  • The world of vintage Heuer is a wonderful and varied one - there's good reason the brand can lay claim to numerous truly iconic watches, after all. For this year's LVMH Watch Week, TAG Heuer is paying tribute to yet another beloved model from the past, rendered in the fabulous Glassbox shape introduced last year. The TAG Heuer Carrera Dato and its dial layout will be immediately recognisable to lovers of all things Heuer, originating in the 1968 Dato 45 "Cyclops", with this modern teal reinterpretation making it seem like a natural evolution of the original.

    This watch is so freaking cool!! The glass box is mesmerizing in person and with this color and dial layout is so awesomely weird.

    I love that TAG are putting "TAG Heuer" on the dial and not just "Heuer". I used to be one of those wowsers who insisted that they drop the "TAG" from anything remotely vintage-y, probably because I was influenced by some other wowser saying it. But I've come around. The only way to establish "TAG" as standing for good things is to include it on good watches. Perceptions change. Never again should TAG Heuer cut their name in half. They need to put "TAG Heuer" on everything, be proud and stand strong. And really the name is actually quite cool - Techniques d'Avant Garde. I like it. Onwards and upwards for TAG Heuer!

    Ever since I got into TAG, I couldn't really pull the trigger anywhere else. Started with my Aquaracer, then Skipper... and ever since then, I keep seeing so many good ones from TAG, notably after glassbox... Gotta stop myself before I go bankrupt lmao

    Tag is coming out with so many great watches. New twists, homages, and just overall thoughtfulness to adding models. Not sure why they get so much hate in the US. I do enjoy my AquaRacer. I guess the only problem with Tag now is their prices. Some of their models are way too much, that I’d opt for an Omega.

      They've definitely followed the trend of rising RRPs, though they've still got some excellent options at the lower end of their offering. The Solargraph is a watch I truly enjoy

    I’m back on board with TAG. My Carrera and Monaco have sat in drawers for years but I believe a resurgence is imminent. Thinking of upgrading both to current models. The blue face Monaco with the BA0644 bracelet works really well IMHO. 👍

    It's worth noting that the original Dato sported a cam-actuated Landeron movement, a step down from the Valjoux column-wheel movements in the other Carrera models. When these were new, they were probably priced accordingly lower, which is certainly not the case today.

    • @BornaBosnjak
      @BornaBosnjak 6 місяців тому

    I agree 100% they should have used the old Heuer logo, that’s a big mistake / oversight especially since it is a modern retro watch and freaking expensive .Personally I would have made it 40 mm , 39 is a bit too small for me. I just think 40 mm is the perfect size for most men but I guess 1 mm is not a big drama. The price though, ouch almost ten grand Aussie , that’s dear , very , very expensive.indeed.

    • @BornaBosnjak
      @BornaBosnjak 6 місяців тому

      This 39mm wears quite large, and going any bigger would stray too close to the 42mm Porsche Glassbox and regular 42mm Carrera in my opinion. With the trend of smaller watches slowly coming back in, I'm personally thrilled they chose to keep the size under 40 - I'd honestly be happy with a 36 akin to vintage Carreras

    • @theoverlord1925
      @theoverlord1925 6 місяців тому +1

      Fair enough with the 39 mm, like I said 1 mm is not a big drama . What about the thickness ? Are you happy with that ? I understand it’s an automatic chronograph movement but with all the resources , technology and experience they have, surely they could have made it a bit thinner And the price, why are most Swiss watch manufacturers so greedy when it comes to price? Wouldn’t it be better to sell more units at a lower price then less at much higher price ? I just feel that it way too much for what you are getting . I do like it overall though ,except the logo, thickness and price ; but I would not buy one .

    Hating TAG Heuer is so lame. There’s so many watches of good tastes from many years prior as well. Many amazing Carrera chrono’s before this glassbox, this is by no means the first well executed Carrera reissue. Cv2113 being one of my personal favorites. Not to mention the link, have you tried that bracelet? I’m going to assume no. Not a lot of people may love the design, but it is undeniably one of the best bracelets in luxury watches plus a lot of cool older Chronograph models of the link as well. If you hate TAG Heuer I generally just assume you’re not well researched on the brand. Especially considering second hand/grey marker prices. Some of the coolest chronographs that can be had as low as $700-$2000 for an early link chrono to Carrera.

      I'd normally agree as non-colour-matched date wheels are a bit of a pet peeve. But this watch is kind of all about that date, so I don't mind that it sticks out a little - they did put a nice frame around the window.

      I read elsewhere in this thread they are asking 10k. That’s steep. That said, far more more beautiful than any chronograph Tudor is offering. That said, the layout is as mentioned here, not for everyone.
      As for COSC or no COSC, -meh. I have a METAS Omega, that’s more impressive a spec than COSC. That said, my two best watches are neither COSC or METAS certified. One is an El Primer, the other a Frand Seiko. Both are more accurate than my Omega, though that’s not a big issue for me. If accuracy is your primary concern, a lowly SW200 can easily be regulated to well within COSC specs and a thousand bucks can deliver that, it simply won’t be promised.

    • @BornaBosnjak
      @BornaBosnjak 6 місяців тому +2

      The movement is essentially an upgraded Heuer 02, with extra power reserve and bi-directional winding, so a definite upgrade in that regard. The whole COSC debate - I can see your point, though I'm not sure it'd sway my purchasing decision. Between this and a Tudor chrono, I'd rather go for the Heuer considering it's much slimmer.
