How to thread pipe to make pipe clamps

- I recently purchased some pipe clamp heads from China, and I needed to thread 3/4" pipe to complete the clamps. This video covers how I did it using the cheapest pipe threader purchased from Amazon.

It wasn't planned to be doing the same thing at the same time, just a happy coincidence. I need my clamps for a big run of cutting boards. I have no idea what Rob is doing. He is a man of mystery.

Glad I found this video. Explains why my effort a few years ago were so hard. I may not have been breaking the chips....Will be more confident next time.

I ended up buying a threader myself earlier this year. I love my pipe clamps. And you know what they say? 'You can never have too many clamps'
I can see myself buying more pipe clamp heads to make more and more. Works out pretty cheap now that I am setup to do it.

Hi Kuffy, as Rob Trautvetter from Takami Woodshop has said these clamps are made to go on black pipe, black pipe walls are thicker so the pipe doesn't collapse when you cut the tread allowing you to cut longer threads, gal pipes these days are only used for hand rails etc, so only have thin walls, hope this helps if you ever need to make more clamps, side note black pipe don't bend as much when you clap up as well, love your work keep it up
Thanks mate. I don't know much about the pipe. The gal pipe I used had 2.7mm thick walls. They had thinner walled stuff available, but I figured thicker was better and only cost an extra dollar or so per 6.5m length.
I don't know how things are in Oz and NZ, but here in the US, You can get both black iron (steel actually) pipe and galvanized pipe in the same thickness, schedule 40.
I’ve actually never seen that done, so that was cool. I’m also thankful that I have access to cheap threaded rod at the local home center. :)
The threaded pipe at my hardware store seemed pretty expensive before I tried to cut my own threads. Now it seems kinda cheap 😂
@@kuffyswoodwork I do what Bryan does and purchase black pipe. They cut it and thread it for free.

You look like an expert for only doing it the few times you said you did it. I don’t know if I overdo it, but I do a few pulls before releasing the chips. It takes me longer but I’ve never had a fail yet.
And yes, I’m an expert too seeing how I’ve probably done no more than 10 of these 😂

Yeah, I found breaking the chips to be very important. Without breaking them, they would curl over and try to be cut twice which just stops me dead in my tracks.

I think all up, I am going to break even doing it myself as opposed with buying pre-threaded pipe from Bunnies. But next time I need to make some threaded pipe, it will be super duper cheep :D Cya tomorrow.

These clamps will be the star of my next video which I probably should get cracking on sooner rather than later.
I don't normally give advice on u-tube projects because you guy's are much smarter than I am. But this time I think it might be helpful. Try cutting the threads on a horizontal axis instead of vertical. That should help with the cutting fluid draining down onto your Vice. Also it should prevent the handle from slipping off so much, and it may stop the cutter from digging into the pipe and causing it to collapse. Anyway, it would be worth trying I think.
Thanks mate. What you suggest would be better. The only reason I am holding the pipe vertically is because my bench vice gets a much better grip on it this way.

Great video Kuffy and I think you can now claim expert status after 7 and definitely once you finish the 16 :-)). I think you have a good technique there. I always work on the length of thread being equal to the diameter of the thread. Video is deceptive, but I reckon you are pretty close to that in the amount of thread you cut so the clamps should be good for action. Thanks again.
The length of thread was probably only about 20mm. The pipe O'D is 26.7mm. It'll likely be close enough for the clamps. I wouldn't pay a gas fitter one cent to install pipes like that for me though :D
just wondering, do you really need ear protection for cutting larger threads?
No I don't need hearing protection for this task. I wear hearing protection for 9-12hrs a day, it just feels wrong without it

you're obviously in the UK or somewhere but you can probably get 3/4 in black pipe in various lengths that's already threaded on the ends, its standard here in the states for gas lines and the like.
I'm in Australia. I can buy threaded pipe easily. It would have cost me an extra 200bux

hi thanks .i have been going from pilar to post to source these pipes.They are not available in B and Q or in screwfix.Finally i approached Scaffolding company where they have only standard diameter 483mm which is big for a bessey clamp.Can you tell where you got your pipe .
i think the bessey has a diameter of 29.3mm .anyhelp is wecome

It's a standard product. Look for '3/4" black pipe".
Hi you need to put the pipe in horizontally to stop it falling off just a thought as that is how you thread black pipe

I think I have the some Chinese clamps. I did the exact same thing and bought the pipe cutter. The only problem I had is I had to sharpen the edges of the plates so they would bite in the pole. It also may have been because I was making 1.5m pole clamps so perhaps the deflection of the pipes was making it slip.
I did give the cutters a sharpen before this video. I should have filmed it, or at least spoken about it in the video. I only just remembered that I did it when you spoke of sharpening yours. I'm not entirely convinced the sharpening improved anything, but it worked so I guess it was worthwhile.
Products from VaChina have made a turnaround and that's great
I think with Chinese imports, you get exactly what you pay for. If you pay a good price, you get good quality. If you pay low, you get low quality. Seems fair to me.
HEy Kuffy, you should be able to adjust the teeth for a lighter cut then move them in to the finish size that you want
I thought of this before I had even received the pipe threader. But on this cheap threader, there is no adjustment of the cutters. There is a steel plate on top of the die which slightly cups around the top outer edges of the cutters. That is how the cutters are set to maximum diameter. I possibly could make the diameter smaller, if they don't shift in use. But making things smaller would make things 100times worse :D

Never knew about pipe threaders. Are they suitable for making large timber screws?
I don't think they would be suitable for timber threads. The thread pitch is pretty fine, even if it is a coarse metal thread.

T bar sash clamps are much much stronger than pipe clamps. Pipe clamps are generally pretty weak and cumbersome to use, but they are cheap and therefore popular.

That's the one I purchased, but it is no longer available. I imagine it is the same as many of the other offerings on Amazon when you search for 'pipe threader'.
A bit different to Robs brute horsepower method but is it really worth doing? I find the threaded pipe from Bunnings isn’t prohibitively expensive, but I only have 4 pipe clamps so maybe that’s why.
I had two Weetbix for brekkie that day and that is more power than one man can handle. Next time I'll just have a cup of coffee and a McMuffin 🤣
It probably isn't worth doing. I hadn't even planned on threading the pipe myself until Rob suggested it, and then I ran the numbers and it works out slightly cheaper doing it myself by a few dollars. But now I'll be able to fix broken pipe if I ever over clamp and crush or shear the ends of the pipes.
Just remember an expert is a drip under pressure

No, it is 3/4" galvanised steel pipe
Worth mentioning that with tapered pipe thread you do not want to want to overthread these otherwise you will wind up with an extremely loose tolerance fit. Less is more with npt

if i rem rightly 2 turns then back etc etc plenty of lube oh most pipe threaders make a tapered thread on the pipe hence u cant go any further down the pipe a tepered thread makes for a better seal when joining pipes etc.if u want to go down further ull have to get a die to suit.
The die I have does put a tapered thread on the pipe. I thought I would have been able to keep going further and the first 3/4" of the thread would be tapered, while the rest would end up being straight. But it does get very very hard once the full die is engaged.
Nice video. You have to take it slow. I worked in a machine shop long ago and they had a power threader. It was soooo fun to use!!!!!
What we should really be talikng about is how the "industry" rapes us in the you know what for simple tools like clamps. Cost Waaaaaaay more than they should!

Yes the threads come in different sizes. The threader kit that I have had 3/8", 1/2", 3/4", 1" and 1 1/4". My pipe clamps use 3/4" pipe, but you can also get 1" pipe clamps which use 1" pipe.
Hi I have the same pipe clamp and I had to buy 3/4" pipe but my clamps will not clamp up any idea's
Have you threaded the pipe clamps onto the pipe? If so, is the rear pipe clamp slipping backwards when you apply pressure? Slipping backwards can occur when the 3 or 4 metal plates haven't engaged the pipe properly, instead they get caught on the cheap pipe clamp castings. A little jiggle of the metal plates, and then they should bite and prevent slipping.

Bought a bunch of pipe clamps thinking "This'll be a cheap way to build a stock of clamps". Looked for pipe.... turns out 3/4" Black iron pipe is not in common use here and is a super expensive boutique product. 3/4" conduit probably has the wrong thread and not sure it's thick enough. Ok I'll thread my own... pipe threaders are mad expensive! If any woodworkers in Ireland or UK have a tip on where to get cheap pipe I'd love to know!

Put your pipe horizontally and a box on the floor and the chips and oil will fall into the box!
I would have liked to be able to do that. The reason I didn't hold the pipe horizontally was because my vice is a piece of junk which racks far too much to apply any decent pressure to resist the pipe from turning in the vice.
Use more oil you'll be able to thread more

@@kuffyswoodwork I had to use maths - I've lost two adjacent cutters so had to measure the distance between centres of the two remaining adjacent cutters at the narrow end of the tapers to figure this out - a bit inaccurate. It measured 18.25mm i.e. the length of one of the sides of an imaginary square - to figure out the diagonal of the square - also the diameter of a circle that would contain said square - multiply the length of the square's side by the square root of 2. Comes to 25.8mm - that is equal therefore to the diameter of the thread vally at the narrow end. The OD of the pipe is 26.7, the wall is 2.7mm - so 26.7 - 25.8 = 0.9mm so I've reduced my wall down from 2.7 to 1.8 and tried to cut a longer thread (because like you I wanted more) - at this point I've run over a thick chip and this has forced the now weaker narrower wall to bend inwards thus deforming the wall so that it's now close to or wider than 25.8 at the apex of the deformation - it is also more triangular in shape and therefore stronger so as the next cutter reaches it it requires a lot more force to carry on the cut - there is no room for it to pass though even if it could cut right through and something had to give- either the pipe had to collapse in on itself even more or the casting has to give way - in my case I think a bit of both happened . You could say I ruined it by pushing on but I reckon once the casting was cracked it was doomed. This is just a theory. I would love to have spares that I could try this out on to know for sure. Why's the camera not running when you need it? I've ordered a replacement.
@@TakamiWoodshop That's pretty much what I suspected. I was able to see and feel when the pipe had slightly crushed. If we keep going at that point, either the pipe crushes enough to get out of the cutters way, or the die housing explodes.

Nah, it's not that loud. I just use ear muffs for everything in the work shop. It costs me nothing to put them on and keep them on.
