    Great video. This video comes as I have just 10x’d my own collecting net by moving from just what I have left for Aaron and Spahn playing day cards (< 200 cards) to targeting the nearly 2k graded Maddux cards in his psa master set. Brian, happy to be your outlet for PSA 10’s. :) Thank you Brian and Allen over at Collecting Maddux for reinvigorating my hobby. ;)

      Awesome! Nice to see your focus zeroing in on Maddux - I approve 💯!
      Yeah, if you’re looking for 10s, I don’t have too many. I tend to list and sell them on eBay pretty soon after I get them. I do have a ‘97 Finest Gold refractor PSA 10 that I’m looking to downgrade to an 8 or 9, so if I can pick up a nice raw copy, I would gladly sell you my 10!

    I wish my brothers appreciated collecting as much as you guys do. What a treat to be able to take the journey together (on whichever axis you prefer - I’m on Z, I think?!?). I look forward to many more chats like this! Thanks Iconic and Prof. High Pop!

      Thanks, Mookie! Sometimes I’m a little sad that my boys don’t collect at all, but my daughter likes Pokémon, so that’s a start! And it’s pretty great to still be able to share pickups with my brother and my dad!

    Really fantastic conversation guys! This is a great listen because both of you not only have a great knowledge of cardboard, but also a very systematic and philosophical collecting plan! Although, as was mentioned we all go off the rails every now and then. That’s pretty much where my collection is all the time. I collect what I like, but as Al mentioned I to like A LOT of things. Haha I really envy Al’s approach to collecting horizontally and the top 100 list is a great way to do that. Equally, Brian I really appreciate your love and focus on 80s and 90s because that is when I started collecting as well and the nostalgia of all the greats from the 90s always brings make great memories. I look forward to all future episodes and topics. Well done, gentleman!

      I was thinking the exact same thing! There’s no shortage of vintage collecting channels and ultra-modern too, but 90s feels kind of like a dead zone for some reason. You’ve got some killer Pedro cards there, buddy!! The PMG and Crusade Red are no joke!

    Great video boys. A bit lengthy but understandable since it was your first duo bro video. Collecting MLB cards is a fun and interesting hobby. In my case, I was a completist and went a bit overboard collecting 9,500 different Barry Bonds pieces over a period of 35 years. I am glad you are both enjoying collecting MLB cards and that you are not following my footsteps as a completist. It will take me many years to liquidate my collection but it has been fun and is keeping me occupied in my retirement years. It was fun collecting cards with both of you as you were growing up. I only starting collecting cards because you boys got me started.
    Enjoy the hobby but don’t let it take over your lives as it did with me. I am proud of you both. Love, Dad

    Brian, I was listening to this and appreciate the conversation on my collecting journey. As said- you do go from a long list to a narrow list, while collecting one player. And the narrow list has some very heavy hitters on it. It’s a great discussion and definitely something I probably should have discussed more on my channel. Love this series overall, you guys obviously have a built in chemistry, that adds to the show! Great first episode!

    Brian and Alan, there are so many excellent thoughts in this video for collectors to consider as they contemplate honing and morphing their collecting focus! I think of vertical collecting as the different years (even though "time" tends to be thought of as an input or independent variable and hence tends to be represented by the horizontal axis when dealing with functions of a single input variable) and then horizontal collecting as the sets from those years. For example, all 1953 Topps cards are from the same year and so are on the same horizontal level. However, I see Alan was using vertical and horizontal collecting to mean something different, which is totally fine, but I would love to hear you guys dig further into the topic of vertical versus horizontal collecting! Brian, just for you, I have calculated the expected benefit to a collector who is considering watching this most excellent video: (100% probability of beneficial impact)*31 (in honor of Maddux!) + (0% probability of detrimental impact)*Pi (just because it is probably the most popular transcendental number!) = 31! (or even 31-factorial!) 😊👊 Take care, my collecting brothers!

    • @HighPopProfessor
      @HighPopProfessor  4 місяці тому +1

      Haha! Thank you for the wondrous expected value equation! Well, I know my math students sometimes forget which is the vertical and horizontal axis, and however we choose to define that as a hobby, it represents two different dimensions that frequently get targeted as potential “focus” points. I think of time on the horizontal axis, so a collection like a player run of Nolan Ryan spans a large breadth horizontally, but almost no depth vertically - like a histogram or bar graph that totals only one card for each year.
      I’m glad you found the conversation thought provoking and I know we are looking forward to putting out more episodes every week or two!
      Thanks for watching, Adam!

      Skaght, you’re a trooper (for putting up with all that) and a legend! Your journey to get your Cy Young card is legendary. Your artwork is incredible, and I am curious what you would charge for a Greg Maddux piece. In any case, thanks for watching, and for better or for worse, every time I now think of Jim Thome, I can only think of you. 😂

    Iconic Bros. Smash Brothers. Brother's Duo. I like it. Glad to be here for the first episode of many. Interesting to learning more about both of your collecting styles, the similarities and differences. There really is something for everyone in the hobby. From the 1880's to 2020's....and everything in between. The Ripken and Wagner, is an interesting thought. As an Orioles fan, I like both Ripken and... Gunnar Henderson, but 'ultra' modern is just, a smaller portion of what I truly enjoy and like to do . Atm.
    The wider vs. narrow approach to the hobby is also taken into consideration. Yep. This ties in to the quality vs. quantity. And both is fine. Some of us collectors want a lot of cards or memorabilia, but also want those items to be qualtity which means something different to each collector but, a similar idea. Has value. Whether that is financial, nostalgia, or both.
    I think when it comes to the hobby, our interests are likely to change. What you enjoy to collect today. Might be different tomorrow.
    Great first episode. Here's to part 2 to be continued. I am curious which Whitey Ford card, Al, decided to go for!

      Keep some of the Duke Snider's. Casper's favorite baseball player. ☺But yes. No such thing as too many KGJ autos. I would love to have that ''problem''!

    • @HighPopProfessor
      @HighPopProfessor  4 місяці тому

      It’s true - interests may change over the course of everyone’s collecting journey. In fact, they probably will change multiple times, and that’s perfectly fine. But when there’s a shift, it’s something that needs to be done with intentionality and thought through carefully before diving in head first.
      So, let’s say for example that tomorrow you decide that you want to collect Big Hurt cards. Then before beginning to acquire hundreds upon hundreds, you should probably try to narrow that down a bit… do you want ALL of them??? Only from a certain span of years? Only playing days cards? Only in a White Sox uniform? Autographs too? Base cards? Subsets? Inserts only? Numbered / rare cards? Not to mention, what kind of realistic budget are you thinking? Should you sell off a side PC or maybe just trim the bonsai a little in a few spots to free up some hobby dollars to allow yourself to expand to this new passion project? These are all considerations that should probably be decided before mindlessly acquiring cards for a new collecting direction.
      Thanks for watching!

      @@HighPopProfessor I like to or at least try to collect with a purpose. What has meaning to me, however, will not necessarily be the same to you or anyone else even , when some of us collectors do like the same player or players. I would say, though trying to minimize the being influenced part is essential to, when it comes to the collection you want to collect. Since you're the one collecting for you. For myself, I just want to have fun. There are plenty of rabbit holes and peaks and valleys as well along the way. If it doesn't become fun. Then I won't be here. But don't forsee it happening even if there are certain aspects of the hobby which I am not a fan of. Can collect cards with out the grade or buy the grade, but really buying the card because it appeals to you.

    It’s funny because I’m kinda like a blend of the both of you. The focus on hall of fame autographs was #1 for 15 years until I jumped into late 90’s and decided on Maddux these last 5 years or so.
    Does dad still super collect bonds?
    Great topic! By the way sweet master craftsman sample.

    • @HighPopProfessor
      @HighPopProfessor  4 місяці тому

      That’s cool that you blend both collecting styles. It’s neat, because there’s no “correct” way of doing any of this, but it’s fun and interesting to learn about different collectors’ approaches to the same fun hobby. Plus, by hearing about others’ experiences, we can reflect and help ourselves clarify our own hobby focuses.
      Our dad has been slowly selling off the majority of his collection, but still has a very large amount of it. He has probably sent about 200 cards to PSA over the past year and has been listing some of his heavy hitters first. He still collects Bonds, but has actually shifted his focus to only promo cards and error cards. He has the most unbelievable error card collection that would make your eyes pop out. Some of those pieces are truly astounding and absolutely unique. I mentioned before that I want to do an interview with him and also showcase his Barry Bonds error card collection, because it’s an unbelievable assemblage of craziness that you really have to see to believe.
      Yeah, I knew about the Donruss executive proof “XXXX” cards, so I figured I should probably have at least one represented in my collection.
      Here’s a question - do you happen to have any of the 96 Pinnacle Aficionado First Pitch Preview cards? Especially for Maddux or Bonds? I don’t have any myself. People don’t seem to know about them, but they are TOUGH! Baseballcard pedia has a great write up about them and how they came about, but there’s not a stated print run for the entire set.
