Come on guys, you didn't study? The Jewish and Italian formed their national crime syndicate and had their meeting in atlantic city. They only invited two Irish mobsters (Frank McErlane, Owney Madden) as a way of saying that the Irish time is up, going into the.future you are not needed. Madden got the hint and left his rackets and moved to hot springs. After Prohibition ended, labor union control and union racketeees became the next money maker for organized crime. The Irish mob was now down to 20 guys active out of one neighborhood (hells kitchen). While the five families had thousands of members and dominated organized crime throughout New York and America. To exist/survive, the Irish had to do something they never did when they ruled the underworld which was work with the Italians. First called the arsenal gang, then the Mcgrath-Dunne gang, then eventually just the Irish mob with mcgrath firmly on top. Mcgrath became so trusted and such a good partner, it was said amongst meyer lansky and the mafia, specifically the Genovese family (his partners) his word was gold. McGrath's Irish mob was super violent and the gang was the inspiration for "on the water front". Then McGrath's number 2, "Dunne" and hitman "Sheridan" were executed in old sparky, the electric chair and Mcgrath went into semi retirement in Florida. Mcgrath put hughie mulligan in as acting boss, to run the rackets in hells kitchen on his behalf.
Mulligan expanded gambling and forged strong ties with the NYPD.
Mulligan a queens native, upon retiring offered acting boss to fellow queens native and former apprentice Jimmy burke. Burke passed on the job and mulligan second pick was Spillane who was campaigning heavily for the job. Spillane believed the boss should be from hells kitchen and got the job. McGrath's hells kitchen Irish mob label ended after mulligan and The Spillane gang started.
Spillane went on to marry into the McManus family, which were the top political family in hells kitchen and together with his wife truly controlled the neighborhood.
Spillane ran the Madison square and had the city's biggest card game in which the who's who of the cities power and celebrities attended. He had the kidnapping racket and the javitz center being built in his area.
Fat tony, seeing spillane wouldn't split ownership over the javitz center construction rackets had his aging go-to hitman and Irishman John Sullivan hire another Irish hitman joseph Sullivan to take out Spillanes hitmen. Splllane hitmen, falsey labeled his top men and inner circle, Tom Delaney, the Greek kapatos and the "the butcher"commiskey were executed by Sullivan .
Costellano after losing a few commission decisions to fat tony, also wanted a piece of the javitz center. Seeing Spillanes gang being murdered by fat tony, he tried to find a way in on the javitz.
Gambino associate Roy Demeo wanted nothing more then to be a made man. Costellano vowed he would never make him a made man. Demeo knowing the westies fear was growing and costellano figured if he could get the westies on his side, he would have the most feared family and could control the commission. Demeo befriended coonan and made him an offer. If demeo killed spillane for coonan, coonan would have to sit down with costellano. During this time fat tony had Sullivan kill all of Spillanes men and now gave sullivan the contract to kill coonan and featherstone. Sullivan got cold feet and told coonan and featherstone fat.tony hired him to kill them.
Removed from westie history, the meat wagon (white can) packed out with westies then drove day and night around fat Tony's headquarters in east Harlem attempting to kill him, he went into hiding.
Spillane living in queens and fearing for his life, tried to get a sit down to end the killing but could not. So spillane went down to Florida to talk to mcgrath. The mafia would not sit down with Spillane, Mcgrath was still considered the Irish mob boss and only Mcgrath could end the dispute. Mcgrath informed Spillane that the killing was over and could negotiate with fat tony. I believe mcgrath was paid off and turned on Spillanes. Demeo killed spillane and the Westies met with costellano. They had to, give the Gambino's a percentage of the kitchens rackets in return were given a piece of the javitz center and a percentage of Gambino rackets. Costellano told them they were now a wing of the Gambino family and could not kill fat tony. This power over fat Tony's life truly made costellanos power grow amongst the commission and the 5 families. For bringing the most feared gang in New York City under the Gambino's umbrella Roy Demeo finally became a made man. Demeos crew went on to become the Italian version of the westies. Often referred to as a businessman and not a racketeer. Costellano, like it or not, had the most feared hit men in mafia history at his disposal and this gave the "businessman" don, unimaginable power.

Featherstone was born on West 43rd St.,[1] one of nine children.[2] His mother helped with the Veterans of Foreign Wars and his father was a customs officer.[2] He had blond hair and was often said to be baby-faced.[1] He claimed that he served in the Vietnam War as member of the Green Berets at age 17 after lying about his age.[1] He served as a stock clerk.[3] To his disappointment, he did not see combat, although he was circumcised by his friends in a drunken prank.[3][4] He received a medical discharge in 1967 after just a year, claiming to have hallucinations.[1][2]

Sorry to be that guy but on my channel I interview Vietnam era green berets from SOG . Mickey Featherstone was not in SF or a green beret and he did not see combat! His files are nowhere in the 5th group records! He was already crazy and when those supply guys he worked with gave him a circumcision that drove him off the deep end. Otherwise great show

You also got Mickey Featherstone military service wrong.😢 Mickey Featherstone never saw any action in Vietnam he was strictly Supply and furthermore remained in New York for most of his military service. Also Jimmy coonan was hooked up with Ruby Stein during Jimmy coonan's first stint in prison😮 nice try fellas but I have to go you guys mean well but you've just got to much of this wrong. Please do your research first and I'll be happy to check out your videos.😢😊😅
