I know gymnastics has evolved and vaults are technically harder in many instances now, But this is still my favourite vault and still the most perfect landing I’ve seen.10 all day for me ❤️Nellie Kim
well a little correction though, nadia was the first to get a ten, nelli was the second gymnast in the history to score a ten just after nadia, but yes, many gymnasts from the 76 games were over-shadowed by nadia, just like her team mate teodora ungureano who was also amazing
Teodora was a very distant 2nd fiddle but she did herself proud at Montreal. Nadia's main rivals were Nelli Kim, an injured Olga Korbut and an aging Ludmilla Tourischeva.
Nadia was a talented prodigy and was the rising star of 1975; great things were expected of her at Montreal and she delivered against more experienced and equally talented rivals.
@gbe101 As mentioned in Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated the week after Nadia got all her 10s, part of the Nadia-mania was because she was so young and "cute." Olga had had the same audience affect four years earlier, despite not being the best gymnast on the Soviet squad. In 1980 when Nadia was 18 and had developed a woman's figure and was no longer an adorable little pixie, the media attention turned to Emilia Eberle, the new Romanian cutie.
Uhhh... and a better FX worker than Nadia. Give the woman her due, please. Nadia was in a league of her own on BB and UB, but not on FX and certainly not on VT. Those two events belonged to Kim back then.
Well, Kim was a power gymnast. Pretty typical in the Soviet style, but it did come back to hurt her. And I wasn't trying to devalue her abilities on VT and FX. 2 time Olympic gold medalist on floor is a big accomplishment. And Nadia was never as good on vault as she was, though most Romanians weren't very good vaulters.
I like Nellie Kim the perfect landing in a perfect position in the vault.McKayla Maroney in the 2012 olympics could not stick her landing fall down in the second vault.Ibiza the winner was not a clean perfect position in the landing.I think that Nadja Comaneci her the beam routine in 1976 was a cleaner than in the 2012.Today they make only the most difficult moves. It should the most perfect one should win the gold
Moronic "Baby Boomers vs Millennials" have the 1956 vs 2012 Olympics when Baby Boomers were only in elementary school at that time. That lady was Silent Generation. THIS IS A BABY BOOMER!
Elliot Applebaum She is probably using hand signals with her personal coach. Only certain coaches were allowed on the floor, and that is how they were communicating.
Her coach had beforehand told her to aim at the spot where she was going to land because up to then she had not been making a perfect landing. Nelli was at first unimpressed by her coach's advice but he persisted and told her he wanted to see style and precision. He wanted to recognise Kim, reliable and serious. The smile on her face says it all. as she acknowledges his contribution to her perfect 10.
nadia got famous because she was the first and she recieved it 7 times in the same competition, there are many men who achieved tens but not in montreal 1976
She was a slightly better FX worker than Nadia, when Nadia was little. But when she got older she was just as good, if not better than Kim. And Nadia wasn't even that bad on VT, Kim never beat Nadia in an AA once.
in fact, Nelli Kim was the first who got a perfect ten. I don´t like the "nadiamania", although Comaneci was a very good gymnast, i prefer Nelli Kims art,and i don´t like the fact that only Comaneci is mentioned while all the other great gymnasts fall into forgotten. One should watch the Olympics of 1976 the whole competitionand make a picture for oneself.
Also, I believe men couldn't be on the floor with the female gymnasts either. (Don't really know how this is at all fair or sensible, and what do you do with the male gymnasts? But, anyway...) Larisa Latynina was team coach then.
Yes, they were the champs *_in BEIJING._* I'm a WHITE gymnast & not racist, but in MY naked eyes, the Olympics is garbage which awards HOST COUNTRIES undeserved gold medals. Wouldn't you agree that most of the best gymnasts are white??
LOL I don't know who's the guy in the stand hand-signalling Nellie Kim. She's half Korean, meaning her father is Korean. Unless a Korean man suddenly had Caucasian features, that man could not have been her father!
Kim never beat Nadia in the AA because Kim was unimpressive on BB and UB. She wasn't in Nadia's league when it came to being a well-rounded gymnast. I wasn't debating that in the first place. I was saying that you should give Kim the respect she's entitled to on VT and FX. That's all.
Nelli was(and still is)a very very very beautiful lady.
I know gymnastics has evolved and vaults are technically harder in many instances now,

Yah
Nelli Kim, a beautiful gymnast. Such an Asian beauty!
I love to see this girl , especially in the floor ex , nelly kim was a queen
Teodora was a very distant 2nd fiddle but she did herself proud at Montreal.
Nadia's main rivals were Nelli Kim, an injured Olga Korbut and an aging Ludmilla Tourischeva.
The faster the more elegant the most beautiful. Nellie Kim made in CCCP
never seen it from this angle before
great quality
aw this is nice, I like her
Nadia was a talented prodigy and was the rising star of 1975; great things were expected of her at Montreal and she delivered against more experienced and equally talented rivals.
Nellie is a K Girl 😎 ❤
i love nelli kim and all. but back then, the leo's were just so weird
oh great.

What on earth is the hand gesturing with the man in the crowd? 🤔
No, Nadia was the first to get a10 in the Uneven Bars a day before Nelli's Vault.
So weird not seeing the yurchencho vault entry
Uhhh... and a better FX worker than Nadia. Give the woman her due, please. Nadia was in a league of her own on BB and UB, but not on FX and certainly not on VT. Those two events belonged to Kim back then.

Nadia won the all round...Nellie was second. The Soviets won the team.. Romania was second.

Actually Nelli Kim is ranked higher than Nadia overall, but does it really matter. They were/are both still champions.
Big smile Nelli kim... LMAO
Moronic "Baby Boomers vs Millennials" have the 1956 vs 2012 Olympics when Baby Boomers were only in elementary school at that time. That lady was Silent Generation. THIS IS A BABY BOOMER!
Does anyone know, who is the man making signs to Nellie, what does it mean and what does she "answer"? Thanks!
Maybe back in the 80s... in the US, all the aspiring gymnasts want to be like Nastia or Shawn...
what does she do at the end????
Elliot Applebaum She is probably using hand signals with her personal coach. Only certain coaches were allowed on the floor, and that is how they were communicating.
@gbe101 nadia was the first ever in the olympics to get a 10. and she got 7 of them
Who is Nellie motioning to in the crowd after her vault? Her coach?
yes
Her coach had beforehand told her to aim at the spot where she was going to land because up to then she had not been making a perfect landing. Nelli was at first unimpressed by her coach's advice but he persisted and told her he wanted to see style and precision. He wanted to recognise Kim, reliable and serious. The smile on her face says it all. as she acknowledges his contribution to her perfect 10.
Who's the guy in the stands she was communicating with?
Her coach!
What did Kim imply about such a gesture?
Asking if it was a 10 (as in X roman numeral for 10)
I cant belive this is that the only 10.0 she got?
yes one in the allaround and one in the ef fx
triple twisting Yurchenko on vault? She didn't
nadia got famous because she was the first and she recieved it 7 times in the same competition, there are many men who achieved tens but not in montreal 1976
Better Vaulter yes, but that's it.
Better vaulter and on the floor
Did she even touch it?
She was a slightly better FX worker than Nadia, when Nadia was little. But when she got older she was just as good, if not better than Kim.
And Nadia wasn't even that bad on VT, Kim never beat Nadia in an AA once.
Except at the world championships in 1979
And world championships 1978 and World Cup 1979
She beat Nadia , but didn’t win outright
in fact, Nelli Kim was the first who got a perfect ten.

*_Yes I agree. I'm a gymnast with a ROMANIAN-BORN dad, but I ROLL MY EYES at how the whole gymnastics world worships nadia com._*
Also, I believe men couldn't be on the floor with the female gymnasts either. (Don't really know how this is at all fair or sensible, and what do you do with the male gymnasts? But, anyway...)
Larisa Latynina was team coach then.
She's good but she doesn't have the explosive power of Mary Lou Retton.
are the chinese considered as "white"? they were the team champion in Beijing!
Yes, they were the champs *_in BEIJING._* I'm a WHITE gymnast & not racist, but in MY naked eyes, the Olympics is garbage which awards HOST COUNTRIES undeserved gold medals. Wouldn't you agree that most of the best gymnasts are white??

тренер!
She might be better than Nadia but not that much...
That's all.
Kim was AA champion in the worlds 1979
