The thing about Queen, and many others on the list, is that at the time their songs came out, they weren't as popular or chart topping. They were ahead of their time. However, they had staying power, and remained relevant for far longer than some artists you were surprised about ranking higher, who may have been super popular at the time, but are not as relevant anymore.
They were less successful as singles artists but sold loads of albums.
The weird thing is that this is curated from what I understand, loosely based on all kinds of metrics
Yeah, in that sense it should have a more palatable list. @roomie
@RoomieOfficial Yes, when you read how they measured, it is hard to understand their metrics. I wonder how much weight they gave to certain categories, because population sizes consuming music change as well throughout the years.
Queen lost popularity in the US in the 80’s so if this is a US-based list then it makes sense that their showing would be very low. I believe that the most current song played on US radio is Under Pressure (1981). Anything after that goes unplayed on American Radio.
This list.. it's like warping through time and genres back and forth in an interestingly confusing manner 😂
Yeah I thought it would be through the decades and not just back and forth like that lol
@@tylerhackner9731 yeah, I get that it’s probably the "all-time most successful" aspect that makes it goes unchronologically, still this feels random haha. Billboard's methodology, man..
We want a goodbye Panic! At The Disco video. I don't care if it's a year late
That's how space-time actually works. No past, no present, no future. Just a big wibbly-wobbly stuff
I hate the way it's cut but the list is fun. PS: Music taste has nothing to do with gender.
MJ will always be my favorite 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Same 🔥🔥
Me too! Plus, Hall & Oates, Queen, Journey, and Duran-duran...
He’ll yeah
He had music in his veins! Iconic definitely
MJ = The last Superstar
Sorry for derailing the video like pennies on railroad tracks 🤪
Oh wow, I’m here early for this comment
dang bro
You were great! I appreciate your input.
The Beatles, MJ, Mariah, Whitney and Celine my favorite.
as a girl I too listen to rock religiously
Same I didn't know Nickleback was hated until I got better at english. Since I was a teen I've loved his voice a lot.
@@YumikoMayamine I got into rock due to imagine dragons at a young age but I've recently realised they aren't popular anymore (their old stuff is good indie rock) which is weird
@@equixie maybe it's because I 'm almost 30 but I don't know what's popular or not. They are still making videos so I'm ok
How was Kiss not on this?
@@YumikoMayamine Same. I really loved the song Savin Me that they play in this video
I don't understand this chart.
I'd be interested in seeing an international version of this...Thanks for the great videos: I always learn something new. Love from Canada.
Yes...Queen would be a lot higher
I was not expecting Tim McGraw or Kenny Rogers to make the list
I was also not expecting John Denver. He is my all time favorite artist
I Love, love, love John Denver. Just binge listened to him yesterday, YESTERDAAAY.🎶🎵🎶❤
Rogers and Denver are a couple of my favorites. I love that era of country
Kenny Rogers i get. He wss massive back in the day.. Tim Mcgraw i dont get as much.
I dont eve know John Denver so cant really speak on it..
John Denver is awesome and stayed true to himself.
I used to live in a pretty country heavy area and I heard those 3 a LOT along with patsy cline.
Paul Mccartney, as a solo artist/with Wings, created some incredible songs. Unfortunately, it seems a lot of them have been forgotten.
I think the reason John often overshadows Mccartney in lists these days is due to a few reasons.
One is his unfortunate death, john had only just started writing again when he died, and people started to really appreciate in hindsight the stuff he created.
But the second and I think biggest reason is because of the media during the 70s, Mccartney post beatles was known as the one who broke up the band, for a long time the media blamed him for the break up.
Critics would destroy any attempt he made at becoming a solo artist, criticising him if he tried to experiment and criticising him if he played it too safe. It was only when he made band on the run, a beatle esque album, that they could no longer deny his abilities.
Unfortunately, all of the bad press stopped a lot of radio stations from playing his music, as the whole world blamed him for the break up.
I thought John/Yoko were the reason for the break up? Also, I really love Paul McCartney, but he made easily the worst popular Christmas song of all time.
@@tylarjackson7928 John and George wanted a break from the band. It realistically had little to do with Yoko.
John left late 1969, but the first person to announce the break up was Paul in 1970, and the media was all over it.
I will not disagree that Paul's Christmas song is bad, but I do still love it because, to me, it encapsulates the Christmas spirit. It is just pure joy and silliness.
@@autistickakarot Oh okay. And yeah, the song has been stuck in my head since typing this, and it put me in a pretty good mood honestly.
@@tylarjackson7928 Cool. Thanks for enduldging me, I quite enjoy sharing the unless information and unneeded opinions that I carry around.
It's b/c of "Imagine" & "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" being the most popular post-Beatles songs from any member of the band. John also had the more intriguing life outside of music. As far as the public was concerned, John's relationship w/ Yoko was what broke up the band. Most people today are unlikely to be concerned about what 70s media thought about Paul.
Roomie I think you should Know that Queen lost their Popularity in USA in 1982 Following the release of the album "Hot Space" and even More after banning the music video of "I Want To Break Free" 1984 they decided not to tour in America anymore They were still Popular in Europe and rest of the world But not in the USA that Was until The death of Frontman Freddie Mercury in 1991 that they Regained popularity in America thats the main Reason they are low on this list
i think there was a spike in popularity in the us after live aid....but yeah thats pretty much right.
Why? Did Freddie come out then or something?
@@tylarjackson7928 its called the dead Artist factor when freddie died he was 45 and people started listening to the music again not only that on the movie Waynes world they featured "Bohemian Rhapsody" for that reason the song peaked at number 2 in billboard charts in 1992 back when it was released it only peaked at number 9
Liking the relaxed vibe u and Rod have on this video, two guys casually chatting about music 😊 Weird order on this list, but once again nice reminder of some of the golden oldies that I haven't heard for a long time 😊
🙏
i agree on the vibes, it feels like a face time lmao
It's easy to forget just how popular Mariah Carey was in the 90's, She was the biggest selling artist of that decade and had 14 U.S.number ones in that decade alone
Mariah Carey is the only artist - solo or band, male or female - to ever have songs at #1 in 11 consecutive years. She ruled the 90s and it wasn't even close.
This list looked a lot different about 3-5 years ago. Janet Jackson was placed one position ahead of Michael Jackson. I wonder how billboard ranks this.
love your videos roomie!!
I appreciate that roomie is just as confused about this list’s rankings as i am
Awesome video!!👍 I was confused with the rankings also. Love Phil Collins' songs💗💟
It's crazy that Prince released WAY more singles & albums than MJ, yet the latter still sold more records.
Prince released ALOT of experimental albums - lots of "unpolished" tracks.
This mind-jarring format is how I like my playlist to work. I loved every second if it.
you should compare this with the UK charts now to see how much of a difference there is and why that might be
20:13 i've always found phone bans at events to be ridiculous because:
1. if your fans wanna relive the memories, let them
2. they could get an urgent notification from work, family, etc.
3. one day phones will grow too big for any pouch or camera tape
20:17 and this is just painful
It’s probably because it’s come out recently that Don Henley has been lip syncing so less cameras cut down on how obvious it would be.
Always look forward to a roomie video❤
Keep posting we love your content.
🤩wow new video! Nothing could be better
Really loving these longer videos 🫶🏽
I also enjoy the longer videos! It doesn’t even need fancy editing or anything but I need at least background music or something constantly playing with speaking bc I personally cannot stand silence 😂
Great video as always.
I feel a cool video idea, would be diving into and exploring metal more closely and the different sub-genres. Like Sabaton is probably the most popular modern metal band but haven't seen any video featuring them apart from one video that got claimed.
25:27 Such a Sweet Transition from Greatest Love of All to Hard to Say Im Sorry
Joel you should do a video of pentatonix version vs the original
I guess Pentatonix will won 😅
I cried watching Pentatonix' Bohemian Rhapsody rendition while I've never to the Queen's original 😂
They're that good ...
@@voneychiu2828 ude I think they would so win as well but i just wanna see joel react to there music becuase its so good.
The problem with doing a Pink Floyd video is that they are hard to assess based on songs given that they were very much an album band and their best work was concept albums that should be viewed as whole works instead of broken in parts. If you were to look at individual songs I’d recommend “Wish You Were Here”, “Comfortably Numb” and “Money”, also “Time” and “Dogs” but my personal favourite is “Echoes” which is a 23 minute masterpiece that took the whole second side of the “Meddle” album. Another song from that album “Fearless “ is one that really makes me feel stronger.
I've only heard a few of their songs, but my favorite by far is "Wish You Were Here". "Another Brick in the Wall' is pretty good too.
we should do a breakdown of the wall album that inspires pink's depression and break anything stuff at a motel and tearing down the wall after 5 decades
7:00 The Monkees being here makes me so happy
Same! And I feel bad for "bullying" Joel so much in previous videos about saying they're a fake band, it seemed that's why he had to make the comment 😂
@@curlysue1134 I’ve been really getting into their music lately and I’m glad he added the “fake band that became a real band” because I would’ve been mentally screaming if he didn’t 🤣
Yay some MJ 🔥.Did you have an wonderful birthday Joel ? And you do not look old at all you look like as if you are in your early 30's
He’s 36
It’s so mind flipping when the genre changes drastically!
What ChatGPT didn't tell you is that with there all times list they will weigh eras different due to songs and albums charting for different average lengths of time due to accessibility of music at the time and how music got consumed and counted for their charts. Basically for singles it better to have been an artist back in the 60's when singles didn't chart for that long and bad to be an artist today (in the late 2010's onward) when huge hits chart forever. However for albums it is better to have been an artist today (mid 2010's onwards) when albums debut at #1 and then fall off pretty quickly and bad back in the 60's when albums took their time climbing up the charts peaking really high for a long time. However any artist can be super high regeardless of any era if they perform amazingly well enough on the charts upon release.
Also The Hot 100 has had recurrency rules since the early 90's and the Billboard 200 has rotated recurrency rules in and out and (i believe) since 2008 the Billboard 200 does not have recurrency rules anymore. Older artists only chance to move up the list is through having big iconic albums stick around on the Billboard 200.
Also this is extremely US based and you didn't grow up here and weren't alive when these charts started so I wouldn't be surprised if you don't know the chart impact of all of the artists.
Thank God for your comment. I was about to write almost the same thing. I was kinda gagged when they were surprised by Usher's position on the list. I mean, the man is the most important musician of the 2000s in terms of charts. He might not have the longevity he deserves, but what he did when he was at his peak is impressive. It was a massive hit after a massive hit. And many artists don't have this huge success in terms of charts in America as they have in the world. So, it's difficult to judge based on what we know from the impact they have today. Hot 100, for example, doesn't measure impact for the future. It measures the success of a song or an album at the moment they are released.
The two that shocked me for were they ranked was Olivia Newton John and Chicago
I love that for Celine Dion he played the recorder version of My Heart Will Go On in the background lol.
Funnily weird ranking 😅
There are artists on this list I've never heard of, and many more than I've only heard of but never heard any of their songs. There is so much music out there.
This list is curated based on physical sales. Big or small back in day every artist sold physical so they will always rank above today's big act in term of sales. But there are other metrics also like audience reach , demand of live show etc where many of these won't make top 50.
Joel should check out Triumph. Great Canadian rock band with a severely underrated frontman. Rik Emmit had insane vocal range and was probably one of the best live performers of the 80’s
Remember this is a list for the USA, as billboard is an American domestic chart. For those not American you may not understand just how massive someone like Janet Jackson was at her peak stateside . Furthermore acts like Queen were not as massive in America compared to other parts of the world.
Most successful artists 👀 Its going to be quite a list to go through. Wonder who'll be featured this time around. Danke for sharing, hope everyone is doing well. Keep It Up Bro 🎶 😎 👊
LMAO, Rod's subdued "yeahh" when Prince showed up on the list. Also Joel's reactions to some of the artists is always hilarious. Internationally renowned megastars and he's like "really?" Ha ha ha. His reaction to Santana gets me every time. 😅😂😂
😁
No Coldplay seems like a crime. I get that it was from billboards but still.
Love MJ ❤
The ranking is based on a point system assigning a certain for every week they spent on the two main Billboard Charts. Highest point for every week at #1. All their singles and albums are counted. They also adjusted certain time periods like the 80s when the labels pressured the charts into increasing the chart turnover rate so songs don't spent too much time at number 1, meaning they get more #1 hit songs.
MJ #1
This is so funny and light hearted! Yay for having Rod Kim again, but how did he not know Britney Spears sang "Toxic." He should know that lol! It was pretty nostalgic hearing: Creedence Clearwater Revival, John Denver, and The Eagles. I agree when you thought The Eagles would be higher on the list too. The are definitely iconic, even though there is just one original member in the band today, I think? I laughed hard when you jokingly said that you identify musically as a girl! I love it when the edgy Joel comes out! More please!🤣
Four weeks ago???
@@Kash650bro I was saying the same thing like how

I knew it was Britney, I tried making a joke because we mentioned it earlier but I didn't realize I was interrupting the AI prompt 😅
KING MJ 👑
Neil Diamond was Mom's favorite singer along with Celine. She also loved Air Supply.
Hey roomie!! Just wondering when new single 👀, also ur the 3rd top artist in my wrapped. Ty for the music.
Roomie was so confused about Janet Jackson high on the list, he couldnt say a word.
Probably because Billboard is a US thing and Janet was not really big in Sweden.
And I don't think he wantet to offend fans
@@elli845 that makes sense.
It’s cos Janet practically ignores Europe when promoting everything. Seems to go to Japan all the time but Europe is ignored for decades at a time and she just gets forgotten in the grand scheme of things.
Janet should be appreciated more.
DEFINITELY do something on Pink Floyd! Love the videos!
Has Roomie ever done a video on artists that crossed Genres? People like Beyonce, MGK, and others
Difficult thing to discuss in modern music because everyone mixes genres now. Many musicians these days even talk about how the entire concept of "the genre" is "dead" because there aren't solid genres anymore and every artist kinda just does whatever they want. The fact that some country charts reject some artists if they aren't "country enough" is really the only exception that exists at all anymore, and even that is pretty much always just based on the artist or lyrics not being in line with the conservative values a lot of country folk hold and not about the musical style.
How the hell did The Weeknd not make the top 100 list??
Yesss please do a Pink Floyd episode!!!!!!!!
i want a full breakdown of the wall album and tell me what is this all about
do a video about underground music throughout the years I think that would be great
You should do like a top 20 or top 100 most successful bands. Bands specifically haha or maybe do a top 20 list of each era? Too 20 hair metal bands too 20 emo bands etc 😂
Surprised by the lack of Bowie and ABBA
The list is based only on success in the United States! Bowie is among the 10 most successful UK acts of all time! In the UK he had 11 number 1 albums and 36 in the top 10, as well as 25 songs in the top 10 and several of them number 1! Don't you see that most artists here are only known in America?
Prince 💜
I loved Chicago growing up.
How can anyone dislike Whitney Houston. Possibly the greatest female vocals of all time, along with Aretha Franklin, Etta James and Mariah Carey.
Taylor Swift being in the Top 10 as the only artists to debut in the 2000s is crazy. I know she is going to go up a few ranks in the future.
This list was actually created a few years ago before the eras tour and some of her recent albums, I believe with an updated version she'd be in the top 5, possibly challenging for top 3!
crappy music lol
@@ghost247music8 apparently a lot of people do not agree with you :) and your opinion is as irrelevant as anything. her impact isnt though.
@@Taylors1989she’s not bad but extremely overrated
Tayloverrated Swift, the only thing good about her is probably her songwriting which is just "good" but apart from that she's overrated asf!
you should do top producers like top 100 producers
Michael and Madonna are my parents. They made ME 😅 their message and music captivated me and now I make music and know English because of them
Weird.
@@RJS1974How is it weird for someone to love and to relate to a singer? And to be inspired by their music? Leave people alone and let them live! Stop being so judgmental!
@@MeanGirls1003 Your chat name seems accurate. Why are you judging me?
“Go Your Own Way” sung by & about Stevie Nicks & Lindsey Buckingham after they split up before the band split. She stayed with Fleetwood Mac & he left obviously and I know he did solo stuff because he did “Holiday Road” the song from the original “Nat’l Lampoons Vacation” from ‘82 or whenever it was released with Chevy Chase, Beverly D’angelo
If you’re ever looking to switch up content, I’d love to see you review Galantis, a Swedish DJ Duo made of 2 pop producers that created a pop electronic type style.
Im sorry but the coincidence of Ghost (the lyrics being “if I can’t be close to you,I’ll settle for the ghost of you”) and then the seamless transition into the song “close to you” made me happy for no reason whatsoever
We may argue allot about the ranking, probably due to our confirmation bias, but if you actualy think about it is almost perfectly on point!
You should react to video game themes, like Halo, Assassin’s Creed, Battlefield or Humankind.
tru man .. i love ezio family
I love Three Dog Night, but coud you pick a more obscure song to play? sheesh . Joy to The World, Mama Told Me, or An Old Fashioned Love song would have been more in line with their popular songs.
Most of the list are unknown and only known in US not in the world
It would be cool to see a list like these but with songwriters
Tina Turner, Cher, Shania Twain, Alannis??? 😮
I would love a Pink Floyd video!!!
I like seeing a bunch of great artists in no particular order, but it's really hard to take a ranked list seriously when it puts Queen at 87th
I frigging love Chicago ❤️
Everyone in the world knows Herb Alpert's song. It's called Spanish Flea and it is basically the number one "I don't know the name of this song, but I've heard it forever".
I am also surprised by Santana. He has always been part of the collab. I guess I should check his history.
Props to Mariah for only only achieving 19 #1 songs, but writing 18 of them!
The change in genres and decades is totally my playlist lol
17:50 Celine Dion was the queen of love songs in the 90s! Songs I liked I didn’t know who it was but found out it was Celine! 😮
And I can’t believe Garth Brooks toured so long and so many people saw him over and over he’s prob a millionaire 😆
And you confused me at the end there 😂
What a crazy, eclectic list. Is Rod lying on the couch in the dark over there?
👀
I wanted to see a list based on your opinion because there's really weird stuff in these lists, like it seems like whoever pays more to then gets a better spot, for instance, Ed Sheeran is top 5 in every platform and was put in top 80+
What a peculiar list.
Usher made the Superbowl this year, i think it make totally sense he is on that list (social media made that perf explode), ppl rediscover/discover his hits like Rihanna in 2023.
Notable artists that did not make the list:
•Backstreet Boys
•Nirvana
•ABBA
•Christina Aguilera
•Avril Lavigne
•Amy Winehouse
•Frank Sinatra
•Snoop Dogg
What seems to be the common trend? Who am I missing? Did one of these appear in the video and I missed it?
Also ABBA
REPORT THE VIDEO! IT IS ONLY BASED ON SUCCESS IN THE UNITED STATES, LET'S REMEMBER THAT ABBA IS A SWEDISH BAND! THEY DOMINATED EUROPE AND ARE MUCH MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE UNKNOWN LOCAL AMERICAN PEOPLE WHO APPEAR HERE!
Blackout album ❤❤is a masterpiece
I always expect Avril Lavigne to be on a list but she never appears🥲😂
I was confused for 28 min straight... LOL
Same ..
This list is an interdimensional journey of random but mostly underrated artists.
I can't belive there is no Nirvana on this list
I’m pretty sure the billboard chart started in 1958, which would explain why Elvis is lower than usual. He was going strong for 4 years prior to the list so stuff like hound dog and jailhouse rock wouldn’t have been counted towards his total. If it was he’d be top 2 easy
Roomie is the ultimate channel to watch while eating
Yes that's true 😊
Strangest list ever 🤷♂️
My first phoneless concert was Jack White. I was first annoyed, but then realized it's more enjoyable because you don't have a bunch of distractions and phones recording video between you and the artist.
what do you make of the eagles miming in recent concerts
Bob Seger finally made one of these videos! And I am personally offended that Joel doesn't know him
He should get to him
old time rock and roll!!
got to love CCR
Iconic band
This order seems so strange. Obviously Joel doesn't really know what's going on either. But I guess something about the amount of $ earned per artist per record, and I wonder if it's taking out lawsuits or something.
This list is based on the billboards list of artists based mainly on the chart toppings. This list doesn't mean the success of artists. The successfulness of artists depend on how much people love their music and buy them. Artists who topped the charts so many times have advantage on this list. For example, barbra ranked at no.6 sold only like 100m records while michael jackson sold over 400m record being ranked lower than her. Barbra had tons of albums released most of which appeared on charts, but they didnt sell better for long periods. So it was an advantage for her to appear higher on the list. And also elvis sold more than any solo artist on the list but appeared on the list at 13. Artists like elvis, mj and queen had albums which stood longer on charts and sold more like the beatles who are the most successful.
how TF is Lynard Skynard not on this list????
I honestly think this list is absolutely criminal for not having ABBA on this list.
