Holy shit Danny, THANK YOU. I have been saying all of this since Messi has showed up. My friends have been saying “na fam, you wrong.” But like it is super annoying to see other teams advertising that Messi will be their stadium. I don’t think I will be to upset IF MLS is able to convert these fans to MLS fans, but my expectations are low.

My cousin who has been a fan of Seattle since their first MLS game said to me, "If Messi scored a winning goal to beat my team, I wouldnt be upset because its cool to see Messi" and I just couldnt disagree more with this. Its one thing to tip your cap to a talented player but its a whole different thing to abandon supporting your team because of one player.

I've said it since the beginning. When all those people were saying that Miami was going to win MLS Cup just cause Messi joined. Miami had to make the playoffs first, and looking at where they were in the standings at the time, I didn't see that happening. I actually unfollowed MLS on twitter cause I was sick and tired of hearing nothing but MESSI all the time. It was like all the other 28 teams suddenly ceased to exist, unless they were playing Miami. I'm so over it.

MLS needs to increase REVENUE in order the IMPROVE. Point-blank. MLS should be leveraging Messi/Miami as much as possible... for the good of the League as long as it lasts. LEAGUES CUP drew 1.3 Million in total attendance (almost 18k over 77 games), 👍 Messi's Leagues Cup.

    • @dannytradio
      @dannytradio  Рік тому +6

I'm a firm believer that you can support anyone for any reason. So supporting Inter Miami because of Messi is valid for me.
BUT, if you did want to start going for Houston, you're picking a great time to do it. They struggled for years with identity and relevance. But they are finally turning a corner, and the new front office is making a lot of moves. It's an exciting time to be a Dynamo supporter!

For 2024, MLS should schedule Messi game at NFL/College FB stadiums. Take advantage of the REVENUE from those superfluous, fake fans, while they're here. Fill 60,000-seat stadiums for Messi games; keep STH happy, they all get a seat, but the extra 40,000 is all a bonus.

I 10000% disagree that other teams shouldn't tout Messi. Why? Because, historically, focusing on stars appearing rather than fandom worked better in this country.
Without this tactic in marketing, literally all the American legacy sports wouldn't get off the ground. Baseball did it, Football did it, Basketball did it, Hockey did it, even in Canada. Sometimes they *still* do it. I got an email from the Mets telling me that Shohei Ohtani was going to be in town with the Angels, and I should get tickets.
Hell, back in the old days of the Negro Leagues, teams would effing RENT Satchel Paige for an inning or two to drive ticket sales. It was nuts.
As frustrating as it is, it has a long history of working in this country, and the Big Four *became* the Big Four partly because of it.

    My thoughts:
I picked a great time to check in on your channel again. Awesome rant.
As a Sounders fan dating back to the USL days, I agree, yes, they're absolutely overdoing the Messi thing. It's understandable though, since it's a once in a lifetime thing. The best player in the world doesn't turn down a billion dollars to join your league every day.
I remember telling people when he first joined that he would probably do well, but that MLS is a harder league than many outsiders realize. Many very good players have come here and left empty-handed: Zlatan, Gerrard, Rooney (twice), Schweisteiger, Kaká, the list goes on. Even Beckham needed a couple years to find his footing.
Miami will be in the thick of it next year. They're going to make even more roster moves (Luis Suarez is already rumored), and they'll start the season with their much improved team. We'll see major hype all over the country, and then the Copa América will hit in June, and we'll have Messi, plus other South American stars all over America.
    Brace yourself.

Thing is when David Beckham went to MLS although he was a superb player, he was never the best in the world, he was the most famous, but not the best (there were guys like Zidane, I'd even argue Luis Figo was better) this time with Messi, he's the real deal, he really is one of the GOATs of the game

I like that Messi is in the league, the coverage is way over the top-and you’ve nailed the assessment that they don’t appear to be doing much to convert the Messi viewer into an MLS viewer- but I’m a little peeved that both Apple & Adidas went in so hard to bring him to MLS. I don’t see them working so hard or paying so much money to bring any player to my or any other team. It’s a mockery of the parity this league prides itself on that the biggest sponsors of the league are supplementing a single club’s player salary. Yes Miami are compliant with the salary cap rules, but are they really paying the price for what it takes to have Messi play in MLS? No, they are getting a huge supplement that’s not fair to any other club in the league. It allows them to recruit better and pay their other new additions. He has created a super DP class of player that has a large portion of their salary paid by MLS sponsors, and Miami are the only one I’m aware of that has that roster building competitive advantage.

It's not Messi's League Soccer. If MLS wants to capitalize on this, it's better to promote the whole league and every club in it. It feels more like they're willing to make Miami the entire league marketing wise. But as soon as he retires or just leaves, we'll be right back where we were before Messi. Not only that, but it also seems like every big name player coming into MLS for 2024 wants to play in Miami with Messi, while every other club will just stay as it is when it comes to signing new players. Doing nothing to make it easier for clubs to sign bigger name players while Miami gets to build a super team over night
