India - Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, 2006 (Trailer)

- This is a trailer only ... the full 41 minute video was available on Sellfy as a chargeable item. However, I have decided to release the second part through You Tube and will, in all probability, release the full Part 1 on You Tube eventually. Please watch this space !!
We follow a 2006 chartered steam train from Siliguri (after a brief visit to Jalpaiguri) to the terminus in Darjeeling, 48 miles away and 2100 metres (6890 feet) higher in the Himalayan foothills. Part 1 covers the journey from Siliguri to Tindharia, where the company's workshops are based. The DHR 2ft gauge line is seen crossing the 5ft 6in gauge Indian Railways mainline. There follows a lengthy section of street running before the railway commences its climb into the mountains. During the steepest part of the climb, there are a number of loops (spirals) and reverses (zig-zags) in order to gain altitude in a short distance. Later on the journey to Darjeeling, there is some spectacular street running right through the middle of village shopping streets. These will feature in Part 2 of the video. The line became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
This is absolutely fascinating! Thanks for sharing this great video.
My pleasure. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Another such excellent train is in Ooty, The Nilgris, Tamilnadu. Breath taking scenery during the entire five hours of journey.
Yes, I know it. There were several narrow gauge railways built to serve the hill stations. Andy
Proud to be born in Darjeeling ...having seen this from my childhood ..it still amaazes me how these engines carry the bogies in such steeper lines
A great privilege for you. Andy

It really is an amazing railway. There are numerous spirals and z reverses. It needs saving urgently .... it's on the brink right now. Andy
The three little girls at 1:39 have me grinning still. Oh, nice railway vid, too. I was especially interested in the zig-zag operation. I plan to look for the full length video.
Thanks.
This is just a very brief snippet of what I have on video. I really must get it all uploaded some time. India is wonderful !

They're doing a great job to keep this line running under very difficult circumstances ...... Andy
Phantastic railway-line and phantastic video.
Thank you very much ...... Andy
GREAT .GOD'S GIFT FOR INDIANS
It's a fabulous railway but, sadly, struggling to survive right now because of a lack of visitors. Get out there everyone!
It's not so much the lack of visitors as the lack of maintaining the famous old Hill Cart Road along side which the World Heritage railway track and train runs, which gets ravaged by landslides, mudslides and deforestation during the monsoon rains, needless to mention the waste and cellophane plastic clogging the once beautiful streamlets and waterfalls. Civic sense is lacking.
Proud of my hometown Darjeeling

This train is really super cool
It's a great 50 mile journey up into the Himalayan foothills ..... Andy
I took this train up to Darjeeling in 1985,seating on the foot board of the bogey next to the engine, watched the operating staff very closely, all of whom we're Nepalese men, very energetic & jovial. Now diesel locomotive has replaced the steam engine, yet the journey is very charming if one has time to watch the meandering sojurn through the mountains.
There were diesels operating many of the regular service trains when I recorded this in 2006. It's to be hoped, though, that a fleet of steam locos will be kept operable for the sake of India's heritage. In reality the diesels are almost as bad polluters as the steam locos, however, the pollution isn't as visible as the particulates from a steam loco. They are still destroying our climate though ..... Andy
@@AndyDandanFisherSteam
At present the steam engines are only operational for joy ride service. Between Darjeeling and Ghum Station via Batasia loop. Pulling Maximum of 3 carriage depending on the number of ticket sold.
There are 2 heritage joy ride service per day. One in the morning and one in the afternoon. Though often the evening service gets cancelled due to rain, visibility or poor weather conditions.
Steam loco service is no longer operational for the entire route. Though Indian Railways official press release states that for movie production, one may apply for booking an entire train and if logistically possible on given dates, Indian Railways may provide the service with steam loco.
All steam engines are now located at Darjeeling steam loco shade. Loco Shade is right beside the station at Darjeeling, right on the main road. Many locos are getting cannibalized to keep few alive for the joy ride service. It's a hearth breaking scene to watch them in such tear down condition.
Steam Loco fleet are now well over 125+ years old but those which are on active service, they are just mesmerizing to watch.
Rode the heritage joy ride service few weeks back. Wish they had kept at least one running between NJP (Siliguri) and Darjeeling. However, local Railway staff says, it's better this way. At least this smaller joy ride duty would keep the steam service alive for many more years by extending the life span of the remaining engines.
Thanks.

That's indeed a marvellous part of engineering!! zigzag climbing.. in fact the Peruvian Railways also have the same system of climbing up the Andes.
I'm sorry to sound like a colonialist ... but built by the British, of course !!

now I get it, instead of making turns which are impossible it backs up and climbs zig zag .... smart system, really ...
Of course it's a smart system .... built by the British ;-))
well instead of using a complicated geared track system like the trains in the Swiss Alps, they sort of zig zag up and down the step hill, how much is its altitude ?
The railway climbs to over 2000 metres.
it's a lot ... wow !
Hi. The highest railway station is Ghoom, which is also termed as the highest railway station in the world at 2450 meters. After Ghoom, the line climbs down to around 2100 meters at Darjeeling

Andy and Dandan Fisher The name of the railway is The Nilgiri mountain railways
@@krishnaiyer27 I know the railway but haven't visited yet .... Andy
@@AndyDandanFisherSteam @krishnan , The NMR (Nilgiri Mountain Railways) runs a "toy train" that is lugged with a steam engine from Metupalayam to Coonoor then from Coonoor to Ooty the same with a diesel engine. The steam engine is fueled with furnace oil burner but that's a turn off for me because I like the smell of coal fired smoke (like seen in this video ) more than the whitish smoke coming out of the oil fired engine of NMR (though both are pollutants of course)
This engines are now retired. They have two disel engines now a days.
This was recorded 12 years ago, of course. I believe and hope they still have steam locomotives which can be operated if necessary. Andy
0:42 intersection of 2 gauge class....
Yes. One is the 2 feet narrow gauge, the other is broad gauge at 5 feet 6 inches ..... Andy
@@AndyDandanFisherSteam And Meter Gauge also Sir
why train is reversing then forwarding
The climb up to Darjeeling is very steep and cannot be done in a straight line. There are two common ways of climbing into mountains - the spiral as seen at 3:20 and the "Z" shape or zig-zag as seen elsewhere in this clip.
In a few places, the zig-zag is so long that it's too dangerous to push the train with the loco, so they run around the train and pull it with the loco in reverse.

Huop şişman adam kıçını tren seviyesinde tut yoksa güzergâh üzerindeki her hangi bir ağaç yada bitki dalına takılabilir.
very good film
Thank you for your kind comment.
i went on this train in march 1968 (golly!) and well remember the loop where the railway crosses itself, at 3.00 in this film. a man squatted on the front footplate with a bucket of sand, and on this sharp corner and steep incline, he threw sand onto the rails to make the wheels stick. but this was nothing to the rangoon to mandalay train, in 1986, which seemed to bounce on the rails in the most terrifying way. yet so far as i know it never actually bounced off, which may be because burma is a buddhist country. love your film, the steady camera, the muted colours, the marvellous visual images. absolutely glorious! a beautiful film-making achievement.
Thank you so much !
Ok Good...........But I feel bad that many comments that the steam locos pollutes...???
