Lovely cross section of my home borough! If you ever decide to this again for some reason, you can actually get a lot closer to JFK airport on foot! You can technically enter the airport itself at the Lefferts Boulevard entrance, but you still need to take the Airtrain from there to get to your terminal, but since you're already in the airport, it's free to ride at that point and you don't need a metrocard.

About ten years ago I walked from the Dupont Circle area to DCA after having visited my son. I made sure everything I needed for the weekend fit into a smallish school backpack, so it was easy walking and took about 90 minutes (not counting all the time I spent at the park next door photographing airliner landings). The only tricky spot was coming off of the Arlington bridge, when I had to cross the road underneath to get to the walking trail and there wasn't much visibility for seeing cars coming from the right. Could have avoided that hiccup if I had used the 14th St Bridge instead, in retrospect.

So for the future, the actual pedestrian entrance to JFK (and the only way to enter JFK without a car or without paying the airtrain fare) is via the Lefferts Blvd Airtrain station. This stop is pedestrian accessible (albeit not a very pleasant walk) and is free to use, unlike the Howard Beach and Jamaica airtrain stops which cost money.

Once, when flying into Santa Barbara, California, I was able, though a combination of light packing and very careful planning, to take a kick scooter on the plane with me and scoot my way to the hotel, right out of the airport. I was even able to take everything carry-on (the scooter was human-powered, so no lithium ion batteries) and didn't have to wait for a checked bag. The airport is sited right next to a bike trail, which makes getting out of there on a bike very easy.
Another time, I flew to San Jose, California, and was able to walk out of the airport to a nearby office building stocked with Bird scooters. I hopped aboard and rode one of them 10 miles down a trail to my destination. The return trip was really a steal, riding a Spin non-electric bike for only $1. Nobody objected when I left the bike right at the airport entrance and walked on in.

Throwing this thought out at 1:03, before watching the rest of the video: LaGuardia is actually quite pedestrian-friendly as airports go, or at least it was the last time I checked (granted that was 10 years ago or more, way before the new terminal was built). It was surprisingly plausible to walk to the terminals from the surrounding streets either to the south in Jackson Heights or even from Flushing Meadows to the east. I've never approached Kennedy on foot but given the expressway loop under the airfield being the main access for cars I'm guessing it's less so, unless you resort to getting on the AirTrain at one of the outlying stops. Ok...now I'll see what you actually did.

This is brilliant! Never would have thought to because airports are notoriously difficult to get in & out of for free hahaha!
I tried to walk out of Gatwick Airport in the UK once. Or at least get somewhere where I could be picked up by my family. Couldn't do it - had to use the designated pickup/drop off.
The only airports ive ever been to where you can just walk to the terminal is London-City and Teesside International in the UK

There was a New York Times story a few years ago about a British guy who flew in to JFK from London and then walked from there all the way to his hotel in midtown Manhattan. Took him all day long to get there, very interesting all the neighborhoods he walked through.

if your leaving the terminal eat away from the expensive airport. queens has great resturants cheap to expensive and from all kinds of cultures.

Walking out of LGA is a little confusing because there is only one bridge that is walkable out. Just watch where the employees are walking.
And getting into is a little tricky. There are sidewalks on the Van Wyck expressway, but at night it might be sketchy.

I used to live 1/2 mile from the airport in Albuquerque, and walked there almost every time I would fly. Got stopped by airport security a couple times just because no one ever does that.

I’m not sure I can enter or leave my nearest airport, PBI, on foot. Probably with a bit of effort? Last I was at MSP it seemed easy from the secondary terminal. Smaller airports like BMI or DAB look obvious from the parking lot: you end up in the middle of nowhere but you’re walking along a fairly prominent road that leads you to the city proper. Of course the next airport with scheduled flights is 50 miles or more away…
Last I was at HPN I left on foot to kill time before a flight but I hopped a bus once outside to get somewhere interesting and then took a bus back. That was maybe 15 years ago though.

I do crazy things but never thought this was possible. When SW came to MacArthur (ISP), I rode my bike there from S Jersey, over 160 miles one way and flew with it to SLC. I do the same to BWI which is over 200 miles the safest way. Nice to know it’s possible to do if you have the will. I’m impressed by your accomplishment.

That airtrain was a brilliant idea like most of the people commenting said, would not be a good idea to be in Southside after dark though you technically can walk all the way in straight down Sutphin. Better move would be Richmond Hill but great job doing something that possibly has not been done before in recent times.

If you keep walking to Lefferts Blvd/AirTrain Station, that is closest AirTrain from LGA to JFK without having pay any fee. But, that would be another three miles of walk.
