentions of conveying the characters). I doubt people from western countries had the opportunity to watch soviet (or any other cartoon from the countries of the socialist bock) while those cartoons still aired - cold war and stuff.
the snow queen was amazing, my mom used to read me the fairytale when i was a kid, and this film was a cute litte almost accurate version. i loved it. doesn't mean i will ever let it go.
that's like the realistic snow queen movie. the boy was named kye and gerda where he is captured by the snow queen and gerda goes to find him but visits all the seasons first. am i the only one who remembers??
Actually I had seen that movie. I thought it wasn't that bad. When I saw Frozen, I had heard that it was suppose to be based off of the Hans Christian Andersen story. It was not even close. I had forgotten about this movie until a few months after when I was scrolling things. Then I remembered how much I had liked it. Compared to Frozen, at least it doesn't need as big a soundtrack. Personally I found that it's the music that made Frozen decent.
+A. Leeser Nooo, the fact that Frozen was a legitimately good film made it what it was. Now look, I don't care what others think of the film, but of the things I liked about Frozen, the music, while being up there, isn't the best thing about the film.
+Ross Pit: shark hunter a legitimately good film? yeah if you call a movie with a plot like swiss cheese "legitimately good". It was a decent film, clearly budgeted towards young children who didn't care how Else got her powers, or why she could create a living snowman or why Ana said she was trapped in the castle when, it her sister was just sitting in her room the whole time, she could have walked away or something. I mean it's not that hard. It is a film that has a basic storyline about sisters and a big film score by great musicians. It is decent.
"The Snow Queen was a nice girl who was exiled for her magic usage and, through her isolation, became the bitter Snow Queen." That's exactly what I thought they'd do to Elsa, turn her into a Scandinavian Morgan Le Fay, but they obviously didn't and I still think it was a missed opportunity.
I know, right? It's so obvious they shaped Elsa around "Let It Go" rather than writing a song for a fully developed character. Don't get me wrong, it's a great song, but it comes out of nowhere. One minute, Elsa is running away from everything she knows, clearly upset, and the next she's singing, "Screw that, I'm happy with who I am"? Where did that come from? Did she meet someone on the road who changed her mind? Is Elsa depressive and "Let It Go" was her emotions swinging back the other way? Seriously, what happened between her leaving the palace and reaching the mountain? And come on, Disney, she could have been such an awesome villain, or at least an anti-heroine. The story was set in Scandinavia, and they had trolls--think of what would have happened if Elsa met some trolls who didn't like humans and they formed an alliance and she became the mysterious "queen of the mountains", defending the trolls and herself while slowly going mad from isolation and . . . you get the point. Also, I totally agree about the endings of Disney films. I saw the stage show of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" at La Jolla Playhouse and it had elements, and an ending, that was much closer to the book. It was a perfect blend of the source material and the magic of Disney (Menken's score and Schwartz's lyrics). If they could do that with their films and not be so worried about what overly sensitive parents would think, we'd have another Disney Renaissance on our hands.
Well, I know that the animation team went on a research trip to Norway to get inspiration for the film--that landscape, the culture, artistic designs, etc--but I don't think "Frozen" itself is set in Norway. It's more like "Once upon a time, in a fictional land inspired by Norway . . ."
See, I choose to listen to the words of "Let it go" rather than the tone of her voice while singing it. Clearly, Elsa was going to be the bad guy of the movie. The lyrics of "Let it go" scream of "Fuck that town, I'm amazing, and my powers will no longer be held back by those weaklings. I don't need them, I'm stronger than all of them." It was her villain song... or were you not creeped out by the lack of a villain song in Frozen? Most people say "love is an open door" is the villain song, and I say bull shit. Hanz wasn't going to be the villain, that's why he's so nice for over half the movie, then out of no where... "IMMA KILL YOUR FAMILY!" It's why Kristoff is a better match for ELSA as he loves all things that have to do with ice and snow. They were going to have Elsa be evil, then her mind was going to be changed by the man who couldn't hate something that had the power to create something so wonderful. But- "Disney princesses shouldn't need no man!" and the 'true love' of the story is sisterly love, which makes no sense. So instead of the actual fairy tale we deserved, we got a shitty little movie with a great song that could have been epic if they left it the villain song. Think about it, some of the best songs are the villains refrain. They robbed us of a dark "Let it go" and a coherent story. Fuck this movie.
I know that at the start, they were planing on having Elsa be the bad guy of the movie. There's even concept art from it and some songs written for that kind of setting as well. A setting that would be more heavy around a prophesy as well. But then they decided to scrap that idea and go with a much simpler setting instead.
did you know that the lady in the garden is supposed to represent spring, the king is supposed to represent summer, the pirate lady is supposed to represent autumn and it's obvious what the snow queen represents. All four are supposed to be siblings. in other versions (such as an earlier non CGI) it makes this much more obvious however it slightly differs as the summer king is actually a princess of dreams looking to find a prince and also tries to find Girda (apologies for the spelling) a prince. Another difference is that instead of pirates they are gypsies.
No I disagree with the Pirates being Autumn and The King being Summer, in this cartoon you can... see Irma (The Snow Queen) = Winter The Lady from the Greenhouse = Spring The King and his two kids = Autumn The Pirates = They only Summer left.
I KNOW RIGHT. I liked it too when I stumbled across it on Netflix and watched it just for laughs. I thought I would watch it for only a few minutes to see how bad it was. An hour fifteen and minutes later I was listening to the credits song and thinking "Well, that was pretty decent.". I think it could be redone and be really good.
I completely agree, It is a much better adaptation to the original book turned ballet then frozen. I ecspecialy enjoy that Kai is kidnapped just like the book.
The snow queen follows the actual story of the original fairytale with minor changes (like the wizards and slightly interpreting the characters Gerda meets) where Frozen is more just inspired by the original tale. That's why The Snow Queen is surprisingly different. Most if H.C.A's takes were quite sad. Many had sad or bittersweet endings (like The Little Mermaid dying). So it seems different to other "kids" movies because it's based on the original and not just inspired by it.
Oh, yeah. Most of Hans Christian Anderson's stories ended horribly for the main characters. I can't think of one that ended in any way other than the character being screwed in SOME way. Look at The Little Match Girl for crying out loud. But the way this movie handled the original material was a pretty decent representation. Way better than Frozen's interpretation, anyway. I love when studios actually bring the literal story forward. No one knows the originals today, and bringing the real story forward would be a huge boom for early readers again.
My best friend actually introduced me to the Snow Queen movie, and not in your average "pull up Netflix and watch it" style. She convinced our teacher to show the movie to the whole class! (That teacher WAS awesome 😊)
When I first saw the Snow Queen's cover on Netflix I thought it was a poor frozen remake. But after I watched it I loved it and realized it wasn't that at all
As a fan of the original story, I was wondering how the 2012 version of "The Snow Queen" was but this is the first review I've seen. I'm glad it's good, I was hoping it was, though it's not as faithful an adaptation as I thought it would be from the looks of things. But it's a lot closer to the original HCA story than "Frozen" is. The only thing "Frozen" has in common with the original "Snow Queen" is that there's a queen who has ice powers.
+The Toontastic Toon ha true though that movie wasnt that bad though i wasnt exactly paying attention to it when i watched it and the second movie was a lot better than the first😜
Yeah, me too, I honestly thought it was going to go in the way of a drunk joke. Like he drinks the soda vodka mix, watches the movie, and says, "That was pretty good." Then the skeleton guy goes like, "No, no, you're drunk, watch it again while being sober." Rewatches the movie sober: "Oh Jesus! What is this crap?"
the snow queen is way more magical than Frozen although they have different story build up. But in my taste i prefer the Snow queen since it's way more adventurous and magical :)
A lot of the English voices are well known anime voice actors like Wendee Lee, Kirk Thornton, Cindy Robinson, Marianne Miller, and Christopher Corey Smith
That's one thing that I really hate about Frozen's influence on pop culture. It's popularity as an adaption of the Snow Queen tale has effectively overwritten the actual story. Now any attempt to cover the original version of the story is going to be seen as a ripoff of Frozen. Frozen has become the original. And that's something that's really depressing about pop culture. We oftentimes praise the twist more than the base to the point that the base becomes the twist....
I really appreciate that you didn't just bash Frozen (which I was waiting for after the announcement that you didn't hate the Snow Queen) and that you gave this movie so much credit for what it is! A couple of notes you might be interested in since you said you weren't familiar with the original story and just based on what you posted between the two movies you may not have been aware of Frozen's back story. The Snow Queen follows the Anderson tale pretty closely in the feeling of there being a male and female character, male gets captured, female decided to go get him, meets odd characters in the mix including a witch that decides to keep within her green gardens, that the back story of the Snow Queen was that she was feared for her powers and became evil due to loneliness and anger from such fear and hate. They did a great job with the story The original storyboards of Frozen had Elsa being pretty much the Snow Queen in this movie. Think if Elsa had never had the positive influence of Anna and only experienced Mr. Weaseltons unsupported theories of her being a monster and a kingdom of hate and fear. Disney decided to take the story in a different direction of a more what if variety and Frozen as it's known now was born. The original title for Frozen was the Snow Queen but obviously it was changed. Whether Disney changed the storyline or name because they were made aware of this version of the original story or because it's just part of their creative process in general is up for debate and your own decision making! Thanks for another enjoyable review!
I remember reading The Snow Queen (the original story) when I was about 8 years old. Hearing your basic summary of the film adaptation is bringing back a lot of memories. It sounds like it stays pretty true to the Hans Christian Andersen classic.
In the original tale the three places Gerda comes across during looking for Kai are seasons... She is on her way to Winter (Snow Queen), and has to travel through Spring, Summer and Fall for that.
I love the Snow Queen much more than Frozen. Comparing the two movies, Frozen is very meh. 1. The world - in Frozen, did we ever truly see what Arendelle was like? We saw a few streets and a bit of the palace, but nothing really. In SQ, we see so much more of the world. Yes, the snow field they go through isn’t fleshed, but you have to expect it, it’s a field of SNOW. But each location they go to in the movie is beautifully made, and even though they didn’t have to, they gave each place a backstory of sorts, making the world of SQ so much more fleshed out than that of Frozen. 2. The characters - in Frozen, we have four main characters and a villain. That’s it. Yes, there are a few henchman and random characters, but nothing substantial. SQ has three main characters, Kai, a villain with an actual backstory, and side characters with personalities and motivations. 3. I just like it more. Frozen isn’t really a good movie, and The Snow Queen should get more of the spotlight.
THANK YOU for this video ! I stumbled upon the Snow Queen by searching "La Reine des Neiges" which is the French name for both movies I was like "whoah, a whole movie on UA-cam ! It's not Frozen but let's check it out" And I was amazed. I'm glad someone like you could share the same feelings in a video touching more people :) Keep on with your good videos ! (And please draw the 10-years-later Grenda from Gravity Falls
The Cronicles of Narnia is a compilation of traditional folk stories all in one universe (very nicely done) but its nothing new. The White Witch is clearly inspired by the Snow Queen.
What I dislike about Frozen is Elsa has no character arc resolution in the end. She's a sympathetic character, BUT the whole time she just ran away from her problems and didn't face them herself! Her powers being stabilized didn't even come as a result of Elsa becoming willing to face the world outside her comfort zone, it ONLY happened because Anna's sacrifice (which spoke more of Anna's sacrifice since she went through growth and had to be strong for her sister). Honestly, they could have made better use f Elsa's screentime after she ran away because even after Anna came to try to get her to go back and face her issues she had to be DRAGGED back to Arendelle. Had the guards and Hans not went to her castle would she have ever gone back? I don't get the impression she would have. Anna, for the record is the better and far more likable character, even though everybody acts like Elsa is the most awesome cause she can create ice. Honestly, I think she's one of the least productive Disney heroines, second only to Aurora since she didn't get a chance to go anything.
Except with only a year difference, it's possible this studio got an idea to do a Snow Queen movie when they heard that Disney was making a movie loosely based off of the original movie. However, it's not a knockoff. Frozen is very (and I do mean very) loosely based off of The Snow Queen, while the movie with the same name follows more closely. They're two entirely different movies, and not to be compared.
neither is a knockoff since they are both based on the same hans christian andersen fairytale but both changed things and went into very different directions with the plot
Weird I thought that "Frozen" was a knock off of "The Snow Queen" since I saw "The Snow Queen" first. But then I noticed that they were completely different so I stopped comparing them.
+GreekgeekdoesMC I remember my dance school did a dance version of the snow queen and all the boys had to be the ice demons and the Autumn thieves, apart from Kai of course

I love the story of the snow Queen...which is why when Frozen came out, I knew it would be different and frankly I like Frozen as it is... Frozen. It's not the Snow Queen and it never will be. I think of it as two different entities because they are two different stories.
I really liked the anime version of The Snow Queen. It was really well done and very cute, with good music. I got excited hearing Kai and Gerda in this, I might have to give it a watch
why is kai so passive? because he is also passive in the original story ^^ gerda is always the main protagonist in the story :D kai is the "damsel in distress" xD
The Snow Queen actually looks more interesting than Frozen too me. Something always bothered me about Frozen. It got really old after I'd only watched it once or twice. Parts of it I just seemed out of place. What does "True Love's Kiss" have to do with Anna bring back her sister and saving the kingdom? And why was Anna trapped in the castle? What the hell did the trolls have to do with anything? Why did they treat Elsa like the main character when it was obviously Anna? Also, Olaf, I love you, but where the hell did you come from? It just had way to many plot holes, and the Snow Queen looks simpler and more interesting.
+Pinkie3Point14159 Yeah, but why. The plot could've worked perfectly well without that whole debacle. Plus people always say "Frozen was different. It said you don't need a man to save you." Not really. It never said that. And Elsa's really not that empowering. She didn't refuse to be saved by a man because she could do it herself. She still had to be saved, it just so happens that it was by her sister. If either of them were at all empowering, it would be Anna, but, of course, everyone prefers Elsa because she's got powers.
+PandaProductions Actually I think they prefer Elsa because Idina Menzel is the best broadway singer that I've ever heard... well... okay maybe except that one Cats song... anyway, you have a point as a character Anna is better. And her song is cute, and funny, but her VA is sadly not Idina Menzel and thus she is not as well liked. Poor Anna.
Frozen is a small movie, to me. It doesn't feel like an adventure at all (and say what you want about Disney movies, a lot of them give some sort of feeling of adventure), it's... too contained. And yes, there are other Disney movies that seem pretty contained and I still like them (like Beauty and the Beast), but the thing is: those movies came out at least 20 years ago, and they were groundbreaking at the time. Frozen just... arrived too late and added nothing new. I think that an adaptation of the original tale would've been something new for Disney and had the potential to be even bigger that Frozen is, but they decided to go with a simpler story. It's disappointing, honestly.
it really is, because in the concept art Elsa was supposed to be the villain and in the earliest concpet art both Kai and Gerda were present and were supposed to be a part of the story, so the story in general was actually supposed to be closely based on the Snow Queen than it turned out to be, no idea why they decided to change everything so suddenly and make it this boring in the end
I love the movie The Snow Queen! When I first saw the trailer, I was intrigued enough to want to get it. When I did, however, I kept in mind that it was probably gonna be a bad movie and that I shouldn't get my hopes up (I even worried that I was throwing my money away). But when I saw it, I absolutely loved it! Best of all, the more and more I watch, the more I come love it. It's one of those movies you have to watch serval times in order to understand better, but it's also a movie you come to enjoy better the more you watch it. I recently just got the sequel and, well, I'll admit it's not as good as the first. They even changed Orm's voice actor which drove me a bit crazy but I found myself able to cope with it (Gerda did, too, but it was far well noticeable). They're both really good in my opinion and, in all honesty, I prefer The Snow Queen to Frozen any day. It's not that I hate Frozen, but it's just way overhyped for far too long. As a Disney fan and writer, I was practically able to predict all the world-wide shocking twists and turns from a mile away while everyone else was completely stunned. I was able to do the same for How To Train Your Dragon when I first saw it, but it was far less amusing in Frozen. But in the Snow Queen, I was constantly surprised by the story and how well it was written. The only thing that really felt out of place for me was when Gerda and Orm visit the crazy royal family. Other than that, I really enjoy The Snow Queen and am so happy that you also enjoyed it, Chad!
the thing that bothers me the most about Frozen (though I do like the movie) is how unlike the original fairy tale it is. this movie is more of a 'fairy tale with a twist' whereas Frozen is more 'loosely inspired by the fairy tale' which really disappoints me. I was looking forward to seeing how Disney would adapt the characters and settings from The Snow Queen but now I'll never know.
+Rururufufu Rererefefe That's the thing, it started off as an adaptation, and midway down the line, they decided to do something original instead. That's why in the credits it says "Inspired by the book 'The Snow Queen' by Hans Christen Anderson", not "Based off...".
+Rururufufu Rererefefe I couldn't care less. Despite H.C.A's fairy tales being the only ones I like, I still could not care that they changed it. I mean, we don't bash Disney for changing Hunchback from its original source.
I feel like I was the only one who watched Snow Queen around before frozen came out and actually enjoyed it. It had a very good plot story. I never knew until now that frozen and snow queen was similar through the covers. It was kind of frustrating when people called it a frozen rip off. The movies are very different in good ways.
2:11 is actually the earlier Russian adaption made almost 60 years ago so yeah the English dubbing and the quality is going to suck although for its time it's pretty good in my opinion. Well this could just be my biased opinion as I have watched it many times in my childhood in the Russian version (as I am russian) which created a different experience for me.
2:10 That movie is actually dubbed into English from Russian, was made in the USSR in 1957, and has been mentioned by Hayao Miyazaki as a major inspiration, with more impact on him than the Disney movies. Also, if memory serves, I believe the newer Snow Queen you're watching actually came out on the fiftieth anniversary of the hand-drawn animated one, to pay homage to it. *------- The more you know
Your editing is so great. I can tell you put effort and thought in to it. Also the mix of jokes and actual review have a good balance. I can really see your improvement on making videos. love your videos
Hmm, that was actually a very interesting take on the original fairy tale, and I really like how they incorporated the random encounters from the book, such as the palace and the bandit queen, although the way those encounters play out are kinda different. Also, this version actually has a bloody mirror in it!
Wow. I've seen that movie title all over the place, and yes, I literally thought it was a knock-off to Frozen. But now, seeing it was made before Frozen and basically has a decent on the storyline of things along with animation. I might give it a try. I adore cartoons, but I've had my share of knock offs. But this, I will definitely give it a chance.
@@soysource3218 the idea appeared in 1840 but the writing and the production start at 2011, The Snow Queen was in fact a remake of a old cartoon that was made in 1844.
The original story is really good and one of my favorites by Hans Christian Anderson. The snow queen actually follows more of of the original plot than Frozen. I don't actually regard Frozen being a retelling of the original. Also, remember that weird pirate girl on the cover? She probably got that part because she was actually one of the mini arc characters in the orignal. A little robber girl who liked to scare Gerda and a poor reindeer with a knife.
Being a Russian myself, I was quite intrigued by this review. I have always been interested in Russian media being reviewed by foreigners. I've seen The Snow Queen, and, I must admit, I kinda liked it. (Although the best part for me was the song in the end.) It is a well-done adaptation, with a few tweaks (that mostly do work). Now I am not going to compare TSQ with Frozen (I haven't watched Frozen yet), but I think they are not supposed to be compared. They are as much far away from each other as Kaliningrad is from Vladivostok. Frozen is a massive rework which (I assume) is good in its own right. (If you haven't heard the ending song from TSQ, you should. Its English version is called Flashlight and is performed by Prāta Vētra aka BrainStorm.) (Sorry for my English, if there are issues.)
AM I THE ONLY F***ING PERSON WHO HAS ACTUALLY READ THE ORIGINAL "SNOW QUEEN" BY HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON?!?!?!?!?! I READ THAT BOOK IN ABOUT 2011-12 AND DAMN IT WAS GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I recommend all of you read it and enjoy the story. ;)
I'm really glad about the way you went into this and what your conclusion was 😊 Also, the snow queen was also made before frozen. I actually didn't watch frozen for a long time because I was like " ANOTHER snow queen movie? Nah, I've seen that a thousand times already, no thanks" (In Germany frozen was called "die eiskönigin" which is literally the snow (ice) queen )
My grandmother read me the original snow queen [plus a whole bunch of original stories]. & loved it. They actually weren't siblings but later on it was changed to it in many of versions
@@soysource3218 the idea appeared in 1840 but the writing and the production start at 2011, The Snow Queen was in fact a remake of a old cartoon that was made in 1844
I've actually been curious about The Snow Queen since I first heard of it sometime before Frozen came out, and I kinda wanna see it sometime. From what I see here, it's definitely a more faithful adaptation of the original story, albeit with some creative liberties taken, and it does feel like a Disney movie at points, though the original story is very fitting for a Disney movie. Also love the weasel sidekick, she's so cute! On that topic, did you know that long before Frozen was a thing, Disney wanted to make an adaptation of The Snow Queen since the 50's, but it kept going into development hell until it came back into production as Frozen. Personally I'm not really that big of a fan of Frozen (I prefer Tangled much more), I kinda find it overhyped and overrated in my opinion. I mean, Frozen isn't a BAD movie, but I just think Disney has made much better films.
Wait, wait, wait so this is a completely different plot to Frozen that stays closer to the original Hans Christian Andersen story but it was dismissed because of the less than stellar animation and the fact that it was promoted as a Frozen rip off? Disney is shit. Saw all 4 movies. Snow Queen is better. It actually helps and the morals stay with you. Orm the troll was fun and he was a very unique comedic and interesting character. Gerda was amazing too. She makes Elsa and Anna look useless. Frozen 2 was nothing to the 4th Snow Queen movie. Gerda becomes full on dragon lady and helps her friends out. A freaking dragon lady.

The frozen films are completely worthless
I actually saw this movie, and. . . .it's really good.
Like Chad said, for the budget, it's impressive;
Good action, decent pacing, the american voice actors were decent anf there was actually a good character/ villain arc for two "villains." {Ohorm and the Snow Queen}
I enjoyed this better than Frozen. (I had to see it twice in theatres, and I wasn't impressed. Either time. Except for the Snow animation.)
I highly recommend the Down Queen over Frozen. It's cheesy, and there's plenty of "because movie" moments, but . . . . It works.
protagonist? whole point of original story is that kai is a damsel in distress
I suppose it's cuz he was on the box art, and he was the first wizard child shown all grown up in the film

EXACTLY!!!!!!
+A. Leeser It was really good, the story line was good, if they had a bigger budged to make this movie it could become a big thing.
+Feliks Łukasiewicz so true. not everyone can be a multi-billion dollar franchise.

WAIT! YOU KNOW ABOUT GUNDAMS?!?!?!?
YEEZZZZZ!!!
Maybe but... it will take TO LOONNNGGGGG
+ZimBoyyyy it doesn't have to be a gundam....
"The Snow Queen was a nice girl who was exiled for her magic usage and, through her isolation, became the bitter Snow Queen."
That's exactly what I thought they'd do to Elsa, turn her into a Scandinavian Morgan Le Fay, but they obviously didn't and I still think it was a missed opportunity.
It's more like "Once upon a time, in a fictional land inspired by Norway . . ."
It's a good idea but having a character not really be evil is pretty good too.
Her original self was like that so it wasn't as complex :)
I don't need them, I'm stronger than all of them."
It was her villain song... or were you not creeped out by the lack of a villain song in Frozen?
No I disagree with the Pirates being Autumn and The King being Summer, in this cartoon you can... see Irma (The Snow Queen) = Winter
The Lady from the Greenhouse = Spring
The King and his two kids = Autumn
The Pirates = They only Summer left.
Honestly, I liked The Snow Queen more than Frozen. I like how highly stylized it is, and everything seems to fit well together.
I completely agree, It is a much better adaptation to the original book turned ballet then frozen. I ecspecialy enjoy that Kai is kidnapped just like the book.
to each their own.
I haven't seen the movie yet, but it probably is a lot better than the Disney version.
+cookiechi personally, I prefer the 1957 Soviet animated version of "The Snow Queen"
I liked Snow Queen and Frozen. They both have different qualities that make them both the best movie that you can't really compare eachther.
me too I loved them

My best friend actually introduced me to the Snow Queen movie, and not in your average "pull up Netflix and watch it" style. She convinced our teacher to show the movie to the whole class! (That teacher WAS awesome 😊)

Oh ok
Actually, the snow queen was made before frozen. Frozen was actually having legal troubles because of it.
Them Russians prolly were like: "dem damn Disney 'muricans tryin to steal our profit"
+The Toontastic Toon ha true though that movie wasnt that bad though i wasnt exactly paying attention to it when i watched it and the second movie was a lot better than the first😜
+The Toontastic Toon The hilarious part is that Frozen was stuck in development hell for over 60 years.
60 years? Lol rip Disney
Sounds like it follows the actual original storyline much more.
At first when he said Snow Queen was really good. I didn't believe him at all. But now
I wanna buy it so badly
Its on netflix ;)

Yeah, me too, I honestly thought it was going to go in the way of a drunk joke.
Like he drinks the soda vodka mix, watches the movie, and says, "That was pretty good."
Then the skeleton guy goes like, "No, no, you're drunk, watch it again while being sober."
Rewatches the movie sober: "Oh Jesus! What is this crap?"
the snow queen is way more magical than Frozen although they have different story build up. But in my taste i prefer the Snow queen since it's way more adventurous and magical :)
The story Snow Queen is much better than Frozen.
It is!

I'm glad you got around to watching The Snow Queen- easily one of my favourite non-disney animated films!
We oftentimes praise the twist more than the base to the point that the base becomes the twist....
so what about Snow Queen animated movie (1957) ?
@@tandaev The what now?
@@Ninetails2000 it’s an older adaptation of the snow Queen. You know English right?
First the Little Mermaid now the Snow Queen, poor Andersen, Disney never gave him a break
They did a great job with the story
The original storyboards of Frozen had Elsa being pretty much the Snow Queen in this movie.
Who wants a higher quality english remake of the snow queen?

I remember reading The Snow Queen (the original story) when I was about 8 years old. Hearing your basic summary of the film adaptation is bringing back a lot of memories. It sounds like it stays pretty true to the Hans Christian Andersen classic.
"...and her isolation"
more like ice-olation
right?
Just watched The Snow Queen and its awesome!!! Lip syncing is quite bad but its fine to watch.
It's to be expected, the original is from russia.

And I was amazed.
I'm glad someone like you could share the same feelings in a video touching more people :)
Keep on with your good videos ! (And please draw the 10-years-later Grenda from Gravity Falls
Is it just me, or does "The Snow Queen" seem like "Percy Jackson", "Narnia" and "Frozen" all in one?
And Star Wars
+Maddie Norton seriously? NO WHERE near star wars.
The Cronicles of Narnia is a compilation of traditional folk stories all in one universe (very nicely done) but its nothing new. The White Witch is clearly inspired by the Snow Queen.
+0MissNemo0 actually the witch was inspired more by the devil. Like aslan was inspired by God.
Maybe her psicological profile, but last time I checked the biblical Devil didnt look like a woman with ice-bending powers

Lion Witch and the Wardrobe music
Nostalgia overload, thank you for that. :)
Glad I wasn't the only one that noticed.
I honestly thought it was a knockoff of Frozen too but I like it better than Frozen.
Maybe it was vice versa , but it doesnt matter. We must stick with our Disney and put more sanctions on ruskies
Peliks Payy Same
Weird I thought that "Frozen" was a knock off of "The Snow Queen" since I saw "The Snow Queen" first. But then I noticed that they were completely different so I stopped comparing them.
Also it looks like Snow Queen has more speaking roles for women than even Frozen has which is a plus.

I love the story of the snow Queen...which is why when Frozen came out, I knew it would be different and frankly I like Frozen as it is... Frozen. It's not the Snow Queen and it never will be. I think of it as two different entities because they are two different stories.
To me it feels more like Frozen was "inspired" by the snow queen rather than based off the story.
I prefer all original stories too :)
"Rest in peace, nobody cares"

I really liked the anime version of The Snow Queen. It was really well done and very cute, with good music. I got excited hearing Kai and Gerda in this, I might have to give it a watch

why is kai so passive? because he is also passive in the original story ^^ gerda is always the main protagonist in the story :D kai is the "damsel in distress" xD
Pff. XD I now love that aspect of it now.
Poor Anna.
@@dionysos46what?😅
I'd honestly rather watch this than Frozen. Don't get me wrong, Frozen isn't bad. It's just... Boring.
me too. I will watch this rather than frozen 11 out of 10 times better.true frozen is boring and a little too girly. after all i am a boy.
I wholeheartedly agree; Frozen was extremely boring, in my opinion. It dragged on because it was so boring. The Snow Queen seems like a legit film.
+TheAkwarium It was "Let it Go" that made them change the plot.
...we also learn that Kai is dead. Rest in peace, nobody cares! 😂😂😂
My biggest problem with Frozen is how much it changed from the source material. I might have liked it more if I hadn't read The Snow Queen first. :P
IDK but I prefer ice queen

I feel like I was the only one who watched Snow Queen around before frozen came out and actually enjoyed it. It had a very good plot story. I never knew until now that frozen and snow queen was similar through the covers. It was kind of frustrating when people called it a frozen rip off. The movies are very different in good ways.
the animation quality is pretty good :D
This is only the second video I've seen of your's, and the fact that you mentioned Gundam at the end made me like you even more.

Hmm, that was actually a very interesting take on the original fairy tale, and I really like how they incorporated the random encounters from the book, such as the palace and the bandit queen, although the way those encounters play out are kinda different. Also, this version actually has a bloody mirror in it!
The movie stuck really close to the actual fable... which is really good.

Its English version is called Flashlight and is performed by Prāta Vētra aka BrainStorm.)
(Sorry for my English, if there are issues.)
OMG, an animated movie about a girl protagonist trying to save her brother? No prince, no weddings, no falling in love clichés? That's brilliant!
The Russian Snow Queen movie is more BASED in the ORIGINAL STORY. Frozen came one year later; but a sisterhood theme.
AM I THE ONLY F***ING PERSON WHO HAS ACTUALLY READ THE ORIGINAL "SNOW QUEEN" BY HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON?!?!?!?!?! I READ THAT BOOK IN ABOUT 2011-12 AND DAMN IT WAS GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I recommend all of you read it and enjoy the story. ;)
I'm fluent in Russian and I genuinely wanna watch the original version rn
I'm really glad about the way you went into this and what your conclusion was 😊
Also, the snow queen was also made before frozen. I actually didn't watch frozen for a long time because I was like " ANOTHER snow queen movie? Nah, I've seen that a thousand times already, no thanks" (In Germany frozen was called "die eiskönigin" which is literally the snow (ice) queen )
Snow Queen is really sweet and adventurous and bittersweet all wrapped into one. I like it more than Frozen for sure.
I watched this on netflix. I loved it, and still love it.
Yes?)
2:19 wow, for a second there I thought I was watching JonTron

I loved this video! Make more knock-off comparisons! :D
+Lydia Ann there will be plenty more! question is... which one next!
+LewToons I'd really love you to review Hoodwinked. :)
+LewToons I was going to request the same thing! I'd like to see you compare Lion King and it's supposed rip off like you did in this video.
+LewToons there is second part of snow queen
+LewToons have you done lion and the King? (Yes Disney copyrighted wallpaper but not lion and the King)😆
I LOVE The Snow Queen which is why I decided to watch it, and this is a great video.
My grandmother read me the original snow queen [plus a whole bunch of original stories]. & loved it. They actually weren't siblings but later on it was changed to it in many of versions
I beg to differ. The Soviet snow Queen is one of the best.
the snow queen came out a year before frozen, so frozen is a snow queen knockoff.
Frozen has been in the making for 70 YEARS!
So not really a ripoff.
Frozen Forever!
@@soysource3218 the idea appeared in 1840 but the writing and the production start at 2011, The Snow Queen was in fact a remake of a old cartoon that was made in 1844
the Narnia music was super distracting for me tbh
I love this story. I had a VHS tape with a 1995 animated version of the story. I used to watch it all the time.
The one that made his head explode is actually a good adaptation with a very relatable villain.
