I have two 783's with 16.5 " Heavy Threaded Barrels, in .308 & .223 they both shoot sub MOA groups out of the box, I upgraded the stock to the Boyds AT-ONE and they both are keepers.
These are awesome. Picked up a 30/06 for 295 bucks new in the box and put a 3x9 bushnell trophy on it and took it to the range after loading up a bunch of different handload combos in 150 gr hornandy interlocks. That rifle outshot some of my much more expensive guns with sub MOA at 100 yards. The trigger is superb at 2.89 lbs with absolutely no creep.Im getting one soon in 7mm mag. Very underrated and great budget rifle for those looking for a good solid workhorse which wont let them down.
I really want a .308 bolt action for my collection and I really like Remington in general. Are these good for the $350 tag? I don't hunt and I usually target shoot with a .223 AR. Just wanting something scoped and bolt to change it up.
Question. If you put your clip in, empty or loaded, and put your hand underneath the clip on the bottom of the gun, and apply very light upward pressure, and then try close your bolt, does it bind against the back lip of the clip? Wondering if this is normal, cause mine seems to be doing this. I know it really doesn't matter, but I'm sure if the gun was resting on something that the clip pushes up on, it would prob never work. Just wondering if they all do this. Great vid! Just bought a new 783 in a 7mm mag chamber. Looking forward to trying it soon.
The sling studs on 783 remington 308win are tough. I'm a big guy and I've carried my rifle on sling. I've replaced two sling rings and the studs on my rifle weren't damaged at all. I love my rifle. Remington 783 is a good rifle I guarantee. Good video sir. Very explanatory.

Great review on the 783 Remington 30-06 I just bought this exact rifle I also dislike the sling studs but I am trying to put a bipod I noticed on your video before you click on it that you have a nice bipod set up. How do you mount the bipod do they make one that connects to the sling studs or do you have to mount a rail?

I own a 783 and my studs haven't caused me any troubles. Not saying they won't but I have a Harris 6-9" bipod on it. I was looking at the Boyd's stock for it too but the Boyd stock isn't pillar bedded which is drawing me away from it a bit.
Could you be able to put a model 700 picatiny rail on top, and then the rings plus scope,since their scope receiver bases are similar according to Remington website
The cost of spare mag's, and the fact they're metal for this one, made it the winner for me. I've gone back and forth between this, the Axis and the American; with the cost of the latter two, and the fact the Ruger is polymer, it kicked them to the curb. Which is sad. I really liked that heavy barrel Axis.
I have this in 30.06 and love it. Its a tack driver and I bought mine way cheaper than retail. The plastic swivel eyes are cheap but hey the stock is fully bedded and the barrell is thick and of high quality. Go to the remington website and check out the barrel and how they make it so accurate. I was going to buy a surplus mosin nagant but let me tell you..this remington will run rings around a surplus mosin. Im using a Tasco world class 4-16x on it and its holding up fine. Dont waste your money on a higher dollar rifle..this rifle WILL do the job on the cheap. I just wish it had iron sights...but then again its a longer range rifle.
bought one for $300 at Academy. ditched the scope that came with it and put a Nikon Buckmaster 2 BDC scope on it. It's a Tack driver. Sling mounts aren't the greatest but for $450 including decent glass. This rifle gets the job done quite nicely.
he's right about the sling mounts. I broke my front one with a bipod after a few rounds. Otherwise I absolutely love my 783. Fits everything I'll need it to do
Did you just make a new hole in the stock and screw in a sling stud? If not how did you fix it? I don't own this rifle but want to know how to fix it if this happens to happen. Thanks :)
Matt Jones: I ended up removing the barrel from the body, drilling two holes beneath the sling mount and bolting on a picatinny rail underneath. Bought a rail-to-bipod adapter (relatively inexpensive) and went that route. Looks a little cheap and cheesey, but with a pivoting bipod it works great.
Yeah they are sling swivel studs. Not meant for the pressure a bipod puts on it. They're cheap but they work when you don't try to push them into being something they'r'e not. I have a Benelli that cost well over a grand with the same set up. No problems.
Bought the 783, 1 year ago, in the 30-06 caliber. GREAT GUN! I’ve put exactly 68 rounds through it, with ZERO issues. Yes, the safety is loud. Yes, the sling studs are cheap, and may eventually break. But for the price, it’s got a great trigger, smooth bolt, free floating barrel, and groups extremely well. The scope that came on it was broken right out of the box. But I was gonna replace it anyway. Ended up choosing a vortex crossfire II, in 3x9x40. Favorite bolt action I have. Highly recommend picking one up. Also, best magazine of all the budget rifles in the same price range.
I bought one right before deer season from Gander mountain with a huge rebate. $215 with taxes it was a 300 win mag for that price so no way I was going to pass it up. it came with a lityle no name scope so I put on a really nice 50mm high power scope and I love the thing. Good long range rifle that is pretty accurate. As accurate as my model 700 but does not have all the aftermarket options....the only down side.
The plastic sling studs on the 770 are exactly like that & are common to rip off when using a bipod or sometimes even a sling. Other than that it looks like a step up from 770 excluding the 90° throw.
Nice review I had 2 questions... 1 how does the barrel thickness compair to the ruger american? I've heard the ruger's thin barrel gets hot after a few shots and the accuracy isn't as tightly grouped. And does the 783 have the same issue?
Easy Mac The 783 has a heavier profile barrel and yes, the Ruger's will heat up faster. The Ruger is also less front heavy and a lot lighter (7lbs for a 783 in .308 vs 6.1 lbs in a Ruger American)

ok im planning on buying one next year chambered in 7mm rem mag and am planning on putting on a bipod on and using for deer and possably elk from 50-600 yds. good gun? hows the recoil on the 7mil mag. any worse than the 30-06 in this rifle? and what is the scope called? thanks in advance for any replies

Back home in St. Louis at the Bass Pro, they have them listed for 280.00$ w/ a 3-9x40 scope mounted & boresighted. The reg. price on them is 330.00$. The way the article was written up didn't give the gauge of it, so I had to look it up here. DUH!
Just a thought on the sling studs... I have a 770 with the same sling studs they do break if you use a tripod on the front and are really weak.. I took a grinder and sand paper to mine and replaced with metal sling studs problem fixed...
Looks mostly pretty good, though for a hunting rifle I kinda prefer a built in box magazine rather than detachable (a detachable magazine runs the risk of getting lost).
Carry two. Seriously, this mag has a pretty nice latch (v-notch) and it fits flush so snags won't pull it out and the release is far enough forward you won't catch it by accident. Don't know how strong the latch spring is though but it feels adequate.
from my perspective, an excellent action, great trigger that adjusted down for me to near 2lbs, waaaaay better in the heavier 24" barrel (i have it in 6.5 creedmoor), typical tupperware junker stock (never even used it, replaced with a boyd's at-1). with a 6-24x50 scope on a 20moa base and an MBM beast brake it delivers hornady 140 grain eld-m's in about 5" groups at 700 yards.
This gun shoots great ,very little kick for such a high caliber and right on the money the stock is a bit ugly though so I'm getting a Boyd's replacement wood
Just recently bought my remington 783 30.06. Got it home and took the bolt out. Looked through where the barrel meets the action and I could see the threading like the barrel didn't get screwed back far enough, is it suppose to be like that? First time rifle owner. Thanks for sharing your review.
+Kou Lor the 783 uses a barrel nut to secure the barrel to the receiver as oppose to traditional thread extensions you would find on a 700 for example. the barrel is threaded into the receiver until it is properly head spaced, then the barrel nut is torqued on to secure it. the extra treads are supposed to be there. using the barrel nut is a much cheaper and easier to manufacture than traditional methods. it can be agued that the barrel nut style also offers improved accuracy
They're both great options. Remington has fixed some of the early QC problems that I saw with the 783, and Savage's new magazine they've developed for the Axis is much better than the one before.
I put my 783 (308) in an MDT( LSS) chassis wich actually cost more than the rifle itself. The MDT chasis takes AIC mags. As far as the bolt sticking, mine loosen up after 120 rounds fired. I suggest not using 180 grain rounds unless you don't mine a sore shoulder. It kicks like an angry mule...ouch

The Model 873 is an excellent rifle and it is not only high quality Remington built, but is budget price too. On the Cabelas catalog they were listed at $299 with all of the popular chamberings including .270, .30-06 and .308 as well as a factory 3-9x scope included with the package. In today's world of ultra tactical and ultra steroid-pumped $2000 competition bolt actions, there are some folks who just want a decent and accurate big game rifle for hunting and defense and the Remington 873 fits that niche perfectly. Honestly, most of the other hunting rifles in the catalog were priced $2000 and up, and I bet the 873 would do the same thing with a bullet out to 600 yards that the other ones would do.
Yup. In the woods the 783 will do anything the 2 and 3 grand rifles will do and at the end of the day the black synthetic stock wont have a scratch from prickly pear or brush it scraped against as you drug that nice buck out the 783 put down on the spot.

My new 783 fails the fire the first round.. Soft Strike, but then fires the next 2 fine. It happens every time ! 3 round mag, first round soft strike fail to fire, the next 2 fire fine.. What gives?
Stock was about the same as any of the other tupperware stocks that are on the value priced rifles except it uses plastic sling attach points instead of metal sling studs: not fantastic in my opinion. The buttpad was nice and squishy. The barrel itself is a heavier weight profile than most other rifles at this price point.
That's what I bought mine for. Used to plink in 22 LR, got tired of the LR high prices and scarcity. Buy my .223 as quality reloads, recoil is minor, can drag this iron around all day and not notice it. Check out your well connected and customer oriented LGS for bargains they can ship in. These can be had for a little over $300.
A gun shop let me hold a .270 the other day to check it out. Does the 783 seem a little more barrel heavy compared to a Ruger American, Savage, etc because it did to me? I just seen at my local Wal-Mart where they got black synthetic Remington 700's priced at $389 and that's with a scope (and I bet money its the same scope as on 783's). They didn't even have a 783 on display. I may just buy a 700 for that price.
Yes, the 783's use a slightly heavier weight barrel than most of the other budget hunting rifles. I really like the barrel weight. $389 seems far too low of a price for a Remington 700, so make sure it's not the inferior 770.
I find the extra weight makes a little more difficult to keep stable but everything else about it seems worth the money. I like the beefier stock and butt pad too. I double checked at a different Wal-Mart tonight and the only thing I was wrong about telling you was the price. They have true Remington black synthetic 700's w/ scope for $379. I almost can't believe it either. I would tell you to google it but apparently it doesn't list gun prices nor does Wal-Mart on their website. Why is that?
It is modified version of the xl7. Overall a great value gun. The two biggest dings in my experience are the sling studs and box magazine. It will do what you want it to once dialed in . I would spend my money on the Marlin xl7 first it is way better quality for the price. I bought the xl7 270 and love it. When I decided to get another rifle in 30-06. I was lying to myself at the shops checking out other guns like I wasn't going to get another xl7. it is an unbeatable value and unmatched performance. I love Remington and one day I will have the legendary Remington 700. It is sad that the 770 was so horrible they had to use Marlins designs to make a hybrid version now known as the 783. At first I was disappointed when I heard Marlin was now owned by Remington. But look forward to their new options like the 783 rifle. The barrel stock and half the bolt are Remington. On the783. The rest is exactly like the x series from Marlin. Why change a good thing. Overall I think it is a good deal. Thanks for a good video.
Remington and Marlin both have the same parent company. Freedom Group owns them both along with other firearms manufacturers. Freedom Group screws up every company that they get involved with... Examples such as Remington and Bushmaster so far
At 7 1/2 pounds w/scope (in .223) and the soft buttstock you'll have trouble beating the pig to death if you miss but it seems to have few jams or misfires. I'm told there are some problems with Winchester ammo though.
My wife purchases me a Remington 783 in the 308 for 249 dollars. Early Christmas present.. Dunhams Sporting Goods is a great place.. They have sales on every sunday and monday.
I've got a .308 version and the action was kinda rough but after 24 rounds and a good cleaning/oiling its now very smooth, can't wait to put many more rounds through it. I adjusted the trigger down to 2.5lbs after the first 4 rounds and liked it even more!
For hunting or just fun plinking? The Mosin is way cheaper to plink with because it uses surplus ammo. The 783, and any modern bolt action rifle will be better for hunting than the Mosin.
How much cheaper? The 783 has a better trigger and a slightly nicer magazine than an Axis, but it needs to be a quality one. Check bolt turn-in when you buy.
my from along stud broke at the range after about 50 rounds. I had harris bipod legs attached and it just snapped. gonna get a Boyds on it before I even fire it again. take warning I would immediately upgrade stocks or look at other firearms. its was a realiable accurate shooter and that is my only complaint
That depends entirely on the scope and brand of rings. If you don't have a decent selection of rings at home, I'd really recommend taking your rifle and scope to a (patient) gun shop and test fitting a few there. Getting a scope mounted so low that you can't fit caps sucks, and getting a scope so high that you compromise your cheek weld sucks too.
I have a question. When someone says "budget rifle", or says this rifle isn't near the rifle a Saiko or Ruger rifle is, what are they saying? I thought if you can load a round into the chamber, aim and fire and the round hits you target consistently, that is a good rifle. I guess people with a lot of money have different views of a good rifle.
+Brett Stroman Cheaper materials, more hastily finished, less fully featured, fewer QC steps. Don't get me wrong, I think these budget rifles are incredibly good these days and as a hunting rifle, you'd want for very little more but you can't put a Remington 783 next to a Sako 85 and have any doubt which one is the budget rifle of the two.
Paul G This rifle was in 270 Win, but the recoil wasn't bad at all. It's not a super lightweight rifle, so I think 7mm rem mag would be fine. To extend the stock, you could try a slip on recoil pad. The sling studs really are just plastic molded into the stock.
I also found that with my savage axis, but I did just install a spring in the axis trigger that takes it from an 8 pound pull to a 5-6 pound pull. Yet to try it out though
I hear the 783 works really well and is very accurate out of he box . I wish everyone a Great Hunting Season this year .

I bought one in .308 shot it twice out the box without cleaning put around 120 rounds through it no problems fairly accurate as well
Now that this and the axis 2 have been out for a while. Is there one you would recommend over the other? I'm just looking for a reliable 308
I've put a couple drops of oil on my safety and it has made it much quieter...not too concerned about the noise anymore.
How do you disassemble the bolt? Is it like the Model 700 in that regard? I think I want one. Never would have thought I'd say that.

I don't believe so, since the model 783 uses 2 front Rem 700 bases. The rear one wouldn't match up right.

The only thing that seemed like a flaw was the plastic sling stud, but I found a nice walnut stock with metals studs. That might be perfect..

I just bought this rifle, I agree the plastic part sucks and I plan on upgrading to wood finish.
I had Remington 770 .243 had the same sling stud and it broke

Just a thought on the sling studs... I have a 770 with the same sling studs they do break if you use a tripod on the front and are really weak.. I took a grinder and sand paper to mine and replaced with metal sling studs problem fixed...
Good points. One of the other commenters mentioned that Boyds makes a stock for the 783. I think I might go that route.

Looks mostly pretty good, though for a hunting rifle I kinda prefer a built in box magazine rather than detachable (a detachable magazine runs the risk of getting lost).
Carry two. Seriously, this mag has a pretty nice latch (v-notch) and it fits flush so snags won't pull it out and the release is far enough forward you won't catch it by accident. Don't know how strong the latch spring is though but it feels adequate.

from my perspective, an excellent action, great trigger that adjusted down for me to near 2lbs, waaaaay better in the heavier 24" barrel (i have it in 6.5 creedmoor), typical tupperware junker stock (never even used it, replaced with a boyd's at-1). with a 6-24x50 scope on a 20moa base and an MBM beast brake it delivers hornady 140 grain eld-m's in about 5" groups at 700 yards.

Just recently bought my remington 783 30.06. Got it home and took the bolt out. Looked through where the barrel meets the action and I could see the threading like the barrel didn't get screwed back far enough, is it suppose to be like that? First time rifle owner. Thanks for sharing your review.
+Kou Lor the 783 uses a barrel nut to secure the barrel to the receiver as oppose to traditional thread extensions you would find on a 700 for example. the barrel is threaded into the receiver until it is properly head spaced, then the barrel nut is torqued on to secure it. the extra treads are supposed to be there. using the barrel nut is a much cheaper and easier to manufacture than traditional methods. it can be agued that the barrel nut style also offers improved accuracy
As a beginner hunter, what would you rather buy as your first rifle, savage axis II or the remington 783
They're both great options. Remington has fixed some of the early QC problems that I saw with the 783, and Savage's new magazine they've developed for the Axis is much better than the one before.

I put my 783 (308) in an MDT( LSS) chassis wich actually cost more than the rifle itself. The MDT chasis takes AIC mags.
As far as the bolt sticking, mine loosen up after 120 rounds fired. I suggest not using 180 grain rounds unless
you don't mine a sore shoulder. It kicks like an angry mule...ouch

The safty is why I picked this rifle in 308 for my 13 year old daughter and I slapped a Leupold VX2 4x12x40mm on it and it is a tack driver
bought one in 300 win mag kicks like a mule popped bull moose 300 yds no problem upgrade to leupoled bases and rings

The Model 873 is an excellent rifle and it is not only high quality Remington built, but is budget price too. On the Cabelas catalog they were listed at $299 with all of the popular chamberings including .270, .30-06 and .308 as well as a factory 3-9x scope included with the package. In today's world of ultra tactical and ultra steroid-pumped $2000 competition bolt actions, there are some folks who just want a decent and accurate big game rifle for hunting and defense and the Remington 873 fits that niche perfectly. Honestly, most of the other hunting rifles in the catalog were priced $2000 and up, and I bet the 873 would do the same thing with a bullet out to 600 yards that the other ones would do.
Yup. In the woods the 783 will do anything the 2 and 3 grand rifles will do and at the end of the day the black synthetic stock wont have a scratch from prickly pear or brush it scraped against as you drug that nice buck out the 783 put down on the spot.

My new 783 fails the fire the first round.. Soft Strike, but then fires the next 2 fine. It happens every time ! 3 round mag, first round soft strike fail to fire, the next 2 fire fine.. What gives?

You didn't talk about two important parts, the barrel and the stock. Are they good at all?
Stock was about the same as any of the other tupperware stocks that are on the value priced rifles except it uses plastic sling attach points instead of metal sling studs: not fantastic in my opinion. The buttpad was nice and squishy. The barrel itself is a heavier weight profile than most other rifles at this price point.

+Robert Flagg A Harris Bipod bolts right onto the front sling swivel that is molded into the stock. I haven't had any issues with it.

That's what I bought mine for. Used to plink in 22 LR, got tired of the LR high prices and scarcity. Buy my .223 as quality reloads, recoil is minor, can drag this iron around all day and not notice it. Check out your well connected and customer oriented LGS for bargains they can ship in. These can be had for a little over $300.

A gun shop let me hold a .270 the other day to check it out. Does the 783 seem a little more barrel heavy compared to a Ruger American, Savage, etc because it did to me? I just seen at my local Wal-Mart where they got black synthetic Remington 700's priced at $389 and that's with a scope (and I bet money its the same scope as on 783's). They didn't even have a 783 on display. I may just buy a 700 for that price.
Yes, the 783's use a slightly heavier weight barrel than most of the other budget hunting rifles. I really like the barrel weight. $389 seems far too low of a price for a Remington 700, so make sure it's not the inferior 770.
I find the extra weight makes a little more difficult to keep stable but everything else about it seems worth the money. I like the beefier stock and butt pad too. I double checked at a different Wal-Mart tonight and the only thing I was wrong about telling you was the price. They have true Remington black synthetic 700's w/ scope for $379. I almost can't believe it either. I would tell you to google it but apparently it doesn't list gun prices nor does Wal-Mart on their website. Why is that?

It is modified version of the xl7. Overall a great value gun. The two biggest dings in my experience are the sling studs and box magazine. It will do what you want it to once dialed in . I would spend my money on the Marlin xl7 first it is way better quality for the price. I bought the xl7 270 and love it. When I decided to get another rifle in 30-06. I was lying to myself at the shops checking out other guns like I wasn't going to get another xl7. it is an unbeatable value and unmatched performance. I love Remington and one day I will have the legendary Remington 700. It is sad that the 770 was so horrible they had to use Marlins designs to make a hybrid version now known as the 783. At first I was disappointed when I heard Marlin was now owned by Remington. But look forward to their new options like the 783 rifle. The barrel stock and half the bolt are Remington. On the783. The rest is exactly like the x series from Marlin. Why change a good thing. Overall I think it is a good deal. Thanks for a good video.
Remington and Marlin both have the same parent company. Freedom Group owns them both along with other firearms manufacturers. Freedom Group screws up every company that they get involved with... Examples such as Remington and Bushmaster so far

Hell yes. A fine rifle all the way around.

At 7 1/2 pounds w/scope (in .223) and the soft buttstock you'll have trouble beating the pig to death if you miss but it seems to have few jams or misfires. I'm told there are some problems with Winchester ammo though.

None on mine BUT, I tested a few at the gun shop and some of the bolts were pretty bad. Very gritty and hard to close.
My wife purchases me a Remington 783 in the 308 for 249 dollars. Early Christmas present.. Dunhams Sporting Goods is a great place.. They have sales on every sunday and monday.
I've got a .308 version and the action was kinda rough but after 24 rounds and a good cleaning/oiling its now very smooth, can't wait to put many more rounds through it. I adjusted the trigger down to 2.5lbs after the first 4 rounds and liked it even more!

For hunting or just fun plinking? The Mosin is way cheaper to plink with because it uses surplus ammo. The 783, and any modern bolt action rifle will be better for hunting than the Mosin.

How much cheaper? The 783 has a better trigger and a slightly nicer magazine than an Axis, but it needs to be a quality one. Check bolt turn-in when you buy.
It is about 30-40 cheaper right now for the scope package. I hear the savage may be more accurate, is this true?
I can put 10 shots in the same whole at 200 yards,and shoot dimes at a hundred with the 783
my from along stud broke at the range after about 50 rounds. I had harris bipod legs attached and it just snapped. gonna get a Boyds on it before I even fire it again. take warning I would immediately upgrade stocks or look at other firearms. its was a realiable accurate shooter and that is my only complaint

That depends entirely on the scope and brand of rings. If you don't have a decent selection of rings at home, I'd really recommend taking your rifle and scope to a (patient) gun shop and test fitting a few there. Getting a scope mounted so low that you can't fit caps sucks, and getting a scope so high that you compromise your cheek weld sucks too.

If it helps, I'm using high Leupold rings and have room on my Bushnell 3200. I might be able to get away with lower rings.
I have a question. When someone says "budget rifle", or says this rifle isn't near the rifle a Saiko or Ruger rifle is, what are they saying? I thought if you can load a round into the chamber, aim and fire and the round hits you target consistently, that is a good rifle. I guess people with a lot of money have different views of a good rifle.
+Brett Stroman Cheaper materials, more hastily finished, less fully featured, fewer QC steps. Don't get me wrong, I think these budget rifles are incredibly good these days and as a hunting rifle, you'd want for very little more but you can't put a Remington 783 next to a Sako 85 and have any doubt which one is the budget rifle of the two.

have you shot this in a 7mm? also where would a guy get extensions for the stock. i have longer arms then most. and is the sling clips really plastic?
Paul G This rifle was in 270 Win, but the recoil wasn't bad at all. It's not a super lightweight rifle, so I think 7mm rem mag would be fine. To extend the stock, you could try a slip on recoil pad. The sling studs really are just plastic molded into the stock.

783 Trigger is crisp and smooth much better than my savage axis 243 trigger
I also found that with my savage axis, but I did just install a spring in the axis trigger that takes it from an 8 pound pull to a 5-6 pound pull. Yet to try it out though
not sure if archangel stocks already made a good one for it.
I don't think they've made one for the Rem 783 yet. Their new Mosin stock sure is cool!
