    Went down a motor oil rabbit hole a while back. What I have come to accept is that for most people the motor oil is not as important as changing every 5k miles and using a high quality filter.

    • @anonymike8280
      @anonymike8280 3 місяці тому +3

      Not even that. If you change the oil every 5000 miles, you can use a low-end or no-name filter. Premium oil brands may contain more additives but if your oil change interval is 5000 miles or less, you are not utilizing what you are paying for. Better to use low-end products and maintain a shorter oil change interval. The ability of an oil to continue neutralizing acids and suspending contaminants means nothing if the acids are never there in the first place. A shorter oil change interval mean they will not be there in the first place.

      Agree with most of what you say. Except the cheap filter. You want a good bypass valve for cold weather starts. When it's 0°F or below, I can tell with my Ranger when the bypass doesn't open and the engine is starved for oil. I use Wix filters and it happens usually once a winter, been lucky this year.

      @@happydays8171 I'm more willing to think that there could be bad oil filters than that there could be bad motor oil. I live in a happy world where the overnight temperatures never get below 25 F. I think where the idea of bad oil comes from is that sometimes independent retailers sell products made for some purpose other than use in modern motor vehicles. For example, SA oil. SA oil still has uses. That's why it's still made and bottled. Just not in any car or truck on the road today.

      I hear you. SA would be for an older car. Dollar General is in a lawsuit for selling wrongly labeled oils that ruined people's engine. Oils today have to meet more roller bearing spec than hydraulic lifters engines did 25 yrs ago.

    • @anonymike8280
      @anonymike8280 3 місяці тому

      @@happydays8171 Dollar General settled the lawsuit eventually. They were selling non-detergent oil which was SA, not SB. SA has no additives whatsoever. SB has additives, but no detergent. The only use for SB single weight I know of is in original Volkswagen engines. It is not required, but some Volkswagen purists still use it. For old times sake, I guess.
      The other oils involved were multigrade oils made to meet pre-1988 specifications. Again, all of these products continue to be made because there is a use for them and a market. They do not belong on retail shelves. I have observed that retail chains are pretty careful about what they stock. You don't see non-detergent or obsolete service classifications anymore. Most people do not know enough about motor oil to decipher the label.
      I noticed Dollar Tree stopped selling oil. They probably were not able to find a reliable supplier who could sell them pint bottles they could put on the shelf at their price, now $1.49. A regional dollar chain where I live solved the problem by selling only Chevron products. But they sell them at box store prices, not at a discount price.
      Another issue is transmission fluid. People really need to know how to read the label when transmission fluid is involved. All the supermarket, independent and "dollar" chains sell is Dex II/III, also known as DexMerc. If you have a Honda, Chrysler or anything recent, better not use Dex III.

I managed a business that has the #1 brand in the market for that product and Costco was religious on their inspections and quality checks. I would say Kirkland motor oil would out perform Mobil 1 . If it says Kirkland on it you know it is a great quality product.

      Sure, because oil is oil. No one is going to operate a refinery and make bad motor oil or other petroleum products. If they did, the large-scale buyers such as parts chains, oil change chains, big box retailers and the United States government would not buy from them and they would soon be bankrupt. The myth of bad oil comes from retailers stocking and selling inappropriate products. All products have a use. That's why they are still produced. But some of them are not for use in modern motor vehicles, not even 1950s and 1960s vehicles with cast iron engines.
      People need to read the label and know at least a little, itty-bitty bit.

    The problem with Warren Oil products is that they are not using a lot of AN's or Esters. Their products contain a lot of GII and GIII base oils. A UOA only tells you about the wear numbers and gives trending data. It does not tell you what deposits are forming inside the engine. If people where changing their oil at 5000 miles or every 6 months it would not matter. A lot of compaines today are recomending 10,000 mile oil change intervals or every 12 months which ever comes first. You UOA can look great and 5 to 10 years later you need to go intot he engine to make a repair or to replace a leaking gasket and you see that the engine is full of deposits. You also run into a great chance of long term oil consumption due to those deposits around the oil control rings which are impossible to clean insitu. Since so few people every do any repair work or maintence to their engines they are unaware of what is going on inside of the engine. I have seen this mayself many times.

    Whoa. Warren Oil Co. of Dunn, N.C., is a completely different company from x-Warren Distribution who blends the oil for Walmart, Costco, and others...now known as Highline Warren. Neither one "makes" the oil; the oil refiners make oil. Highline Warren (formerly Warren Distribution) is an oil blender. They buy base oil from a refiner, buy an additive package from a chemical company like Lubrizol, Chevron Oronite, Infineum, and others, and blend it to spec.

    What research do you base your opinions regarding engine oils. Why would a name brand be better than Kirkland?

    • @anonymike8280
      @anonymike8280 3 місяці тому +3

      Motor oil has to meet certain specifications. The refiner can go minimum or they can put in more additives. There are two kinds of synthetic oil - Group III and Group IV. Group III is highly refined petroleum (dino) oil out of the ground. Group IV is synthesized from natural gas. Low-end synthetic meets the spec but treat it as glorified conventional for oil change purposes.
      Lower priced oil is not deficient, but the additives wear out sooners. Use low priced oil, you need to change it sooner. Don't be oversold on the high price stuff though. Those extended oil change intervals (15,000 and 25,000 miles) are based on all highway driving, not the constant short trips and stop-and-go driving that most people experience.

      There is no such thing as a deficient motor oil. Some pricey motor oils have extra additives which permit a longer oil change interval if the vehicle is being driven all-highway miles. If you are driving all short trips and stop and go, cut the oil change interval in half. Let me illustrate. My car is a 2001 Camry with a 2.2L 5SFE four. My standard is that a low end or no-name filter is good for 5000 miles, no more. I use semisynthetic oil and my change interval with all local driving is 2800 miles. Whatever you are driving and whatever product you are using, you have to be strict about this. Dino (conventional) or semi might be good for up to 7500 miles in all highway driving with a middle-grade filter. Stay within the specifications of the vehicle and the products you are using. I use the lowest priced, whatever I can get, and I have no problems because of it.

    The discussion is long of conversation and short on data. There is data out there that supports this video's conclusions, looking at specific oil and additives and how the oil 'wares' over mileage. My Dad was a lub engineer for then Standard Oil of Indiana (Now part of BP). Standard distributed Quaker State and I have an ashtray for Quaker State that reads: " This ashtray is made out of 2 ounces of steel. This is the difference between a new engine and a warn out engine." He was also a believer in changing oil often.

    One has to look at the Viscosity Index Number to determine the oils quality, the higher the number the higher the oil quality.
    Conventional oil has a VI of 80 - 90.
    Synthetic has a VI of 120 and up.
    If it say´s API/SP on the bottle then it meets the same requirment of any other oil on the market.
    Kirklands 5w30 might be a little low for some diesel engines.

    Heads up. Supertech conventional and semisynthetic apparently is not made by Warren. I say "apparently" because who really knows? The source could change at any time so as the oil meets the published spec. Last I heard, Supertech conventional and semi were made by Mobil. It is essentially an oil company product. By this I mean the big names like Shell, Mobil, Chevron, Texaco, Arco, Union, SInclair, Havoline, Citgo or whatever. All of these oils are essentially about the same. At this point, all of the historic independent names like Quaker, Pennzoil, Castrol, Kendall, Ashland or whatever others there may be all now are owned by the major oil companies. Nobody makes bad motor oil. It cost between $5 and $15 billion to build an oil refinery. Who is going to make that kind of capital investment and make a bad product? The major buyers are the U.S. government, parts store chains, oil change chains and big box retailers. Get a bad reputation and you will lose some huge amount of money and someone else will own your refinery.

    From a professional and technical standpoint regarding Costco/Kirkland lubrication products....
    They are an entry level API oil made by Warren Distribution. The NOACK isn't very impressive at 12-14% (depending on grade) compared to Mobil 1 EP 5w-30 that's 9% and Driven LS30 5w-30 that's 6%. The lower the NOACK volatility, the less the oil evaporates at high temperature which means less oil consumption and ultimately a cleaner engine as less of that evaporated hydrocarbon gets pulled into the intake and past the rings. If you're just looking and only care to get the bare minimum spec, Kirkland/Costco is a low quality option for that.

    To be clear I have seen this with SuperTech Synthetic. I have worked on people that ran that oil exclusively because it was cheap and "synthetic" they did not do 10,000 mile OCI they did 5000 mile OCI. By the time the car had 96K miles it needed it's valve cover gasket changed. It was not a nightmare varnish situation but it had significant beginings of varnish deposits. I owned 2 of the exact same engines ran on Mobil-1 products with 2X the miles with zero visible deposits. I have seen that same make and engine with 10,000 mile oil changes with Warren oil and they have all been nigtmarish with insane heavy varnish inside that reminded one of 1980's engines run on dino oil.I have one car that is 21 years old with 170K miles and the inside of the engine is as clean as the day it left the factory. Run on Mobil-1 products last 15 years. Prior to that I ran everything from diesel oil to Preium Synthetic Boutique oil from around the world testing them all. It is was happens over time not each short snap-shot with UOA. Deposit control not just at the piston but through out the entire engine is important. Research BMW 15,000 mile drain interval deposits and images. You see it in other makes and models as well. You also see a growing trend that is almost linear with the rate of extended oil change recomendations and oil consumption and cam phaser issues and timing chain issues. Given the cost of a new car or truck or even the price of a low milage used car or truck saving money on oil and filters is kind of ssilly given the repair costs on engine repairs. Kirkland makes sense if you lease a vechile or if you trade in every 3-5 years so you never risk long term issues and repair cost's.
