    Doug while being a technician seems to have completely changed his idea of medvedeva because she was sweet and he got to know her a little more.
    He used to just call her and zagitova the “zagmeds” and mostly dismissed them.
    I love medvedeva the most and I agree that She’s grown wonderfully but I just feel like a part of doug’s reaction is kind of “oh she’s not just some Russian..” anymore..she’s also a nice sweet earnest girl who skates with Brian.
    The difference in respect and appreciation is huge. I sense almost a bit of disdain towards Russia and preference towards Canada. (Tad of an understatement)

      Russian media already posted transcripts from this TSL episode, and people are wondering what kind of agreement Brian made with other federations that makes him feel confident that Evgeniya's flutz would not be getting negative GOEs after he announced in his first interview that she does have flutz and Doug just confirmed that it is still there. It is interesting to see how corrupted judges really are when it comes to Brian Orser and Medvedeva.

    • @ПодрывУстоев-ц5ц
      @ПодрывУстоев-ц5ц 6 років тому +2

      In my memory this is going to be the first time when coach acknowledges that his skater has flutz problem, but includes 3 lutzes into programs and expects that technical panel won't notice wrong edge on every one of them. I hope it won't happen and we will see honest protocols this season. Otherwise, skaters with correct edges on Lutz will be in a disadvantage.

    • @ivy456
      @ivy456 6 років тому +1

      Подрыв Устоев That theory doesn't even make sense because Evgenia was getting positive GOEs on the lutz without Brian. So shouldn't it be the same under Brian? Unless there's different rules for Eteri's girls... Also I get that Doug is biased and how annoying that is but these crazy theories in the comments don't make any sense and need to stop. If you're going to criticize (which you have every right to) at least come up with arguments instead of making up crazy theories like Doug does.

      I love her style and the way she looks. She looks and skates like a WOMAN; not a child because that’s what she is and I admire her for it. She grins as if she doesn’t care what they think and I applaud her for it because what is being promoted is TOXIC and UNHEALTHY. She’s hot and she knows it, too. Healthy is darn sexy. Funny how they won’t say exactly what happened to Gracie. They talk about how much they “loved” “old Gracie” but apparently, “old Gracie” wasn’t good enough for someone because she starved herself, too.

    I liked his tidbits on Medvedeva, etc, but I raised my eyebrows during the comment that Liza's weight is key to better PCS. If the weight was directly affecting her skating, fine, but I doubt losing a few pounds would automatically raise her PCS. I just don't see a strong direct correlation there. Also, I like how singles coaches sometimes talk about pair skating so simplistically. All you need is speed and jumps lol. I'm glad they mentioned speed though, because it's not always as easy to notice that on TV. And I have similar lukewarm feelings as he does about Whitney Houston in skating.

    • @bridgetkrstic8723
      @bridgetkrstic8723 6 років тому +1

      Yeah plenty of people, including knowledgeable skating people, seem to overlook how challenging actual pair skating is and getting two bodies to skate together in a way that is world class. There has been many a pair team that could do a sbs jump but wasn’t more than average on the other elements.

    PR and blade take-off is not a Russian thing, Gabby, Kaetlyn, Satoko, all do this. In fact, the only ladies who don't do this are Russian; Tsurskaya, Liza Tuktamysheva, and Sotskova. But I'm surprised you think Alina's spins were slow; she had the fastest spins of the day...

    I'm glad you guys didn't let Doug get away with a glowing endorsement of Gabby Daleman, though that comment is more or less symptomatic of his issues as a pundit. Great at explaining some technical aspects of skating, but how reliable is it when - by complete coincidence - Daleman and Osmond come out on top in his estimation? He goes from suggesting Tutberidze's skaters are all doping in February to being silent on that assertion now that one of her former skaters is at his rink, then criticizes the Russians for restricting their diet but perpetuates the idea that slimmer skaters get higher components. Even if he wasn't flat out saying Tuktamysheva needed to lose 8-10 pounds - which, she looks far better than she has in the last two years, landing her first 2A+3T since, what, 2014? - it's continuing to amplify that sort of comment that encourages restrictive behavior from athletes and coaches.

  • @JS-uz4ji

    lol, did not know she actually forgot a part of the lp. I don't love the program, but considering that and the fact that it's so early, I'm interested to see how this program develops. I hope people will be patient in seeing improvements(a few of which are already visible); I'm already reading ludicrous comments like people expected problems to be completely fixed in a matter of 2-ish months.
    And well, you really don't get much ice time either way in korea. The conditions are obviously better than when yuna started out, but the rinks are few, crowded, and still kind of suck. It's incredible what yuna has done for skating in korea(both influence-wise and financially), so I can't stand it when someone says she hates skating or is uninvolved post-competition.

    1:13 Evgenia Medvedeva - I love how happy she looks doing the short, let the girl enjoy her life. Agree that Libertango isn’t as interesting a music choice. And do we think she’ll still get the Russian bump in her scores or know if the federation is still pushing for her?
    15:18 Alina Zagitova - I think there’s too many music changes in the short, even worse than Alena K’s music. I was happy she didn’t use any singing in Carmen, it was better than the short.
    20:56 Elena Radionova - I was surprised that her and Elizaveta were here, didn’t expect either of them to continue. But she loves to skate so more power to her.
    22:35 Elizaveta Tuktemysheva - since her lutz is so good why can’t she do a triple lutz triple toe? She’s gonna get killed in the short with a toe toe combination. I agree her skating has a masculine aesthetic.
    27:36 Polina Tsurskaya - her technique is amazing! She gets so much height and doesn’t start rotating till the top of the jump. Amazing but I hear she’s unwell?
    29:30 Maria Sotskova - I loved her short! The complete opposite of boring! And it felt genuine to me. Jonathan please don’t always apologize for liking her, she’s a very good skater. But I was really disappointed that she’s repeating her long.
    32:22 Tarasova/Morozov - I think the long program music is a big mistake. The song is so repetitive it’s impossible to listen to for 4 minutes and stay interested.
    37:20 Brief mention of Sinitsina/Katsolopov, Stolbova/Buikin, Popova/Mozgov
    38:30 Mikhael Kolyada - he definitely has world champion potential but Doug is right that he can’t keep popping jumps.
    40:15 Dimitri Aliev - I’m with Jonathan, he is very elegant and I’m a fan.
    44:20 Javier Fernandez - “the Tiger Woods of Spain” lol what?
    49:37 Andrew Torgashev - I was also surprised that he was so happy after his program since he started kinda shaky but I get what Doug is saying about rotating everything being a big deal.
    55:33 US ladies on the junior Grand Prix, coach hopping, and over-involved parents.
    59:40 Ye Lim Kim - I didn’t think she was anything special.
    1:03:48 Alexandra Trusova - with great talent comes great responsibility and great pressure. From what we know of the training environment with Eteri, like with what Evgenia says to Brian Orser, we believe that Trusova is being exploited more than respected by her coaches and that’s what makes her and the others hard to watch.
    1:10:45 Nguyen/Kolesnik - they looked great in the short, I thought she had a great line. Didn’t like the music mashup for the long.
    1:14:50 Stellato/Bartholomay - disasterous short: slow, hate the music, it showed off Deanna bec Nate looked like he didn’t want to be there.
    1:21:10 Brief discussion about Jason Brown, Gabrielle Daleman

    9:47 So Doug had been told by Orser that after short program at Olympics Etery told to Zhenya "You are done, go have babies"?!
    It can't be anything but utter bullshit no mater what you think of Etery as a person.
    First Zhenya got world record score for that program, it was beaten by Alina 10 minutes later, but still was excellent result. Second, whoever watched ladies competition could not have noticed how close and supportive Etery was to Zhenya during entire event.

I actually had no doubt that it was main reason for David's and Brian's trip and long stay. I am shocked Doug's comment about the reason Orser included 6 lutzes into two programs. I want the guest to be aware that it's Evgenia who would have to deal with the romours and stories discussed in this video. Unless Evgenia wanted to be spread out, I sometimes concern why some Americans or Canadians are so talkative. Can't they have imagination? I feel it is very unprofessional that Cricket Club (brian and tracy) is spreading stories how bad Russian environments are. I do not support any negative environment for training, but this girl, Evgenia, may be returning to Russia in the future (to live). It will be HER who would have to deal with the Russian public's reactions due to the conversation told and discussed here. I don't know if Brian or Tracy wanted this guest to have it open. I would be pissed off if my home people spread stories how bad my home country is. Indeed, Evgenia herself does not say anything negative about Russia to the media, but the people who she trusts do! I remember reading article that the writer talked about incident between Mao and Rafael (Mao did not tell him why she can't return back to US), the writer blamed Mao that she is close minded person, but, well you know. She just knew what happens if she speaks up. THIS.

      Not only Russian media: this TSL interview created heated and even more exaggerated gossips in Japan about Medvedeva and Eteri. Some figure skating fans translated the Russian gossips into Japanese (sometimes via English: Russian to English, then English to Japanese), and posted at their sites. Lots of distortion of the interview/story occurred during the translations because they are amateur translators and more importantly, they didn't do fact check by watching the original TSL interview before they posted their translations. I notified some of these translators of their mistranslations, and some of their posts are now removed.

      @@Keepinitreal55 Thank you for the comment. It doesn't matter if it is true or not. I am at shock hearing man discussing such things and in such manner. Once on TV show (Russian channel 1) world famous coaches and figure skaters (Tarasova, Platov, Navka and others) discussed that athletes might be so overstressed that coaches use absolutely unexpected ways to make them ready for the competition. Eg Tarasova poured s bottle of water onto Platov as we was too nervous and they remembered that and all athletes said that all great coaches can find not standard decision. We never know why any words could be said. But being experienced and mature person that man isn't trying to understand why or what could be reasons but just takes pieces if information and they try to interpret it as if Evgeniya is a poor girl who was oppressed, neglected, etc. She could cry after first trainings feeling some relief after relocation, worries, etc. It's normal and words about "best training in her life" are usual politeness and gratitude. But the guys try to interpret it as if she never had good trainings. She always hugged and kissed Eteri for a decade and never looked unhappy. The change in her relation is too sudden. And frankly speaking, she doesn't look happy now - she wants to SHOW that she is happy. Every empathic person can see it. I really wish her good luck.

It's normal to be emotional but relating this to judging previous coaching is not correct. Zhenya always hugged Eteri, laughed and smiled. In all interviews she used to say that she had lots character traits from Eteri, she was her mum on the ice, etc.

      annushka0113 i think it highly depends on the skater. For example i love Kostornaya's programs of his; i feel she is able to make it her own. On the other hand I perceive Zagitova to be more mechanical/exectuion-y/robotic about it. I also loved Alena Kanysheva's super packed free at her last JGP, because I feel it was a good fit for her overall.

  • @hellsbellsmichelle

    Evgenia's short programme was sublime. The 2A - exquisite. The lutz is better in that it's now only on the rake and spin rocker, and not the entire blade. The free still has work needing. I'd love to see Evgenia with 3L 3L combination, I think she could make that stick and make it exquisite. I'm not sure her free music is the right choice for her, I think she could spend a night chilling with Jason Brown listening to music and find something better. I think her friendship with Jason is really helping her transition to a new way of life. I think she'll do brilliant in the next few years.
    Elizavita - has always been my favourite Russian skater, because she's a woman, like Wagner is a woman, like Costner is a woman. Tuktamysheva is a woman, and probably the only woman to come out of Russia in recent years. She really needs a coach and music to suit her more, and she'd probably benefit from a move to Canada too.
    Zagitova, free programme is awful. Thank Christ it's not an Olympic season. Zagitova is still just a wee girl, she needs to grow and support. Her lutz is rubbish, and the music edit - OMG, it's just awful.

    with Tarasova and Morozov also, didn't hear you mention it, but Maxim Trankov helped them with the LP, but not the SP. Maybe he should do both. Many people didn't like their short.
    Also, surprisingly, your comments this time are quite in line with those on the Russian side, even people who witnessed it all in person say pretty much the same. Zagitova seems very tense, seems like Eteri is keeping the "tough love" tactics with her, Medvedeva seems to be exploring her talents she had not chance to develop before, and it shows (but these bangs are not her thing), Tuktamysheva is in great shape (people who saw her in person actually say she looks very petite, camera does not do her justice), very confident, but it's visible she is trained by a man like a man :) Tsurskaya seems to have troubles with old injuries, she cried after one of the programs, holding the back. But she looks impressive on the ice. Aliev stands out among the male skaters because he clearly has more natural talent. Don't remember if you mentioned Voronov, but he was quite a surprise, skating that well at 30.
    As for Trusova, and her sadness, she reminds me of gymnasts, when they do floor routine. She does the poses, but you see it in her eyes, she is thinking about her hardest element and where and how she should do them. Very concentrated.

    "Her jumps are perfect but she should lose weight". Uhhh, how about no. Liza gets one of the tallest jumps in the competition and you don't get that strength from being skinny. It's appalling that you would shame her for not looking like Medvedeva or Lipnitskaya (the latter we know now has suffered from anorexia her whole competitive life). Instead of wondering how Liza would jump if she was starved, why don't we wonder how Medvedeva would skate if she was able to carry the musculature that the sport demands?? Instead of forever having to watch her diet because people will comment on how heavy she looks on the ice?? Because I always wonder.

    It's interesting to think about Zagitovas phantom versus Hanyus phantom program. They both used it as the reigning Olympic champ, in the post Olympic year. The difference is that Yuzu had to essentially beg to use the music, and turned it into a cohesive, grand, commanding program (despite terrible injury that season), and Alinas is erratic, rushed, and jumbled, to be kind. Sadly, Alina has no autonomy in her career, and everything she messes up is blamed on Eteri, and anything she does successfully is written off as natural talent or luck. She is a gifted jumper, and hard worker, and deserves much better from her coaching team. It will be interesting to see Evgenia grow, and watch their rivalry unfold. I have a feeling Evgenia will be more successful in the long run, because it already feels like Alinas is being sabotaged by Eteri, who only cares about her junior girls and their so called quads.

    • @colormyworld249
      @colormyworld249 6 років тому +6

      I think this is a myth. Maybe Evgenia never got a choice in music. But other Eteri skaters have. Yulia picked Schindler's list and also you don't give up on love. Alina picked Samson and Delilah. And Alina wanted Carmen for last year, but they told her she was too young, and let her do it this year. I think they do have some say in their programs, maybe Evgenia didn't

Not sure if he is real insider or pretends to be one. So few days ago he bragged that Brian pulled some strings at the last Olympics to get VM 122 for free program, instead of 118 that they were getting at every competition up until the Olympics free skate. He sounded very proud of the influence on the judges that Brian has. If you get a chance, next time you interview Doug, please ask him about that and also if that is the strategy that makes Brian feel confident that Medvedeva's flutzes won't get e or ! in the future.

    I find ending the music mid-point quite offensive from a program for the Olympic gold medalist. I didn't like it when Max Aaron did it but I also get that he doesn't really get to work with good choreographers. Having the reigning Olympic champion skate to a program so badly choreographed with horrible music edit that just stops out of nowhere is like Eteri showing how much she doesn't give a crap about the sport and yet her students are getting all the hight marks.

This persecution in a gadfly under the name FFKR gives its fruits and parents, on the example of Medvedev, understand on whose side more opportunities, because Tarasova is a Putin voivod in figure skating who has easy money from state TV channels. It's shameful and shameful to watch FFKR pay Medvedev's foreign coach and stay in Canada, it turns out in figure skating. Russia does not have a coaching school and can not find domestic coaches.

    Some of you nervous nellys get all a titter whenever someone mentions 'weight'. Doug can rightfully scrutinize someone's fitness or overall 'look' as both a professional and a skating fan. A skater can be in FANTASTIC shape as a young woman, but yet in just 'good' shape as a *skater*. There's a difference. All these fanboys and fangirls saying "she's a beautiful young woman!! HOW DARE YOU!!" really need to get over themselves.
    Both of these two things can be true:
    1) She is a BEAUTIFUL, ATHLETIC, full-bodied woman.
    2) Aesthetically and technically, it might further help her to reduce her weight for purposes of her skating (rotation speed, flow, look, etc).
    BOTH THINGS CAN AND ARE TRUE.
    I always love it when Doug comes on, cause he gives us REAL TALK. He doesn't sugar coat. He doesn't say things that are politically correct. He speaks to us as the knowledgeable fans that we are. And yet, you guys give him a bad time over a comment made about someone's weight that was totally valid. Gimme a break. I hope Doug continues to come to TSL and speak FREELY, and ignore the busybody riff-raff.

    • @jcaslove1
      @jcaslove1 6 років тому +4

      If you're saying that Liza should work on her fitness to help her skating and aesthetic, that's different than saying that her components would go up just by dropping a few pounds. That's really debatable. Perhaps we are just misinterpreting what he was trying to say a bit.

    • @BrentWolgamott
      @BrentWolgamott 6 років тому +2

      Can’t it be both though? Can’t she work on her fitness to improve her skating, rotation speed, flow, push, etc, and ALSO that it could help her components? And if so, isn’t that OK? I also feel like Doug was saying “components“ as shorthand for everything that is subjective, including GOE. IF she could work on her fitness, get in even better shape, would the +2’s on a SS go to +3’s or 4’s? What about the spins? Now she’s spinning even faster, more centered, do they go up?
      I guess my point is that skaters, both male and female have been called out for not being in “skater shape”. I remember Michael Weiss looking like he just left the burger joint one year. It’s not sexist to ruminate on the weight of a female skater or her overall resulting look on the ice if she DOES get more fit. Again, Doug gives us real talk. I appreciate the candor.

    • @BrentWolgamott
      @BrentWolgamott 6 років тому +4

      Yeah Evan, I’m not going to call you an idiot. But you’re (again!) overreacting like a wounded bird here. It’s COMPETITIVE FIGURE SKATING. These things can be decided by the littlest things. Obviously she’s better than “just good” or “decent”, prima facie. The issue is how she relates to the OTHER skaters in her field. If she’s below them, then comparatively, she’s “just good”. Get it? And that difference could mean getting on the world team, or not.
      If Doug, in all his years of experience, is giving her that criticism, then that’s a VALID OPINION.

    • @SassyTableCloth
      @SassyTableCloth 6 років тому +4

      Brent's Lucky Slot Channel Liza looks the same now as she did in her best season when she won all the major events. I think Evan is right and she's just more muscular. Think of Midori Ito who had a similar build and was an outstanding jumper. And "The issue is how she relates to the OTHER skaters in her field" - she did better at the test skates than most, including Medvedeva and Zagitova. No reason to worry about her being in shape at this point

    • @BrentWolgamott
      @BrentWolgamott 6 років тому +3

      Again, it’s not about Evan being “right”. He may be, he may not. It’s about *Doug* and his ability to offer a refreshing candor (an OPINION), and not be pounced on by the rabble implying he’s sexist or amoral for offering such. Cause that’s just not right. It’s the predictable “how DARE you!’s” that came that I’m railing against.
