Love this latest project, another beautiful winner, and Brilliant seems like a good app. It should be pointed out to them however that presenting a case study about turning dwellings into AirBnB properties (2:53) is particularly tone-deaf in a time of housing crisis and homelessness.
I would dream and dream of retiring to this little home! Except I'd make the upper sleeping area the guest room, so my bad old knees wouldn't have to brave the ladder too often. Really lovely and special.
Absolutely beautiful, Gemma! So elegant and cozy. The sleeping nook is so charming. I love the blend of the old stone walls with the smooth modern wooden walls.
I love it. i would only leave book shelves open as i like looking at books, as well as the sleeping loft. one would not have to move the stairs around, there would be more air flow and it would probably be easier to change the bedding.
I love love love how you work your magic! You are beyond brilliant! Your talent for making something old and broken, new and beautiful again is a gift...I wish your designs could save every building in the world.
I love this! Personally I'll just sleep on the couch because you could never get me to climb up and down that ladder on a daily basis. When I saw the initial video I couldn't imagine fitting in a bathroom, a sitting room, a kitchen, and a bedroom in that space but you did! And it doesn't look squished in, one can argue looking at the design that the house is that big because that's all that was needed, not that you had to make everything fit. I love tiny spaces like this.
Very cute, but the door of the bookshelves opens up into the dining table? I think just leaving that open would make much more sense, since it’s books, not clutter, which turns it into a little library reading house heaven.
I would love to live on an island with no cars. Normally, that pale green is not a color I like, but it really suits this small stone house, as it gives a soothing 'pop' of color without distracting from the exterior stone walls. My only suggestion, for safety sake, is to install a sliding rail between the bed and the opening to the loft, just in case someone sleeping up in the loft, has to get up in the middle of the night, gets out of bed and forgets they are sleeping high up in a loft. (I knew a woman who broke her elbow falling out of a top bunk because she was camping in a log cabin and slept on the top bunk, just like she used to as a girl, and got up in the middle of the night but forgot she was on the top bunk.) But otherwise, Gemma, I am once again inspired by your architecture design for another small vintage building converted to a tiny home. And besides, l love listening to your gentle voice.
That's a tricky one but it's a good one. The solution where the ceiling meets the stone wall is clean, brilliant, and grounds the space. It's a beautiful, warm, and cozy solution which preserves the integrity of the architecture.
This is lovely Gemma! If the sofa/daybed is slightly raised you could have pull out drawers for clothing storage… we have this in our 10m2 cabin, one drawer each, which acts as our holiday wardrobe. All dressing happens down there anyway, as our loft is also only large enough for sleeping. Tiny spaces with 4m+ ceilings feel spacious when you are lounging ❤
Watching your videos is so inspiring! I live in a boring old high rise apartment with an inefficient floor plan but your ideas give me inspiration and hope that everything can be changed for the better 😊
Love the kitten in front of the front door 🤣 I would personally leave the loft little more open with maybe some railing or some see-through wooden partition so it's not so claustrophobic.
So heartwarming that someone cares enough to save these old structures and also makes them so beautifully useable. Thank you for sharing your experiences, talents and inspiring others.
@@Bondoz007 not so much shaming them as saying they (many of them at least) could learn a thing or two. To be fair, most of the apartments I lived in in Japan were fairly old (90's builds) but the rooms were dark, poky and unimaginative. Very cookie-cutter. Not to say there aren't some brilliant designers in Japan, but on the whole, I feel the small dwellings there could be better. Then again, I could probably say that about most of the apartments I've lived in. 🙃
@@Bondoz007I was about it to say, all of these ideas have existed before, especially in Japan. Or even in RVs if we want to look closer at the topic of small space design. Gemma can be congratulated on her process without downgrading any others, especially when using a false generalization.
Well, I mean how many Japanese apartment designers do you know? lol. But yes, at the budget she's working, it definitely outshines many small apartments in Japan. I wouldn't say so in the same price range though.
I came to keep watching these uploads for the accurate and meticulous wording of the spoken text (a perfect mirroring of the architectural side of the endeavours), which obviously serves my general interest in the English language as an eternal ESL user.
Gemma is pretty pragmatic, but -- having worked the construction end of the spectrum with the architect between me and the customer -- I've come to the conclusion that half of the architect's craft resides in linguistic bullshittery.
I am always impressed that every design has at least a washing machine! Always nice to not have to go to the laundromat. I also feel like a lot of small spaces will sacrifice having a washing machine, but yours never leave it out which is great!
It can be a very long drive to a public laundry facility in rural France (and rural Europr in general), and this was a car free island (with or without road to the mainland) if I understood correctly. Small villeages don't necessarily have laundromats like the US.
This turned into a very stylish Zen- like house. With the added summer kitchen outdoors quite the extrakitted tiny house. Always delightef to see plans that dont involve big screens (tv). I think I'd love this, without the door on the bookshelf, and a few chosen artworks. I love the sleeping nook corresponding with the height of that window! ❤
I love everything except the small fridge. It means you assume people are not gonna cook much. But rest is beautiful and especially the bedroom, very clever use of space. Happy weekend.❤❤
We all know that space is going to be used as lazily as possible, and that lounge will forever be the bed while the loft will be storage for sporting gear (or maybe a gaming room). Love it! ❤
It's lovely and serene. The ladder would be too scary for me. Perhaps a 3 foot wide metal balcony (imagining an exterior fire escape but more refined) above the sofa wall with a matching hinged staircase that can be raised and lowered to maintain the floor space. The balcony painted a soft brown would blend and add a little storage too.
Gorgeous! I really loved the detailing of the render on the inside that meets the bare stones. And the kitchen looks stunning like this with the row of upper cabinets. So cool to see the transition from a derelict cottage to polished rendering with such realistic quality. Thanks for picking it!!
I think that for me, thisis your best effort so far. Exquisite! Folding the roofline into the upper wall was brilliant, as it not only minimizes the overhead weight but adds a strong stone horizontal datum to stretch the space. Brava!
Your videos and Project Kamp are my 2 favorite channels. I am always thinking about designing the interior of spaces! Your work is so satisfying and beautiful.
I bet there are others like me who would love to see your plans brought to life, and would be happy to contribute to a crowdfunding effort to help realize the client's dream.
When the initial video tour began showing the interior, I thought, this is not for the faint hearted 😅but, after seeing Gemma’s design, I thought, wow! the owner must be feeling pretty excited now! I sure would be 🙌love it Gemma - your ability to breathe life into old and worn out buildings is amazing! 🎉👍🏻
A beautiful video. The original building looks very much like a small smoke house for herring. There were lots of these in West Wales where I'm from and of course the Brittany fishermen and West Welsh fishermen were inextricably linked for centuries. Wonderful...can I live there please? Haha!
I would have extending the sleeping platform from the other side, over the kitchen, by the lovely bright window, and for more space around a bed. Probably also with a more fixed stair method
Your ideas are amazing. I want so much to join a team go make this vision come to life. It would be so fun to do something like a habitat for humanity home building project with these locations and ideas.
This is an absolute dream!!!! I’m always so happy to see a new video from you pop up on my feed. I don’t mind the wait because I know you are putting thought and effort into your designs. Thank you for sharing your brilliance. ❤

Dear Gemma, I'm a peruvian architect living in France. Your work inspire our profession.

Was getting bored with all the usual here then this popped up... So glad too !
My problem is I could watch one a day

Yes, you’d need to move the table. Doors optional!
Much preferred with the book shelves visible. Looked homier to me

Mindbogingly clever as ever, Gemma.
I love the way you managed to introduce depth and a feeling of hidden secrets in what could have been a very banal space. Another marvellous concept!
I love the tiny home concept, the concealed storage is a bonus!
I love the thoughtfulness you apply to each design. Another brilliant tiny house!

Great ideas, make a good b&b room maybe. Sure kids would love the loft sleeping!

Simply exquisite in so many deceptively simple , nuanced ways. Love it.
the way you think and articulate is extraordinary.
You have put more in 215 sq feet than most apartments that are >500 sq feet. And it all looks so calm and inviting
I'm amazed at how you managed to turn this space into something so lovely and habitable! Brilliant job!
So excited to see you taking this on. It's amazing what you can do with such a small space. Excellent work and thank you for sharing it!
As always, excellent idea and design. Way to go!!! Congratulations.
Always love your transformations. Has anyone ever followed through and done one of these examples you show? Would love to see one if so.
Love the kitten in front of the front door 🤣 I would personally leave the loft little more open with maybe some railing or some see-through wooden partition so it's not so claustrophobic.
Ah the first cat spot!
As usual, you have done a spectacular job with such a small space. Love the design!

Lovely. I'm always interested to see what you come up with next!
It never ceases to amaze me how you can eek out a beautiful living space from such a tiny area. Japanese apartment designers have nothing on you!
*Eke. And I totally agree. I'd happily live full time in any of her designs.
