    Having used professional kitchen degreaser for chains: it works, and it's amazing. Turns out that if it can dissolve a bucket of lard out of a fume hood, it can also deal with a thin layer of bike grease :-D

      If you lucky enough to work with RATIONAL brand self cleaning oven... That is magical. You take out a shiny degreased component, dried ready to re-lube.
      Just make sure you don't get caught... If your boss not into cycling, you won't get much sympathy. Better chance for a written warning.

    Probably the best advert for NOT using Muc-Off on your bike!! Any parts that are greased but not fully sealed like seatposts, bolts etc are going to lose that protection over a few washes.
    Oh and a little tip, you can dilute Muc-Off down 50/50 with water and it's still just as good at cleaning your bike for half the cost. Judging by this little experiment it'll save your greased up parts from losing their protection too.

    Never used anything stronger than hot water and a rag on my Squirtlubed chains. I promise I get a lot, lot more life out of them than oiling and degreasing them. It's not how clean the chains are newly washed after the ride, standing in the garage that counts, its how clean they can stay when used...

      I like Squirt as well, but I don’t see how any reasonable degreaser shortens the life of your chain.
      BTW, from personal experience Squirt is not that good for CX, MTB or below zero conditions like a fat bike. It strips off too easily. Very nice on the TT bike!

    • @MrTheropod
      @MrTheropod 4 роки тому +1

      Rod Diaz
      Nah, it's not the degreaser thet shortens the life of the chain. I just said I do not need any degreaser. It's the sticky oil together with the dust or grime from the trail or road. You just need 5 mins of riding and your chain is trying to lube itself with a carborundrum-like paste. With squirt that doesn't happen. I've got squirt on all my bikes, mtbs, gravel and road and in my experience it's on the mtbs and my gravel it makes the most difference in chainwear.
      I live in sweden( cold country...) and I can see what you mean with subzero temperatures. I have not had any problems with stiff chains or shifting even at -5 to -10°c though. There are a special, softer squirt winterlube but I have never used that.
      I just clean the chains with water, let it dry and relube.
      I will never go back.

    • @aljowen
      @aljowen 4 роки тому +1

      @@RealMTBAddict I'm not sure whether wax is classed as dry or not, regardless, its quite different from other dry lubes and requires your chain to be fully stripped of any prior lubricant in order for it to work well (and actually adhere to the chain). Equally if you put a different dry lube on it will contaminate the chain requiring it to be re-cleaned. So I'm not really willing to lump it in with other dry lubes.

      @@DirtSailor5 I totally got that, just think it's a shame that a channel that trys to sell itself as for the everyday rider and often shows ways that a rider could save a bit of cash wouldn't put the obvious cheap choice as one of the things they were testing. I know it was a payed production and even advertised the fact at the st9but if Muc Off aren't confident enough in their products to put them up against something designed to clean dishes then obviously they don't rate their stuff very highly.

    I'm not sure I want a general purpose bike cleaner to be such a strong degreaser, don't want the bearings and seals going dry after washing the bike. I guess the good news is that it can likely be watered down quite a bit and still get the job done.

      For me the best option for the chain is to use chaine lube to clean it.
      I put a good amont of chaine lube dry it well with a rag. And after, I grease it with a little bit of chaine lube and thats it.
      In my opinion the excess cleaning with degreaser is quite useless and a waste of time. At the end you will have to change your chain and cassette anyway...

    I see a quite common comment about Muc OFF cleaner, many people don't use it and refuse to use it, cus they claim it leaves white or grey residue and that they struggle to get it off.
    to me it sounds like just bad inpatient washing, first I spray all the worst off, then the cleaner and I always let the cleaner do its work for few mins, and then use a brush, and rinse off and more cleaner if needed.
    what do you think is causing the grey & white residue?
    only times I got that was when I did not wash my bike properly, just did a quick rinse, cus the dirty water remains.

      The acid in it does discolor parts like black cassettes and chains, it's a natural chemical reaction and unavoidable when using any acid strong enough to effectively degrease anything.

    • @mtbboy1993
      @mtbboy1993 4 роки тому

      @@bobbyhempel1513 That I only noticed with the degreaser, it does to the black kitchen table I use as a work bench, if I get degreaser on it it makes it white and grey, and stays like that for long.

      Sp Citicorp to your question: WT mechanics before wet spring classic races. Fluorescent Shimano grease is easy to spot in the chains.
      On a more everyday use: well, if the degreaser can remove long-chain hydrocarbon thick grease, very likely it will easily remove dirty oil.
