Wholeheartedly agree with this talk's message on the importance of UI on immersion. So many games waste the opportunity that UI design presents in elevating the game's narrative. The quality of UI design can also play a huge role in whether a player seamlessly plays through a game or becomes frustrated/confused by how information is being presented to them.

"UI doesn't have to be just a bright "juicy" green button" :-D Thanks for sharing!

Is there a decent place to go to get in touch with people interested in game development? this may sound like a redundant question especially being asked on a channel focused on that topic lol. However it is a serious question I have, I have been obsessed with video games since I was young, when I was 15 instead of worrying about who is going to the school dance, I was sitting behind my laptop at home researching how to program and create AI. I do not personally think I am a good programmer, on the contrary I think I am very novice as there are many things I am constantly learning.
Just recently I have finally been able to afford a computer of higher processing power and capable or raytracing, and am trying to get more into game development than I currently am, and at the point where I am trying to learn the professional grade processes and earnestly dive into creating a game to release to public. The biggest issue is I personally know that my skills are not good enough to pull off that kind of project myself, and realistically I cant learn said skills (such as art design, graphic design, advanced programming) in a relevant time for what I am wanting to do in the next few years with my time.
So I guess what I am getting at is I am earnestly trying to find people to get with where I can collaborate with them on a project or even just help them with theirs while learning advanced techniques I do not know yet hands on. I am always eager to learn, further my knowledge, and humbly improve my skills and approaches to solve problems. I know my methods are rough and am trying to refine them, but do not know where to go to in order to start.

Meet-ups seem like a good place to connect with others in game development :)

Go on discord servers like the official Unity one, Indie game devs, etc. And just literally ask them

It's a nice talk, thank you :) Not what I expected, but it was a useful overview of the design process.
Personally, I would've liked to see a more practical demonstration on how to actually translate references into a working UI system. For example, how to take a wireframe and gradually transform it into the final design by adding the visual language. I'm quite comfortable with minimal/flat design and was looking for tips on how to add spice to it and expand my visual language. The title suggested that this would be the case, however it only briefly touched on the visual process by showing some moodboards, and always kept went back to basic ui design theory. I think this is aimed more at designers how are already comfortable with skeuomorphic design but struggle with over designing ui and structuring their creative process.
I also noticed that branding was often mentioned in the video, but without really showing how it applies outside the UI, and it also gave a bit cold, unempathetic tone to the presentation, more like a guide to creating a package design for a food product, than creating an emotional experience for gamers.
I think this title would be more accurate: Product Design Fundamentals for Game UI Artists

I gave this video a thumbs down because she takes over 30 minutes to tells us things that probably could have been said in less than 10.

I also gave your comment a thumbs down because that's not what GDC is about... It's not about 10-minute tutorials some 23 year old kid slapped together with clickbait thumbnails... It's supposed to be a lecture and it supposed to sound like one while keeping you engaged and presenting all the possible information you might actually need... The most dangerous/frustrating thing anyone trying to teach can do is assume people know things....

I think it's more that she obviously recites a talk she has written down before and learned by heart. Makes it less lively than it could have been. Better that than a terrible free-form presentation though I guess.

Are you trying to say that level of your immersion did not meet the engagement criteria necessitated by the goal to attain the requirements beneficial to the overall branded experience?

@@Dergeick this form of "reading a prememorized speech" is about right for gdc....if youre used to tedtalks, all gdc talks with the exception of the stanley parable talk will seem like a boring lecture...the take away from this is the massive amount of information shes giving on the topic, coming from a person thats made multiple successful UIs/UXs out in the real market.
The only GDC talks I dislike are those that sound like a infomercial where the Dev actually plugs thier product that you can buy to do X and Y....I absolutely detest those becuase they clearly got a letter to make a GDC talk and told themselve "SWEET Time to abuse the platform to make a sale." Reallusion did that with the platform and I can only wonder if their talk was taken down due to negative response to their long winded self inflating infomercial of a talk that offered little to no actual study material.

@@omegablast2002 I've seen plenty of GDC talks and this one felt rather like the exception in how scripted the speech was. The content was good but good presenters (to me at least) can actually make it sound like they're not reciting a written text (even if they might have written it at some point). It's not that big of a deal but I thought I'd chime in on what OP said because I understood the sentiment. On the other hand I haven't seen a lot of these "ads-like" talks that you're talking about. Maybe I've just been lucky.
